蛍光材料を発光材料とする有機ELデバイスの発光層中に熱活性化遅延蛍光(TADF)材料をアシストドーパントとしてドーピングすることで、理論上の内部発光効率を100%まで向上させることに成功した。本手法は従来の高い蛍光量子収率かつ高い耐久性を持つ材料の特徴を最大限利用することが可能としており、TADF材料を発光材料として用いた有機ELデバイスで課題であった信頼性向上と色純度向上を実現する汎用性の高い技術である。これらの実績は、有機ELの高性能化に大きく寄与することが期待され、業績賞に値するものである。 - May 2016, 応用物理学会 有機分子・バイオエレクトロニクス分科会, 第14回応用物理学会 有機分子・バイオエレクトロニクス分科会奨励賞

Electron donor and acceptor interactions are the fundamentals for the emergence of optoelectronic functions in most organic devices. In particular, exciplexes, which hold the possibility to utilize dark triplets, are widely investigated in organic light‐emitting diodes. However, the relatively low radiative decay rate with a low photoluminescence quantum yield poses further advanced challenges. Traditionally, it is well recognized that exciplexes are formed through a charge transfer process, i.e., direct electron transfer, by photoexciting either a donor or an acceptor component. In this study, the focus is on a long‐range exciplex system where tris(4‐carbazoyl‐9‐ylphenyl)amine (TCTA) and 2,4,6‐tris[3‐(diphenylphosphinyl)phenyl]−1,3,5‐triazine (PO‐T2T) serve as the donor and acceptor, respectively. Moreover, 1,2‐bis(triphenylsilyl) benzene (UGH2) and bis[2‐(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide (DPEPO), having a wide energy gap and a high triplet energy level, are employed as the double insulating layer to suppressing direct electron transfer between the donor and acceptor. The indirect through‐space exciplex formation is demonstrated by the simultaneous excitation of both donor and acceptor layers optically and electrically, providing a new route for exciplex formation. - Impact of Spontaneous Orientational Polarization on Triplet–Triplet Upconversion-Based Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

English, Scientific journal, Hexacarbazolylbenzene (6CzPh), which is benzene substituted by six carbazole rings, is a simple and attractive compound. Despite the success of a wide variety of carbazole derivatives in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), 6CzPh has not received attention so far. Here, we reveal excellent performances of 6CzPh as a host material in OLEDs regarding conventional host materials. Various strategies have been implemented to improve the performance of OLEDs, e.g., triplet utilization by thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and phosphorescence emitters for maximizing internal quantum efficiency, and molecular orientation control for increasing outcoupling efficiency. The present host material is suited for both criteria. Robustness of the structure and sufficiently high triplet energy enables a high external quantum efficiency with a long device lifetime. Besides, the host material boosts the horizontal molecular orientations of several guest emitters. It is noteworthy that disk-shaped 4CzIPN marks the complete horizontal molecular orientations (Θh = 100%, S = -0.50). These results provide an effective way of improving efficiencies without sacrificing device durability for future OLEDs. This article is protected by copyright. Scientific journal, Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have undergone an unprecedentedly rapid development in both power conversion efficiency (PCE) and operational durability. However, a number of unknown challenges remain before PSC products are ready to launch. Herein, it is demonstrated that the vacuum deposition of gold (Au) onto the organic hole‐transport layer (HTL) results in Au penetration into the perovskite layer. This Au penetration proves to be a limiting factor in PCE due to detrimental carrier recombination caused by the penetrated Au component inside the perovskite light absorber. To mitigate this issue, a thin molybdenum oxide (MoOx) interlayer between the organic HTL and the Au electrode is introduced, effectively reducing the Au penetration and suppressing the carrier recombination. Consequently, this MoOx introduction increases PCEs from ≈16.9% to ≈19.6% by ≈2.7%. Furthermore, using the MoOx interlayer improves the long‐term durability of PSCs. A considerable variety of donor–acceptor (D–A) combinations offers the potential for realizing highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Multiple D–A type compounds are one of the promising families of TADF materials in terms of stability as well as efficiencies. However, those emitters are always composed of carbazole-based donors despite a wide choice of moieties used in linearly linked single D–A molecules. Herein, we developed a multiple D–A type TADF compound with two distinct donor units of 9,10-dihydro-9,9-dimethylacridine (DMAC) and carbazole as the hetero-donor design. The new emitter exhibits high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in various conditions including polar media blend and high concentrations. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) showed a reasonably high external quantum efficiency (EQE). In addition, we revealed that the multiple-D–A type molecules showed better photostability than the single D–A type molecules, while the operational stability in OLEDs involves dominant other factors. - Post-Modification of Pyrrolopyrrole Aza-BODIPY toward High Near-Infrared Fluorescence Brightness

Scientific journal, We studied the photophysical and electroluminescent (EL) characteristics of a series of azaborine derivatives having a pair of boron and nitrogen aimed at the multi-resonance (MR) effect. The computational study with the STEOM-DLPNO-CCSD method clarified that the combination of a BN ring-fusion and a terminal carbazole enhanced the MR effect and spin-orbit coupling matrix element (SOCME), simultaneously. Also, we clarified that the second triplet excited state (T2) plays an important role in efficient MR-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Furthermore, we obtained a blue–violet OLED with an external EL quantum efficiency (EQE) of 9.1%, implying the presence of a pronounced nonradiative decay path from the lowest triplet excited state (T1). - Tailor-Made Multi-Resonance Terminal Emitters toward Narrowband, High-Efficiency, and Stable Hyperfluorescence Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

English, We designed and synthesized two new ambipolar host materials, namely CzPO and Cz3PO. Combining CzPO and Cz3PO with CzTRZ2 as the emitter resulted in improved maximum external quantum efficiencies of 13.1% and 13.2%, respectively, together with small efficiency roll-offs, while the device based on bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide (DPEPO) as host showed a much more pronounced efficiency roll-off. - Photostable and highly emissive glassy organic dots exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence

English, A highly efficient sky-blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) based on a thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule, 1,2-bis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,5-dicyanobenzene (2CzPN), was studied. The sky-blue OLED exhibited a maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (ηEQE) of over 24.0%. Japanese,We report fluorescence-based organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that realize external EL quantum efficiencies approaching to nearly 20% for blue, green, yellow and red emissions, indicating that the singlet exciton production efficiency reached nearly 100%. The high performance is enabled by utilization of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules as energy donor that permit efficient transfer of all electrically generated singlet and triplet excitons from the energy donor to the conventional fluorescent emitters, i.e., energy acceptor. We revealed that the OLEDs employing this exciton harvesting process also provide significant enhancement of operational stability.

English, We succeeded in injecting and transporting a maximum high current density of $J=1163$ A/cm2 in organic light-emitting diodes using short-pulse excitation combined with a highly thermally conductive silicon substrate (thermal conductivity: 148 W m-1 K-1) and a small cathode configuration (cathode radius $r=50$ μm). A maximum current density almost 20 times higher than that associated with direct current (DC) operation was observed by driving an OLED with a short pulse voltage. With short-pulse excitation, the decrease in external quantum efficiency ($\eta_{\text{ext } }$) obeyed a typical singlet–singlet exciton annihilation model well, indicating that the generation of Joule heat in OLEDs can be suppressed under pulse operation. - Singlet-singlet and singlet-heat annihilations in fluorescence-based organic light-emitting diodes under steady-state high current density

We demonstrate a novel pathway to open an ultimate electroluminescence (EL) efficiency by using simple aromatic compounds displaying efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) having high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency. We found that a proper design of organic molecules enables the formation of a small energy gap between singlet and triplet excited states, resulting in the enhanced T_1 to S_1 reverse intersystem crossing (ISC). SPIE, Jan. 2016, English, We hereby report the results of our direct investigation into the excited-state dynamics of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules in solution using pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). We found that the charge-transfer (CT) state commonly stated for TADF molecules encompasses two forms: localized and delocalized CT states. A highly efficient TADF molecule, 4CzIPN [Uoyama et al., Nature, 492, 234-238 (2012)], showed both the localized and delocalized CT states, while an inefficient TADF molecule, 2CzPN, exhibited only a localized CT state. By analyzing the time profile of triplet species observed in TAS, we propose that the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) of 4CzIPN occurs via a mutual interaction in multiple energy levels of localized neutral and CT states, and delocalized CT states. - High-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes with blue fluorescent emitter

本研究では、有機半導体におけるスピン軌道相互作用(SOC)の「制御」・「理解」・「機能化」を三位一体とし、スピンオービトロニクスを基盤とした革新的電子スピンデバイスの創成を目指す。SOCはスピン磁気モーメントと電子の軌道運動が生み出す磁場の相互作用である。無機個体におけるSOCの研究は古くから行われているものの、軽元素から構成される有機固体におけるSOCは意味だに未解明な部分も多い。本研究では、適切にSOC制御されたヘテロアセン分子群を用いて、革新的な電子スピンデバイス実装の足がかりとなる基盤研究を遂行してきた。ここでは、合成化学・凝縮系固体物理学・デバイス工学を包括的に組み 合わせることでのみ実現する有機スピンオービトロニクスの学理を整備し、有機半導体ならではのフレキシビリティや低温・塗布プロセスの強みを活かした革新 的な基盤技術・マテリアルサイエンスへと展開する。 研究二年次では、従来溶液中の孤立分子でのみ計測されていなかったSOCを固体薄膜において実測する手法の開発を進め、含カルコゲンヘテロアセン材料を対象にSOCの定量化に到る方法論を確立を進めた。SOCの理論的なアプローチは密度汎関数計算をベースに下位幸弘と共に行った。並行し て、代表者である渡邉は、スピン機能性の計測を行うためのデバイス作製手法の開発や、測定系の構築を行い、有機半導体のSOCを統一的に理解するためのツール を整備した。特に、極低温における磁気抵抗効果からSOCの強さを電気的に検出可能な道筋も経ちつつあり、顕著な成果が得られつつある。

従来、有機超伝導体は主にCT錯体を中心に、その可能性が1970年代から90年初頭に亘って幅広く検討されてきたが、極低温や超高圧条件が必要であり、室温有機超伝導体実現への道程はほど遠い状況にある。そのため、新規なメカニズムや材料・デバイス構成に関する斬新なアイディアが必要とされている。本提案では、Little及びGinzburgの2つの古典的なモデルを基礎に、近年、有機光エレクトロニクス研究分野で培われてきた新規な有機系CT材料や薄膜中で特異的に大きな分極(GSP: Giant Spontaneous Polarization)を示す分子系材料、さらには、近年、太陽電池等で大きな注目を集めている有機・無機ハイブリッドペロブスカイト構造を利用し、積層薄膜型の室温有機超伝導の実現に取り組む。具体的には電子分極層(P)/導電層(C)/電子分極層(P)を基本構造とし、薄膜導電層中の伝導電子と誘電層内の分極性分子との間で電子分極効果を発現することでクーパー対の形成を目指している。
本年度は、Littleのモデルとして、二次元ペロブスカイト構造を基礎に有機・無機材料成分の最適化について検討を行い、薄膜形成や単結晶形成を試み、電気物性計測が可能なデバイスを構築、基礎的な電気伝導性の確認を行った。また、Ginzburgのモデルにおいては、ドナー分子としてmMTDATAを、アクセプター分子としてF16CuPcを用いることで、積層薄膜構造において分子間CTを形成し導電性の著しい向上を確認した。今後、2種類の材料系において、電子分極の大きさを調整し、導電層内のクーパー電子対形成に繋げていく。

本研究の最終目標は、有機分子系において生成される電荷移動(CT)型励起子に着目し、励起子解離過程における励起スピン状態選択性を実証することで、逆電子移動損失ゼロという革新的な光電変換素子を実現することである。
R3年度においては、熱活性化遅延蛍光(TADF)分子である2,4,5,6-tetra(9H-carbazol-9-yl)iso-phthalonitrile (4CzIPN)、1,2,4,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-3,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzTPN)をモデル化合物として、薄膜中での電荷生成機構の解明、および励起スピン状態が励起子解離過程に及ぼす影響について研究を実施した。薄膜中での電荷生成機構の解明に関しては、光電子顕微鏡を検出器とする二光子光電子分光を用いた時間分解光電子顕微鏡(TR-PEEM)により、TADF分子膜中での電荷生成の過渡的な検出に成功した(Advanced Optical Materials, 9, 2100619, 2021)。また励起スピン状態が励起子解離に及ぼす影響に関する研究では、新たに開発した電場変調型過渡発光測定装置を用い、各種TADF分子をドーピングした共蒸着薄膜を試料として電場変調型過渡発光測定を実施した。その結果、分子内TADFを示す4CzIPN薄膜では、励起一重項準位からではなく、励起三重項準位から優先的に励起子解離が進行している事実を明らかとした(Science Advances, 8, abj9188, 2022)。これは、励起三重項状態の励起子寿命が励起一重項状態よりも極めて長いとともに、その励起子解離エネルギーが同程度であるためと理解できる。この結果は、従来は電荷損失の原因とされていた励起三重項状態が、本質的には励起子解離に対して有利であることを示す結果である。

本研究では振動発電に着目し、その核心材料であるエレクトレット材料の性能を飛躍的に高め、これまでにないエレクトレット材料を創出することを最終的な研究目的としている。近年、有機低分子薄膜で形成される有機薄膜中分子の自発配向分極を利用することで、コロナ帯電処理なしに自己組織化的にエレクトレットが形成されることが報告され、大きく注目されている。そこでR3年度の研究では、種々の有機半導体分子における自発配向分極特性を調査するとともに、有機分子薄膜で形成される自発配向分極を制御するための因子について検討し、自己組織化エレクトレットを使用した振動発電素子をより高出力化する手法を提案することを目指した。
R3年度は、ケルビンプローブ法を用いて有機半導体薄膜の自発配向分極特性を観測するため、その場測定可能な真空蒸着装置を設計・構築した。また、3,6-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-9-phenylcarbazole(PO9)をモデル化合物として、9-(3,5-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole(CzPO2)、2,7-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-9-phenyl-9H-carbazole(PPO27)、9-phenyl-3,6-bis(4-(1-phenyl-1H -benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole(CNBzIm)などの誘導体について、その自発配向分極特性を作製した装置を用いて評価した。結果、CNBzIm薄膜が大きな自発配向分極(~80 mV/nm)を示すこと、さらに蒸着速度および蒸着回数、成膜待機時間が、自発配向分極特性に大きく影響することを見出した。これは、真空蒸着中の有機薄膜表面における分子配向挙動が、その自発配向分極特性を決定しているためと理解できる。

In this study, we aimed to dramatically improve the exciton generation yield in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) by fusing two different spin conversion mechanisms: (1) thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and (2) singlet fission (SF) processes. During this research project, the world's first SF-type OLED that exhibits over 100% exciton generation yield was realized by incorporating molecules showing SF into the OLED. Further, the basic physics of the TADF process was clarified from both experimental and theoretical aspects, and we succeeded in developing a highly efficient and durable NIR-OLED that can be applied to practical applications. Through this research project, the feasibility of "OLED exhibiting exciton generation yield of 200%" was obtained.

OLEDs using TADF molecules are a breakthrough technology that can convert electric current to light with almost 100% efficiency using relatively simple aromatic compounds. Under current excitation, TADF molecules can up-convert a triplet excited state to a singlet excited state with 100% quantum efficiency. However, since it passes through the triplet state, it has a relatively short device lifetime, and it has been expected that the durability is improved by the short triplet excitation lifetime. In this study, we succeeded in creating an epoch-making TADF molecule with triplet excitation lifetime of 750ns by using precise stereo-control of donor and acceptor units and through-space interaction.

In the OLEDs, when expose them to ambient air without any encapsulation layer, a non-emissive spots, i.e., “dark spots”, are grow up with increase an operational time according to low corrosion resistance of low work-function metal, leading to death of the OLEDs. Thus, encapsulation with a high required performance for prevent the penetration of water and oxygen or complexity of the device architecture is believed to be the solutions for preventing a degradation of OLEDs even in air, but these ideas wreak both an increasing of final fabrication time and production cost. Here, we report on that simple but effective approach to toward “low-cost” and “air-stable” OLEDs, in which a utilization of low WF ternary alloy system based on Mg- Ca-Al that had been overlooked during the long years of research on organic electronics.
