This paper presents a newly discovered glossary (230 items) of Northern and Southern Kuril Ainu recorded by the captain Vasily Mikhaylovich Golovnin in 1811 and stored at the Russian National Archive of the Navy in St. Petersburg. Based on this new document we argue that Southern Kuril has a much closer lexical resemblance to Northeastern Hokkaido Ainu than Northern Kuril. On the other hand, we reaffirm that both Southern and Northern Kuril Ainu constitute a really separate Kuril group because they show a number of lexical, phonological and grammatical features, which are different from Hokkaido Ainu.

Japanese, It is known that Ainu has two types of compound noun constructions: the "modifying construction" and the "pseudo-modifying construction". However, the term "modifying construction" from the outset contradicts the so-called "syntactic atomicity"of words, one of the most basic principles of word formation in general linguistic terms. Here, I suggest that among the compound nouns with the modifying construction, some are compound nouns exceptional in their construction, formed, as it were, directly from phrases (i.e. "phrase-word" by Bloomfield), while others are words containing a kind of verbal noun converted from the corresponding intransitive verb, formed, in turn, through "object-incorporation". This assumption is supported by the fact that the number of compound nouns with the modifying construction is not so large in the lexicon as a whole (so, exceptional and marginal)and also supported by the fact that examples of the compound nouns with the modifying constituent "subject＋transitive verb" are extremely few: the pattern "subject＋transitive verb"is usually not possible as an intransitive verb with noun incorporation in Ainu, and therefore cannot be used as a verbal noun of the first member of a compound noun.

Japanese, It is known that Ainu has two reflexive prefixes yay- and si-. The difference between these prefixes has been said to be the following: yay- is intentional , while si- is unintentional. However, there are a number of cases that this explanation does not work well, since si- may be used to express various activities that are clearly intentional. In this article, I try to explain the difference systematically in terms of the notions of "direct reflexive" and "indirect reflexive." In the direct reflexive (yay-), the coreferential subject participates in the activity directly, while in the indirect reflexive (si-), it participates in the activity only indirectly either in the sense that the subject "does" the activity only with the help of some other person or in the sense that the subject is related to the activity merely locationally.萱野茂博士追悼特集

The Study of the Ainu Language

The purpose of this short essay is to introduce to the readers the general knowledge about the Ainu people and their language, as well as to stress the urgency of the linguistic and cultural study. In addition,as a case study,I discuss the problem of 'glide insertion' ;in Ainu in some detail. In previous studies the glides in question have been supposed to be perfectly predictable from the phonological environment. Therefore, they have often been ignored in phonological notation. However, I argue that there are a number of cases in which these glides do not happen in spite of the same environment. In short, the appearance of the glides is not only controlled by the phonological environment, but also depends strongly on the morphological properties of the preceding elements. The glides serve to make a given word-structure more transparent. This claim is supported by a number of facts. First, the phenomenon (the occurrence or non-occurrence of the glides) can be seen clearly in the soundspectrograms of the forms in question. The claim is also supported by studying Ainu texts written by an Ainu native speaker him/herself. In fact, we can find that the glides in question are almost always clearly written, for example, in Yukie Chiri's famous Ainu text Ainu shinyoshu (a collection of Ainu epics of gods). Moreover, there is morpho-syntactic evidence as well as phonological for the significance of these glides. We should predict that the non-occurrence of the glides indicates the independent nature of the preceding element. This is supported by the fact that nominal forms with the prefix si-'oneself',which does not trigger glide insertion,cannot always be incorporated, but may be separated from verbs (i. e. expressed syntactically) in the Horobetsu dialect of Ainu., Hokkaido University, English

本稿では、主に以下の三つの点を指摘したい。A 話し手や聞き手に言及する形式に関して言えば、アイヌ語は、いわゆるヨーロッパの諸言語で知られているような人称表示体系と、日本語にみられるような自称詞、対称詞の体系を合わせ持つ、混合型の言語である。B 親族同士の呼称に関して言えば、アイヌ語は日本語と異なり、目上と目下を分ける一本の線では体系をうまく説明できず、自己と自己より下の世代を分ける、もう一本の線を必要とする。C アイヌ語では妻が夫に言及する際、通常、敬称の形式が用いられるが、ここではAで述べたアイヌ語の混合性がはっきり現れ、性格の異なるいくつかの形式が機能を分担し合う形で混在する。, 国際日本文化研究センター, Japanese

A study of the history of the Ainu language based on the linguistic analyisis of old documents

The main results of this project are as follows: first, important notational characteristics of the major oldest Ainu documents have been shown. This study will serve to estimate the exact age of various valuable old documents of Ainu. Second, old documents of the Ainu dialects in Japan Sea coastal regions which were lost very early have been investigated. Contrary to our expectations this study shows us for the first time that these almost unknown Ainu dialects most probably have a number of features common to East Hokkaido Ainu dialects. This result is very interesting because such an "ABA" type distribution suggests that East Hokkaido Ainu dialects may keep more archaic features in light of linguistic geography than Central Ainu dialects. Third, the reports of the study of four rare valuable old documents of Ainu have been published, which include their transliterations, various indeces, and philological descriptions, which will be useful for the study of the history of Ainu.

We could get various results about the history of Ainu by examining old Ainu documents: 1) accent may be older than vowel-length distinction 2) the possibility of the *CVCC syllable structure, 3) the possibility of an unknown consonat in Proto Ainu, 4) the possibility of atleast one unknown vowel, 5) h of hu may have been pronounced as glottal, unlike the present bilabial fricative, 6) the existence of the vocabulary not known today, 7) chronological ordering of some words by linguistic geography can be supported by the study of old documents as well, 8) semantic changes may be attested by studying old documents (e.g. 'boy' → 'adult man').

現存するアイヌ語の古文献を17世紀前半、18世紀前半、18世紀後半、19世紀前半に区分し、代表的なものを分析し、各時期の特徴を明らかにした上で、400年間にわたるアイヌ語の通史について一応の見通しを与えた。概略的には、17世紀初頭の文献にみられる音韻、文法、語彙の特徴が、18世紀初頭では失われる傾向があり、18世紀後半では急激な変化が起きたということを文献を用いて実証的に明らかにした。

A Comparative Study of Ainu Dialects Based on Old Documents

We have investigated mainly an old document called "Ezoki" this year. The results of our research are as follows. First, we have made clear phonetic characteristics of the Ainu language in the eighteenth century since the current /h/ corresponds to letters representing /p/ in this material, we can assume that /h/ might come from some other phoneme. Similarly, /a/ often corresponds to letters representing /o/ and this also implies that there was a sound change. Second, we have made clear the fact that there were a rich variety of sociolinguistic variations there is evidence that the same referent was called by many different words according to the situation. Third, we have shown that this material serves to decipher difficult lines of contemporary materials of Ainu. For example, a number of difficult expressions in the famous "Ainu sin'yoshu" [an Anthology of Ainu Epics of Gods] could be interpreted correctly only by making use of this material.

環北太平洋地域における危機言語の総合的調査研究

本研究では、環北太平洋地域における「消滅の危機に瀕した言語」(危機言語)に関して、過去2年間の研究成果に基づきつつさらにそれを発展させ、総合的な観点から調査研究を行うとともに、社会的・国際的なアピールも図った。今年度における主要な研究成果は次の4点である:(1)これら危機言語について、各研究者がそれぞれの計画研究において収集したデータ(特に今年度の夏を中心とする時期のフィールドワークの成果、各研究計画の研究分担者・研究協力者の成果も含む)を提示・紹介し、言語記述の観点から検討を行った。また、このフィールドワークで得た各地域における言語及び言語動態の状況・現地における調査研究の進行状況等に関する情報を交換し、今後の研究の進展をはかった。(2)過去2年間の研究も含めて研究成果がかなり蓄積されたことを考慮して、研究報告書を中心とした出版物にそれらを反映させるために、研究者間で密接に連絡を取り合い、出版計画の検討や出版計画への助言などを行った。この活動は今年度のA02「環北太平洋班」の諸報告書に結実している。(3)2002年6月の科研全体会議(東京)にて研究代表者がA02「環北太平洋班」の研究進行状況について一般向けに講演を行った。またその後も電子メールなどを活用して各研究計画の進行状況を互いに報告し、互いに研究上の刺激を与え合うとともに、各研究計画の円滑で効率的な進行を図った。(4)2002年11月の科研全体会議においてA02「環北太平洋班」の分科会(すべてを英語で進行させて国際的なアピールも図った)を開催するにあたり、環北太平洋地域の危機言語に関する研究の現状と今後の課題について各研究計画からの発言を求め、積極的な討論を行った。
環北太平洋地域における危機言語は、系統的にみても類型論的にみても、絢爛たる多様性を示している。またそれらの現在の社会的状況も多様性に満ちている。これらの要因のために当該地域にかんする各研究計画の円滑かつ効率的な進展のためには、研究者相互の情報交換と刺激が不可欠であった。またそれら研究成果の出版も一層充実が望まれた。今年度の研究は、過去2年間の研究実績の効率的活用も含めて、これらの諸点に関し一定の成果を得た。

消滅の危機にあるアイヌ語諸方言の方言分類に関する研究

研究業績の一つは、アイヌ語学上、各方言において古くから問題となって来たわたり音の問題について、これまで各方言についてなされてきた所説を逐一検討し、さらに実地調査で得られた新しいデータを加えて、その解釈、意義について、新しい考え方を提唱したことがあげられる。なお、データの分析に際し、解釈の客観性を高めるため、サウンドスペクトログラフによる音声分折を行い、その結果を検証に用いた。その結果、少なくともいくつかのアイヌ語方言においては、問題の音は、類似の環境における単なる「わたり」に比して明白に長い持続を持ち、したがって、音声学的には、その調音のために調音器官が独立の運動をなす単音と認めるべき可能性が高いことが明らかになった。このことによって、同じ音声的環境でゼロと対立し、しかもその出現が、音声的条件ではなく、形態的な条件によって規定されていることを明らかにし、従来の記述とは異なり、問題の音を独立の音素と記述すべき点を論じた。もう一つの研究業績としては、厳密な意味で英雄叙事詩を記した最古と思われる文献について、書誌的、言語学的な分析を行い、成立年代、記録されている方言について、確証となる事実を明らかにした点があげられる。中でも刊行されたアイヌ語辞書としては世界最古とされる上原熊治郎『もしほ草』のテキストに出典があることを初めて立証した点は研究上大きな発見と言える。また、現代のアイヌ語諸方言においては極めて例外的とされている自動詞の他動詞活用がこの最古のテキストにも既にみられ、この現象が単なる誤用ではなく、動作主格的な文法カテゴリーが古くアイヌ語にもあったことを示すものではないか、という推論を述べた。

Audio Data Base and Linguistic Change of the North Pacific Languages

1. Workshops : We had two workshops every year for three years : six workshops in total. Every participant of the workshop, which contained six or seven presentations in two days, gained a better understanding of various problems of the North Pacific languages through profitable discussions. We had several guest speakers, who stimulated us from fresh viewpoints. Among them were graduate students, who were offered the chance of academic presentation for educational purposes.
2. Arrangement and Analysis of Audio Data : Each member promoted arranging, copying and analyzing the audio data collection at his/her disposal. This is a basic task for the future construction of audio data base. Some samples of audio data were supplied for the audio exhibition at the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples.
3. Presentations and Publications : Some results of our research project were presented orally at various meetings such as the General Meetings of Japan Linguistic Society, a symposium supported by JLS, an International Symposium held by the Research Project of Priority Area, and several workshops at the National Museum of Ethnology. Some of the papers have been published in journals. Our results are also found in a series of research publications Languages of the North Pacific Rim vol.4 (1999), 5 (2000), 6 (2001 ; vols.4-6 in English), and 7 (2001, in Japanese), the last volume intended as a special issue for the present project.

In Sakhalin Island and along the Amur River, which flows between Russia and China, many ethnic minorities inhabit, including Nivkh, Uilta, Nanay (Hozhen in China), Negidal, Ul'chi, etc. It has been pointed that their mother tongues and traditional cultures are in endangered situation because of the powers of major cultures such as Russian or Chinese. In 1997 we started to research the language situation of Hozhen along the Chinese side of the Amur River. And to share the recognition of the linguistic situations of those ethnic groups, we invited Russian and Japanese scholars to Chiba Univ. and held several sessions. In those sessions we exchanged the information each other on those Siberian minor languages and prepared the expeditions to be made from next year on. In 98' we went to Nikolaevsk and Mago, which are situated near the mouth of the Amur River, and researched the grammar and sociolinguistic situations of Nivkh and Negidal. In '99 we focused our research to Nivkh and collected the acoustic data of their language and the visual data of their traditional cuisine. Current economic depressions and destruction of the transportation system in Russia force them to live in a state of self-sufficiency and to live, in a sense, in a traditional life style. But the same economical problems also make them difficult to study and educate their own language. One of the purposes of our research was to collect materials useful for teaching their languages to their own children. For the purpose we also tried to make connections with several primary schools or scholars in those areas.

平成10年度も9年度に引き続き、青森、秋田、東京の所蔵機関で資料調査を行った。その結果、これまで研究がなされていない多くの江戸時代のアイヌ語資料を新たに見いだすことができた。特に、享和年間に岡儀三郎という人物によって作成された「蝦夷言」という資料は、アイヌ語彙数が多いことと年代が古い点で、特筆されるべきものである。さらに、これらの資料の言語学的な性格、資料的価値についての考察を行う過程で、年代の古いと思われる資料にはやはりアイヌ語の古い姿を示していると思われる特徴のあることが明らかとなった。すなわち、現代のアイヌ語ではアクセントの対立として記述されるべき特徴が、最古のアイヌ語文献と言われる「松前ノ言」も含めて、古い時代のアイヌ語文献では長母音であったことを示す表記のなされていることが明らかとなった。このことは、各資料をばらばらに研究していたのでは立証困難なものであり、本研究において江戸時代のアイヌ語文献を系統的に収集分類することによって初めて明らかになってきたものである。詳細は、さらに大量の資料を系統的に研究することによって補強しなければならないが、もしこのことが立証されればもう一つの重要な問題が明らかとなる。すなわち、もし古い時代のアイヌ語資料に長母音が極めて普通に確認されたとすれば、現代の諸方言に長母音の全く見られない原因は何かが問題となる。一つには勿論、言語変化が考えられるが、もう一つには近世以後の大規模なアイヌ語方言の交替、統合を仮定する必要があろう。すなわち、現在代表的なアイヌ語方言として知られている北海道西南部方言の分布は、比較的近年の拡大である可能性が出てくるのであり、この方言の出自を知る上で大きな問題を提供するものと言える。

Sakhalin Ainu, with the death of its last speaker, Mrs. Take Asai (1902-1994), has become extinct, that is to say, become a dead language.
The aim of this research is to catalog and preserve the linguistic data of sakhalin Ainu, that were collected in the past until now, to take the voice recordings, the texts there of, as well as glossaries and put their semantic content into one cohesive form such as multi-media form.
The reseat that was accomplished in the period 1996-1998 did not exceed more than are part of the above task, but with the research project which took place last year, we completed, TUYTAH COLLECTION BY ASAI TAKE I, 300 pages
We organized the phonology data taken from the recorded 30 folktales told by Mrs. Take Asai from 1984 to 1988 and published them as TUYTAH COLLECTION BY ASAI TAKE I.

A Comparative Study on Circumpolar Cultures-Language, Ecology and Worldview

The languages, ecologies, and worldviews of circumpolar cultures which extend from Northern Eurasia through Japan to North America were examined from a comparative viewpoint to clarify cultural dynamics - how traditional cultures have changed and remained the same through time. Each investigator seperately studied either the Ainu, Northern Athapaskan, Koryak, Even, Yakut, Chukchi, Inuit and Mongols.
In 1995, an international symposium on "Animism and Shamanism in the North" was held at Hokkaido University, where circumpolar cultures were discussed through comparison. As a result, it was revealed that northern shamanism not only functions to clarify the relationship between nature and supernature, but also operates as a core of many cultural revitalization movements, i.e., as a dynamic institution adapting to contemporary social changes. Moreover, the academic terms of animism and shamanism were re-examined and newly defined in an anthropological framework. In 1996, further research was conducted on each circumpolar culture. In 1997, the results were published in a book, "Circumpolar Animism and Shamanism" (Hokkaido University Press).
Thus, the original purpose of the research, to clarify contemporary cultural dynamics of northern cultures, was achieved through interdisciplinary comparative research on the languages, ecologies, and worldviews of circumpolar cultures.

江戸時代の古文献に現れたアイヌ語方言の研究

調査の結果、北海道大学が所蔵しているものだけでも、江戸時代のアイヌ語文献は膨大な量にのぼることがわかった。中でも、「加賀屋文書」は約千ページ分にも相当し、資料の少ない道東地方のアイヌ語を復元する上で貴重な資料となるものであることが明らかとなった。特に、根室、別海等の地方が明らかな資料を多数含んでおり、これらの地方のアイヌ語を知る上で非常に役立つものとおもわれる。なお、この資料は、寛政頃から明治初期まで、約70年にわたる記録であり、その間のアイヌ語の変遷、翻訳技術の変遷などを探る上でも非常に貴重なものであることが判明した。また、北海道立図書館等に所蔵されている文献の中にもこれまで研究されていない貴重な文献がみられ、中にはこれまでほとんど知られていない日本海沿岸地方のアイヌ語に関する情報を含むものも新たに見いだされた。また、旅行記のような、直接アイヌ語を記したのではない文献の中にも相当多数のアイヌ語が記録されていることが改めて確かめられた。これらはアイヌ語が文献の中に散在しているために調査に膨大な時間がかかり、組織的な調査は今後にまたなければならないが、アイヌ語の全体像を知る上で重要な手がかりを与えるものである見通しが得られた。なお、副次的な成果として、江戸時代に出版された世界最初のアイヌ語辞書である上原熊治郎「藻汐草」について調べたところ、道内に存在するものを調査しただけでも極論すれば一冊一冊が異なる状態を示し、特に印刷の精度に差があるために、文字の脱落の箇所や程度が一冊一冊異なっており、この辞書の正確な理解や評価は従来の一部の版本によるものでは極めて不十分であり、現存の版本を多数比較し、校訂版を作成しなければ下せないものであることが明らかとなった。資料数が膨大に上るため、未調査な文献がまだ多量にあり、今後も調査を継続する必要がある。また、既に収集した資料も膨大に上り、さらなる組織的な整理、分析が必要である。

Most of the people the Sakhalin Ainu. Uilta and Nivkh ethnic monority groups which had been thriving in Sakhalin until the Second World War pulled out after the war and relocated to Hokkaido, but now such native speakers of these languages are fading away. But at the same time, we heard that in Sakhalin in Russia there are still some examples of these ethic minorities. The objective of this project has been to organise a Japanese research team including some of the very small number of linguists the world who specialize in languages and, in concert with Russian researchers, to visit some of the native speakers of the Ainu, uilta and Nivkh language in order to collect audio materials of these three language and to calrify their respective liguistic situations.
In the summer of the first year, 1990, the linguistic situation of the ethnic minorities in question, namely the Ainu, Nivkh and Uilta language was clarified by means of field surveys carried out in Sakhalin. Namely that there are no longer any existing of Ainu, but that there are approximately 2,000 speakers of the Nivkh language, albeit that there are less than ten living exponents of their oral tradition, and also that there are about 200 speakers of the Uilta language. We thereby ascertained there is sufficient scope for linguistic surveys.
In 1992 the following research activities were carried out : August 14 to September 7, 1991. Mr. Austerlitz came to Japan from New York to carry out research on the Nivkh language. After collating and analyzing the material scollected during the previous year he checked a Nivkh textbook together with Ms. Otaina. September 1 to September 17, 1991. Ms. Otaina came to Japan from Vladivostok to carry out research on the Nivkh language. She checked a Nivkh textbook together with Mr. Austerlitz and also collated and analyzed materials. August 10 to September 15, 1991. Researchers Ikegami, Inoue, Nakagawa and Sato carried linguistic survey on the monority groups in Sakhalin such as the languages of the Uilta and Nivkh peoples. October 28 to November 9, 1991. Researchers Murasaki, Asakura and Inoue went to Yujino Sakhalinsk to attend and give presentations at the symposium commemorating the birth of Pilsudski and also to carry out surveys of the remains of Ainu kotan (villages.) October 13 to November 13, 1991. Mr. de Graaf from Groningen in Holland visited Leningrad and Novosibirsk to carry out surveys on audio materials of ethnic minorities. After that he traveled to Sakhalin and gave a presentation at the symposium. As a result, "Sakhalin and B. Pilsudski, " (March 1992 by the Organizing Committee for Pilsudski related Travel in the Northern Regions) edited by Kyoko Murasaki was published.
In the final year, 1992, the following surveys and research were carried out : July to August, 1992. A two person group led by Ikegami and Inoue carried out specific surveys on the Uilta language in Sakhalin. From September 1992 to March 1993 the materials collected were collated, analyzed and preparation was done for publication as a final research report entitled "Ethnic Minorities in Sakhalin" (284 pg.) will be published. Most of the papers included in this final research report are original works written by the researchers involved in this project and there is no doubt that these papers represent extremely valuable research achievements in this previously virtually untouched area of "linguistic research of Sakhalin. "

日本語アイヌ語二重言語話者の音声の収集と研究

(1)収録調査
現存するアイヌ出身の方々21名を対象に、平成1、2、3年度にわたり収録調査を行い、予定した調査は終了した。平成4年度には、資料整理分析の段階でさらに補充調査が必要な項目について調査を行い、同時にアイヌ語音声も可能な限り収録した。
(2)新しい資料の入手
平成3年度から新しく研究分担者として参加した田村すず子氏(早稲田大学教授)によってアイヌ語北海道方言話者の音声資料が入手できた。本研究で既に収集された資料と合わせて、音声データベース「CDアイヌのことば」(60分)として出版した。
(3)最終年度の刊行書
平成4年度までの調査によって得られた資料を、総括班の費用で、以下のように三巻、刊行した。

これまでの調査によって、アイヌ話者の日本語音声の特徴が明らかになった。これらの特徴に従って、各方言話者の音声サンプルをまとめる。
また、先にだしたCDについても、そのテキストと詳しい解説をまとめて印刷する。
