In Middle Korean, the accent patterns of words can be described in terms of (a) the
presence/absence of the accent kernel and (b) the location of the kernel in cases where
the kernel is present. By looking at Middle Korean texts, where the tone is marked for
each syllable, one can say that if the word begins with a low tone or a sequence of low
tones followed by a high tone, the last low tone determines the accent pattern for the
word. In other cases, pitch seems to be governed by phrasal pitch features.
The Daegu dialect in Modern Korean has a pitch accent system. In this system, like the
Middle Korean system, the accent patterns can be described in terms of the
presence/absence of the accent kernel and the location of the kernel if it is present.
In this paper, I will show how these accent systems, i.e., the accent systems of Middle
Korean and the Daegu dialect in Modern Korean, correspond to each other.
