This paper proposes a new composition rule for discourse particles and prosodic morphemes that paratactically-associate with the main text. Furthermore, the data and analyses support the framework of inquisitive semantics since the morphemes at issue often embed both declarative and interrogative clauses.

© 2018, Springer Nature B.V. This paper explores how discourse markers contribute to the update of discourse through a detailed study of Mandarin dique ‘indeed’ and zhende ‘really’. On the basis of empirical data and a naturalness rating experiment, we show that dique and zhende make similar yet different contributions to discourse updates. Dique presupposes that its prejacent issue is old, while zhende presupposes that its prejacent issue is old and that some discourse participant has failed to resolve this issue. Furthermore, dique and zhende can embed both assertions and questions. This supports Farkas and Bruce’s (2010) Table stack model, which provides a uniform treatment for assertions and questions.

We formalize the causal component of Davis & Hara’s (2014) analysis of Japanese evidentiality, which defines “indirect evidence” as an observation of the effect state of the cause-effect dependency. The analysis correctly predicts that uttering p-youda only commits the speaker to ‘if p, q must be true’ but not to the prejacent p, and successfully derives the asymmetry between the prejacent p and the evidence source q. Also, the results of the rating study and the corpus study show that the interpretation and the distribution of evidentials are subject to the cause-effect dependencies.

© Springer International Publishing AG 2017. Cantonese has a number of sentence-final particles which serve various communicative functions. This paper looks into two of the most frequently used particles, wo3 and lo1. We propose that wo3 and lo1 are expressive items: Wo3 indicates unexpectedness of the propositional content or the current discourse move, while lo1 indicates expectedness of the propositional content or the current discourse move. We employ Default Logic to characterize the notion of (un)expectedness by normality conditionals. The analysis has a further implication on the Gricean Cooperative Principle in that the use of wo3 and lo1 makes reference to the general world knowledge which includes conditions on how the discourse should normally proceed.

This paper examines the semantics of prosodic cues that enhance the bias meaning of negative polar questions in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. We propose a semantic denotation for each phonetic phenomenon: Mandarin sentence-final stress marks the salience of the proposition with the opposite polarity to that of the surface proposition, while Japanese deaccentuation marks the givenness of the positive answer. The proposed semantics compositionally derives the observed discourse effects. The second part of the paper reports two naturalness rating experiments, which further support the empirical bases of our semantic analyses. Taken together, our study demonstrates the significant interaction between prosodic cues and contexts. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Copyright 2014 by Yurie Hara. This paper analyzes four kinds of Cantonese polar questions, HO2, ME1, AA4 and A-NOTA questions in the framework of radical inquisitive semantics (Groenendijk & Roelofsen, 2010; Aher, 2012; Sano, 2014). HO2, ME1 and A-NOT-A questions have multidimensional semantics. In addition to their primary speech act of questioning, HO2 and ME1 interrogatives encode secondary assertive acts of positive and negative expectations, respectively, while A-NOT-A interrogatives conventionally encode lack of expectation, hence the neutral requirement. In contrast, AA4 interrogatives are semantically simplex question acts, thus they can be used in both biased and neutral contexts.

This paper proposes a syntax and semantics of nominalized clauses headed by koto in Japanese. We argue that the koto-nominalized clause can denote either a concrete event or an abstract proposition. Koto serves as a maximality operator for clauses as well as NPs. The sentential koto is syntactically ambiguous depending on the structure with which koto merges. Finally, our analysis also has a strong implication for the linguistic distinction between physical causation and causal judgment. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Peranakan Javanese (PNJ) is a relatively undescribed variety of Javanese spoken primarily by ethnic Chinese native speakers of Javanese in the city of Semarang in Central Java (Indonesia). PNJ makes a structural distinction between auxiliaries and main verbs. Auxiliaries are unique in that they undergo optional head movement to C. Not only do single auxiliaries move to C, as in familiar languages, but sequences of two or three auxiliaries can move to C as well. Significantly, the order of the moved auxiliaries is always the same as the order in their unmoved position. The distribution of auxiliaries in PNJ is predicted if a tucking in (Richards 1997) analysis of head movement similar to that of Collins (2002) is adopted. The PNJ facts are of special interest not only because they are an example of an additional language/construction that shows the distribution expected on the basis of tucking in, but also because PNJ provides evidence that helps to distinguish between a head movement analysis and the standard version of the remnant movement analysis, in which adverbs occupy fixed positions in the clause. It is quite difficult to distinguish between these approaches empirically, so the PNJ auxiliary facts are important in this regard. © 2008 Cambridge University Press.

There is a parallelism between contrastive marking and evidential marking with respect to their distribution among adjunct clauses. I take this fact to show that both contrastive marking and evidential marking express some attitude towards a closed proposition, following Johnston's (1994) analysis that the semantics of temporal and if-clauses involve event quantification while that of because-clauses is a relation between two particular events. Furthermore, this association between the implicature and the attitude-holder cannot be established in certain constructions, namely adjunct clauses and relative clauses. Hence, I argue that the computation of contrastive marking involves an island-sensitive movement of an operator. © The Author 2008. Published by Oxford University Press. All rights reserved.

Some studies have assumed that prosodic patterns of sentences are exclusively determined by the rules of accented expressions, with deaccenting of non-focused elements playing little or no role [1, 2]. However, many researchers have also recognized the importance of deaccenting rules [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. This paper documents two intonational patterns of Japanese biased questions,"Rise with Accents" and"Rise with Deaccentuation", used by young speakers of the Tokyo dialect for Japanese biased questions. We argue that Japanese data furthers the deaccenting-as-rule view. Specifically, deaccentuation in biased questions has recently gained a grammaticalized status, and now gives rise to a Givenness presupposition. Moreover, the presuppositions of Bias and Givenness form a scale, i.e., Given ⊂ Bias, which interacts with MAXIMIZE PRESUPPOSITION [8]. Our proposal also naturally extends to the evidential hierarchy proposed in the literature.

It has been observed that contrastive-markings in various languages are associated with uncertainty implicatures. However, a sentence can be contrastive-marked even when the speaker has a complete answer to the question, as long as one of the alternatives have an opposite value from the rest. Following the analyses by Spector 2003 and Schulz and van Rooij (in press) on exhaustivity and the Gricean Principle, this paper claims that Contrastive-marking presupposes that the speaker's knowledge is not maximal.

Mental Architecture for Processing and Learning of Language (MAPLL) and Tokyo Conference on Psycholinguistics (TCP) 2017ワークショップ、Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics 14およびThe 21st Amsterdam Colloquiumといった国際学会で発表した。The 2nd Asian Junior Linguistics conferenceにおいては、plenary speakerとして招聘講演をおこなった。さらに、証拠性と因果関係の相関性を示すため、コーパス分析を行い、国立国語研究所で行われた、 Prosody and Grammar Festa 2で成果を発表した。29年度後半は、次年度実施予定の証拠性文末表現のEEG実験の準備を行った。また、De Gruyter Moutonから出版される、Handbook of Japanese Semantics and Pragmaticsに寄稿するEvidentialityの章を執筆した。 Inquisitiveness Below and Beyond the Sentence Boundaryで発表した。

Formal Approaches to the Relation of Tense,Aspect and Modalityで発表した。
