This paper examines the effect of foreign ownership on gender-related employment outcomes and work practices in Japan. The data indicate that the proportion of females among workers, managers, directors and board members is higher in foreign affiliates than in domestic firms of comparable size operating in the same industry. Foreign affiliates are also more likely to offer flexible working arrangements, telecommuting and childcare subsidies as well as employ foreign workers. These effects are visible almost exclusively in older affiliates. The analysis of foreign acquisitions combining propensity score matching with a difference in differences suggests that increase in the female labour share takes place a few years after the ownership change. All these patterns are in line with the view that it takes time to transplant corporate culture to an overseas affiliate.

We explore intra-metropolitan spatial patterns of female labor force participation, and examine how they relate to commute times in Tokyo. The spatial patterns differ markedly by marital status and the presence of children. For married mothers, the spatial clusters of low participation and regular employment rates are largely located in the inner suburbs, many of which overlap with the spatial clusters of long male commute times. The spatial regression results indicate that for married mothers, a longer commute time is significantly associated with lower participation and regular employment rates, while for unmarried and childless married women, these associations are mostly nonsignificant. Among married mothers, the magnitude of the negative associations is greater for college graduates than for those with a high school education or less, suggesting that highly educated mothers are especially sensitive to commute times. We argue that the spatial transportation constraint intensifies the household division of labor, resulting in unique patterns for married mothers.

This study uses cross-sectional data to investigate regional differences in women's participation in the labor market. Women's participation is high in the northern coastal region of Japan. This high rate of participation is caused by the fact that married women with children participate as regular full-time employees. Supply and demand factors explain part of the differences, but regional effects remain even after controlling for them. I attribute the high participation in the northern coastal region to long-standing norms regarding women's work. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Abe, Yukiko-A cohort analysis of male labor supply in Japan This study uses repeated cross-sectional data from 1982 to 2007 to understand labor force behavior of men in Japan, focusing on the increase in non-regular employment. I find that regular employment fell significantly for recent cohorts of less-educated men. Regular employment of single men and less-educated married men responded more to the business cycle than did regular employment of highly educated married men. Cohorts who finished their schooling in the late 1990s and early 2000s experienced a severe decline in regular employment at young ages, although this phenomenon was mainly observed among single men and not among married men. In this paper, I build a model of family labor supply and residential choices that explicitly incorporates the full-time or part-time work decisions of married women. The model can explain why women's participation patterns in full-time and part-time work vary significantly in areas that are geographically close but differ in real estate prices. The model suggests that high commuting costs could be one of the main obstacles for women's full-time employment in places like the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. This study uses repeated cross-sectional data to investigate the impact of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law (EEOL) for men and women enacted in 1986 on labor force behavior of women. I find that regular employment among women, examined separately by education and marital status, did not increase after the enactment of the EEOL. Cohorts of women who graduated from university after the EEOL married later or were less likely to marry than previous cohorts. J. Japanese Int. Economies 25 (1)(2011) 39-55. In this article, I perform a cohort-based analysis of the female-to-male wage gap using aggregate data in Japan from 1975 to 2005. While the inter-cohort closing in the gender wage gap is apparent, the convergence is smaller when the gap is calculated for each level of education. This pattern suggests that a certain portion of the gender wage convergence is due to changes in the educational composition of the workforce. I find that educational composition changes played a larger role in closing the pay gap for younger cohorts than it did for older cohorts. Highly educated women who entered the labor market after the enactment of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law gained in that they had more regular full-time employment but did not experience wage gains relative to their male counterparts. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. We investigate regional patterns in employment of less-educated men in Japan from 1990 to 2007. The employment population ratio of junior high school graduate men (9 years of compulsory schooling) decreased from 1990 to 2007. Wage growth across regions had a unique pattern during this period: it was high in the low-wage regions in the 1990s but high in the high-wage regions in the 2000s. We use these regional variations in wage growth to identify the labor supply elasticity of less-educated men. The estimated elasticity of the employment-to-population ratio of junior high school graduate men is around 0.15. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper I examine the effects of a means-tested transfer system in Japan ("1.03 million yen ceiling") in a dynamic labor supply model with endogenous retirement. In Japan, married women have reason to limit their annual earnings to no more than 1.03 million yen in order to receive a number of benefits available to low-income wives, and in fact often choose to do so. In a dynamic model, the optimal labor supply schedule follows a pattern that is not seen in a static framework, which I call the "spillover effect." The paper also examines the properties of dynamic welfare cost of this ceiling. (JEL J22, H24, H55).

This paper examines whether financial incentives imposed on health insurers are effective or not in containing the health care expenditures of seniors. Under the Japanese health care system, the degree of financial incentives to restrain the health care expenditures of seniors varied significantly among almost 5300 insurers. The extent to which the strength of financial incentives is related to the actual health care expenditures is analyzed. The results indicate that financial incentives do not appear to restrain expenditures significantly. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, I examine the relationship between university selectivity and job market performance using a panel data set of Japanese 4-year universities. The data set is unique in that, for each university-department-year pair, employers where the students are placed are identified. I relate this information to university selectivity and other school inputs. The results show that, although university selectivity is significantly related to labor market performance in cross-section, it is only weakly correlated when the university-department fixed effects are controlled for. Similar results are obtained in the IV regressions that control for measurement error in the selectivity variable. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V All rights reserved.

This paper discusses three issues in estimating wage regressions by using the aggregated data from the Japanese Basic Survey of Wage Structure (BSWS). The issues include: (1) the order of taking averages and logs, (2) the usage of differently aggregated tables in the BSWS, (3) the treatment of the bonus variable for workers who have just joined a firm. To address them, I present regression results from the US Current Population Survey (CPS). I find that using differently aggregated tables sometimes affects the estimates significantly. I also present the results from wage regressions from the differently aggregated BSWS data.
