    本研究では、森林およびササを伐採した演習林から流出する硝酸イオンの三酸素同位体組成の時間変化を分析することで、流出水中の硝酸イオンの起源を明らかにして、森林の大気から沈着する窒素除去能力に対して伐採が与える影響を定量化した。その結果、特にササ伐採後は沈着窒素の流出フラックスが伐採前の約20倍に増加しており、大気から沈着する窒素の除去能力がほぼ完全に失われたことが明らかになった

    To understand the behavior of metals in forest area, we collected atmospheric aerosol, fallout and river water samples in every two weeks from June of 2002 to December of 2004 in the Teshio Experimental Forest (45°03'N, 142°07'E a. s. 1.66m). And all samples were analyzed by ICP-MS for metals, such as Fe, Al, Ti, Ba, Sr, Mn, Zn, Pb.<BR>Atmospheric concentrations of Fe, A1, Pb, Mn and Sr in both aerosols and fallouts increased in winter. However, the atmospheric Zn and Ba in aerosols increased during winter, but in the fallouts.<BR>In the event of rainfall, Ba, Sr and Mn concentrations in river water, those were mainly plant origin, were decreasing with increasing in the flow. On the contrary, Al and Ti. concentrations in the water, those were mainly soil origin, were increasing in the same period. As for Fe, also soil origin was decreasing in the period. In thaw season, Fe, Ba and Sr concentrations decreased with increasing in flow, however, Al and Zn concentrations increased. In comparison the annual output from the river water with the annual input from the fallouts. As for Al, Fe, Sr and Ba, the output exceeded the input. As for Zn and Pb, the input exceeded the output. As for Mn and Ti, the input and the output were nearly equal.

    Elemental budgets of forest watershed during snow melting periods from end of March to end of June were determined in a cold snowy region in northern Hokkaido.

    The total stream water discharge was 712 mm with a discharge ratio (discharge/precipitation) of 0.78. During the early stage of snow melting Na+, Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+ and SO42- concentrations in stream water increase remarkably, most likely due to the elements accumulated within the snowpack and surface soil, and decrease with the decrease of stream discharge. On the contrary, bicarbonate concentration decreases, at the beginning of snow melting, due to the dilution effect of the melting water, and gradually increases with the decrease of stream discharge. A Cl/Na ratio, similar to that of seawater suggests a marine origin of Na and Cl. The results from the analysis of element budgets, during the whole snow-melting season, show that: i) inputs of Na+ and Cl- are similar and mostly released from the watershed; ii) inputs of Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO3- are dramatically smaller than their outputs, indicating that these ions are discharged from the watershed and that the dissociation of the bicarbonate is the major proton source during the melting period. The reaction of mineral weathering and/or ionic exchange of Ca2+ and Mg2+ are major proton sinks with a net leaching of 16 molc ha-1 d-1, as acidification rate of the forest watershed. These findings clearly indicate that the elemental dynamic of forest watershed in cold snowy regions is quite different between the early and late stage of the snow melting process. Moreover, the net fluxes of elemental outputs are closely related to the bicarbonate dynamics within the forest watershed.

    北海道北部の近接する第三紀層と蛇紋岩の山地源流域において1997年と1999年に融雪流出の観測を行なった。その結果、蛇紋岩流域は流量変動が大きい特徴を有すること、それに対して第三紀層流域は流量変動が小さいことがわかった。蛇紋岩流域の極大流量は第三紀層のそれの約2倍だった。1日もしくは2日単位の水収支解析を行なったところ両流域とも流出率は100%以上だった。経験的な手法で直接流出を分離し、その流出率を調べたところ、第三紀層流域は30%未満、蛇紋岩流域では40%以上で60%を超える場合もあった。河川水温の平均値は第三紀層流域が約5℃、蛇紋岩流域が約2℃で3℃ほどの差があった。これらの値は、第三紀層流域では100cmよりも相当深い深度、蛇紋岩流域では50cm深の地温に等しい。このことから、第三紀層流域では土壌の深部に、蛇紋岩流域では浅層部に流出経路があると推測した。

    Extensive research on forest stream water chemistry gives important information in understanding the effects of environmental changes in forest ecosystems. The chemical properties of stream water from 45 forested watersheds in university forests over Japan were investigated in June, 1998. The average pH was 7.1 (maximum 8.1,minimum 6.1). The average electric conductivity (EC) was 64 (maximum 178,minimum 19) μS/cm. The EC of stream water in Okinawa and Sado Island sites tended to be high because the effects of sea salt. Except for the island sites, EC had a positive correlation with pH, summation of cation and alkalinity (mostly HCO_3^-). This suggests that the water showed a high EC value and a high pH value caused by the consumption of proton (H^+) in streams where carbonate weathering brings a high cation concentration. The NO_3^- concentration in the Kanto mountainous region sites was high compared with the concentration of other sites. In Gunma sites, the relationships between NO_3^- and Ca^<2+> concentration had a close positive correlation. It was considered that exchangeable Ca^<2+> in the surface soil was discharged due to the increase of H^+ produced by nitrification.

    Runoff characteristics of meltwater from a perennial snowpatch in the Daisetsu mountains of central Hokkaido were observed during the summer snowmelt season in 1990. Lag-time of the peak streamflow to the peak surface snowmelt was about 7 hours, and its occurrence time did not change remarkably when the snow depth decreased from 7m to 2m. The apparent speed of infiltration in the snowpatch was 58cm/h, which was estimated from the aquifer level change. The lag-time of 50% runoff was small and the streamwater temperature was about 0℃ during the active snowmelt in a day. These characteristics were considerably different from those in a forested basin. The difference could be attributed mainly to the shallow pathways of meltwater in the thinner soil mantle in the alpine basin.

    The diurnal variations of stream water level and electric conductivity were oberved at the Moshiri experimental basin (1.28km2) during the snowmelt period of 1993. Observations were made at 4 sites, namely at middle- and down-stream locations in a main stream and in two tributaries. The phase lags of electric conductivity in the tributaries occurred 4 hours or more later than those at the main stream. Such a phase lag was not observed in the variations of stream water level.

    The temperatures of streams under thick snow cover in the volcanic basin of Neogene period in northern Hokkaido Island, Japan, were found to rise to 3° or 4°C during the snowmelt runoff. Because these were considerably higher than the temperature of snowmelt (0°C), and the streams were perfectly insulated from heat sources from above by snow cover, it was reasoned that soil heat was furnishing most of the heat in runoff. The stream temperatures during the rainstorm runoff in August and September decreased gradually after peak runoff, attaining a nearly constant temperature 9∼11°C on the contrary to that during snowmelt runoff. These stream temperatures attained in the falling limb of each stormflow are comparable to those of soil at about 1.8m below land surface in each period in this basin. The hydrographs in each stormflow were separated assuming the stream tempratures depending on the mixing of direct discharge of meltwater or rain with indirect discharge of subsurface water having 1.8 m soil temperatures. The separated subsurface flow occupied 80∼90% of the total flow in each flood. The hydrograhs were also separated by electric conductance following the stream temperature method.

    Regional observations of snow cover were carried out in Hokkaido from 18th to 27th February 1992, and a "snow cover diagram" was made. The water equivalent of snow was found to be proportional to the Ram hardness of snow. Chemical analyses of snow samples showed variations in Cl- concentrations with distances from the sea shore, and differences in the anion composition between mountaintops and flatlands. The pH value of snow samples collected near a trunk road was found to be closely related to Ca2+ concentrations due to contamination from asphalt dust.

    Spatial variabilities of summer precipitation were observed at the Moshiri experimental basin (1.3km2) in Hokkaido. Daily amounts of rainfall measured at six sites in the basin were found to be nearly equal, and showed no tendency to vary with topography and elevation. Hourly hyetographs showed very similar patterns, except for periods of heavy and short durational showers.
