The present study aimed to evaluate the psychological and physical effects of hill walking on corporate employees as well as to identify its beneficial aspects. Thirty company employees and 31 local citizens participated in a guided hill walk held in Kaminoyama City in Japan. Participants completed questionnaires immediately before, immediately after, and the day after the walk. The questionnaires consisted of a 12-item mood scale (MCL-S.2) and questions assessing physical conditions and motivation for participation. Among both corporate employees and local citizens, positive mood factors including vigorous mood and relaxed mood showed significant improvement after the walk (p<0.001). This result indicated that hill walks could substantially enhance psychological state within both groups. Even on the following day, these two factors remained significantly higher than before the walk among local citizens (p<0.05 and p<0.01, respectively). However, among corporate employees, only vigorous mood remained significantly improved on the day following the walk ( p<0.05 ) . Specifically, employeesʼ enhancement of relaxed mood immediately after the walk did not persist to the following day. As for self-perceived physical condition, among both corporate employees and local citizens, items of ʻI am in good shapeʼ and ʻI have stiff shoulders or a stiff neckʼ showed significant improvement on the following day (p<0.05). Furthermore, corporate employees experienced significant enhancement of feeling physically refreshed on the day following the walk (p<0.05). Our findings demonstrate that hill walking is beneficial for the mental and physical health of corporate employees and local citizens. However, as the sustained impact of employeesʼ feeling relaxed was limited, factors that affect the maintenance of this impact require clarification. The results also indicate that further investigation of factors that motivate people to walk for exercise purposes is necessary in order to help employees successfully maintain this behaviour.

Journal of The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 70, 5, 723, 726, The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 30 Mar. 2007
Japanese, Japan has introduced and applied many advanced forestry systems from Germany ever since the nineteenth century, and the predominant trend in recent Japanese forestry policy may also be characterized as a shift towards post-productivism. However, as yet it remains doubtful that local forest communities in Japan have reached consensus. What are the main differences with regard to conflict management in forestry? Case studies in Sawauchi and the Reinhardswald were conducted to compare the local residents' own perspectives about their region and forest. In the Reinhardswald, the forest is generally connected with their quality of life and appreciated through practical recreational use. On the other hand in Sawauchi, the forest is still a part of their living space and perceived variously depending on each use. The research findings indicate that the public has instilled an identical forest image in Germany whereas in Japan there are heterogeneous forest images.

Journal of The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 69, 5, 691, 694, The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 27 Mar. 2006
Japanese, This study aimed to compare forest image molded by individual experience and culture. Students in Japan and Germany answered questionnaire and made drawings of their forest image, and the elements composing the forest image differed. Japanese students tended to draw a motive of their own impressive experiences, while German students described the forest more objectively. The drawings were categorized in three types, namely Object, Natural landscape, and Cultural landscape according to the representation of civilization and the relationship to the individuals. The majority of the drawings of the German students were categorized in Object. They often have stable rich experience in visiting forests. The drawings of the Japanese students differed depending on their experience during childhood and rare actual visits.

Japanese, This study aims to classify experience of the past, conceptualized image, and perception in new environment through photography, drawing, and text description. Consequently, it became clear that the group surrounded by urban nature has perceived few objects individually, the group familiar with forests in childhood term perceives many objects, which creates the object field, and the group experienced mountain climbing recently perceives them also as the viewpoint field connected to themselves.

This study aims to revitalize regional areas, i.e., depopulated towns and villages, by sharing the inhabitants’ time and space of depopulated areas with the inhabitants of the neighboring metropolitan area. This model is known as ‘Time Space Sharing (TSS)’. The inhabitants of Sobetsu-cho and Sapporo-city participated in the experiments to investigate the influences of the TSS model on regional revitalization. A questionnaire as well as a practical experiment were used to clarify the effects of the TSS model to the inhabitants of the depopulated area (Sobetsu-cho), by sharing their time and space with the inhabitants of the big city (Sapporo-city). Furthermore, to confirm the validity of the TSS model, additional experiments were conducted in other depopulated areas such as Suttsu-cho. The results showed that (1) the validity of TSS model, (2) the effective factors to regional revitalization, (3) the role of stakeholders.

With special attention to the cultural services urban green space bring out, we attempted to clarify the use of green spaces and its transition in Japan, China and Indonesia, from the viewpoint of nature experience.
In contrast to Japan where many cities studied were more mature, in Xining, Qinghai Province, which is experiencing a rapid urbanization, we were able to observe transitions in nature experience for individual ethnic groups. We also studied parks, green pedestrian paths and waterways in Sapporo City, Nerima-ku, Edogawa-ku, Saitama Prefecture and Yokohama City in Japan. In Indonesia, we conducted a research on the awareness of scenery, traditional squares and green spaces. From the outcomes of the research, we have gained new insight into open space planning methods for improving the attractiveness of urban areas more effectively as well as assuring urban greenery in terms of quantity.

  • A study on woodland burials as a new forest use in Japan and Germany
Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B)
    2010 - 2012

This study clarified the factors of spreading wood burials in Germany comparing with Japanese challenges of them. German wood burial is placed as a new forest use in addition to the multiple public functions of forest. In contrast, Japanese wood burial is a new form of graveyard. In addition to that, German wood burials are managed by private enterprises which contract with forest owners and controlled by foresters in a sustainable nature based forest management. Japanese wood burials have already diversified and some forest type wood burials are managed by Buddhist monk, which face similar challenges in sustainable forest management.
