In the course of Iago's seduction of Othello, he never proclaims explicitly that Desdemona has sexual relationships with Cassio. He, however, gives Othello clues, and makes him think himself. In the first half of his "poisoning," his clues are basically linguistic, and in the second half, his clues are "generally-accepted" ideas and the situations in which Othello is placed. During the whole procedure, the audience is always aware of Iago's black intention to ensnare Othello and Othello's restricted scope of understanding. The audience sees Iago who proceeds his machinations totally as he intends without damaging Othello's trust to him, and it also sees Othello who is entrapped to destruction, not knowing Iago's true nature. Thus, while the audience's sympathy to Othello is controlled, it also appreciates Iago's malignant nature in his extremely efficient command of language.

  • Hamlet vs Claudius: A Structural Analysis of Hamlet’s “Tardiness”
    MIYASHITA Yayoi
The Annual Report on Cultural Science, Hokkaido Univ., 141, 35, 79, 北海道大学大学院文学研究科, Nov. 2013, [Lead author, Corresponding author]
English, Scientific journal, In this essay, I propose a paradigm which will explain Hamlet’s “tardiness” by analysing the conflict between Hamlet and Claudius. Revenge involves an inherent contradiction: to exact revenge prompted by a murder, one also must commit another murder. On the other hand, the play begins with the infected state of Denmark, aiming for its purgation, and the process should exclude the vicious nature of a murder. Thus, Hamlet must pursue revenge in this restricted circumstance. In the course of the play, the intention of Hamlet and Claudius to kill each other, and their fear of being killed, grows greater and more serious as the plot develops. T o examine the process, which gradually increases in gravity, gives a possible explanation for Hamlet’s “tardiness”.
  • Maria’s Letter and the Gulling of Malvolio: A Strategy to Create Laughter
    MIYASHITA Yayoi
Studies in English. The regional branches combined issue, 4, 4, 37, 47, The English Society of Japan, Jan. 2012, [Peer-reviewed], [Lead author, Corresponding author]
English, Scientific journal, Shakespearean drama is composed mainly of the speeches of the characters and a small number of stage directions. But there runs a deeper stream of dramatic design underneath the apparent reflection of the characters' intentions, which gives his plays a meaningful substance. In this small essay, I shall examine how dramatic design works in Shakespeare's plays — in spite of the characters' intentions — through the handy, but very illustrative, example of Maria's letter and Malvolio's reaction to it. The gulling of Malvolio is one of the most exquisite coups de thèâtre in Shakespeare's plays, and has been a source of attraction for both actors and audience. It has rarely been noticed, however, that there is embedded in Maria's letter and Malvolio's reaction to it a very cunning system which engenders the audience's laughter. The aim of this essay is to lay bare this calculated system which is obscured by the forward movement of the scene.
  • Interweaving the Love Plot and the Reunion Plot in Twelfth Night
    MIYASHITA Yayoi
The Annual Report on Cultural Science, Hokkaido Univ., 131, 41, 72, Jul. 2010, [Lead author, Corresponding author]
English, Scientific journal, There has been an argument about the strangeness of the denouement of Twelfth Night: the reunion of the twins is, for many people, much more moving than the coupling of the lovers, although the latter is the main theme of the play and should be properly focused at the finale. It seems to me that this problem of focus occurs from the change Shakespeare had made to the main source of the play, Barnaby Riche’s ‘Of Apolonius and Silla.’ In Twelfth Night, although the situations of Orsino and Olivia are presented beforehand in 1.1, the shipwreck and the separation of the twins is the crucial incident from which all the factors in the play begin to move towards the solution at the denouement. The shipwreck, which separates the twins, also opens the way to make the love triangle of Orsino, Olivia, and Viola, and this opening setting has a fundamental influence to the play’s whole structure and the intensity at the finale. In this essay I analyse how the two separate themes, the reunion of the twins and the pairing of the lovers, are interwoven in one single work in order to produce a tremendous effect at the finale.
