Scientific journal, Predicting the export price of shrimp is important for Vietnam’s fisheries. It not only promotes product quality but also helps policy makers determine strategies to develop the national shrimp industry. Competition in global markets is considered to be an important factor, one that significantly influences price. In this study, we predicted trends in the export price of Vietnamese shrimp based on competitive information from six leading exporters (China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Ecuador, and Chile) who, alongside Vietnam, also export shrimp to the US. The prediction was based on a dataset collected from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO) (May-1995 to May-2019) that included price, required farming certificates, and disease outbreak data. A super learner technique, which combined 10 single algorithms, was used to make predictions in selected base periods (3, 6, 9, and 12 months). It was found that the super learner obtained results in all base periods that were more accurate and stable than any candidate algorithms. The impacts of variables in the predictive model were interpreted by a SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis to determine their influence on the price of Vietnamese exports. The price of Indian, Thai, and Chinese exports highlighted the advantages of being a World Trade Organization member and the disadvantages of the prevalence of shrimp disease in Vietnam, which has had a significant impact on the Vietnamese shrimp export price. - Properties of Fish Sound by White-edged Rockfish (<i>Sebastes taczanowskii</i>)

Japanese, We observed the sound production and properties of fox jacopever (Sebastes vulpes) in a water tank experiment to obtain basic information for the Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM). Six pairs of experiments including mature and immature fishes were conducted, and sound properties with and without agonistic behavior were compared. Fox jacopever produced low frequency pulses under 2,000 Hz. Pulse number ranged between 1–77, pulse duration was 0.005–0.220 s, pulse period was 0.001–0.989 s, and peak frequency was 258–490 Hz. These properties were changed by the presence or absence of agonistic behavior. Higher peak frequency over 400 Hz was observed only when a pair included an immature fish. Our results showed the potential use of fish sounds for estimating size and status of territorial behavior in this species by PAM. - Characteristics of Operations at Coastal Fish-landing Sites Managed by Private Owners in the Northern Gulf of Thailand

Japanese, There are many duties done by hand that are associated with the transportation of fish catch in fishing ports in Japan, and there are concerns with an excessive burden on the lumbar. This paper estimated the compression force in the lumbar intervertebral disk based on the weight carried and the work posture for six cases, and assessed the size of the burden by comparing the force with permissible values. The result of this assessment was that four of the cases exceeded the permissible values. - Quantitative mapping of kelp forests (Laminaria spp.) before and after harvest in coastal waters of the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan

English, Scientific journal, To clarify the process that leads to large-angle inclinations or even the capsizing of fishing boats, it is useful to be able to track dynamic changes in ship motions. These motions during fishing operations are not static, they change from moment to moment according to the fishing process, and it is important to understand the characteristics of the motions during each fishing operation process. To this end, in this study we focused on conducting a wavelet analysis to simultaneously estimate the time and frequency characteristics of the motions. We conducted a wavelet analysis of motion data obtained from a 160GT offshore trawler under standard running conditions and during Danish seine trawling. From the result obtained, we were able to accurately estimate motion characteristics as conditions changed during the fishing process. Periodical changes in motion were observed as a result of the resonance between the ship motions and the waves that were encountered. - Decadal variation in egg abundance of a mesopelagic fish, maurolicus japonicus, in the japan sea during 1981-2005

Japanese, It is known that a loading condition of fishing vessel changes frequently with fish catching and fuel oil consumption. This paper describes the study on influence of loading condition on drifting motion of fishing vessel in a regular wave. To investigate the influence, model experiments to measure hydrodynamic forces and wave drift forces acting on a hull in various loading conditions were carried out. Based on the characteristics of the forces, the results of drifting motion test in a regular wave were examined. As the results, it was found that the trim condition of vessel affects drifting motion significantly. Therefore, it is important to consider the trim condition of vessel for the prediction of drifting motion. - Wavelet Analysis for Ship Rolling Motion of Purse Seiners in North Sulawesi, Indonesia

English, A study of coastal fishing boats (small purse seiners) was made in North Sulawesi province, Indonesia. The goal of this study is to clarify the rolling motion under fishing operation of the small purse seiners. First of all we examined the boat form of the purse seiners and practical conditions of rolling motion under fishing operations. Based on the data, the characteristics such boat's stability and rolling motion under fishing operation were calculated. The results of the analysis are as follows: the boat types were relatively slim around the hulls, and the boats had the round shape under water, and a boat still used by fishermen had extremely poor stability, and the roll angle increased remarkably in stage when the boat crossed the wave direction with hauling process, and results of Wavelet analysis showed that the purse seiners used in North Sulawesi had the same characteristics of rolling motion, and wavelet coefficients became large in hauling process. - Design of a new expendable profiler, XMS (Expendable Multiple Sensor)

English, Scientific journal, The size of vesicles and amount of gas they contain is a major factor in the acoustic scattering of Sargassum plants. Here we investigate the morphological character of the vesicles and gas, and their theoretical and experimental target strength (TS) for two Sargassum species, Sargassum macrocarpum and S. siliquastrum. Both species are abundant in the coastal waters of Japan. A total of 593 vesicles were measured using a soft X-ray system, and their gas shapes were applied to two theoretical TS models (non-resonance and resonance). Experimental TS were obtained at 70 and 200 kHz using quantitative echo sounders in a freshwater tank. Gas fields were found in 418 vesicles, and the gas radius and external size of the vesicles were linearly related in both species. The theoretical TS of the non-resonance model was similar to the experimental TS of large vesicles (≥4.1 mm at 70 kHz, ≥2.8 mm at 200 kHz), whereas the theoretical TS of the resonance model was similar to the experimental TS of small vesicles (≤3.1 mm at 70 kHz, ≤1.9 mm at 200 kHz). Finally, we estimated TS-size equations according to the gas-size relationships and compared the results. - Acoustic biomass estimate of California headlightfish Diaphus theta, off eastern Hokkaido, Japan

Japanese, Scientific journal, At present, the distribution of endangered Sakhalin taimen, Hucho perryi, in Japan is limited to several rivers and lakes in Hokkaido. Although field studies of adult H. perryi have focused on spawning habits, other ecological information is lacking. Here, we report on field research conducted to elucidate the seasonal migration patterns of adult H. perryi in the Bekanbe-ushi River system in Hokkaido using acoustic telemetry. From early May to late November 2007, we tracked five taimen with acoustic tags using 13 acoustic receivers. We detected the tagged fish a combined total of 37,683 times. The fish migrated an average of 33.4±12.5 (SD) km downstream from their spawning area over 1-4 days. They primarily resided mid-downstream in the spring, upper-downstream in the summer, and downstream in the autumn. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the upward migration by tagged fish living downstream was affected by ambient daily maximum water temperatures in the summer, whereas spring and autumn downward migrations were facilitated by ambient daily minimum water temperatures in mid-stream areas. These results suggest that the seasonal migration patterns of adult H. perryi are closely associated with the water temperature regimes of this river system. - Measurements of density contrast and sound-speed contrast for target strength estimation of Neocalanus copepods (Neocalanus cristatus and Neocalanus plumchrus) in the North Pacific Ocean

Aquaculture is a method of producing fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae and other organisms in a sustainable manner. As the global population continues to grow, so too has demand and, as a result, many marine species have become severely depleted. Aquaculture is a means of sustainably addressing this demand, replenishing wild stocks and rebuilding populations of endangered species. Assistant Professor Yuki Takahashi, from the Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences at Hokkaido University in Japan, is working as part of a collaborative team of researchers from across academia and industry in Japan to adress this issue of sustainability of demand, by developing an aquaculture tank designed to improve the survival rate in the early larval stage., Science Impact, Ltd., English, Introduction other - 受動的音響観察によるエゾメバルの生息密度とサイズ組成の推定

佐伯 公康; 木村 暢夫; 藤森 康澄; 安間 洋樹, Memoirs of the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University, 55, 1, 107, 132, Dec. 2013
In many commercial operations of set net fishery and trawl in Japan, fish catch unloaded from boats are promptly sorted anddisplayed for an auction at a fishing port. This work is achieved with machines and by hand. There have been existed manuallabor and dangerous operations. However, the system of work is so empirical and complicated because of variety of species offish catch and its day-by-day fluctuation. This remarkable feature prevents worksite from improvement. In this study, based onexisting work analysis technique, systematic technique of work process description for improvement of caught fish handling isnewly proposed. Practicality of this technique is proved through the application to two worksites in Japan. Process chart anddescription derived from this technique would contribute to improvement of occupational health and safety at fishing ports., Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University, Japanese - 若狭湾における数種の藻場の音響反射特性

本多健太郎; 野田裕二; 津田裕一; 安間洋樹; 宮下和士, 日本生態学会誌, 59, 3, 239, 247, 30 Nov. 2009
At present, the distribution of endangered Sakhalin taimen, Hucho perryi, in Japan is limited to several rivers and lakes in Hokkaido. These results suggest that the seasonal migration patterns of adult H. perryi are closely associated with the water temperature regimes of this river system., The Ecological Society of Japan, Japanese - ICES水産音響シンポジウム・SEAFACTS 2008に参加して(水産研究のフロントから)

In this study, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to evaluate and improve the flow field of aquaculture tanks targeting the early juvenile stage. for improving survival rates.First, flow visualization experiment using PIV was conducted on a circular tank to verify the estimation accuracy of CFD analysis. The results confirmed the validity of the CFD simulations.
Then, CFD analysis was conducted for octagonal and circular tanks with various changes in the placement of airstones, and the flow field was evaluated and airstone placement was proposed by using the range of upwelling to prevent sinking death. For the future's task, rearing experiment using proposed tank should be conducted to confirm the effects of the improvements.
