    Japanese, This paper examines the writings of Riemon UNO and his association, Kogyokyoikukai, focusing on workers' housing especially dormitories. It can be read how the third party grasped the matters relating to workers' dormitories. They introduced the "model" dormitories from the point of view of the sound development of industries in Japan. On the assumption that the primordial matters behind of the dormitory system cannot immediately be solved, "model" dormitories were as cases that should be referred to for a problem how improve them while making use of an advantage in protection and the management of the workers.

    Japanese, This paper examines the writings of Riemon UNO and his association, Kogyokyoikukai, focusing on company housing. They believed that company housing contribute to the fixing the workers. From the viewpoint of healthy development of Japanese industries, they recommended the adoption of company housing system and aimed the increasing of “commuters” in a global point. They considered the problem concerning company housing for workers as a problem not only of facility but also of the living of the workers. They had studied the whole system of materializing an ideal company housing.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, Streetcar suburbs are residential areas where the development was shaped along streetcar lines in the late 19th century in US. We have explored the image of streetcar suburbs at core cities in local area of Japan, and have examined how evaluate them in the concept of the suburbs through 10 case studies. We could categorize three types by two criteria(i.e. housing pressure caused by a population explosion, and the enforcement of town planning act). Typical streetcar suburbs in Japan had been formed at some cities with high-potential population based on not principle of urban planning but spontaneous.

  • The influence of architectural pattern books from overseas upon SUIBARA Torazo shop built in 1877 in Sapporo

    Japanese, Scientific journal, SUIBARA Torazo shop. built in 1877. has been known as the first 'Western-Style' civil architecture in Sapporo. Akihisa ENDO tried to examin this building from an old photograph and historical materials owned by the Archises of Hokkaido. I newly discoverd the general plans of this building at the Archi'es of Hokkaido and Northern Studies Collection of Hokkaido University Library. I could fine the similarity of details between this building and the buildings built by Kaitakushi or the plates of pattern books published in USA in the 19th century former owned by Kaitakushi, i.e. this building must be designed by the staves, such as Yoshiyuki ADACHI, the chief engineer, of Engineering Department of Kaitakushi. The 'Western-Style' architecture, composed of refering pattern books, differs from the 'Pseudo-Western-Style' architecture, built by Japanese carpenters who imitate the surferical 'Western-Style' architecture.

    Japanese, The subject of this paper is to make evident the changes in farmhouse plans in Harbin city and Shenyan city, Northeast of China. We surveyed farmhouses from traditional to modern near Harbin city and Shenyan city. But, concerning old farmhouses built before World War II, we depended on the reports that were written by Japanese researchers at that time. The results showed that plans for farmhouses changed according to progress in the heating system.

    Japanese, We researched the house plan, living style of houses in Shen Yang, northeast China. We cleared how to use a Kang and living conditions of houses. We can find the tipycal northern life style that people use a Kang as original heating system and they have unique activities on the Kang. Many life work is developing on the Kang, for example sleeping, eating, firesude, relax and so on. A Kang is most important system ranked in northeast China.

    Japanese, A purpose of this paper is to make clear the characteristic and the trend of life style of northern region in China. From the point of cleanliness, we focus onto usage of GASHITSU, an equipment of kitchen and a situation of taking on-off shoes. The traditional feeling of cleanliness is observed on urban apartment house. However, the current component of apartment unit spaces is not corresponding to traditional feeling of cleanliness. To consider the hierarchy of cleanliness and the traditional feeling of cleanliness is need to urban apartment house unit planning at northern region in China.

    Japanese, This paper examines the case of the Kosano (1936-37) and the Kogawa (1941-42) company's residential area of Nippon Steel Corporation Kamaishi Works. We show the restored diagrams of each areas and housing plans, and make consideration on it. Each area was characterized by public squares, named "Hiroba". A community was made up by public squares where probably had a function of fire prevention. Both areas have evaluation as sustainable housing areas.     Japanese, This paper deals with the process of demolishing the Kinold Memorial Pavilion of Fuji Gakuen, Sapporo, designed by architect Max Hinder in 1924, and with the citizens movement toward preserving it. The Kinold Memorial Pavilion was selected as one of 100 cultural hometown properties of Sapporo as well as one of 88 historical and cultural properties of Kita-ku in Sapporo. This paper proposes that we should not only refer to the investigation report or drawings of measuring the historical buildings but also to the citizens movement for preservation of historical properties.

    Japanese, 10 official residences, for foreign professors of Hokkaido Imperial University and Otaru Higher Commercial School, were built between 1925 and 1927. We have been able to ascertain the outline of these residences, by statement and old photos from former residents, and by the historical materials and plans which were kept at Hokkaido University and Otaru University of Commerce. These residences used the improved Japanese-style fittings, and were designed for protection against cold. They can be said to the best advanced example of the improvement of houses in Hokkaido at the end of Taisho era.

In the community called "Igakubu-bunkamura", they had certain relationship to the activities of the Bunka-Seikatsu Kenkyukai (Modern Life Society) promoted by Dr. Kokichi Morimoto, and wrote some essays on the society's jounal "Bunka-Seikatsu".   • A study on the succession of Japanese-style architecture in modern Japan

    Focusing on how traditional building techniques since the early modern period were inherited and developed after the Meiji era, we reconsidered the modernization of Japanese architecture from a different perspective than the conventional westernization. Regarding modern architectural education, we examined the contents of lectures given at higher education institutions and textbooks written by teachers, and considered the succession of traditionalarchitectural techniques. A list of manual books of traditional architectures handed down to the carpenters were created. As a result of comparing the indoor design of the modern Japanese-style inn with the model of the Edo period, it was clarified that it was reconstructed by combining multiple designs of the Edo period. Regarding the RC structure, which is a characteristic of modern times, we conducted a field survey in Hakodate City and Yamagata City to examine the process of disseminating RC temple architecture to rural areas.

  • Addition of disaster and academic survey format function and system reconstruction to historic building database

    We have newly constructed a survey system for damaged historic buildings by the frequent disasters in recent years, and provided them with a relational function to the Architectural Institute of Japan's General List of Historic Buildings (GLoHB) Database. Both systems are operated on the cloud server of Amazon Web Services, which is not affected by disasters in principle, and GLoHB has now been managed by the Architectural Institute of Japan. We are preparing to shift the disaster survey system to the management of the Architectural Institute of Japan, when the procedures for the system is completed.
    On the other hand, the function as the basic inventory of the "Modern Building Emergency Priority Survey" commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, which started in 2015, has been incorporated into GLoHB, and the preliminary survey and the print format of the final survey report have been prepared.

  • A Study on Propagation of Thoughts and Theories about Habitation Area Formation in Modern Industrial City to Japan

    This research discusses propagation of thoughts and theories about formation of employee habitation area and welfare facilities for securing labor from Europe, which earlier modernized, to modern Japan, where industries suddenly rose and private companies put them into practice. The analysis of several book collections in Japanese higher education institutions shows three facts: a) Faculties of Law, Economics and Commerce particularly collected books about industrial village, workers’ village and garden city movement from Meiji to Taisho era, b) some professors with that knowledge proposed companies establishing employee housing as garden city, c) private companies, such as Mitsubishi, systematically collected the enormous books and made a list of important books including that about Krupp company’s development of welfare facilities.

    The outline of study results are as follows. 1) After the Great East Japan earthquake Disaster, about 4000 historic architectures which exist in Tohoku and Kanto district were investigated and the individual basic data were input to a data base. 2) It's important to continue the investigation and study at the time of normality to do quick investigation and support in case of emergency. For the purpose, “Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ)” and “Japan Federation of Architects and Building Engineers Association” concluded a cooperation agreement. 3) The function of the system was improved to raise the utility of the data base. The data base AIJ made and the "Carta del Rischio" (the cultural asset dangerous map system) that an Italian national preservation restoration advanced laboratory made were compared and considered. 4) A symposium was held to exhibit study results.

    Company Town is defined as a town that had been planned between the mid-19th century and 1930, and can be divided into three phases. The first phase is before the 1880s, when the industrial landscape was formed under the paternalism. The second phase is called as "Model Town," underlying the concept of welfare capitalism. In the third phase, many towns were designed by planners, and had been greatly affected by the garden city movement.
    Though the back-to-back workers housing had been banned from hygienic point of view in United Kingdom and Japan, they are not prohibited in the European continent. Recently, by combining the new industrial attract with the value of industrial heritage to the industrial decline districts, those dwellings are renovated as public housing. In addition, we could ascertain diversity in the design of the external environment with a focus on the "garden" in the workers residential area of Western countries in the early modern era .

    We created a database system of historic buildings basic information, the location and image information. In the investigation of the historic buildings that were damaged by "The 2008 Iwate-hokubu Earthquake", we were able to confirm the usefulness of this database system. This database system has been used as a ledger book in a survey of the historic buildings that were damaged by "The 2011 East Japan (off the Pacific coast of Tohoku) Earthquake". Architectural Institute of Japan, Agency for Cultural Affairs and local governments are investigating damage of the historic buildings using this database.

    In this study, we observed the method of the development of company towns, which consists of dwellings, welfare facilities and infrastructure, and its idea, and we also ascertained the formation process the company towns by mining reports and historical materials.     This report presents the role of manuals of architectural design systems (the kiwari-systems) that were written during the 16th century (the last stage of the Muromachi period) to the 19th century (the last stage of the Edo period).
    Kiwari-system of one-span shrines and the Buddha hall of a Zen Temple was analyzed, and each design method and the transition process were compared in the historical architecture. In the one-span shrines, though various design methods existed in the Muromachi period, the design methods based on the Taruki-systems came to be used as the general methods after the middle stage of the Edo period. In the Buddha hall of a Zen Temple, the design methods based on the Taruki-system and the design methods based on the AIDA existed at the Muromachi period, and both had changed into the method of arranging Kuminono in an orderly manner in the early stage of the Edo period.
    Namerikawa-City Museum owns enormous historical records on the architecture. Those historical records were inherited by the IWAKIS who were master of carpenter. In this report, the kiwari-systems of the IWAKIS was compared with the buildings built by the IWAKIS and the relation of both was examined. A lot of drawings of the building that had been constructed in Kyoto and Tokyo besides the drawing of the main building that had been constructed in the Toyama area are included in the historical records of IWAKIS, so they are important to study the process of the modernization of Japanese architecture.

  • 近代日本における鉱工業系企業社宅街の成立と居住空間構成の特質に関する研究

    本研究当初より調査対象地区としてきた、香川県直島町の三菱マテリアル社宅について、特に傾斜地に立地する社宅街-鷲の松社宅とヘキ社宅-の2カ所について、敷地断面ならびに配置の実測を行なった。社宅は、会社を主体とする住宅地開発であり、そこには資本的バイアスのかからない、純粋な立地条件を拠り所とする居住システムを見ることができる。
    鷲の松地区においては、先発の社宅は工場に近いところから上級の役員が居住し、かつ高位に上級役員の住居が配置されている。後発の居住地区は、職級の低い役員に与えられ、これらは傾斜地としても低位にあたる。すなわち、複数の職級が混在する地区において、住戸の配置を決定するのは、工場への距離ならびに土地の高低差であることが、当該社宅地区において明らかとなった。また職工を対象としたヘキ社宅においては、土地の高低差や工場への距離は住戸配置には影響を与えず、グリッドにしたがった配置計画となっていた。そのため、浴場等共同施設へのアクセスの利便性を図るため、主要街路以外に法面にも階段をもうけていた。
    この考察と並行して、北海道内の鉱業系社宅街の居住傾向についても考察した。空知地方における炭礦住宅地であるが、産炭地は複数企業が同時に開発に入り、かつ谷間の立地という条件から住宅地としての余裕がなく、必然的に傾斜地に高密度に社宅街が開発された。職工地区では、先のヘキ社宅と同様、グリッドにしたがって配置された。
    一概に社宅街といっても、工業系と鉱業系では職階級の差異、立地など根本的に正確を異にする点が多数存在する。工業系だけでも職種によっても居住者の階層が異なる。さらに開発年代によっても、社宅開発への意図が異なるなどのことが改めて明らかとなった。社宅開発は、非都市域における、日本での住宅地開発の一事例である。今後さらなる事例の収集が望まれる。

  • Study on the house design and living sytle in the cold region of Northeast China - Comparative research on house planning theory of Japan and China

    We surveyed the house plan and people's lives of farm houses and urban apartment houses in Dalian, Shenyang and Haerbin in Norhteast China between 2000 and 2003. These three cities are typical big ones in northern region of China. The research work was completed with the cooporation of universities of China. We cleared many characteristics of house form and living style as follows.
    1) People have the typical house form with the original heating system of Kang peculiar to the northern region of China. Kang is very popular in rural districts. They adopt Kang both in traditional houses and new houses.
    2) Kang is not only heating equipment. It is surely multi-functional system. That is, people use Kang as sleeping bed, sitting bench, work-table, playing space and so on.
    3) We think, one of the most important functions of Kang is the clean floor space on it. People don't sit directly on the floor at all. People don't walk on the floor with their bare feet. People can sit directly on the Kang floor and enjoy their life in their bare feet.
    4) Accordingly the Kang room is multi-purpose space. The room is serving as bedroom, living room, drawing room and so on. Namely the Kang room is both energy intensive and space-intensive. So it is very rational and is suitable for the life in the northern countries.
    5) Also in urban apartment houses, we can find the typical life style similar to the case of farmhouses. Namely people use their bed in multi-purpose way.
    6) Generally the northern China house design and living style are original and common to the northern countries. So we should study to prepare the new house planning and design suitable for the northern life in China and Japan.

  • 大正・昭和初期北海道における郊外住宅地思想の展開と郊外住宅地開発に関する研究

    大正・昭和初期の郊外住宅地開発は、大都市における私鉄・土地会社によるものが主に研究されてきた。本研究では私鉄開発のない地方都市として、当時の10万人都市である函館、小樽、札幌を対象に、郊外居住思想の流れおよび住宅開発の経緯を追った。さらに、住宅改良の一側面として北海道住宅特有の防寒対策についても考察を加えた。
    函館では路面電車の延長と旧市街の人口周密に大火が重なり、東部地区への郊外居住思想が高まった。その背景には函館の篤志家三代目渡辺熊四郎の存在がある。彼は明治末より理想部落を函館に実現することを夢み、度々新聞紙上で発表してきた。最初に33,000坪の「みどり町通り」が実現し、さらに85,000坪の「桜ケ丘」を計画した。東部地区にはこれ以外にも、勝木照松の「平和村」、風間松太郎の「文化村」などがあるが、これら住宅地開発の速い時期に住宅建設を行ったのは、大正10年公布の住宅組合法による住宅組合であった。
    小樽では、榎本武揚と北垣国道が共有していた富岡地区の土地が大正中期に売買され、会社社宅などがつくられた。一方、奥沢川筋の急峻な傾斜地は、それより少し遅れて開発が始まる。ここでの住宅建設もまた住宅組合が先駆けであった。土地の制約が大きいため狭い土地に2階建ての住宅が多く建てられた。住宅の特徴は、二重窓など防寒対策が見られる反面、防寒に不利とされる縁側ものこり続き間形式を踏襲している。さらに内風呂付きが多く、外観に洋風出窓を設けているものが多い。
    札幌では、路面電車の西方への延長が契機となり、昭和恐慌以後も郊外住宅開発が盛んであった。北海道拓殖銀行による低利融資で、多くの住宅組合が組織され、土地会社小林商会が宅地を斡旋した。結果、路面電車沿いに集中して複数の組合による住宅が建つこととなった。札幌の組合住宅は、外観に洋風要素が強く、さらに「子供室」など家族本位の間取りも多く見られた。

  • 北海道大学「桑園博士町」における文化生活の導入と実践に関する研究

    「桑園博士町」の居住者達が、大正元年12月に発足した「村会」の記録である『村会日誌』、土地閉鎖登記簿などから、各居住者の博士町居住期間や居住箇所が明らかになった。「村会」に参加していたのは戦前までに延べ19名、居住区画は全12区画である。大学より借地ということもあり、各戸の区画が当時の札幌の持家層の標準に比べ圧倒的に広かったといえる。最も狭い敷地で211坪、最大は540坪、平均的なものは、一町角を中小路で半分割した、さらに4分の1の405坪であった。また、「村会」でしばしば議題にあがった土地所有問題については、結局昭和27年秋に払い下げが実施されたことが判明している。
    「博士町」の呼称は、管見であるが、昭和2年9月10日『北海タイムス』紙に最も古い記述を見ることができる。ここには「村会」構成員以外の北大教授の名前も「博士町」住人として記述されている。この記事から判断するに、一般には桑園での北大教授達のコロニーは認知されていたが、その中で「村会」を開催していたことは知られていなかったと推察できる。一方、「博士町」住人は、自ら「博士町」と呼ぶことに照れがあったであろうし、「村会」と自称していることから考えても、当人たちは「大学村」の名称を用いていたのではないだろうか。また、「博士町」の住宅については、前掲新聞記事に「各博士は文化住宅を建て」とあり、文化住宅の外観を呈していたことがわかる。
    森本厚吉との関連として月刊誌『文化生活』への寄稿をみると、新島善直、田中義麿の2名のコラムを確認できる。特に新島は「クリスマスツリー」と題したコラムを書いている。林学博士そしてクリスチャンとしての立場で、北海道風景の特質と重ね併せた表現をみてとれる。住宅についての直接的な文章ではないが、文化生活に関連した貴重な記述ととらえることができよう。

  • 文化普及会活動にみる森本厚吉による文化生活の提唱と住宅改良思想に関する研究

    森本厚吉を中心に大正末期から昭和初期にかけて展開された文化生活運動のうち、主に文化普及会出版部による月間雑誌『文化生活』の中から、生活改善および住宅改良に関する記述をもとに、森本厚吉が理想とした文化生活像とその普及の方針について考察した。
    (1)森本厚吉の住宅改良思想は、米国ボルチモアのジョンス・ポプキンス大学在学中に博士論文としてまとめられた“THE STANDARD OF LIVING IN JAPAN"を著した時点でほぼ完成している。後の単行本出版された著作においてもほとんど変化はない。
    (2)月間雑誌『文化生活』を通して、森本厚吉は文化生活の正しい概念を啓蒙することに専念し、住宅改良に関する彼自身の細やかな著述は見られない。かわりに、夫人である森本静子が主婦を対象に「家庭管理」の一環として、文化生活思想に基づいた住宅改良の方針を著している。
    (3)文化生活研究会時代(大正12年以前)は、建築全般について佐野利器にほとんど全てを頼っていたが、文化普及会設立後は、佐野利器の影は薄く、初期は文化アパートメントの設計を始めるまではW.M.ヴォ-リズが、それ以降は、主に住宅について山田醇が、建築全般を佐藤功一が担当する。
    森本厚吉は、あくまで専門である消費経済学の視点からの文化生活像を説くのみで、事住宅改良に関しては、ヴォ-リズ、山田醇、佐藤功一という専門建築家に任せていた。これは、文化生活という思想のもとに各専門家が集った同会の活動を顕著に示すことで、森本厚吉のコーディネーターとしての役割を評価すべきことである。

  • 北海道大学官舎に見る北海道近代住宅の洋風化の導入に関する研究

    北海道近代住宅を対象とした、住様式に見る「洋風化」の導入過程に関する研究は、開拓使より後、昭和戦前期までの総合的な考察は全く行なわれていなかった。本研究では、この期間の北海道大学官舎を対象に、北海道近代住宅の一事例としての官舎建築にみられる洋風化の導入とその過程について考察を加えた。
    北海道大学経理部管財課所蔵の『北海道大学所属国有財産沿革』を基本史料として創建および沿革について検討し、同施設部保管の設計図面、同北方資料室所蔵の札幌農学校簿書などにより補完した。以上より、札幌農学校創立間もない明治18年以前に14棟、大正14年から昭和2年の間に傭外国人教師官舎が6棟、それ以降に3棟の官舎の建築が明らかになった。
    北海道の官舎の嚆矢である開拓使官舎は「和風官舎」、「前期洋風官舎」、「後期洋風官舎」に大別される。「前期洋風官舎」は和風色の全くない純洋式住宅で、「後期洋風官舎」は資料に乏しく詳細は不明だが、和式の間取りに洋風の外観という和洋折衷の官舎であったという。札幌農学校時代の官舎は平家建が5棟、長屋建が9棟である。前者のうち3棟は傭外国人教師用の官舎で純洋式住宅であり、他の2棟も洋風色が濃い。後者は開拓使「和風官舎」と類似した平面であるが、外観に上下窓を用いており、開拓使「後期洋風住宅」を継承したものと言える。また、これらは改築が多く、明治から大正期への住様式の変遷を伺い知れる。中廊下式への改造、上下窓から引違窓への変更などが見られた。
    大正末〜昭和初期の傭外国人教師官舎では、寒地住宅の模索が見てとれた。ペチカという暖房装置の採用、上下窓の排除と引違いの二重窓の採用である。また、当時の住宅思想を反映した間取りの改良も見られる。
    北海道住宅の変遷は官舎を例に見ると、単純な「洋風化」というより、防寒性能の追及による「和風」と「洋風」の長所の融合ということができよう。
