    © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Activation cross sections of the deuteron-induced reactions on 89Y were measured up to 24 MeV deuteron energy. The experiment was performed at the RIKEN AVF cyclotron. Excitation functions of the reactions 89Y(d,x)88,89Zr, 88,90mY, 87mSr were obtained by using the stacked-foil activation method and gamma-ray spectrometry. The results were compared with previous experimental data and the prediction of the TALYS nuclear reaction model code adopted from TENDL-2017 library. Physical thick target yield of 89Zr was derived from the measured cross sections.

    Activation cross sections of alpha-induced reactions on natural erbium were measured using a 50.9-MeV alpha-beam at the RIKEN AVF cyclotron. Well-established methods for the measurements, the stacked-foil activation technique and gamma-ray spectrometry, were used. Production cross sections of 166,169Yb and 165,166,167,168,170,173Tm were determined. This is the first measurement of the cross sections of 166,170Tm. The integral yield of the medical radionuclide 169Yb was derived from the measured excitation function.

As an alternative production route for the medically interesting 178mTa isotope production cross sections of alpha particle induced nuclear reaction of the natHf(α,x)178W–178mTa process was investigated. Activation method, stacked target technique, and high resolution off-line γ-ray spectrometry were applied. Excitation functions of the natHf(α,x)178W reaction and of several other side reactions were determined up to 51 MeV. Activation cross section data were determined for the following reactions: natHf(α,x)176,177,178W, natHf(α,x)175,176,177,178g,180g,182g,183Ta, and natHf(α,x)173,175,179m2,180m,181Hf. The measured experimental data were compared with the results of earlier experimental data and the results of TALYS nuclear reaction model code calculation tabulated in the TENDL-2017 data library. Experimental data are presented for the first time in the 40–50 MeV energy region. Thick target yields were calculated for elemental hafnium target using the fitted experimental cross section data.

    © 2019 Elsevier B.V. An experiment of α-induced reactions on yttrium-89 was performed to investigate the excitation functions of 89Zr and 90Nb, which are suitable for immuno-PET studies. The stacked-foil method, activation technique, and off-line γ-ray spectrometry were used for this investigation. The excitation functions of 92m,91m,89m,89gNb,88Zr, and 90m,88g,87m,87gY were also derived and compared with earlier experimental and the TENDL-2017 data. Good agreements with part of the previous studies were found.

Isotope-production cross sections for p-, d-, and C-induced spallation reactions on Nb93 at 113 MeV/nucleon were measured using the inverse-kinematics method employing secondary targets of CH2, CD2, and C. The measured cross sections for Mo90, Nb90, Y86,88 produced by p-induced reactions were found to be consistent with those measured by the conventional activation method. We performed benchmark tests of the reaction models INCL-4.6, JQMD, and JQMD-2.0 implemented in the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) and of the nuclear data libraries JENDL-4.0/HE, TENDL-2017, and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The model calculations also showed generally good agreement with the measured isotope-production cross sections for p-, d-, and C-induced reactions. It also turns out that, among the three nuclear data libraries, JENDL-4.0/HE provides the best agreement with the measured data for the p-induced reactions. We compared the present Nb93 data with the Zr93 data, that were measured previously by the same inverse kinematics method (Kawase et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2017, 093D03 (2017)2050-391110.1093/ptep/ptx110), with particular attention to the effect of neutron-shell closure on isotope production in p- and d-induced spallation reactions. The isotopic distributions of the measured production cross sections in the Zr93 data showed noticeable jumps at neutron number N=50 in the isotopic chains of ΔZ=0 and -1, whereas no such jump appeared in isotopic chain of ΔZ=0 in the Nb93 data. From INCL-4.6 + GEM calculations, we found that the jump formed in the evaporation process is smeared out by the intranuclear cascade component in Nb91 produced by the Nb93(p,p2n) and (d,d2n) reactions on Nb93. Moreover, for Nb93, the distribution of the element-production cross sections as a function of the change in proton number ΔZ is shifted to smaller ΔZ than for Zr93, because the excited Nb prefragments generated by the cascade process are more likely to emit protons than the excited Zr prefragments, due to the smaller proton-separation energies of the Nb isotopes.

    © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Activation cross sections of α-particle induced reactions on natYb were measured. The stacked foil technique, the activation method and the γ-ray spectrometry were used. The stacked target consisted of natYb and natTi foils was irradiated with a 51.0-MeV α beam at the RIKEN AVF cyclotron. The γ rays emitted from the irradiated foils were measured using a high-resolution HPGe detector. Production cross sections of 170,171,172,173,175Hf, 171,172,173,177gLu and 169Yb were determined. The results were compared with previous experimental studies and theoretical calculations. For most of the reactions a consistent agreement was found.

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd Cross sections of α-induced reactions on natural zirconium were measured up to 50 MeV using the stacked-foil technique, activation method and high resolution γ-ray spectrometry. The production cross sections of 93m,99Mo, 90g,92m,95g,95m,96Nb and 88,89g,95Zr were determined and compared with other experimental data measured earlier and result of theoretical calculations. The integral thick target yield of 99Mo was deduced from the measured cross section data.

    Coulomb breakup reactions of Zr have been studied in inverse kinematics at incident beam energies of about 200 MeV/nucleon in order to evaluate neutron capture reaction methods. The Zr(n,)Zr reaction is particularly important as a candidate nuclear transmutation reaction for the long-lived fission product Zr in nuclear power plants. One- and two-neutron removal cross sections on Pb and C targets were measured to deduce the inclusive Coulomb breakup cross sections, 375 29 (stat.) 30 (syst.) and 403 26 (stat.) 31 (syst.) mb for Zr and Zr, respectively. The results are compared with estimates using the standard Lorentzian model and microscopic calculations. The results reveal a possible contribution of the pygmy dipole resonance or giant quadrupole resonance in the Coulomb breakup reactions of Zr.

    The production cross sections of 68,69Ge and 66,67Ga by α-induced reactions on natZn have been measured using the stacked-foil activation method and off-line γ-ray spectrometry from their threshold energies to 50.7 MeV. The derived cross sections were compared with the previous experimental data and the calculated values in the TENLD-2017 library. Our result shows a slightly larger amplitude than the previous data at the peak, though the peak energy is consistent with them.

    © 2018 Elsevier B.V. The production of 117mSn by charged-particle induced reactions is an interesting topic for medical application. Production cross sections of α-induced reactions on natIn for 117mSn up to 50 MeV were measured using the stacked foil technique and activation method. The integral yield of 117mSn was estimated using the measured cross sections. The results were compared with experimental data investigated earlier and theoretical calculation. Measured cross sections for 113Sn and 116m,117,118mSb isotopes were also presented.

Activation cross sections for deuteron-induced reactions on natural palladium were measured up to 24 MeV using the stacked-foil method and the high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy. The production cross sections of 103Ag, the parent of a medical radioactive isotope 103Pd, were obtained. We found that our result is in good agreement with the previous data up to 20.3 MeV, and obtained new data at higher energies. In addition, the production cross sections of 104g+mAg, 105Ag, 106mAg, 110mAg and 111Ag were presented.

    Cross sections of alpha particle induced nuclear reactions on iridium were investigated using a 51.2-MeV alpha particle beam. The standard stacked-foil target technique and the activation method were applied. The activity of the reaction products was assessed without chemical separation using high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. Excitation functions for production of gold, platinum and iridium isotopes (196m2Au, 196m,gAu, 195m,gAu, 194Au, 193 m,gAu, 192Au, 191m,gAu, 191Pt, 195mPt, 194gIr, 194mIr, 192gIr, 190gIr and 189Ir) were determined and compared with available earlier measured experimental data and results of theoretical calculations using TALYS code system. Cross section data were reported for the first time for the natIr(α,x)196m2Au, natIr(α,x)196m,gAu, natIr(α,x)191Pt, natIr(α,x)195mPt, natIr(α,x)194gIr, natIr(α,x)194mIr, natIr(α,x)190gIr and natIr(α,x)189Ir processes. A possible production route for 195mPt, the potentially important radionuclide in nuclear medicine, is discussed.

Production cross sections of residual nuclei via proton- and deuteron-induced spallation reactions on 91,92Y, 92,93Zr, and 93,94Nb at projectile energies around 100 MeV/nucleon were measured in inverse kinematics at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Noticeable jumps in the measured cross sections of isotone production appear between the neutron numbers N=51 and 50 for target nuclei with the initial neutron number Ninit=53 (92Y, 93Zr, and 94Nb), while such jump is not clearly seen for target nuclei with Ninit=52 (91Y, 92Zr, and 93Nb). The measured isotopic production cross sections are compared with PHITS calculations considering both the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes in order to benchmark the reaction models.

The isotopic distribution of the production cross sections of 136Xe on proton and carbon at 168 MeV/u were obtained in inverse kinematics technique at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The target dependence at 168 MeV/u was investigated systematically. The cross sections measured in the present work are compared with the previous results obtained at different reaction energies to investigate the energy dependence for the reactions on proton. The experimental results on proton are compared with the PHITS calculations including both the cascade and evaporation processes for the model benchmarking.

Isotopic production cross sections were measured for proton- and deuteron-induced reactions on 93Nb by means of the inverse kinematics method at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The measured production cross sections of residual nuclei in the reaction 93Nb + p at 113 MeV/u were compared with previous data measured by the conventional activation method in the proton energy range between 46 and 249 MeV. The present inverse kinematics data of four reaction products (90Mo, 90Nb, 88Y, and 86Y) were in good agreement with the data of activation measurement. Also, the model calculations with PHITS describing the intra-nuclear cascade and evaporation processes generally well reproduced the measured isotopic production cross sections.

Isotopic production cross sections in the proton-and deuteron-induced spallation reactions on 93Zr at an energy of 105 MeV/u were measured in inverse kinematics conditions for the development of realistic nuclear transmutation processes for long-lived fission products (LLFPs) with neutron and light-ion beams. The experimental results were compared to the PHITS calculations describing the intra-nuclear cascade and evaporation processes. Although an overall agreement was obtained, a large overestimation of the production cross sections for the removal of a few nucleons was seen. A clear shell effect associated with the neutron magic number N = 50 was observed in the measured isotopic production yields of Zr and Y isotopes, which can be reproduced reasonably by the PHITS calculation.

    © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017. Spallation reactions for the long-lived fission products 137Cs, 90Sr and 107Pd have been studied for the purpose of nuclear waste transmutation. The cross sections on the proton- and deuteron-induced spallation were obtained in inverse kinematics at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Both the target and energy dependences of cross sections have been investigated systematically. and the cross-section differences between the proton and deuteron are found to be larger for lighter fragments. The experimental data are compared with the SPACS semi-empirical parameterization and the PHITS calculations including both the intra-nuclear cascade and evaporation processes.

    © 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Spallation reaction study has been performed for the long-lived fission products 137Cs, 90Sr and 107Pd. Isotopic cross sections on proton and deuteron were obtained by using the inverse kinematics technique at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. It was found that the deuteron-induced cross sections are larger than the proton-induced ones for the light-mass products. The experimental data were compared with the SPACS semi-empirical parameterization and a theoretical calculation including both the intra-nuclear cascade and evaporation models by the PHITS transport code. It was found that the spallation reaction could be a promising mechanism for the transmutation of 137Cs and 90Sr due to the large total cross section.

    The structures of the first excited states of mirror Be-9 and B-9 nuclei are studied by using the alpha + alpha + N three-body model and the complex scaling method. The resonance energy with a decay width of the 1/2(+) state of B-9 is calculated by taking into account the consistency with photodisintegration cross sections of Be-9 into the 1/2(+) state. We also compare the results with the measured data and other theories.

    The nuclear transmutation is a technology to dispose of radioactive wastes. However, we do not have enough basic data for its developments, such as thick-target yields (TTY) and the interaction cross sections for radioactive material. We suggest two methods to estimate the TTY using inverse kinematics and to obtain the excitation function of the interaction cross sections which is named the thick-target transmission (T3) method. We deduce the energy-dependent conversion relation between the TTYs of the original system and its inverse kinematics, which can be replaced to a constant coefficient in the high energy region. Furthermore we show the usefulness of the T3 method to investigate the excitation function of the C-12 + Al-27 reaction in the simulation.

    Cross sections of alpha particle induced nuclear reactions have been measured on thin natural cadmium targets foils in the energy range from 11 to 51.2 MeV. This work was a part of our systematic study on excitation functions of light ion induced nuclear reactions on different target materials. Regarding the cross sections, the alpha induced reactions are not deeply enough investigated. Some of the produced isotopes are of medical interest, others have application in research and industry. The radioisotope Sn-117m is a very important theranostic (therapeutic + diagnostic) radioisotope, so special care was taken to the results for that isotope. The well-established stacked foil technique followed by gamma-spectrometry with HPGe gamma spectrometers were used. The target and monitor foils in the stack were commercial high purity metal foils. From the irradiated targets Sn-117m, Sn-113, Sn-110, In-117m,In-g, In-116m, In-115m, In-114m, In-113m, In-111, In-110m,In-g, In-109m, In-108m,In-g, Cd-115g and Cd-111m were identified and their excitation functions were derived. The results were compared with the data of the previous measurements from the literature and with the results of the theoretical nuclear reaction model code calculations TALYS 1.8 (TENDL-2015) and EMPIRE 3.2 (Malta). From the cross section curves thick target yields were calculated and compared with the available literature data.

    Sn-117m is one of the radioisotopes can be beneficially produced through alpha particle irradiation. The targets were prepared by deposition of Cd-116 metal onto high purity 12 mu m thick Cu backing. The average deposited thickness was 21.9 mu m. The beam energy was thoroughly measured by Time of Flight (TOF) methods and proved to be 51.2 MeV. For the experiment the well-established stacked foil technique was used. In addition to the Cd targets, Ti foils were also inserted into the stacks for energy and intensity monitoring. The Cu backings were also used for monitoring and as recoil catcher of the reaction products from the cadmium layer. The activities of the irradiated foils were measured with HPGe detector for gamma-ray spectrometry and cross section values were determined. As a result excitation functions for the formation of Sn-117m, In-117m,In-g, In-116m In-115m and Cd-115m,Cd-g from enriched Cd-116 were deduced and compared with the available literature data and with the results of the nuclear reaction model code calculations EMPIRE 3.2 and TALYS 1.8.     The cross sections of alpha particles induced nuclear reactions on natural germanium were investigated by using the standard stacked foil target technique, the activation method and high resolution gamma spectrometry. Targets with thickness of about 1 mu m were prepared from natural Ge by vacuum evaporation onto 25 mu m thick polyimide (Kapton) backing foils. Stacks were composed of Kapton-Ge-Ge-Kapton sandwich target foils and additional titanium monitor foils with nominal thickness of 11 mu m to monitor the beam parameters using the Ti-nat(alpha,x)Cr-51 reaction. The irradiations were done with E-alpha = 20.7 and E-alpha = 51.25 MeV, I-alpha = 50 nA alpha particle beams for about 1 h. Direct or cumulative activation cross sections were determined for production of the Se-72,Se-73,Se-75, (71,72,74,76,78)AS and Ge-69 radionuclides: The obtained experimental cross sections were compared to the results of theoretical calculations taken from the TENDL data library based on the TALYS computer code. A comparison was made with available experimental data measured earlier. Thick target yields were deduced from the experimental cross sections and compared with the data published before.     We propose a method, called as thick-target transmission (T3) method, to obtain an excitation function of interaction cross sections. In an ordinal experiment to measure the excitation function of interaction cross sections by the transmission method, we need to change the beam energy for each cross section. In the T3 method, the excitation function is derived from the beam attenuations measured at the targets of different thicknesses without changing the beam energy. The advantage of the T3 method is the simplicity and availability for radioactive beams. To confirm the availability, we perform a simulation for the C-12 + Al-27 system with the PHITS code instead of actual experiments.     We study the integrated elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections together with their angular distributions of n + Li-6,Li-7 using n+ (alpha + d) and n+ (alpha + t) cluster models, respectively, and the continuum-discretized coupled-channel framework. The microscopic single-folding potential is used for the neutron energies from 1 to 24 MeV. The calculated elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections are in good agreement with experimental and evaluated data for the observed incident energies.

    As nuclear medicine community has shown an increasing interest in accelerator produced Tc-99m radionuclide, the possible alternative direct production routes for producing Tc-99m were investigated intensively. One of these accelerator production routes is based on the Mo-100(p,2n)Tc-99m reaction. The cross section of this nuclear reaction was studied by several laboratories earlier but the available data-sets are not in good agreement. For large scale accelerator production of Tc-99m based on the (100)mMo(p,2n)Tc-99m reaction, a well-defined excitation function is required to optimise the production process effectively. One of our recent publications pointed out that most of the available experimental excitation functions for the Mo-100 (p,2n)(99)mTc reaction have the same general shape while their amplitudes are different. To confirm the proper amplitude of the excitation function, results of three independent experiments were presented (Takacs et al., 2015). In this work we present results of a thick target count rate measurement of the E-gamma = 140.5 keV gamma-line from molybdenum irradiated by E-p = 17.9 MeV proton beam, as an integral benchmark experiment, to prove the cross section data reported for the Mo-100(p,2n)Tc-99m and Mo-100(p,pn)Mo-99 reactions in Takacs et al.     We have studied spallation reactions for the fission products Cs-137 and Sr-90 for the purpose of nuclear waste transmutation. The spallation cross sections on the proton and deuteron were obtained in inverse kinematics for the first time using secondary beams of Cs-137 and Sr-90 at 185 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The target dependence has been investigated systematically, and the cross-section differences between the proton and deuteron are found to be larger for lighter spallation products. The experimental data are compared with the PHITS calculation, which includes cascade and evaporation processes. Our results suggest that both proton- and deuteron-induced spallation reactions are promising mechanisms for the transmutation of radioactive fission products. (C) 2016 The Authors.     To dispose of long-lived fission products (LLFP) ejected from nuclear reactor plants is one of the most important tasks on nuclear physics and engineering. The experiments with the radiative target are limited, due to the high radioactivity and chemical property of the target. In consequence, the nuclear reaction data for LLFP are insufficient. In this work, we propose a feasible method to obtain the data for radiative targets using inverse kinematics and simulate specific systems to evaluate the thick-target yields of the nuclear transmutation reactions for LLFP.

    The photodisintegration cross section of the Be-9(1/2(+)) state is investigated in a framework of the alpha + alpha + n three-body model. The 1/2(+) state of Be-9 locates just above the three-body threshold, and the s-wave neutron property of this state is a long-standing problem. It has been a topic of quite interest in relation to the breakup mechanism of Be-9 into the Be-8(0(+)) + n and (alpha + alpha + n) channels.

    We study the character of the first excited 1 / 2 + state of Be 9, which is observed as a low-lying sharp peak in the cross section of Be 9 (γ, n) 2 He 4 just above the Be 8 + n threshold. Using the α + α + n three-body model, we describe the ground and excited unbound states of Be 9 above the α + α + n threshold. Applying the complex scaling method to the three-body model, we find no 1 / 2 + resonant solutions with the scaling angle of θ ≤ 15, while the low-lying peak in the photodisintegration cross section is reproduced in the present calculation. It is found that the Be 8 + n continuum states dominate the low-lying peak in the cross section. Furthermore, using the analytical continuation of the coupling constant of the three-body interaction for the α + α + n system, we discuss the virtual-state character of the 1 / 2 + state.

    The thick-target yield CITY) is a macroscopic quantity reflected by nuclear reactions and matter properties of targets. In order to evaluate TTys on radioactive targets, we suggest a conversion method from inverse kinematics corresponding to the reaction of radioactive beams on stable targets. The method to deduce the TTY is theoretically derived from inverse kinematics. We apply the method to the Cu-nat(C-12,X)Na-24 reaction to confirm availability. In addition, it is applied to the Cs-137 + C-12 reaction as an example of a radioactive system and discussed a conversion coefficient of a TTY measurement. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The nuclear medicine community has been expressing concerns world wide regarding shortages of Tc-99m supply based on fission production of Mo-99 from highly enriched uranium (HEU) to prepare Mo-99/Tc-99m generators. As an alternative to reactor produced Mo-99/Tc-99m generator technology, the direct production of Tc-99m on accelerators is considered. There are a number of methods of using accelerators to produce Tc-99m and/or Mo-99. Direct production of Tc-99m on highly enriched Mo-100 target using cyclotrons is interesting for energies up to 20 MeV, so as to minimize the impurities from additional open reaction channels. To estimate the quality of the accelerator produced Tc-99m all the possible reaction routes should be mapped which could be potentially involved in this technology. However, a well defined excitation function for the Mo-100(p,2n)Tc-99m primary reaction is needed, in order to achieve acceptable good results in assessing the quality of the accelerator-produced Tc-99m by theoretical calculations. Most of the available experimental cross section data series for the Mo-100(p,2n)Tc-99m reaction have the same general shape while their amplitudes are different. A large difference more than a factor of two may, indeed, be observed between the lowest and the highest datasets values. The aim of this study was therefore to get a new evaluation for the Mo-100(p,2n)Tc-99m cross section, through three independent experiments, aiming at a more confident estimation about the amplitude of the excitation function.     The International Network of Nuclear Reaction Data Centres (NRDC) coordinated by the IAEA Nuclear Data Section (NDS) successfully collaborates in the maintenance and development of the EXFOR library. As the scope of published data expands (e.g. to higher energy, to heavier projectile) to meet the needs of research and applications, it has become a challenging task to maintain both the completeness and accuracy of the EXFOR library. Evolution of the library highlighting recent developments is described.

    Although the resonance structures of alpha+alpha+n have been studied experimentally and theoretically, it is still necessary to have more accurate and comprehensive understandings of the structure and decay of the low-lying excited states in Be-9. To perform calculations of an alpha+alpha+n system, we investigate five resonant states of alpha+alpha subsystem by utilizing different potential parameters and basis functions. In addition, two resonance states of alpha+n subsystem are computed.

    We apply the complex scaling method to the calculation of scattering phase shifts and extract the contributions of resonances in a phase shift and a cross section. The decomposition of the phase shift is shown to be useful in understanding the roles of resonant and nonresonant continuum states. As examples, we apply this method to several two-body systems: (i) a schematic model with the Gyarmati potential, which produces many resonances, (ii) the alpha-alpha system, which has a Coulomb barrier potential in addition to an attractive nuclear interaction, and (iii) the alpha-n system, which has no barrier potential. Using different kinds of potentials, we discuss the reliability of this method to investigate the resonance structure in the phase shifts and cross sections.

    The photo-disintegration cross section of Be-9 is investigated in a framework of the alpha + alpha + n three-body cluster model. Much interest is concentrated on the nature of the 1/2(+) state of Be-9 located just above the three-body threshold. The existence of this 1/2(+) resonance is a long-standing problem and has been a topic of quite interest in relation to the breakup mechanism of Be-9 into the Be-8(0(+))+n and (alpha + alpha +n) channels. The newly measured breakup cross sections of the 1/2(+) state of Ref. [1] is inconsistent with the old experimental values [2, 3]. The purpose of this study is to clarify the properties of the 1/2(+) state of Be-9 with the possibility of a genuine three-body (alpha + alpha + n) resonance or the two-body (Be-8(0(+))+n) virtual state.

    We study 7Li(n, n′)7Li* reactions by using the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) method with the complex Jeukenne-Lejeune-Mahaux effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. In this study, the 7Li nucleus is described by an α+t cluster model. The calculated elastic cross sections for incident energies between 11.5 and 24.0 MeV show good agreements with experimental data. Furthermore, we calculate the neutron spectra of 7Li ground and excited breakup states measured at selected angular points for incident energies of 11.5 and 18.0 MeV. The results reproduce the observed data systematically. © 2012 American Physical Society.

    The metal-free (Population III: Pop. III) and extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars of low- and intermediate-masses experience mixing of hydrogen into the helium convection during the early TP-AGB phase, differently from the metal-rich stars. We have studied nucleosynthesis in the helium convective zone with C-13 formed from mixed protons as a neutron source by using a nuclear network from H through S. In the absence or scarcity of pristine metals, neutron-recycling reactions, C-12 (n, gamma) C-13 (alpha, n) O-16 and also O-16 (alpha, gamma) O-17 (alpha, n) Ne-20 promote the synthesis of 0 and light elements, including their neutron-rich isotopes and the odd atomic number elements. Based on the results, we demonstrate that the peculiar abundance patterns of C through Al observed for the three most iron-deficient, carbon-rich stars can be reproduced in terms of nucleosynthesis in Pop. III, AGB stars in three different mass ranges. We argue that these three stars were born as low-mass members of Pop. Ill binaries, and later were subjected to surface pollution by mass transfer in the binary systems. It is also shown that AGB nucleosynthesis with hydrogen mixing explains the abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, and Al observed for most of carbon-enhanced EMP (CEMP) stars, including all CEMP-s stars with s-process elements. In addition, the present results are used to single out nucleosynthetic signatures of the early generations of stars other than AGB stars.

    The metal-free (Population III: Pop. III) and extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars of low-and intermediate-masses experience mixing of hydrogen into the helium convection during the early TP-AGB phase, differently from the metal-rich stars. We have studied nucleosynthesis in the helium convective zone with 13C formed from mixed protons as a neutron source by using a nuclear network from H through S.     We describe the construction of a database of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars in the Galaxy. Our database contains detailed elemental abundances, reported equivalent widths, atmospheric parameters, photometry, and binarity status, compiled from papers in the literature that report on studies of EIMP halo stars with [Fe/H] <= -2.5. The compilation procedures for this database were designed to assemble data effectively from electronic tables available from online journals. We have also developed a data retrieval system that enables data searches by various criteria and illustrations to explore relationships between stored variables. Currently, our sample includes 1212 unique stars (many of which are studied by more than one group) with more than 15000 individual reported elemental abundances, covering relevant papers published by 2007 December. We discus; the global characteristics of the present database, as revealed by the EMP stars observed to date. For stars with [Fe/H] <= -2.5, the number of giants with reported abundances is larger than that of dwarfs by a factor of two. The fraction of carbon-rich stars (among the sample for which the carbon abundance is reported) amounts to similar to 30% for [Fe/H] <= -2.5. We find that known binaries exhibit different distributions of the orbital period, according to wiether they are giants or dwarfs,, and also as a function of the metallicity, although the total sample of such stars is still quite small.

    The evolution of extremely metal-poor (EMP) Stars of low-/intermediate-masses is distinct from those of metal-rich stars in that the convection driven by the helium shell flash can extend outward into the hydrogen-rich layer during TP-AGB phase. In the circumstance of [Fe/H] < -2.5, protons are mixed and converted into neutrons in the convective zone to promote nucleosynthesis through neutron and a-captures. We study the nucleosynthesis in the helium-flash convective zone, induced by this hydrogen mixing. In the dearth of the pristine metals, the neutron-recycling reactions, C-12(n, gamma)C-13(alpha, n)O-16, and in some cases, the subsequent O-16(n, gamma)O-17(alpha, n)Ne-20, play an important role and catalyze the syntheses of O through Mg and still heavier elements. In particular, it is demonstrated that such peculiar abundance patterns of light elements from C through Al and heavy elements of Sr as observed from the two most iron-deficient stars, HE0107-5240 and HE1327-2326, can well be reproduced in terms of the nucleosynthesis in the metal-free and EMP AGB stars. In addition, the lack of Na and Al enhancement for a carbon-rich giant HE0557-4840 can be interpreted as the absence of neutron-capture reactions because of the negligible amount of proton ingestion. Based on these results, we assign their origin to the Pop III stars, born out of the primordial gas. We also discuss about the surface pollution both via the mass transfer in the binary systems and via the accretion of interstellar gas.

    The first stars in our Universe (Population II) are the useful probes for the star formation history in the very early Universe. These stars were born in the primordial gas cloud produced soon after the Big Bang and considered to be metal-free, i.e., comletely lack of elements heavier than lithium. In order to identify these survivors, we should consider the effect of changing surface abundances during their long lives. The surface abundances are modified by the accretion of gas from the interstellar matter and/or the binary mass transfer. The former possibly affects the iron group elements through the pollution of the parent cloud with the ejecta of supernovae. On the other hand, the latter can affect the abundance pattern of light and s-process elements through the evolution of primary star that experienced the internal mixing and dredge-up during thermally pulsating AGB before the final mass loss. The top three of the iron deficient stars HE1327-2326, HE0107-5240, and HE0557-4840 are reported as the candidates of the first stars by the current observations of extremely metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo. These stars have [Fe/H] < -4.5 and share the common feature of large enhancement of C. We argue that these abundance patterns are testified to the evolutionary characteristics of the first stars with low- and intermediate-mass by trying to constrain the mass of primary under the assumption that they were the suvivors of secondary stars in the binary system when they were born. We also argue that the binary scenario for these stars are validated with the merging history of the Galaxy. The considerations of stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and Galactic chemical evolution reveal that these three stars am promising candidate for the first stars.

    In extremely metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]less than or similar to - 2.5), hydrogen is mixed into the convection driven by helium flash and induces neutron-capture nucleosynthesis with the reactions, C-12(p,gamma)N-13(e(+)v)C-13(alpha,n)O-16, as the neutron source. We investigate the progress of this nucleosynthesis with use of nuclear network for a wide range of model parameters such as the amount of mixed hydrogen and the strength of helium flash. We reveal the characteristic abundance pattern from the light elements through the s-process elements, produced by alpha- and neutron-capture reactions under the extremely metal-poor condition. On the basis, we explore the possible modifications of surface abundances in the metal-free, Population III stars and discuss their relevance to the two most iron-deficient stars, HE0107-5240 and HE1327-2326, known to date.

    We apply our Monte Carlo method to the s-process element synthesis in the helium shell flash model for extremely metal-poor stars. We emphasize the importance of the reaction O-17(n gamma)O-18. It is presented that the uncertainty of this reaction rate affects the heaver elements abundance. We also discuss the variation of the O-Ne reaction paths with the uncertainty of the reaction rate of O-17(n gamma)O-18.

    The discoveries of two extremely iron-poor stars with [Fe/H]<-5, HE0107-5240 and HE1327-2326 provided the great opportunities of verifying whether these stars are the survivors of the first generation stars; the very weak lines of detected metals in their atmospheres can be extrinsic source that is the accretion from interstellar gas or from binary companion, rather than intrinsic one. In this work, we explore the possibility that these stars were born in binary systems from the primordial clouds by considering the results of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis in metal-free models of low to intermediate mass AGB stars. Observed abundance patterns for these 2 stars are in agreement with the results and can be explained by the binary scenario that observed stars disguise their surface abundances by the mass transfer in the binary system. In particular, we first demonstrated the reproduction of Sr without large enhancement of Ba through the neutron capture reactions in the helium flash convective region of AGB models without any iron seeds for s-process. The apparent lack of stars in -5 < [Fe/H] < -4 may suggest the effect of dilution by the surface convection at the red giant branch. If this is true, other Pop.III survivors can be discovered at the main sequence having [Fe/H] similar to -3, whose surface abundances are changed by the mass transfer from evolved companions in binary systems.

Determination of reaction paths is important to obtain the physical picture of stellar evolution. The combination of network calculation and our method gives us a better understanding of physical picture.     We investigate the nucleosynthesis in the helium flash convective zone, triggered by the hydrogen mixing, for extremely metal-poor stars of low and intermediate mass. Mixed hydrogen is converted into neutron through C-12(p,gamma)N-13(e+v)C-13(alpha,n)O-16 and the doubly neutron-recycling reactions C-12(n,gamma)C-13(alpha,n)O-16(n,gamma)O-17(alpha,n)Ne-20 operate. In addition to oxygen and neon, not only light elements from sodium through phosphorus but also the s-process elements, heavier than iron, are synthesized via successive neutron captures with Ne-20 as seeds even in the stars originally devoid of metals. We follow the both the doubly neutron-recycling reactions and the s-process nucleosynthesis up to Ph and Bi by varying model parameters such as the amount of mixed C-13. The resultant abundance patterns is shown to reproduce the observed enhancement not only of oxygen, the light elements but also Sr observed from HE 0107-5240 and HE 1327-2326.

    NACRE, the 'nuclear astrophysics compilation of reaction rates', has been widely utilized in stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis studies. Its update and extension programme started within a Konan-Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) collaboration. At the present moment, experimental data in refereed journals have been collected, and their theoretical extrapolations are being performed using the R-matrix or potential models. For the H-3(d,n)(4) He and H-2(p,gamma)(3) He reactions, we present preliminary results that could well reproduce the experimental data.

    Nuclear reaction rates are quantities of fundamental importance in astrophysics. Substantial efforts have been devoted in the last decades to measuring or calculating them. This paper presents a detailed description of the Brussels nuclear reaction rate library BRUSLIB and of the nuclear network generator NETGEN. BRUSLIB is made of two parts. The first one contains the 1999 NACRE compilation based on experimental data for 86 reactions with ( mainly) stable targets up to Si. BRUSLIB provides an electronic link to the published, as well as to a large body of unpublished, NACRE data containing adopted rates, as well as lower and upper limits. The second part of BRUSLIB concerns nuclear reaction rate predictions to complement the experimentally-based rates. An electronic access is provided to tables of rates calculated within a statistical Hauser-Feshbach approximation, which limits the reliability of the rates to reactions producing compound nuclei with a high enough level density. These calculations make use of global and coherent microscopic nuclear models for the quantities entering the rate calculations. The use of such models makes the BRUSLIB rate library unique. A description of the Nuclear Network Generator NETGEN that complements the BRUSLIB package is also presented. NETGEN is a tool to generate nuclear reaction rates for temperature grids specified by the user. The information it provides can be used for a large variety of applications, including Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the energy generation and nucleosynthesis associated with the non-explosive and explosive hydrogen to silicon burning stages, or the synthesis of the heavy nuclides through the s-, alpha- and r-, rp- or p-processes.

    We elaborate the binary scenario for the origin of HE0107-5240, the most metal-poor star yet observed ([Fe/H] = -5.3), using current knowledge of the evolution of extremely metal-poor stars. From the observed C/N value, we estimate the binary separation and period. Nucleosynthesis in a helium convective zone into which hydrogen has been injected allows us to discuss the origin of surface 0 and Na as well as the abundance distribution of s process elements. We can explain the observed abundances of C-12, C-13, N, 0, and Na and predict future observations to validate the Pop III nature of HE0107-5240.

    A web-based search and plot system for nuclear reaction data has been developed, covering experimental data in EXFOR format and evaluated data in ENDF format. The system is implemented for Linux OS, with Perl and MySQL used for CGI scripts and the database manager, respectively. Two prototypes for experimental and evaluated data are presented.

    We discuss the origin of HE 0107-5240, which, with a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -5.3, is the most iron-poor star yet observed. Its discovery has an important bearing on the question of the observability of first-generation stars in our universe. In common with other stars of very small metallicity (-4 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ -2.5), HE 0107-5240 shows a peculiar abundance pattern, including large enhancements of C, N, and O, and a more modest enhancement of Na. The observed abundance pattern can be explained by nucleosynthesis and mass transfer in a first-generation binary star, which, after birth, accretes matter from a primordial cloud mixed with the ejectum of a supernova. We elaborate the binary scenario on the basis of our current understanding of the evolution and nucleosynthesis of extremely metal-poor, low-mass model stars and discuss the possibility of discriminating this scenario from others. In our picture, iron-peak elements arise in surface layers of the component stars by accretion of gas from the polluted primordial cloud, pollution occurring after the birth of the binary. To explain the observed C, N, O, and Na enhancements, as well as the 12C/13C ratio, we suppose that the currently observed star, once the secondary in a binary, accreted matter from a chemically evolved companion, which is now a white dwarf. To estimate the abundances in the matter transferred in the binary, we rely on the results of computations of model stars constructed with up-to-date input physics. Nucleosynthesis in a helium-flash-driven convective zone into which hydrogen has been injected is followed, allowing us to explain the origin in the primary of the observed O and Na enrichments and to discuss the abundances of s-process elements. From the observed abundances, we conclude that HE 0107-5240 has evolved from a wide binary (of initial separation ∼20 AU) with a primary of initial mass in the range 1.2-3 M⊙. On the assumption that the system now consists of a white dwarf and a red giant, the present binary separation and period are estimated at ≃34 AU and a period of ≃150 yr, respectively. We also conclude that the abundance distribution of heavy s-process elements may hold the key to a satisfactory understanding of the origin of HE 0107-5240. An enhancement of [Pb/Fe] ≃ 1-2 should be observed if HE 0107-5240 is a second-generation star, formed from gas already polluted with iron-group elements. If the enhancement of main-line s-process elements is not detected, HE 0107-5240 may be a first-generation secondary in a binary system with a primary of mass less than 2.5 M⊙, born from gas of primordial composition, produced in the big bang, and subsequently subjected to surface pollution by accretion of gas from the parent cloud metal-enriched by mixing with the ejectum of a supernova.

    The Na, Mg, and Al abundance anomalies that have been observed in globular cluster red giants are hard to understand in terms of standard evolutionary scenarios, especially with regard to the depletion of (24)Mg. In previous papers, we have proposed a flash-assisted deep-mixing model that can burn (24)Mg and help explain the observed abundance anomalies. Relevant reaction rates have considerable uncertainties at low energies. Using NACRE reaction rates, we recompute the nucleosynthesis predicted by our model and, by adjusting reaction rates within current uncertainties, find that agreement with the observations is considerably improved for almost all isotopes except for (25)Mg, which remains overabundant. A resolution of the latter discrepancy by nuclear physics alone would require that the (25)Mg(p, gamma)(26)Al reaction rate be substantially larger than that given by the experiments. This suggests that our model may require burning of (25)Mg (coupled with some extra mixing) during quiescent hydrogen-burning phases.

    We discuss a new model of deep mixing in red giants caused by shell flashes triggered by the inward penetration of hydrogen into the helium core. The objective is to explain the large star-to-star variations of proton-capture elements that are observed among globular cluster red giants (Fujimoto, Aikawa, & Kato). The characteristics of this mixing model are explored by computing the products of nucleosynthesis during hydrogen shell flashes in red giants. It is shown that, during sufficiently strong flashes, both Mg-24 and Na-23 are depleted by burning. For moderately and very metal-poor clusters, the burned Mg-24 is converted mostly into Al-27. Thus, the model not only resolves the difficulties arising from the observed underabundance of Mg-24, but also removes the problem of sodium overproduction, which would otherwise accompany the aluminum enrichment observed. For moderately metal-poor cluster giants, Mg-25 and Mg-26 survive with nearly scaled-solar abundances, while for very metal-poor cluster giants, all the magnesium isotopes are depleted and aluminum also burns appreciably into Si-28. For metal-rich cluster giants, shell flashes are quenched before Mg-25 and Mg-26 can burn to synthesize aluminum. These properties agree well with the manner in which observed abundance anomalies vary with cluster metallicity, including the absence of large Al-enrichments for red giants in metal-rich clusters. From a detailed comparison with observed abundances in M13 giants, we deduce constraints on the strength of the mixing mechanism responsible for the inward penetration of hydrogen into the helium core. We discuss further implications of the present results, in particular the importance of star-star interactions for the proper understanding of the evolution of stars in globular clusters.

    A long-standing problem of large star to-star variations in the surface abundances of C, N, O, Na, and Al that is observed among red giant stars in globular clusters is discussed in the light of the recent finding by Shetrone that Mg-24 is reduced among the Al-enhanced stars. A new scenario of nucleosynthesis and element mixing is proposed, whereby the surface anomalies are explained as the consequence of the inward mixing of hydrogen followed by the outward mixing of nuclear products of hydrogen burning. If hydrogen is carried down into the helium core by some extra mixing mechanism, a hydrogen-burning shell flash is ignited. The flash forces the formation of a convective shell whose outer edge extends into hydrogen-rich layers, bringing in fresh hydrogen to fuel the hash further. During a hash, the temperature at the base of the flash-driven shell can become larger than the temperature in the hydrogen-burning shell during quiescent interflash evolution, and during the decay phase of the hash the nuclear products are dredged up by surface convection, which becomes deeper in mass than during the quiescent phases. The properties of shell flashes induced by the inward mixing of hydrogen are investigated by means of a semianalytical method to derive the conditions required for burning Mg-24 and producing Al via proton captures. The mixing inward of hydrogen at an abundance by mass X greater than or similar to 0.001 is enough to ignite shell flashes. The deeper hydrogen is mixed and the more massive the core, the stronger is the resultant shell flash and the larger are the temperatures in the hashing region. The burning of Mg-24 in the flash convective zone demands temperatures T greater than or similar to 8.5 x 10(7) K because of short duration of the flash. The necessary depth of hydrogen mixing can be as small as similar to 1.5 times the pressure scale height for a core mass M-c = 0.45 M., while it must be twice this for M-c = 0.3 M.. For M-c less than or similar to 0.25 M., the temperature never becomes large enough for Mg-24 to burn during shell hashes. In stars in metal poor clusters with [Fe/H] < -1, Al-27 is produced via the subsequent burning of Mg-25, Mg-26, and Al-26, while in stars in metal-rich clusters, the duration of a flash is too short for these burnings to occur. It is also predicted that significant enrichment of helium in the surface is necessarily attendant upon the Al/Mg abundance anomaly. In order to ignite shell hashes, the inward mixing of hydrogen has to take place on a timescale shorter than the lifetime of protons near the enter edge of the helium core; this lifetime varies from similar to 10(5) to similar to 10(4) yr, depending on the core mass. Hydrodynamical instabilities that are triggered by the inflow of angular momentum into the core are suggested as being responsible for the postulated inward mixing. The origin of this flow is attributed to star-star interactions in the dense environment of a globular cluster.

    The most unique aspect of the evolution of extremely metal-deficient stars is the mixing and nucleosynthesis, triggered by the erosion of hydrogen-rich material into the helium convection. It occurs during the helium shell flashes and results in the formation of a carbon star, enriched with C-13 and N-14. This differs from the third dredge-up in the Populations I and II AGE stars, which enriches C-12. The stars of mass M less than or equal to 1.1. and of metallicity [Fe/H] < -4 undergo this episode at the tip of red-giant branch when helium first ignites in the core. The rest of stars with M I 3M. and [Fe/H] < -2 postpone it until the helium shell flashes start at the base of AGE. More massive stars suffer from the surface abundance changes neither due to the hydrogen mixing nor to the third dredge-up for sufficiently low metallicity. The first generation stars that survive today show up as CN rich stars on the horizontal and asymptotic giant branches. Those in the binary systems may also be imprinted with the CN enhancement through the mass transfer from the companions. The Population III stars are most likely to be found among metal-deficient carbon stars.
