English, Scientific journal, Abstract
Global concerns regarding the depletion and strategic importance of phosphorus resources have increased demand for the recovery and recycling. However, waste‐derived phosphorus compounds, primarily as chemically inert phosphoric acid or its salts, present a challenge to their direct conversion into high‐value chemicals. We aimed to develop an innovative technology that utilizes the large quantities of sewage waste, bypasses the use of white phosphorus, and enables esterification of phosphoric acid to produce widely applicable phosphate triesters. Tetraalkyl orthosilicates emerged as highly effective reagents for the direct triple esterification of 85 % phosphoric acid, as well as the esterification of organophosphinic and phosphonic acids. Furthermore, we achieved esterification of recovered phosphoric acid with tetraalkyl orthosilicate, thus pioneering a recycling pathway from sewage waste to valuable phosphorus chemicals. Experimental and theoretical investigations revealed a novel mechanism, wherein tetraalkyl orthosilicates facilitate multimolecular aggregation to achieve alkyl transfer from tetraalkylorthosilicate to phosphoric acid via multiple proton shuttling. - Photoinduced Enantioselective Triplet Radical Reaction on Metal: Copper‐Catalyzed Conjugate Addition of Acylsilanes to α,β‐Unsaturated Ketones and Aldehydes

Scientific journal, Abstract
Dirhodium complexes bearing bulky carboxylate ligands are synthesized and characterized. The steric bulk of carboxylate ligands could affect the reaction selectivity in Rh‐catalyzed intramolecular reactions: Rh catalysts with bulky carboxylate ligands provided five‐membered ring products preferentially via the insertion into a carbon–hydrogen bond. Meanwhile, six‐membered ring products were obtained using conventional Rh catalysts via the insertion of a carbon‐carbon double bond. - First-principles study on unidirectional proton transfer on anatase TiO2 (101) surface induced by external electric fields

Scientific journal, Abstract
Helically twisted conductive nanocarbon materials are applicable to optoelectronic and electromagnetic molecular devices working on the nanometer scale. Herein, we report the synthesis of per-peri-perbenzo[5]- and [9]helicenes in addition to previously reported π-extended [7]helicene. The homogeneously π-extended helicenes can be regarded as helically fused oligo-phenanthrenes. The HOMO−LUMO gap decreased significantly from 2.14 to 1.15 eV with increasing helical length, suggesting the large effective conjugation length (ECL) of the π-extended helical framework. The large ECL of π-extended helicenes is attributed to the large orbital interactions between the phenanthrene subunits at the 9- and 10-positions, which form a polyene-like electronic structure. Based on the experimental results and DFT calculations, the ultrafast decay dynamics on the sub-picosecond timescale were attributed to the low-lying conical intersection. - Deoxygenative CO2 conversions with triphenylborane and phenylsilane in the presence of secondary amines or nitrogen-containing aromatics

Scientific journal,Abstract Chemists have designed strategies that trigger the conformational isomerization of molecules in response to external stimuli, which can be further applied to regulate the complexation between Lewis acids and bases. We have recently developed a system in which frustrated carbene–borane pairs are revived from shelf-stable but external-stimuli-responsive carbene–borane adducts comprised ofN -phosphine-oxide-substituted imidazolylidenes (PoxIms) and triarylboranes. Herein, we report the detailed mechanism on this revival process. A thermally induced borane-transfer process from the carbene carbon atom to theN -phosphinoyl oxygen atom initiates the transformation of the carbene–borane adduct. Subsequent conformational isomerization via the rotation of theN -phosphinoyl group in PoxIm moieties eventually leads to the revival of frustrated carbene–borane pairs that can cleave H2. We believe that this work illustrates an essential role of dynamic conformational isomerization in the regulation of the reactivity of external-stimuli-responsive Lewis acid-base adducts that contain multifunctional substituents. - Co Single Atoms in ZrO2 with Inherent Oxygen Vacancies for Selective Hydrogenation of CO2 to CO

English, Scientific journal, There are diverse reactions including spin-state crossing, especially the reactions catalyzed by transition metal compounds. To figure out the mechanisms of such reactions, the discussion of minimum energy intersystem crossing (MEISC) points cannot be avoided. These points may be the bottleneck of the reaction or inversely accelerate the reactions by providing a better pathway. It is of great importance to reveal their role in the reactions by computationally locating the position of the MEISC points together with the reaction pathway. However, providing a proper initial guess for the structure of the MEISC point is not as easy as that of the transition state. In this work, we extended the nudged elastic band (NEB) method for multiple spin systems, which is named the multiple spin-state NEB method, and it is successfully applied to find the MEISC points while optimizing the reaction pathway. For more precisely locating the MEISC point, a revised approach was adopted. Meanwhile, our examples also suggest that special attention should be paid to the criterion to define an image optimized as the MEISC point. - Self-Assembled Multilayer Iron(0) Nanoparticle Catalyst for Ligand-Free Carbon-Carbon/Carbon-Nitrogen Bond-Forming Reactions

In visual systems and fluorescent proteins, controlling the photo-absorption/emission energy (color tuning) of the chromophore is the essentials to furnish a protein with the photo-functionality. Depending on the protein environment, the chromophores show a variety of colors, which are relevant to the character of the excited states and to the interactions between the chromophore and the environment. Here we summarize our recent studies on the spectral tuning mechanism of the human visual cone pigments and the fluorescent proteins. These studies elucidated a common feature in the color tuning, which also suggests a strategy to artificially control the color of proteins. We also explain our recent progress in developing the symmetry-adapted cluster-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) method and hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) method particularly for studying the photo-functional proteins., Japan Society for Molecular Science, Japanese - 錐体視物質におけるカラー・チューニング機構の解明:高精度量子化学計算による理論的研究

The purpose of this project is to contribute to the construction of a precisly controlled reaction field through the analysis of catalytic mechanisms in biocatalysts and similar reaction fields. We have developed a method for determining the reaction pathways through inter-system crossings in biocatalytic reactions, applied to the reaction mechanism of molecular adsorption in some metal complexes, and proposed guidelines for the ligand design. We also studied the inter-system crossing mechanisms of the catalytic reactions exhibited by myoglobin and, together with an experimental group, elucidated the origin of the catalytic activity exhibited by reconstituted myoglobin. In addition, we have collaborated on the analysis of reaction mechanisms through the collaborative researches and have clarified the physicochemical characteristics of a number of excellent catalytic systems. As a result, we were able to publish 38 original papers (including 13 in the area).

Solvatochromism and fluorescent solvatochromism are well-known phenomena in chemistry and biology, such as human color vision and fluorescent proteins. On the basis of our previous studies, we found essential roles of molecular environment that furnishes various functions via molecular interactions. In this study, we developed an wave-function-based method to efficiently describe the molecular interactions in the excited states. We also developed an analytical method to decompose the excited-state molecular interactions energies into polarization and dispersion effects. These approaches were applied for solvatochromic systems in solutions and clarified the origin of the spectral shift at the molecular resolution and at the physical-term resolution.

The main purpose of this project is to make a new theoretical and computational development of the higher-order relativistic GUHF-CCSD-CI method for chemical reactions and chemical phenomena in the electronic excited states, for example, photochemical reactions and fine potential energy surface considering the spin-orbit interaction and the intersystem crossing. In the GUHF-CCSD-CI method, the GUHF orbitals are used as reference and the CCSD is used for the electronic ground state. We finished the computer code of the GUHF-CCSD-CI method, and we applied this code to calculations of the singlet and triplet excited states and checked the accuracy in comparison with the non-relativistic CCSD, SO-CASPT2. The GUHF-CCSD-CI is meaningfully more accurate than the other methods. The SO-CASPT2 is accurate in light elements but not in heavy elements. Further, we carried out some relativistic quantum-chemical calculations for compounds containing heavy-elements.

Depending on molecular environment, some photo-functional proteins(human visual cone pigments and fluorescent proteins) significantly change their photo-absorption/emission energy. We performed quantum chemical calculations to analyze the mechanism. We found that, upon excitation, the charge distributions of the chromophores change significantly and the proteins produce polarized electrostatic potential. These two facts cause a synergy effect on the excitation energy. We also found that the wave functions of amino acids close to the chromophore also affect the excitation energy in some retinal proteins. To analyze the electronic effect of the protein environment, we have developed a new localization scheme that can localize MOs into predefined shapes and regions. This localization scheme was applied to analyze the pathway for the excitation transfer.
