AbstractThis study investigated co-hydrothermal carbonisation (co-HTC) of dairy manure (DM) and wood shavings from Larix kaempferi, commonly known as the Japanese larch (JL) to enhance the fuel properties of the resulting hydrochar. The JL was mixed with the DM at 25, 50 and 75 wt.% ratios. Co-HTC was conducted at 260 °C for 20 min. The resulting hydrochars were characterised based on the physicochemical properties and the thermal behaviour. Results showed that the hydrochar solid biofuel properties improved as the ratio of JL was increased. The produced hydrochars were in the region of lignite and closed to the region of the coal with increased fixed carbon, carbon contents and lowered H/C and O/C ratios. Hydrochar with ash content of 7.2 ± 0.5% was obtained at 75 wt.% JL. In addition, the HHV of hydrochar increased remarkably to 26.4 ± 0.02 MJ/kg as the mass ratio of the JL was increased. The surface morphology of the hydrochars were altered and became distinct while the specific surface area (SSA) and the total pore volume (TPV) of the hydrochars increased at increasing the mass ratio of the JL. The surface functional groups were also altered by the co-HTC process. A decline in the combustion performance was observed after the HTC process but improved at 75 wt.% JL after the co-HTC process. The kinetic analysis also revealed that the activation energy decreased after the HTC process but increased to a higher value at 50 wt.% JL after the co-HTC process. Therefore, hydrochar production by co-HTC of DM and JL has proved to be an effective and promising solid biofuel source. Graphical abstract

© 2018 Asian Agricultural and Biological Engineering Association In this study, we report the long term operation results of analyses of characteristics of the Rakuno Gakuen University Biogas generation plant (BGP), which has been in operation since March 2000. We evaluated using data for the 11-year period between April 2000 (FY2000), when BGP was built, and March 2011 (FY2010). The average biogas production per unit showed substantial fluctuations during this period, increasing from 20 m 3 during the trial operation period in FY2000 to 30–40 m 3 in FY2001–FY2006, and then decreasing to 15–25 m 3 in FY2007–FY2010. The optimal methane fermentation facility temperature for steady methane gas production was approximately 40 °C. In FY2007, this BGP experienced its first localized functionality decline in energy use, including methane fermentation and power generation facilities. This resulted from changes in the substrate characteristics, inputs, and methane fermentation facility temperature, indicating that operations need to accommodate such changes in the long term.

Animal manure is a source of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), therefore understanding the mechanisms underlying its production is essential for developing mitigating strategies and sustainable livestock production system. In this study, microbial communities potentially involved in multiple emission peaks during initial stage of laboratory-scale dairy manure composting with forced aeration system were investigated. Mature compost was used for the bulking agent. Change of overall bacterial community and nitrification-denitrification gene abundance were monitored by using 16S rRNA gene amoA, nirS, nirK or nosZ genes, respectively. Three N2O emission peaks were observed when the temperature reached at 45, 60 and 72 °C, at the same timing of oxygen consumption peaks. The maximum N2O emission peak was 3.86 mg h−1 kg−1 TS when the temperature reached at 60 °C. The shift of bacterial community among these experimental periods was significant, orders Flavobacteriales, Burkholderiales and Xanthomonadales increased, while orders belong to Bacillales, Lactobacillales, Clostridiales and Bacteroidales decreased. In addition, abundance of two denitrification genes (nirS and nosZ) significantly increased during this period. Clone library analysis of these genes showed that significantly increased sequences belonged to Pseudomonas-like clusters for both genes, indicates that denitrifiers possesses these genes are involved for these N2O emission peaks caused by mature compost addition.

The aim of this study was to determine the appropriate strategy for cattle manure composting with forced aeration. The composting of cattle manure was conducted using an 18.8 L reactor with three different amounts of total air supplied (1080, 3240 and 10,800 L/kg dry mass) during 360 h of composting using continuous and on/off sequencing (20 min/h) aeration methods and three turning patterns (no turning, full turning and turning with position change). The degradation of organic matter in three-stage systems (the compost was turned every 120 h over the 360 h period) was significantly affected by total air supply volume and was large in the case of on/off sequence aeration. The pattern of moisture change was more affected by turning than by aeration modes. The optimal composting conditions for organic matter degradation (maximum of 37.7%) were aeration rate: 0.45 L/min kg dm, aeration mode: on/off sequencing process and full turning. The total accumulated weight losses and heat generated during composting indicated significant effects of the total air supplied and were large in the case of the continuous process.

In order to consider the potential for electricity supply from a biogas power generation system (BGP) located adjacent to a livestock barn, the power balance was determined by using both simulation and actual measurement. Examination of power balances at the barn and the BGP showed that a certain amount of electricity for supply could be secured based on load leveling in both tie-stall barns and free-stall barns. BGPs are a viable renewable energy (RE) power source that can produce enough electricity for system operation and maintenance as well as a significant surplus of supply for power companies and other users. BGPs have the potential to allow output control appropriate for the relevant amount of gas storage. Further, output control based on the use of a gas holder in combination with changes in the number of biogas generators could allow more efficient usage of biogas. Specifically, the range of power output adjustment can be widened through parallel operation of several biogas generators, instead of a single generator. In other words, one biogas generator uses a constant power supply, and the other uses it to control the output for the related amount of gas storage. In this way, the possibility of achieving a constant electricity output through biogas power generation system and a regulated power supply was demonstrated.

In this study, power demand leveling technologies were evaluated through the adjustment of electrical equipment operating times based on the results of a measurement survey on livestock feeding management system electricity usage. The results showed peak power demand at two specific times. One was during milking time, when a pipeline milker, a bulk cooler and other milking equipment were used. In the other case, power demand peaked early in the morning and at night, when electric water heaters were in operation, due to the large number of milking cows and the time-consuming milking method used. In either case, it was found that ventilation fans and other incidental facilities used over extended periods were major consumers and accounted for the base of power demand, and that power consumption would definitely be reduced by peak power demand leveling through adjustment of operational methods for this equipment. It was found that operational control involving the introduction of inverters and the operation of ventilation fans only in parlors and holding areas during milking reduced daily power consumption by utmost 40% on farms with milking parlors and by approximately 30% on farms without. The use of an ice builder to pre-cool raw milk on large-scale farms could reduce daily power consumption by approximately 13%. When combined with the reduced power consumption from operational control of ventilation fans, power consumption could be reduced by over 50%.

Biofiltration technology based on microbial degradation and assimilation is used for the removal of malodorous compounds, such as ammonia. Microbes that degrade malodorous and/or organic substances are involved in composting and are retained after composting; therefore, mature composts can serve as an ideal candidate for a biofilter medium. In this study, we focused on different types of raw compost materials, as these are important factors determining the bacterial community profile and the chemical component of the compost. Therefore, bacterial community profiles, the abundance of the bacterial ammonia monooxygenase gene (amoA), and the quantities of chemical components were analyzed in composts produced from either food waste or cattle manure. The community profiles with the lowest beta diversity were obtained from single type of cattle manure compost. However, cattle manure composts showed greater alpha diversity, contained higher amounts of various rRNA gene fragments than those of food waste composts and contained the amoA gene by relative quantification, and Proteobacteria were abundantly found and nitrifying bacteria were detected in it. Nitrifying bacteria are responsible for ammonia oxidation and mainly belong to the Proteobacteria or Nitrospira phyla. The quantities of chemical components, such as salt, phosphorus, and nitrogen, differed between the cattle manure and food waste composts, indicating that the raw materials provided different fermentation environments that were crucial for the formation of different community profiles. The results also suggest that cattle manure might be a more suitable raw material for the production of composts to be used in the biofiltration of ammonia. The aim of this research was to evaluate the use of manufacturing wallboard paper scraps as an alternative bulking agent for dairy cattle manure composting. The characteristics of the composting process were studied based on the changes in physico-chemical parameters and compost quality. Composting of dairy cattle manure with wallboard paper was performed in a 481-L cylindrical reactor with vacuum-type aeration. Rapid degradation of organic matter was observed during the thermophilic stage of composting due to high microbial activity. High temperature and alkaline pH conditions promoted intense ammonia emission during the early stage of composting. The number of mesophilic and thermophilic microorganisms were found to be affected by changes in temperature at different composting stages. The total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sodium (Na) concentrations of the mixture did not change significantly after 28 days of composting. However, the presence of gypsum in the paper scraps increased the calcium content of the final compost. The wallboard paper had no phyto-inhibitory effects as shown by high germination index of final compost (GI = 99%). (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A thermophilic-mesophilic sequence of composting was compared with continuous thermophilic composting in a small-scale laboratory reactor. Dairy cattle manure was allowed to self-heat adiabatically for one week prior to individual temperature treatments at 20, 37, and 55 degrees C. Preliminary self-heating was carried out to naturally activated indigenous compost microorganisms to attain thermophilic condition. Microbial activity during composting was monitored by measuring oxygen uptake rate (OUR). Total active microbial biomass was measured using the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence technique. Organic matter degradation was determined by measuring the volatile solids content of compost samples. Results showed that composting at 55 degrees C promotes the rapid degradation of organic matter as shown by high cumulative oxygen uptake. Composting at 37 degrees C also exhibited high microbial activity probably due to degradation of complex organic compounds. Microbial biomass was found to be high at 20 and 37 degrees C, indicating larger microbial communities at lower compost temperatures. Organic matter degradation analysis revealed no large differences in the final solid degradation rate at 55 and 37 degrees C. The study suggests the importance of a thermophilic-mesophilic sequence in composting to maximise the extent of organic matter degradation. (C) 2007 IAgrE. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Investigations were carried out to find out the relationship between temperature and microbial activity in dairy cattle manure composting using oxygen uptake rate, specific growth rate and enzymatic activities during autothermal and isothermal composting experiments. In autothermal composting, oxygen uptake rate and specific growth rate were found to be most intensive in order of 43 degrees C, 60 degrees C and 54 degrees C. Isothermal composting at 54 degrees C resulted highest levels of enzymatic activity and promoted the volatile solids reduction. Based on the maximum enzymatic activity, specific growth rate appeared to be more closely linked with microbial activity in compost than with oxygen uptake rate. The enhancement of specific growth rate, enzymatic activity and volatile solids reduction were induced at 54 degrees C in cattle manure composting. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

To clarify the characteristics of thermophilic bacteria in cattle manure compost, enzymatic activity and species diversity of cultivated bacteria were investigated at 54, 60, 63, 66 and 70 degrees C, which were dependent on composting temperature. The highest level of thermophilic bacterial activity was observed at 54 degrees C. Following an increase in temperature to 63 degrees C, a reduction in bacterial diversity was observed. At 66 degrees C, bacterial diversity increased again, and diverse bacteria including Thermus spp. and thermophilic Bacillus spp. appeared to adapt to the higher temperature. At 70 degrees C, bacterial activity measured as superoxide dismutase and catalase activity was significantly higher than at 66 degrees C. However, the decomposition rate of protein in the compost was lower than the rate at 66 degrees C due to the higher compost temperature. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the thermal properties (effective thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity) of an organic waste used to model the composting process in relation to volumetric water content at 20 degrees C. The organic waste was a mixture of fresh dairy cattle feces and sawdust with a ratio of one-to-one on a dry weight basis. The thermal probe method was used to determine the effective thermal diffusivity. The effective thermal conductivities were found to increase with volumetric water content, and ranged from 0.0500 to 0.202 W m(-1) K-1 at volumetric water contents of 0% and 44.2%, respectively. The thermal diffusivity was not affected by the volumetric water content, and was found to have a mean value of 1.08 x 10(-7) m(2) s(-1). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Not only in individual plants but in different plants with 10 leaves, the angles between pairs of mature leaves that developed sequentially on the main shoot with left-handed phyllotaxis ranged widely, from a maximum of 154.7 degrees between the first leaf and the second leaf and a minimum of 119.3 degrees between the second and the third leaf. The angle between the each pair of neighboring leaves from the third and the tenth leaf was intermediate, ranging between 120.3 to 141.3 degrees. The mean angle of divergence on one plant was calculated to be 135.3 degrees. The same pattern was observed also in plants with right-handed phyllotaxis that developed 10 or 11 leaves on the main shoot. The angle of divergence between the terminal leaf and the first inflorescence was almost identical as that of pairs of leaves on the main shoot. The arrangement of nodes 7 to 12 of leaf primordia on the main shoot was similar. These results indicate that the phyllotaxis of tomato plants was 3/8, with an angle of divergence of 135 degrees, as calculated by the orthostichy system. Because the accuracy of measurement was within +/- 2.5 degrees, our results would also be compatible with phyllotaxis of 5/13 (about 138.4 degrees), 8/21 (about 137.1 degrees), 13/34 (about 137.6 degrees), or the limiting value of the main series in Schimper-Braun's law, (3-square-root 5)/2, (about 137.5 degrees).

This paper describes acceleration of degradation rate for high-moisture dairy manure with no bulking agent. High-moisture dairy manure has much dissolved oxygen, then first we have investigated dissolved oxygen content of dairy manure liquid. It was determined the relationship between dissolved oxygen and compost bacteria growth rate constant with nano-heat calorimeter. The Growth rate constant of compost bacteria increased with the increase of moisture content. And heat production rate of composting using high-moisture material was higher than that of composting using optimal-moisture material in the early stage reaction of composting. It means that the dissolved oxygen with high-moisture material induce the early stage, of composting reaction to accelerate degradation rate. This shows a possibility of innovative composting system for high-moisture biological wastes without any bulking agent.
