Reidar Maliks; Elisabeth Theresia Widmer, Government or Citizens? Kant and Johann Adam Bergk on Constitutional Patriotism
Routledge, Jun. 2025, 9781032851907, 256, 136-157, English, Scholarly book, This chapter aims to bring to the fore the concepts of republican patriotism in Kant and his radical follower Johann Adam Bergk in late eighteenth-century Germany, a time of political upheaval and the rise of Enlightenment ideals, delving into their starkly contrasting perspectives. In Theory and Practice (1793) and the Metaphysics of Morals (1797), Kant established the idea of “constitutional patriotism,” arguing that patriotism is possible only under the republican constitution with separation of powers and representation. Notably, he claimed that it is the government, not the subjects, that should demonstrate patriotism. To achieve this, an existing autocratic government must initiate the reforms towards a republican constitution. Bergk, in his Untersuchungen aus dem Natur-, Staats- und Völkerrechte (1796), inherited Kant's idea of constitutional patriotism. However, unlike Kant, he developed the idea of fostering civic patriotism from a perfectionist standpoint rather than establishing a patriotic government. He, therefore, provided a theory of systematically promoting civic patriotism through national education, freedom of the press, and public festivities. For Bergk, the patriotism of citizens is crucial for promoting perfection through self-activity., 33630193, [Peer-reviewed], [Contributor]

Takuya Saito, Kant on patriotism: ‘civic dignity’ and ‘way of thinking’
De Gruyter, 2020, 9783110661200, x, 330 p., 303-324, English, Scholarly book, In this paper I will examine Kant’s patriotism from the perspective of ‘way of thinking’ (Denkungsart) as its background theory. Kant’s patriotism provides the practical reasoning to develop the idea of a republican constitution, which protects the rights of man through legislation of the common will in the form of representative democracy. His line of argument leads him to criticize despotism and the hereditary order (‘dignity of the nobility’) for betraying the principles of civil freedom and civil equality (‘dignity of a citizen’). Despotic rulers should take up this form of patriotism by promoting the idea of the ‘original contract’ and reforming government. Kant’s analysis of the enthusiasm and sympathy for the French Revolution shows that this republic-oriented patriotism is possible even under a despotic regime, because it is not a mere attachment to a positive order, but based on ‘way of thinking.’, 33630194, [Contributor]
