English, Scientific journal, Respiratory disease in calves is one of the most prominent diseases affecting their growth. The early and accurate detection of calf disease on the farm brings proper growth of calves. The objective of this study was to compare the daily and hourly behavioral time of diseased calves with the other calves in same pen (pen-mates) for 7 days prior to the diagnosis day. The calves (from 14 to 20 heads) were reared in a group. Day 0 was defined as the day of diagnosis. The number of diseased calves was 30 in the present experiment. The lying and eating behavior of calves were observed at 10-min intervals. The diseased calves have significantly (P < 0.01) shorter eating times than the pen-mates on the diagnosis day. The longest hourly time of the eating was in the period between 08:00 and 09:00, and shortest lying time was in the period between 09:00 and 10:00. Diseased calves had significantly (P < 0.05) longer daily lying time and shorter daily eating time than the pen-mates almost for the 7 days prior to the diagnosis day. Even though the daily behavioral time was different, the difference of behavioral time in successive hour periods was limited.

Animal science journal = Nihon chikusan Gakkaiho, 94, 1, e13830, 2023, [Peer-reviewed], [Lead author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, To assess the usefulness of a commercially available indoor positioning system for monitoring the resting time and moving distance in group-housed dairy calves as indicators of their health status, five dairy calves were housed in a free barn, and their coordinate was recorded. The mean displacement (cm/s) within a minute showed a double-mixture distribution. Actual observations revealed that the minutes in the first distribution with shorter displacement were mostly the time that the calves spent lying. To predict the daily lying time and moving distance, a mixed distribution was divided at a threshold value. The mean sensitivity (the proportion of total minutes predicted correctly as lying, in total minutes observed lying) was more than 92%. The daily fluctuation in lying time correlated well with the actual lying time (r = 0.758, p < 0.01). The range of fluctuations was 740-1308 min/day and 724-1269 m/day for daily lying time and moving distance, respectively. The rectal temperature was correlated with daily lying time (r = 0.441, p < 0.001) and distance moved (r = 0.483, p < 0.001). The indoor positioning system can be a useful tool for early illness detection in calves before the onset of symptoms in group-housing systems.

English, Scientific journal, A severe negative energy balance and high circulating free fatty acids (FFA) in postpartum cows impair fertility. The lipotoxicity of FFA has been shown to decrease the quality of bovine oocytes in vitro. Therefore, excess FFA in cells is converted to triacylglycerol (TAG), a non-toxic form, to avoid lipotoxicity. We recently reported that the TAG content in oocytes was higher in postpartum lactating cows subjected to grazing management than in heifers (Theriogenology 176: 174-182, 2021). The present study investigated the compositions of the energy metabolism-related lipids, FFA and TAG, in the plasma and oocytes of cows at different lactation stages under indoor intensive feeding management in order to obtain insights into lipotoxicity in oocytes, particularly those in early postpartum cows. Blood and oocytes were collected from 20 lactating cows categorized into the following lactation groups: 20-30 days in milk (DIM) (n = 5), 40-50 DIM (n = 5), 60-80 DIM (n = 5), and 130-160 DIM (n = 5). Daily energy balance data were obtained for 3 weeks prior to oocyte collection using the ovum pick up (OPU) method. The contents and compositions of FFA and TAG in plasma and oocytes were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. As expected, plasma FFA was high at 20-30 DIM, decreased by 50 DIM, and was maintained at a low level for the remainder of the experimental period. Similar changes were observed in oocyte FFA and TAG with DIM as plasma FFA. Oocyte FFA positively correlated with plasma FFA (P < 0.05), but negatively correlated with the mean energy balance 1 and 21 days before OPU (P < 0.05). Relationships were noted between the composition and content of FFA in plasma and oocytes, with the FFA 16:1/16:0 and 18:1/18:0 ratios positively correlating with the total amount of FFA (P < 0.05). Elevated oocyte FFA in cows in the early postpartum period under intensive feeding management suggested that oocytes were at a high risk of FFA lipotoxicity. Furthermore, the present results implied that the severe negative energy balance in the previous few weeks was closely related to increases in oocyte FFA, which supports the importance of long-term cow feeding management for preserving the quality of oocytes in the early postpartum period. The present results provide insights into the effects of high circulating FFA on the fertility of postpartum cows.
  • Dietary raffinose ameliorates hepatic lipid accumulation induced by cholic acid via modulation of enterohepatic bile acid circulation in rats.

    The British journal of nutrition, 127, 11, 1621, 1630, 14 Jun. 2022, [Peer-reviewed], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, Enterohepatic circulation of 12α-hydroxylated (12αOH) bile acid (BA) is enhanced depending on the energy intake in high-fat diet-fed rats. Such BA metabolism can be reproduced using a diet supplemented with cholic acid (CA), which also induces simple steatosis, without inflammation and fibrosis, accompanied by some other symptoms that are frequently observed in the condition of non-alcoholic fatty liver in rats. We investigated whether supplementation of the diet with raffinose (Raf) improves hepatic lipid accumulation induced by the CA-fed condition in rats. After acclimation to the AIN-93-based control diet, male Wistar rats were fed diets supplemented with a combination of Raf (30 g/kg diet) and/or CA (0·5 g/kg diet) for 4 weeks. Dietary Raf normalised hepatic TAG levels (two-way ANOVA P < 0·001 for CA, P = 0·02 for Raf and P = 0·004 for interaction) in the CA-supplemented diet-fed rats. Dietary Raf supplementation reduced hepatic 12αOH BA concentration (two-way ANOVA P < 0·001 for CA, P = 0·003 for Raf and P = 0·03 for interaction). The concentration of 12αOH BA was reduced in the aortic and portal plasma. Raf supplementation increased acetic acid concentration in the caecal contents (two-way ANOVA P = 0·001 as a main effect). Multiple regression analysis revealed that concentrations of aortic 12αOH BA and caecal acetic acid could serve as predictors of hepatic TAG concentration (R2 = 0·55, P < 0·001). However, Raf did not decrease the secondary 12αOH BA concentration in the caecal contents as well as the transaminase activity in the CA diet-fed rats. These results imply that dietary Raf normalises hepatic lipid accumulation via suppression of enterohepatic 12αOH BA circulation.

Animal science journal = Nihon chikusan Gakkaiho, 92, 1, e13590, Dec. 2021, [Peer-reviewed], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, Six ruminal-cannulated nonlactating Holstein Friesian cows (mean body weight:660 ± 42.9 kg) were used to investigate the effect of soybean meal (SBM) supplementation on voluntary rice straw (RS) intake, feed particle size reduction, and passage kinetics in the rumen. They were allocated to two dietary treatments: RS alone or RS supplemented with SBM. Voluntary dry matter intake of RS and total tract fiber digestibility was increased by SBM supplementation (p < 0.05). Supplementation with SBM decreased rumination time per dietary dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDFom) intake (p < 0.01). Particle size distribution in the rumen and total ruminal NDFom digesta weights were not affected by SBM supplementation. However, the disappearance rates of total digesta and large and small particles from the rumen were increased by SBM supplementation (p < 0.01). Moreover, SBM supplementation increased the rate of size reduction in ruminal particles (p < 0.05). In situ disappearance of DM and NDFom of RS in the rumen was greater in SBM-supplemented cows than in nonsupplemented cows (p < 0.05). This study clearly showed that increased ruminal RS particle size reduction, passage, and fermentation due to SBM supplementation accelerated the RS particle clearance from the rumen and resulted in increased voluntary RS intake of dairy cows.

Animal science journal = Nihon chikusan Gakkaiho, 92, 1, e13570, Jan. 2021, [Peer-reviewed], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, In this study, we investigated the regional differences in the composition of farm bulk milk produced at three different dairy areas in Hokkaido, Japan. A field survey was conducted at Central, Tokachi, and North areas of Hokkaido, three or four times a year. At each farm, an interview questionnaire for farm basal data was conducted, and 500 ml of bulk tank milk sample was obtained. Fatty acid composition, and vitamin and carotenoid concentrations in the milk samples were determined. In Central and Tokachi areas, corn silage was used as the main forage. In North area, fresh herbage was the dominant feed in the summer season, and grass hay was the main feed in the winter season. Discriminant analysis revealed that the composition of milk samples differed among the areas and seasons. Milk from Central and Tokachi areas contained a higher ratio of linoleic acid compared with that from North area, but there were only slight differences in the composition of milk between Central and Tokachi areas. The concentrations of carotenoids and α-tocopherol were higher in samples from North area and the ratios of trans-vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid were higher in the summer season than in the indoor season.

Animal science journal = Nihon chikusan Gakkaiho, 92, 1, e13639, 2021, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, The present study investigated the effects of adaptation to grazing in early spring on the herbage intake, milk production, and body weight changes in lactating dairy cows. The experiment included 12 Holstein lactating cows during early spring. Six cows were allowed to gradually adapt to grazing (ADP) over 10 days. They were allowed to graze on a pasture for 4 h during the first week and for 19 h during the remaining 3 days (adaptation period). During the 10-day period, the remaining six cows were housed in a barn (CON). Cows in both groups received adequate silage, hay, and concentrate during the adaptation period. Subsequently, cows in both groups were allowed to graze together for 19 h for 4 weeks (experimental period). No cow received supplements during the experimental period. In the first week of the experimental period, the ADP cows showed a higher herbage intake than the CON cows. During the subsequent weeks, there were no differences in herbage intake between the two groups. At the start of the experimental period, milk production and body weight of the ADP cows were higher than those of the CON cows, and this difference lasted until the end of the experiment.

Animal science journal = Nihon chikusan Gakkaiho, 91, 1, e13481, Jan. 2020, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, This study investigated the effect of adaptation to grazing in early spring on herbage intake, ruminal fermentation parameters, blood metabolite concentrations, and body weight change in dairy cows. The experiment was conducted on eight rumen-cannulated non-lactating cows in the early spring period. Four cows were adapted to grazing by stocking for 4 hr for 1 week (ADP group). The other cows were kept in a barn during the period (CON group). Then, both groups of cows were stocked together throughout a day on a 1 ha pasture for 3 weeks (experimental period). In the first week of the experimental period, compared to the CON group, the ADP group had a higher herbage intake, ruminal NH3 -N and total VFA concentration, and blood urea concentration, but the NEFA concentration was lower in the ADP group (p < .01). During the subsequent weeks, there were little differences in ruminal fermentation parameters and blood metabolites. Cows in the ADP group maintained their body weight, but cows in the CON group lost 60 kg of body weight in the first week of the experimental period.
  • Relationship between the timing of the first postpartum ovulation and antral follicle counts in Holstein cows
    Furukawa E, Masaki T, Sakaguchi K, Bo M, Yanagawa Y, Ueda K, Nagano M
    Journal of Ovarian Research, 13, 1, 7, 7, Jan. 2020, [Peer-reviewed], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, BACKGROUND: The timing of the first postpartum ovulation is an important factor affecting the timing of estrous resumption in dairy cows. The first postpartum ovulation is delayed in cows producing large amounts of milk with an intensive negative energy balance. The antral follicle count (AFC) and serum anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations are known to be indicators of the ovarian reserve, which is the number and quality of follicles left in a pair of ovaries and known as an indicator of female fertility. Cows with higher AFC have been proven to show higher pregnancy rate and shorter calving to conception intervals; however, the relationship between the timing of the first postpartum ovulation and ovarian reserve remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined the relationships between postpartum follicular dynamics, the ovarian cycle, nutritional status, and ovarian reserve. METHODS: Transrectal ultrasonography was conducted from calving to 70-120 days in milk (DIM) in 26 cows to monitor AFC, follicular dynamics and the ovarian cycle. Body weight (BW) and milk yield were used as indicators of nutritional status. RESULTS: The first postpartum ovulation was significantly later in cows with low AFC (< 25) than in those with high AFC (≥25), while changes in BW from calving to the nadir and milk production were similar in both groups. The present results also suggested that cows with low AFC and a delayed first postpartum ovulation had a shorter first ovarian cycle after the first postpartum ovulation. The mean DIM of the first postpartum artificial insemination (AI) and days open (days from calving to AI with which pregnancy was achieved) were similar in high and low AFC groups. CONCLUSIONS: The first postpartum ovulation was significantly earlier in cows with high AFC than in those with low AFC. The assumed reason for this result was higher sensitivity to luteinizing hormone and larger androstenedione and estradiol production in follicles in high AFC cows. Therefore, cows with high AFC may be more fertile than those with low AFC while their milk production increase and BW decrease; it means they are in negative energy balance. (340/350 words).

English, Scientific journal, Under rotational grazing by dairy cows, effect of stocking rate on soil animal, soil microorganism, inorganic nitrogen contents in soil, herbage production and nitrogen intake were evaluated using five perennial ryegrassdominant pastures. Each pasture was grazed at once every fifteen days from early July to early October. The stocking rate of each pasture was 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50cow-hr/ha/day, respectively. In stocking rate 10-40 cow-hr/ha/day, the number of soil animals and herbage regrowth tended to increase with increasing the stocking rate, and consequently, herbage production and nitrogen intake increased, although soil microorganisms and inorganic nitrogen contents in soil had little differences. However, in stocking rate 50cow-hr/ha/day, herbage production and nitrogen intake were lower than in stocking rate 40cow-hr/ha/day, because herbage regrowth was lower than stocking rate 40 cow-hr/ha/day, and the number of soil animals and inorganic nitrogen contents in soil were the lowest in all stocking rate-treatment.

Japanese, Scientific journal, Under set stocking (S) and rotational grazing (R) by lactating dairy cows, effects of these grazing systems on sward structure, herbage production and utilization were examined at the same stocking rate. Two paddocks of 0.83 ha of grass-clover mixed pasture were assigned two treatments. Two different groups of each 5 lactating dairy cows were grazed on each pasture. Mean sward height during the grazing period was lower in S than R (P<0.05). Grass leaf mass in S was higher than that of post-grazing in R (P<0.05), whereas daily herbage regrowth did not differ between the treatments. The amount of dead material in S was higher than that of pre-grazing in R (P<0.05), and nutritive value of herbage in S decreased in summer. Daily herbage DM intake per cow in S tended to be higher than R in May and June due to large amount of herbage allowance, and consequently total herbage utilization during the grazing period in S was higher than R (11.2 vs. 7.0t DM/ha). Herbage utilization during the grazing period under set stocking would be no less than that of rotational grazing, although the amount of dead materials increased and nutritive value tended to decrease in set stocking through summer.

    Nihon Chikusan Gakkaiho, 78, 4, 427, 433, Japanese Society of Animal Science, 25 Nov. 2007, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, Scientific journal, The relationship between rumen fill and eating and rumination activity was evaluated using four rumencannulated sheep offered alfalfa hay (ALF) or grass hay (GR) twice a day. Ruminal digesta samplings were obtained before feeding (0 h), immediately after the first meal (FM), and at 4 and 8 h after feeding. The particle size distribution of rumen digesta was determined (LP : >5.60 mm ; MP : 5.60-1.18 mm ; SP : 1.18-0.30 mm ; FP : 0.30-0.047 mm ; and SOL : <0.047 mm). Although dry matter (DM) intake of the first meal was not different between ALF and GR, total DM intake for ALF was significantly higher than that for GR (P<0.05). Total eating time did not differ between the diets ; however, the number of meals for ALF was significantly greater than that for GR (P<0.05). Total rumination time and the duration of the rumination period for GR were significantly longer than for ALF (P<0.05). Therefore, the length of rumination time per kg of DM intake for ALF was significantly shorter than that for GR (P<0.05). The amount of ruminal DM contents at FM was quite similar in the two diets. The percentage of LP sharply increased at FM in GR. The change of the pool size of large particles consisting of LP and MP after feeding was similar in both diets. It was concluded that the amount of digesta in rumen signaled the end of first meal.

Japanese, Under rotational grazing by dairy cows, effect of stocking rate on soil animal, soil microorganism, inorganic nitrogen contents in soil, herbage production and nitrogen intake were evaluated using five perennial ryegrassdominant pastures.

Japanese, Scientific journal, To evaluate for an effect of grazing on a health in dairy cattle, the veterinary records from Agricultural Cooperation were analyzed with milk production records and feeding styles with or without grazing for each dairy farms at northern area in Hokkaido, Japan. The veterinary records and milk production performance for each farm were from Research Center of Agriculture and Science in this area. Number of cattle kept, area of grassland, grazing or zero-grazing were surveyed by a postal questionnaire method for all dairy farms, about 100, in this area. Forty-six questionnaires had been obtained. In these farms, means of milk yield, number of milking cows, area of grazing pastures and number of medical treatments by veterinarians were 8,127.2 kg/305d, 71.7 cows, 8.6 ha and 1.2 time/year, respectively. The number of medical treatments by veterinarians/cow/year were positively related to the milk yield /cow/305d. (P<0.05) and negatively related to the area of grassland/farm (P<0.05). From this 46,32 farms were picked up for further analysis. Grazing were used in 24 farms, in which 7 farms were of all-day-grazing except milking time (group G), 17 were grazed their cattle during day time (group TG). Remained 9 had kept their animals in their cow-shed for a whole day (group B). There was no statistical difference of milk yield/cow among groups. The number of medical treatments (/cow/year) for milk organs by veterinarians was a little high in the group G and treatment frequencies for a foot and hoof were relatively low in groups G and B, though those differences among groups were not significant. Frequency of veterinary treatments (/cow/year) for conception, calving and reproductive organs was lower in group G (0.22) than groups TG (0.41) and B (0.42) significantly (P<0.05).

English, Scientific journal, The maternal plasma hormone and metabolites concentration, blood flow and net nutrient uptake by gravid uterus with different litter size were observed using 10 Saanen goats under maternal malnutrition. Surgery was done under general anesthesia at 105 days of pregnancy. The ultrasonic flow probe was surgically fitted around the uterine artery. Heparinized catheters were inserted into the uterine vein and carotid artery. Uterine blood flow was measured continuously for 24 h at 1 min interval and blood samples were collected every 3 h at an average of 119.0 (single, n=4), 113.5 (twin, n=4) and 121.5 (triplet, n=2) days of pregnancy. As percentage of requirement (maintenance+pregnancy), metabolizable energy intake was 56.4% (single), 59.4% (twin) and 71.4% (triplet). Retention energy in the triplet pregnant goats were lowest because the heat production was significantly (P<0.01) greater than in the single or twin pregnant goats. Plasma flow rate in the uterine artery, net glucose uptake by the gravid uterus, plasma glucose and urea nitrogen concentrations in the triplet pregnant goats were higher than in the single or twin pregnant goats. There were no clear differences in plasma free fatty acid concentration among each litter size. Molar ratio of plasma insulin and glucagon tended to be lower in the triplet pregnant goats. Our results suggest that the triplet pregnant goats could adapt to the energy deficit by increased secretion of glucagon to maintain glucose supply for fetuses. And furthermore, results showed that the techniques used in the present experiment would contribute to an accurate determination of nutrient uptake by gravid uterine tissues in ruminants.

    Animal Science Journal, 72, 4, 306, 314, Japanese Society of Animal Science, 2001, [Peer-reviewed]
English, Scientific journal, This study attempted to develop a method for quantifying dynamics of particulate matter in the rumen of sheep fed on alfalfa hay at hourly intervals. The four compartments model for four size particulate fractions (large particle (LP):>5, 600, medium particle (MP): 5, 600-1, 180, small particle(SP): 1, 180-300, fine particle (FP): 300-47μm) in the rumen that has multiple pathways of size reduction, fermentation and passage was assumed. The respective rate constants were estimated by applying the in situ method and rare earth markers technique to each ruminal particulate fractions. The fermentation rate of each particulate fraction could be estimated from in situ disappearance curves. The rate of disappearance and the rate of size reduction of multiple pathways were able to be estimated by non-linear regression fitting to the theoretical equations from the dynamics model. The extent of fitting of the changes of markers in particulate fractions to the functions was enough to estimate the rate of disappearance and size reduction of ruminal particulate fractions. The rates of size reduction were 1.55 (LP→MP), 1.06 (LP→SP), 1.94 (LP→FF), 1.76 (MP→SP), 0.46 (MP→FP) and O.84%/h (SP→FP). The rates of fermentation were 1.47 (LP), 0.90 (MP), 0.08 (SP) and 1.19%/h (FP). The rates of passage were 1.82 (SP) and 3.94%/h (FP).

Japanese, Scientific journal, Two experiments were carried out to study the effects of characteristics of feed and animal condition on voluntary intake. The voluntary feed intake was measured as dry matter intake (DMI) with four dairy cows fed rapping roll-bale Silage of four Italian ryegrass (IRGS) ad libitum. The digestibility of dry matter (DM) and organic cell wall (OCW), and the rate of degradation of OCW in the rumen of the IRGS were determined using in vitro method. Mean of DMI per day and DMI per metabolic body weight of four IRGS ranged from 6.3 to 9.4 kg/day, from 54.2 to 79.8 g/kg^<0.75>, respectively. The DMI per day of IRGS in dairy cows was highly correlated with OCW, low digestible fraction of OCW (organic b fraction : Ob), sum of organic cellular contents (OCC) and high digestible fraction of OCW (organic a fraction : Oa) (OCC+Oa), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL). The DMI per day can be predicted from the following equations; DMI =-0.257×OCW +23.69 (r=0.987), DMI=-0.162×Ob+16.34 (r=0.995), DMI= 0.214×(OCC+0a)-0.34 (r= 0.995), DMI =-0.258×NDF+23.35 (r=0.996), DMI =-1.047×ADL+13.96 (r=1.000). In addition, the DMI per day of IRGS in dairy cows was highly corrlated with retention time in the rumen, digestibility of each chemical compositions and the rate of degradation of fiber in the rumen. Similar values were observed in DMI per metabolic body weight. From those results, it was cleared that each factor examined in this study affets on voluntary feed intake.

English, Scientific journal, The changes in particle size distribution of ingested boli, rumen digesta and feces were investigated with four rumen cannulated sheep receiving 3 varieties of orchardgrass hay (H1, H2 and H3) once a day. The hay was harvested at three stages of maturity: pre-heading; a 1:1 heading to blooming ratio; and a 1:1 blooming to fruiting ratio for H1, H2, and H3, respectively. The digestion coefficients and voluntary intake for hay decreased with advancing stage of maturity. The sheep were fed 1300g of the unchopped hay for 3h a day and represent-ative samples of total rumen digesta were collected at 3, 7, 11, 15, 19 and 24h after feeding. The particle size distribution of every sample was determined by the wet-sieving technique and expressed as the dry matter proportion of large particles (LP, retained on 5600, 2360 and 1180μm sieves), small particles (SP, passed through a 1180μm sieve and retained on 47μm sieves) and soluble fraction (SOL, passed through a 47μm sieve) to total sample dry matter. The percentage of LP in the ingested boli was higher for H1 than for H2 or H3. The percentage of the boli-particles retained on a 5600μm sieve was prominently higher for H1, as compared to that for the other hay varieties. The percentage of LP in the rumen digesta decreased from 46% at 3h after feeding to 13% at 24h for H1, 39 to 14% for H2 and 34 to 8% for H3, respectively. However, the percentage of ruminal LP at each sampling time tended to be higher for H1 than for H2 and H3, although the difference was not so marked. The percentage of SP increased from 28% at 3h after feeding to 47% at 24h for H1, 35 to 62% for H2 and 47 to 68% for H3, respectively. The percentage of ruminal SP was higher (P<0.05) for H2 and H3 than for H1 at every sampling time. The percentage of SOL in the rumen digesta tended to increase with time after feeding (from 26% at 3h to 41% at 24h) for H1, whereas it showed no change with time and accounted for about 25% of total digesta for H2 and H3. The percentages of LP in feces were very low for the three hay varieties. The percentage of SP in feces for H3 was higher (P<0.05) than for either H1 or H2, and inversely. SOL was lower (P<0.05) for H3 than for the other hay varieties.

Oocyte triacylglycerols (TAG) were significantly higher in cows in the early lactation stage than in heifers. Plasma free fatty acids (FFA) were high at 20-30 after days in milk (DIM). Oocyte FFA positively correlated with plasma FFA, but negatively correlated with the mean energy balance and 21 days before oocyte collection. Elevated oocyte FFA in cows in the early ostpartum period under intensive feeding management suggested that oocytes were at a high risk of FFA lipotoxicity.
In addition, the effects modulated (5-20%) oxygen environments on the in vitro development of bovine oocyte-cumulus-granulosa cell complexes (OCGCs) cultured in the presence or absence of an antioxidant (astaxanthin: Ax) were evaluated by using gas permeable culture wells. The presence of Ax in the 5-20% O2 condition promoted oocyte nuclear maturation and development of OCGCS.

We tried to determine the moving locus of grazing cows by high resolution network cameras installed in pasture, which recorded the behavior of cows, the digital images were transmitted to a host personal computer by wireless LAN, and automatic image processing was made. As the result of trial and error, it was suggested to be possible to identify the place of cows grazed, depending on the conditions of cameras installed in pasture. Although the possibility of such a system configuration was recognized, the number of camera, and the improvement in accuracy of picture integrated processing with the host computer was remained as a future subject.

Various crops such as paddy rice, field crops, forage crops, and pasture grass were observed with the aerial laser scanner (ALS), concurrently with the investigation of the growth of these crops on the ground. The ALS data obtained and the results of the investigation were analyzed to estimate the heights of the crops adn crop canopy structures. From the relationships between the measured heights and the ALS-based mean height values for seven types of crops, it was shown that the measured heights of crops with vertically growing thin leaves, such as paddy rice, were different from those of crops with horizontally growing leaves, such as corn. This is because of the fact that the entry depth of the laser pulse into the communities depends on the grass type of the crops. We were also able to estimate three-dimensional structure of the crop canopy by examining the spatial distribution of the laser pulses to be emitted from aircraft.
