This study compares the process of inter-agency collaboration among multi-disciplinary agencies within Japan as they work to provide well-coordinated care for the elderly through a Community Care Access Center (CCAC). Using the KJ method, also known as an "affinity diagram", in two group meetings (before and after CCAC establishment) with practitioners and administrators from 6 agencies in the city of Kakegawa, Japan. 521 comments by agencies were coded into 37 categories. In comparing the comments from the two meetings, the portion of negative comments regarding organization management decreased, while comments on the shared problems of the CCAC increased. A multiple correspondence analysis indicated that the 6 agencies shared a greater awareness of issues after the establishment of the CCAC, but the problems pointed out by the visiting nurses agency differed from those of the other agencies.

As societies age, it is anticipated that we will see a sudden increase in the number of frail elderly persons. New assisted-technology (AT) devices to facilitate the activities of daily life (ADL), especially of walking, are essential for the healthy life of these people. However, frail elderly people suffer a variety of physical and mental weaknesses that tend to hinder their ability to make use of AT devices in the intended manner. Because of this, it is important that new AT devices undergo technology evaluation within the context in which they are to be used, but there is very little research in this area. In this study, frail elderly people in Japanese daycare centers and rehabilitation facilities were given a 4-wheel, power-assisted bicycle, called a "Life Walker" (LW), to ride, and technology evaluations were carried out based on functionality, usability, and experience as perceived by the frail elderly riders. The LW is considered to be best suited for those age 75 and older assessed at level 1 to 3 under Japan's long-term care insurance program, but the data for the 61 people at the rehabilitation facility who tried out the bicycle under the supervision of a resident physical therapist (PT), indicated that there was considerable individual deviation on the continued use of the AT device. The LW is also meant to enable frail elderly users who have difficulty walking to go outside and enjoy themselves more. It was found, however, that this effect was achieved only when the physical therapist intervened, gave encouragement, adjusted the bicycle settings as needed for the user, and otherwise created new knowledge. It was also found that in order for this kind of knowledge creation to take place, the bicycle must be used in an appropriate setting, the user needs to have a proactive attitude, and organizational support to ensure that therapists are appropriately assigned is necessary.

There are various definitions and survey methods for scientific literacy. Taking into consideration the contemporary significance of scientific literacy, we have defined it with an emphasis on its social aspects. To acquire the insights needed to design a form of science communication that will enhance the scientific literacy of each individual, we conducted a large-scale random survey within Japan of individuals older than 18 years, using a printed questionnaire. The data thus acquired were analyzed using factor analysis and cluster analysis to create a 3-factor/4-cluster model of people's interest and attitude toward science, technology and society and their resulting tendencies. Differences were found among the four clusters in terms of the three factors: scientific factor, social factor, and science-appreciating factor. We propose a plan for designing a form of science communication that is appropriate to this current status of scientific literacy in Japan.

Most universities in Japan conduct course evaluation as part of the faculty development program, and many methods to improve course content have been proposed. However, few studies discuss the improvement of omnibus courses. In this paper, we suggest a new method to improve omnibus courses, especially their consistency and relevance. We designed an omnibus course named "Clean Energy Business and Social Acceptance," which consisted of six serial lectures, each conducted by a different lecturer. Prior to the running of the course, we interviewed the lecturers and formulated a conceptual netwo...

Although previous studies have addressed the reliability of residential PV systems in order to improve the dissemination of the systems among individual users and societies, few have examined users' perception of their own PV systems, which might contain solutions to firmly establish the system into society. First, the present paper examined the extent to which residential PV system users understand specification, reliability, and failure risk of their own systems. Second, causal factors affecting users' satisfaction with PV systems were examined. By analyzing data collected in Kakegawa City, this paper revealed that users did not appropriately understand the basic specifications of their residential PV systems, and in particular, the fact that the systems sometimes failed and therefore needed proper maintenance. Furthermore, a strong causal relationship between users' expectations of financial return from the system and their level of satisfaction was confirmed empirically. These results suggested that excessive focus on profitability and relatively low interest in the systems' reliability and failure risk should be addressed more to avoid problems that could potentially hamper the establishment of this technology into society. In today’ s engineering education, it is indispensable to develop an education program for improving communication capability. And it is important to have meaningful evaluation systems to measure the effectiveness of such a program. Nonetheless, an objective method of evaluation has not yet to be established. In this paper, I reviewed previous cases about the definition of communication and the education methods, so as to clarify the issue. I then move on to describe our struggle to develop an evaluation system which makes use of conceptual networks, rubrics, and evaluations of the scientific literacy of participants. Although these methods are integral to the definition of communication capability and educational methods, it is necessary to improve the objectivity and the feasibility.

Engineering students are increasingly expected to perform as “global engineers” to lead the society as opinion leaders in finding proper directions for science and engineering developments. The Tokyo Institute of Technology is offering “the knowledge, thinking ability, and skills as the basis for its students to play active roles as international leaders reaching across the boundaries of professional areas.” This new trial, including overseas internship programmes, is unique as it tries to provide “international liberal arts education that is capable of answering the needs of engineering st...

The definition of science and technology literacy is constantly changing reflecting the relation between science and society. The more recent one is not only for a person to understand science and its methodology, but also to be able to make a comprehensive judgment on the influences of science and technology on the society and to reflect the judgment on one's activities. In this paper, the author will first make a general survey of the views on science and technology literacy based on earlier domestic as well as foreign studies. Next, the author will make a survey of the questionnaires used as means to judge the "literacy," to know how and what they measured. The author then describes a new questionnaire developed as a part of this study designed to evaluate the literacy in connection with the social recognition, and the result of the survey conducted using the questionnaire, reporting its finding that it is necessary to propose a separate educational program for each cluster of people with different tendency.

The Enchytraeida Oligochaeta Enchytraeus japonensis propagates asexually by spontaneous autotomy. Normally, each of the 5-10 fragments derived from a single worm regenerates a head anteriorly and a tail posteriorly. Occasionally, however, a head is formed posteriorly in addition to the normal anterior head, resulting in a bipolar worm. This phenomenon prompted us to conduct a series of experiments to clarify how the head and the tail are determined during regeneration in this species. The results showed that (1) bipolar head regeneration occurred only after artificial amputation, and not by spontaneous autotomy, (2) anesthesia before amputation raised the frequency of bipolar head regeneration, and (3) an extraordinarily high proportion of artificially amputated head fragments regenerated posterior heads. Close microscopic observation of body segments showed that each trunk segment has one specific autotomic position, while the head segments anterior to the VIIth segment do not. Only the most posterior segment VII in the head has an autotomic position. Examination just after amputation found that the artificial cutting plane did not correspond to the normal autotomic position in most cases. As time passed, however, the proportion of worms whose cutting planes corresponded to the autotomic position increased. It was suspected that the fragments autotomized after the artificial amputation (corrective autotomy). This post-amputation autotomy was probably inhibited by anesthesia. The rate at which amputated fragments did not autotomize corresponded roughly to the rate of bipolar regeneration. It was hypothesized then that the head regenerated posteriorly if a fragment was not amputated at the precise autotomic position from which it regenerated without succeeding in corrective autotomy.

In this special lesson, students learned about the relationship between the background of Bayesianism and its application, Bayesian statistics through a series of lectures and map-making of it by themselves. With this practice, we revealed an applicable framework of epistemology of statistics to education. Second, we organized and conducted a symposium on statistical epistemology in CLMPST, an international conference of philosophy of science, which was held in Prague in 2019. In this symposium, we discussed particularly Bayesian epistemology and explicated a roadmap toward settlement of philosophical conflicts between Beyesianism and frequentism.

Based on this research subject, Hokkaido University CoSTEP resumed risk communication classes from fiscal 2016. 15 students from the Faculty of Agriculture, Engineering and Science and 7 from the high school teachers and private companies attended the classes. A total of 22 people attended in 3 years. The purpose of this class is to develop human resources who are responsible for risk communication. Every year in September, we visited the towns around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and conducted inspections and interviews about radiation risks. These results were reported on March 26, 2018 in Fukushima City sponsored by the Reconstruction Agency. We also presented at the 31st Japan Society for Risk Research (Fukushima meeting) on November 9, 2018 and other some meetings of the academic society of Japan. And we also published in Japanese Journal of Radiation Safety Management about the educational effects of this class.

Here, the main research results are described. Detailed reports were published on the website "Research Capability Analysis Metrics Project Report" https://www.ruconsortium.jp/site/tf/248.html). In this study, when comparing research capabilities as group performance in universities, we found that there are research capabilities that cannot be captured only by conventional indicators of "quantity" and "quality", and we defined this as "Atsumi". We proposed the institutional h5-index as one of the indicators to measure the "Atsumi" of university research capabilities. In addition, we proposed new indicators to measure internationality and indicators to measure research results in humanities and social sciences.

Since the nuclear power plant accident at Fukushima, risk communication to discuss the risk of radioactive contamination has been implemented so many times in Japan. But many of the risk communication become only enlightening explanatory meeting. Government and stakeholders have not been able to make a two-way dialogue between the experts and citizens. To overcome this situation, the risk communicators are needed by society. Risk communicators can send accurate risk information while consideration to recipients. We think we should educate risk communicators as described below. In this study, we revealed three skills expected by the practice from 2014 to 2015 at Hokkaido University. The first skill is to produce contents by devising for information transmission, and the second skill is to create a forum for dialogue. The third skill " Framing "is necessary to set the appropriate agenda. We came to the conclusion that these three skills are important for risk communicator education.

In this study I practiced education program of science communication for science and engineering students, and explored the evaluation method. The Fields of this study were Tokyo Institute of Technology (FYH2011, 2012) and Hokkaido University (FY2013, 2014). While slightly changed the framework by changing the field, I conducted the following practices and research. 1) The design of communication and learning program in collaboration with university students and graduate students and civil such as school teachers and working adults. 2) A development of the evaluation method of science communication program. For the evaluation method, it were examined visualization by the awareness of science communication used network analysis, and rubric for the formative evaluation.
