    The impact of income disparity on vulnerability and information collection during the 2011 Thai Flood was examined through a survey investigation. Lower-income respondents were found to have been more likely to be inundated by the flood than higher-income respondents because of the location of their residences, and lower-income respondents whose residences flooded were also less likely to have evacuated. Television was widely used, regardless of income level, but lower-income respondents tended to also utilise lowertechnology modes, such as radios and loudspeakers, in contrast to the Internetbased modes used by higher-income respondents. Lower-income respondents also tended to be less aware of the government hotline; however, those that were aware of it were more likely to find it useful. Overall, while income was a good predictor of people's flood vulnerability, it was not the best predictor for media usage; other demographic characteristics, such as education level and age, should also be considered.

    Microstructure recovery plays an important role in restoring the performance of concrete damaged by fire. This research applied X-ray CT and image analysis techniques to non-destructively examine the internal microstructure of high-strength concrete in order to clarify the effects of heating and re-curing on microstructure characteristics. Heating caused an increase in total pore space due to an increase in connectivity caused by the formation of cracks in the mortar-aggregate interface and bridging cracks. Water re-curing, however, was effective in recovering microstructure through the reduction in connected pore space, with most recovery occurring within 7 days. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.     Asia is home to a diversity of socio-economic and environmental conditions which directly affect concrete-related manufacturing and construction. The implementation of sustainable concrete in Asian countries is thus highly dependent on their regional conditions, but the regional context of sustainable concrete needs to be understood in order to connect generalized strategies with actual implementation. This paper summarizes the results and key findings from previous qualitative investigations carried out in Japan, Thailand, S. Korea, Mongolia, and Singapore, and compares the approaches and barriers to sustainable concrete in order to extract regional issues and their relationship with sustainable concrete. The results highlight the importance of institutional systems, economic factors, resource availability and recycling, geography and climate, technology level, stakeholder roles and relations, and social factors when considering the implementation of strategies for sustainable concrete in Asia.     In order to improve the sustainability of the Asian concrete industry, it is important to understand the effect of regional context considering the widely varying socio-economic conditions present in Asia. This research in Mongolia and Singapore was conducted as a continuation of previous studies in Japan, Thailand and South Korea in order to further contribute to understanding regional context, particularly geographic, climate, and economic factors. Geography and climate were found to strongly affect the means by which durability should be assured in each country, as Singapore has a tropical climate whereas Mongolia experiences a large temperature variation with extremely cold winters. The ability to access construction materials and resources was also related to geography, as Singapore, while resource poor, is an international shipping center, whereas Mongolia has abundant resources but few access routes for imports. Quality control issues in Mongolia could be understood in the context of the lower level of economic development, whereas in Singapore the high level of development has lead to an emphasis on green construction, with the government taking the lead in implementing new systems and technologies.
