This research was designed to determine the oxygen consumption (OC) rates of hybrid red tilapia at nine different fish sizes (fs 1-9), ranging from 110 g to 956 g, at five water velocities (wv) each with three replicates, ranging from 0 to 40 cm∙s-1 using respirometers. A 5X9 factorial experiment, in randomized complete block design, showed highly significant (p<0.01) effects of both fish size and water velocity, as well as the interaction between them. The OC rates were highest in the first hour, then sharply decreased (p<0.05) by the second hour, and remained stable in the third hour. OC was significantly reduced as fish size increased. Additionally, average OC for all fish sizes was highest at water velocity of 0 cm∙s-1 and decreased sharply at 10 cm∙s-1. Fish in size groups fs 1-2 had lowest OC (0.09-0.19 mg∙l-1∙h-1∙100 g-1) at 10-20 cm.s-1, fs 3-4 had lowest OC (0.05-0.11 mg∙l-1∙h-1∙100 g-1) at 10-30 cm∙s-1, while fs 5-9 had lowest OC (0.03-0.08 mg∙l-1∙h-1∙100 g-1) at 10-40 cm∙s-1. An estimated simulation equation of oxygen consumption was best fitted in the power regression: OC = 0.686 – 0.002fs∙wv + 1.732x10-5fs2∙wv + 1.661×10-6fs2∙wv2-7.879×10-6fs3-3.985×10-8fs∙wv3 + 8.686x10-7wv4, with R2 = 0.874.

    © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. Pond soil quality is an important factor within aquaculture. A different characteristic may have different effects to the water quality. Fish farming has been tried to use earthen pond in zone II of the reclaimed tidal lowland areas with a different degree of success. The objective of this study was to investigate the soil and water quality correlation as an initial point in interpreting the pond quality in tidal lowlands. Dried bottom soil and water samples were collected from 30 ponds in dry season at temperature ±29°C and measured in situ and ex-situ. The results indicated that both soil and water were in poor condition. Soil pH averaged 3.50-5.86, while water pH averaged 3.9-6.8. There was a weak correlation between pH soil and water as 0.364. There was no correlation between soil pH with the low of total alkalinity and hardness. The soil had a lack of cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+), a high percentage of organic carbon (3.91±0.19%) and iron (84.49±8.54 mg/Kg). Location of a pond in tidal lowland which contains of pyrite generated the high of iron oxide and caused acidity in either soil and water. Soil amelioration and management must be considered appropriately in order to increase the pond productivity.

Catch data, catch composition and fishing boat information were collected from 281 bottom trawlers and 70 fish carrier boats in Myeik Township, Tanintharyi Region, Myanmar in 2017. Meanwhile 50 fishermen were interviewed for data regarding trash fish price and its distribution. Trash fish statistics were also gathered from Myanmar’s Department of Fisheries of Myeik Township, Tanintharyi Region. Information on trash fish utilization for fishmeal production was also gathered by interviewing four fishmeal factory managers in Myeik Township. In addition, other related information on Myanmar fisheries was reviewed. All information was used to describe the status of trash fish from the bottom trawl fishery and its utilization. Moreover, some management aspects were discussed. From the surveys, a catch composition of 39.16% trash fish, 60.34% marketable fish and 0.50% shrimp was found at the landing site. Information from fishermen showed that all bottom trawlers sold 100% of trash fish to local fishmeal plants, and trawlers provided 55% to 70% of the total trash fish for fishmeal production. Fishmeal produced during 2013 to 2017 was exported as follows: 42.06% to Thailand and 10.67% to Malaysia. Of the remainder, 43.76% was sold in Yangon for aquaculture and animal feed and 3.51% was sold to local animal farms. The data showed that trash fish are among the targeted species of the bottom trawl fishery in Myanmar. Although Department of Fisheries of Myanmar has implemented many measures to control overfishing and to conserve juvenile fishes, fishing for trash fish has not been reduced significantly, because price and demand incentives are high. This situation has led to an increase of new fishing boats in this region. To conserve juvenile fishes of economically important species from trawl fisheries in this area, alternative management approaches are needed.

The land use within the watershed of the Bangpakong estuary has been continually changed by increasing industrialization and urbanization. Remarkable alteration in water quality has been recorded simultaneously with the changes of land use. Therefore, land use and basin development planning must take into account the issue of water quality alteration since water is a fundamental resource for all activities of an organism. Typically, water quality monitoring relies on field-based measurement, which is time consuming and costly. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a model for the assessment of the association of land use and water quality in Bangpakong estuary. Data regarding land use and water quality parameters were collected from May 2013 to April 2014. The correlation between land use and these parameters was investigated, and then the water quality variables that presented a significant relationship with land use were used to produce linear regression models. Our results clearly indicated that there were eleven water quality variables that were suitable for use in linear regression models. All parameters explicated conformity with regression conditions and all had a level of accuracy higher than 50 percent. The models demonstrated that the expansion of urbanization and the reduction of aquaculture and mangrove forest could result in an increase in total ammonia, nitrogen and orthophosphate, while the development of industrialized areas could result in a decrease in pH. It is obvious that land used increasingly for urbanization and industrialization can lead to the deterioration of water quality in the Bangpakong estuary.
