Profile Information

  • In recent years neighborhood nature which seemed to be a commonplace has been lost steadily. However, only when we have had a large-scale disaster caused by extreme events such as “the first in history of observation” occurring every year, many people have realized the great resilience of natural areas which absorbed such phenomena. Now that we are in a declining population society, we believe that utilizing these natural forces as infrastructure is the most reasonable planning for national landscapes.

However, in order to use Green in the form that one wishes, appropriate management is required. We are studying the appropriate planning and management method for  utilizing the power of nature.

English, Scientific journal, The eastern coastal areas of Japan are threatened by multiple ecological risks due to frequent natural disasters, climate changes, human activities, etc. Identification spatio-temporal variations and driving mechanisms of landscape ecological risk could be used as significant basis for policymakers. In this study, taking the eastern coastal areas of Japan affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster as the study area, the “Nature-Landscape Pattern-Human Society” (NA-LP-HS) multi-dimensional ecological risk assessment framework was established to analyze the spatio-temporal patterns, and identity driving factors using spatial cluster analysis and spatial principal component analysis (SPCA) based on ArcGIS from 2009 to 2021. The findings revealed the distinct geographic patterns in landscape ecological risk, with a noticeable decline from the southwest to the northeast. During the period from 2009 to 2015, the driving factors leading to a sharp risk increase were natural disasters and vegetation coverage. These high-risk areas were concentrated in Sendai Bay and its surroundings. From 2015 to 2021, ecological instability was primarily attributed to a reduction in vegetation coverage, the occurrence of natural disasters, and heightened rainfall erosion. These high-risk areas were mainly clustered within the Tokyo-centered urban agglomeration. Spatial clustering of ecological risks was obvious across all time periods. The key factors contributing to the clustering of high ecological landscape risks focused on the “landscape pattern” criterion, specifically including vegetation coverage, land use land cover. This study demonstrated the ability of multi-dimensional ecological risk assessment to identify high-risk areas and driving factors, and these results could provide a visual analysis and decision-making basis for sustainable development of coastal areas.

Ecology and Civil Engineering, 25, 2, 141, 159, Ecology and Civil Engineering Society, 31 Mar. 2023, [Peer-reviewed], [Domestic magazines]
Japanese, Scientific journal, This report describes the progress of biodiversity conservation projects and initiatives in the reconstruction of coastal protection facilities after the Great East Japan Earthquake in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, as well as the research and evaluation conducted there. Biodiversity conservation projects and efforts in the reconstruction of coastal protection facilities in Miyagi Prefecture include the unconstruction or downsizing, setting back, laying coastal sand for seawalls, and the designating conservation areas without mounding or laying coastal sand on mounds for coastal protection forests. It is considered to be a characteristic of coastal protection facility reconstruction projects in Miyagi Prefecture that such diverse biodiversity conservation projects and efforts were carried out in many locations. In addition, many residents and NPOs are included in the requestors and proponents of biodiversity conservation (including sandy beach conservation). The involvement of many experts in various fields of expertise in biodiversity conservation projects and efforts, and the fact that there are locations where multiple biodiversity conservation projects and efforts were conducted are also considered to be characteristics of the projects in the prefecture. Since the effects of many of these biodiversity conservation projects and efforts have not been verified, there is an urgent need to investigate and verify the effects of them. Miyagi Prefecture has a wide variety of biodiversity conservation projects and efforts, and seems to be a suitable region for the verification and evaluation of various types of projects. In addition, since some of the projects were implemented in close proximity to each other, it is considered to be a valuable site for investigating synergistic effects of them or the effects of ensuring continuity between different environments.
  • Establishing Landscape Networks Based on Visual Quality and Ecological Resistance: A Case Study in Tianmeng Scenic Spot, China
    Menglin Xu, Hajime Matsushima
    Forests, 14, 3, 516, 516, MDPI AG, 06 Mar. 2023, [Peer-reviewed], [Corresponding author]
English, Scientific journal, Forest-based scenic spots have received widespread attention for their landscape aesthetics and ecological value, but the rapid growth of tourism and landscape exploitation make it challenging to balance human recreational needs, landscape quality, and ecological stability. This study aimed to evaluate, quantify, and grade landscape quality from the point of view of subjective human aesthetic needs as well as objective landscape visual sensitivity. After the selection of high-quality landscape viewpoints as sources, the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model was used to screen the optimal paths for connectivity among viewpoints with consideration of ecological resistance. High-quality landscape viewpoints, optimal paths, and ecological-resistance surfaces constructed the landscape network for sustainable development. The results showed that the landscape quality of viewpoints in Tianmeng Scenic Spot was not good; only 32.4% of these viewpoints had good performance of both landscape aesthetics and landscape visual sensitivity. In the analysis of ecological-resistance surfaces, the proportion of very-high resistance areas and high resistance areas was 32.9%, and these were mostly distributed in the main tourist roads and their buffer areas around the northwest of Tianmeng Mountain Scenic Spot. Eleven landscape core viewpoints and six secondary viewpoints, all with high landscape aesthetics, were selected as high-quality visual landscapes, and then based on the ecological-resistance surfaces, 11 core landscape-dissemination paths and 6 secondary landscape-dissemination paths were identified, respectively, using the MCR model. This method could provide scientific decision support to enhance the effectiveness of viewpoints as well as sustainable landscape planning for development.

Japanese Journal of Conservation Ecology, 26, 2021, 333, 343, The Ecological Society of Japan, Nov. 2021, [Peer-reviewed], [Domestic magazines]
Japanese, Scientific journal, The Ecological Society of Japan submitted "The opinion for suspension of wind farm construction on the Zenibako Coast" to the Government of Hokkaido and the wind farm owner in 2011, reflecting concerns regarding the academic and ecosystem values of the proposed construction in the area. In addition, an Aftercare Committee (ACC) was established. However, the wind farm was constructed and became operational in February 2020. To evaluate the associated ecosystem impacts, the ACC completed landscape, vegetation and avifauna surveys on and adjacent to the wind farm in the summer of 2020. The surveys yielded four key results: (1) yards occupied 61% of the 5.5-ha footprint and soil erosion was prevalent along road slopes; (2) the greatest ecosystem alteration occurred in the grassland zone, as the wind farm was established nearly parallel to the coastline; (3) exotic plant species, especially Cakile edentula, have established and become widespread on roads and yard areas; and (4) avifaunal populations have declined and the community has become simplified.

Japanese, Scientific journal, This paper is intended to learn from Okushiri Island which was suffered serious damage in 1993 and discusses tsunami as a key hazard which causes disaster. The purpose of this study is 1) to grasp the attributes, disaster experience, evaluation of disaster reconstruction and the consciousness of islanders and 2) to make the structure of evaluation of disaster reconstruction clear. A questionnaire survey for all 1,433 householders on the island was employed in 2015. As a result, self-help and mutual aid were supported as the most strengthening countermeasures against future disasters. In addition to this, the quick recovery from the damage and the comprehensive recovery process received positive evaluation from the viewpoint of recovery of the basis of their livelihood. However, the awareness of self-help of islanders who resided after the disaster was deteriorated and disaster prevention measures using parks, green spaces and disaster prevention forests were not emphasized in islanders’ awareness. In conclusion, the promotion of understanding of ecosystem functions which are assumed to be used just after a disaster was suggested.

Journal of The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 75, 5, 537, 540, Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, May 2012, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, Scientific journal, The coastal line of our country is long, approximately 35,000km, and various forms such as a muddy beach, a sandybeach, a rocky beach and a cliff. The coastal area was very important area for our life, industry, transportation, etc. from ancienttime. It is important to understand "the mindscape" which a modern Japanese holds for coastal landscape because of the decrease of the natural coast and the terrible recreational use of the coastal area. In this study, it was intended to identify the structure ofcoastal "mindscape" and factors that would influence their mindscape. The questionnaire survey was conducted to graduate andundergraduate students from August to October 2010. The questionnaire was consisted with two main part, survey about figureof the coastal mindscape and individual background of respondents. As a result, the "sandy beach" and sea were the majorcomponent of mindscape. Because most respondents enjoyed sea bathing as recreational use, it was guessed that the viewpointfrom the beach were dominated and inland area, like coastal dune, was not described. About the mindscape of half respondents were influenced by real scenery they had seen, but the remaining respondents were influenced by some kind of media such asphotographs or TV programs.

Japanese, Scientific journal, The purpose of this study was to survey the information which was needed by recreational users in advance for their appropriate management on Ishikari Coast, Hokkaido.1,000 questionnaire surveys which asked advanced information, information source and information facilities they used and also asked to evaluate their importance and quality were distributed on the beach of Ishikari Coast, 375 were returned back by mail, and 341 were analyzed.About a half of respondents did not used advance information before their visit, but other most of all visitor checked the weather report. The advance information they needed were different with their purpose of visit, their age and their experience of visit.Thirty's years old (and/or younger) visitors and 10 times or more repeated visitors did not check any information and did not visit any information facilities in Ishikari Coast. As a conclusion,on-site interpretive activities are important to establish the appropriate recreational management of visitors, and should turn gently to the off-site information provision, like a portal web site of Ishikari Coast, in the future.

Journal of The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 72, 5, 825, 828, Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, May 2009, [Peer-reviewed]
English, Scientific journal, In this study were compared three different management type sandy coast , and considered as subjects for appropriate recreational use management on Ishikari coast, Hokkaido. 1,000 questionnaire surveys were distributed on the site and 375 were returned back by mail. The purposes of the visitors, and also their attributes, were different in regard to the management type of the coast. The park users were elder and were interested in conservation of coastal plants. Although the beach users should have paid for parking lots, they had complained about insufficient facilities and their maintenance. The non-managed beach users had various purposes, like swimming, camping, fishing, ATV and PWC riding, but such purposes had caused conflict between users, and had significantly higher points of awareness of the issues such as leaving garbage, human waste, and annoyed other visitors. As a result of this research it may be concluded that strict rules and regulations are needed for non-managed beaches for sustainable recreational use. It can also be suggested that the collection of entrance fees or parking charge at non-managed beaches will work effectively towards user management. Coastal managers should develop sustainable management strategy and preserve the coasts for the future generations.

Journal of The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 71, 5, 843, 848, Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 2008, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, Scientific journal, In Japan, Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) use at coastal area, especially sandy beach, have become serious problem both impact of natural resources and conflict with other recreational users, and have needed to take some action. This paper considers to control ORVs use at coastal area for sustainable management, through comparison of the trends and the issues of ORVs use regulations on sandy beaches between U. S. A. and Japanese case. There are some ORVs regulations in U. S. national parks and they applied an adoptive management theory. While there are also some ORVs restricted areas in Japanese natural park areas, it is intended to protect endangered species or characteristic landscapes. For the future management of ORVs use, this study suggest the following issues : 1) the establishment of ORVs use rules and regulations, 2) application of adoptive management theory, and 3) environmental and safety educations of ORVs users.
  • Effects of using interpretation method in regard to public beach management at Ishikari Coast, Hokkaido.

Journal of The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 70, 5, 523, 526, The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, May 2007, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, Scientific journal, Ishikari coast, Hokkaido, has valuable natural beaches, dunes, forest and other natural resources. But in the last few decades, serious environmental problems and conflicts among recreational users have occurred because of heavy recreational use of the coastal areas. However, neither new regulations nor management systems have been established in this area yet. The purpose of this study is to point out the effectiveness of the interpretation method (informing visitors) in help of establishing a system to better manage users' behaviors. Questionnaire sheets were distributed to 72 Ishikari coast visitors to survey their opinions on the recreational use problems and on ideas about the optimum management of the Ishikari coast in the future. The results showed that the opinions were different between visitors who were informed about the environmental problems of Ishikari coast (interpreted groups) and those were not (non-interpreted groups). The interpreted groups were likely to prefer more conservancy oriented management and environmentally friendly use of coastal natural resources than non-interpreted groups. This result indicates that informing visitors about the environmental problems with the help of an interpreter can be an effective tool for the management of public beach resorts.

Japanese, Scientific journal, To clarify the effects of sheep pasturing to meadow in open space on plant height, standing crop, and people's impression, six sheep were pastured in the grass (about 800m^2) in the campus of Hokkaido University for 13 days. Although the plant height or standing crop could be controlled by sheep grazing, the extent differed depending on the plant species. Influences of variability of the growth level of each plant species and the palatability of each plant species on the control of plants were considered. In further experiments, effects of the timing of pasturage or palatability on the control of plant height or standing crop should be confirmed. In the survey, it was clarified that respondents had regarded the sheep favorably or the scenery including sheep, and generally agreed with the use of sheep in grass management. However, there is a possibility that many of respondents have been interested in sheep pasturage in advance, because there were several reports by the media before pasturage. Attitudes of residents or tourists to the sheep grazing should be further evaluated.

Japanese, Scientific journal, Although the importance of wetland environment has been recognized widely, some wetlands located in or near urbanized regions in Hokkaido have been exposed to development pressures. This study attempted to evaluate the wetland landscapes under such conditions in Iburi Region. Using a photo questionnaire, image impressions and attitudes toward wetlands were surveyed. As a result, two factors of the wetland images, "general evaluation" and "spatial characteristic" were identified. Based on the factor scores sampled, 21 photo were grouped into 6 clusters. The clusters showed that man-made elements in the photos had a great negative effect on the general evaluation. Although some facilities for users decreased the feeling of nature, the effect on the general evaluation was not significant. Based on the correspondent analysis, the respondents were classified into two groups such as, "protection oriented" and "development or use oriented". A relatively high proportion of respondents who live in or near Iburi were grouped into the latter group. Few differences of the landscape evaluation by the "attitude groups" were found.

Japanese, Scientific journal, In some natural parks, the increase of personal water crafts seems to cause the impact on their natural resources and visitors' experience. Some parks administrators have realized such problems, and they have practiced several control methods through law enforcement, by-laws and self-imposed rule. We gathered information about the method and process of some use adjustment, and interviewed related officials and personel. Results suggests the necessity of close connection among stakeholders, and the importance of public participation.

Japanese, Scientific journal, In coastal dunes, the destruction of vegetation by vehicles is of great concern. The purpose of this study was to investigate the running impact of vehicles on vegetation and soil, by comparing disturbed and undisturbed areas. The study area was enclosed by a fence and vehicles were prohibited from entering from 1992. At that time the disturbed areas were bare ground. This study was carried out in 2001, in the Ishikari coastal dune in Hokkaido. In the zone dominated by Elymus mollis near the shoreline, vegetation in disturbed areas had almost recovered. The spread of the species, reproduced by rhizomes, was thought to be the reason for the fast recovery. However, in this zone, except for the areas nearest the shoreline, soil was hardened and running impact remained. The reason the impact on soil did not remain only nearest the shoreline is thought to be that the impacted soil had been buried by accumulated sand carried from the sea along with wind. In the zone dominated by Rosa rugosa farther from the shoreline, the species, which is a naturalized and not present in the undisturbed areas, invaded the disturbed areas. Thus, vehicle running destroyed the zonation of vegetation. The soil hardness was still observed from the surface to a depth of 50 cm. Since sand hardly accumulates in this zone, the impact on soil is considered to remain over the long term, and there is also thought to be the possibility of not recovering to original vegetation.

Japanese, Scientific journal, Comparison of coastal landscape resources and land-uses on Hokkaido were discussed in this paper. Conservation of landscape resources, particularly natural coasts, were disturbed by their land-uses. Comparison of the changes in natural coastal areas belonging to natural parks versus those not belonging to natural parks, revealed almost no changes in the former but decreases in the latter, and in particular decreases of sandy gravel coasts. This could be explained by the fact that the management level of coastal areas belonging to natural parks is not as intensive as of those not belonging to. Since the proportion of the sandy gravel coasts in natural park areas has the lowest percentage compared to cliff and rock formations, their preservation and management should be considered.

Japanese, Scientific journal, As coastal use increases, various problems concerning the coastal environment and user conflict have happened. To grasp these coastal user perceptions about coastal environments, landscapes and other users is helpful for management of these areas. The oral survey of coastal users was conducted at Ishikari Coast, Hokkaido in the summer of 1999. In this survey, coastal users were asked to evaluate 18 photos of coastal landscapes, to mention open-ended descriptions associated with ‘Coast’ and ‘Ishikari Coast’ and to talk about their knowledge and thought for coastal environment and management. These results were summarized as follows:
    1) Use of place selection was dependent on their activities and management of these places.
2)‘Coast’ reminded users of objective images about the coast or activities pertaining to them. The other, ‘Ishikari Coast’, reminded users of subjective features about this place or knowledge, they have.
    3) User evaluation of coastal landscape and user thought about environment depended on their coastal activities. This tendency was especially negative concerning human impact, while most users preferred natural landscapes.

CRC Press, Feb. 2022, 9780429053252, 310, 89-106, English, Scholarly book, Sandy beaches are the most abundant coastal environments worldwide, which have an undeniable and unique ecological value. Presently, they are amongst the most endangered ecosystems in the biosphere, mainly due to the influence of several human activities. In this book, renowned scientists from around the world describe key attributes of sandy beaches and highlight the problems which impact them. Specific tools encompassing the physical environment and the biota are pointed out, at different levels of ecological organization. The book also covers suitable management, conservation programmes and respective actions, where ecologic, economic and social dimensions are comprehensively integrated., [Internationally co-authored], [Peer-reviewed], [Contributor]
  • Green Infrastructure and Climate Change Adaptation
Futoshi Nakamura, Challenging a Hybrid Between Green and Gray Infrastructure: Coastal Sand-Covered Embankments
Springer, Jan. 2022, 9789811667916, 506, 323-334, English, Scholarly book, This open access book introduces the function, implementation and governance of green infrastructure in Japan and other countries where lands are geologically fragile and climatologically susceptible to climate change. It proposes green infrastructure as an adaptation strategy for climate change and biodiversity conservation.

In the face of climate change, dams, levees and floodways built as disaster prevention facilities do not sufficiently function against extraordinary events such as mega-floods and tsunami disasters. To prevent those disasters and loss of biodiversity in various ecosystems, we should shift from conventional hard measures to more adaptive strategies using various functions that natural and semi-natural ecosystems provide. Green infrastructure is an interconnected network of waterways, wetlands, woodlands, wildlife habitats and other natural areas that support native species, maintain natural ecological processes, sustain air and water resources and contribute to the health and quality of life for communities and people. Green infrastructure has mainly been discussed from adaptation strategy perspectives in cities and urban areas. However, to protect cities, which are generally situated at downstream lower elevations, we explore the preservation and restoration of forests at headwater basins and wetlands along rivers from a catchment perspective. In addition, the quantitative examination of flood risk, biodiversity, and social-economic benefits described in this book brings new perspectives to the discussion.

The aim of this book is to accelerate the transformative changes from gray-based adaptation strategies to green- or hybrid-based strategies to adapt to climate change. The book provides essential information on the structure, function, and maintenance of green infrastructure for scientists, university students, government officers, and practitioners., [Internationally co-authored], 26022576, [Peer-reviewed], [Contributor]

, 26022293, [Domestic Conference]
  • The impact of the reduction of beach width by seawall construction on the distribution of ground prowling insects

JpGU2021, Jun. 2021, Japan Geoscience Union, English, Poster presentation
online, Seawalls were constructed on sandy beaches in the Sendai coast, Miyagi prefecture after the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on 11 March 2011. These structures narrowed the beaches and it is concerned that the coastal ecosystems are degraded due to the direct impacts of habitat loss and indirect impacts of the increased environmental pressures from the sea such as waves, sand transportations, salt sprays, etc. It has been suggested that such anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems may also affect the nutrient cycle in the ecotone between sea and land, and it is required to clarify the impacts quantitatively. The purpose of this study was investigated whether the distribution of ground prowling insects living on the beach is affected by the reduction of the beach width caused by seawall constructions.
The survey was conducted in the coastline of Miyagi prefecture at five sites: Arahama A and B (Sendai City), Ido (Sendai City), Yuriage (Natori City), Kitagama (Natori City). These sites were selected considering the width of the beach and the state of the vegetation. Ground prowling insects were sampled by pitfall traps. The traps were set from the seawall to the shoreline in a direction vertical to the seawall at 20 m intervals for approximately 40 hours. These samplings were undertaken from 26 to 28 August 2020.
The results suggested that the loss of vegetation caused by the reduction of beach width affects the distribution of ground prowling insects. The narrower beaches received more environmental impacts from the sea, and it also lead to the loss of habitat of them and vegetation. In addition, Gonocephalum (Gonocephalum) recticolle and Meristhus (Sulcimerus) niponensis were found only in the vicinity of the seawalls in Yuriage, the widest beach (about 200 m width) of all five sites. At other sites, their habitat may have been lost due to the construction of seawalls., 26022293, [International presentation]

Portland, Oregon, USA, This presentation introduces the impact of off-road vehicles (ORVs) on coastal dune ecosystems, and discusses a way to conserve these natural resources along the Ishikari Coast, Japan, as a future landscape conservation model based on increasing ecosystem services to maximize coastal resilience. Coastal dunes are endangered landscapes in Japan because of landfill activities, urban development, sea wall construction for erosion control, "black pine forest" plantations as bio-shields, and intensive recreational use. Although the Ishikari Coast is adjacent to Sapporo, a metropolis of 2.2 million inhabitants, there are still wide dunes and natural forests. However, in spite of the rarity of dunes, the Ishikari Coast has not been protected and has been disturbed by ORV driving since the 1980's. A series of field surveys, using natural and social scientific approaches, were conducted along the Ishikari Coast and have identified impacts of ORV driving on dune habitats (e.g., dune vegetation and wolf spiders) and informed the development of an appropriate and responsive management strategy (e.g., zoning of protection areas and within seasons) to these threats. In addition, the management plan calls for increasing awareness to the importance of dune landscapes through developing clear interpretations and explanations to visitors. Increasing resilience of coastal areas is achieved through the proposed management plan and increasing awareness to the public at large., [Invited], [International presentation]

Collaboration with citizens is becoming essential for maintaining and managing public green spaces. Citizen groups and participants are aging, and securing human resources has become an issue. This study conducted a questionnaire survey and group interview surveys on collaboration with citizens in natural and urban parks.
We conducted case studies in the management of mountainous areas, grasslands, coastal areas, forests, and urban flower beds and parks. We identified factors that promote or discourage the sustainability of activities, such as the structure of collaboration, the role of intermediate support organizations, and their role in local communities and environmental conservation.

With special attention to the cultural services urban green space bring out, we attempted to clarify the use of green spaces and its transition in Japan, China and Indonesia, from the viewpoint of nature experience.
In contrast to Japan where many cities studied were more mature, in Xining, Qinghai Province, which is experiencing a rapid urbanization, we were able to observe transitions in nature experience for individual ethnic groups. We also studied parks, green pedestrian paths and waterways in Sapporo City, Nerima-ku, Edogawa-ku, Saitama Prefecture and Yokohama City in Japan. In Indonesia, we conducted a research on the awareness of scenery, traditional squares and green spaces. From the outcomes of the research, we have gained new insight into open space planning methods for improving the attractiveness of urban areas more effectively as well as assuring urban greenery in terms of quantity.

In this study, I extracted the resources which should have evaluated from questionaire survey and a field work for the purpose of suggesting a sustainable coastal management system of the sandy beach. As a result, the recognition about the ecosystem services of coastal dunes, e.g. regulation services as the natural dike and supporting services as habitat for wild life, and it was shown that the visualization of these invisible functions was important. For the sustainable coastal management system of the sandy beach, possibility of the management by a new public, which were consisted by various subjects about shore, was shown.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the impact of recreational use on coastal dune and the suitable management method for sustainable recreational use on coastal area. The result showed that the conservation method for coastal vegetation was depended on the goal of future environment because of the delicate balance of coastal dune environment. In addition, the definition of "natural coast" area was not represented the natural sandy coastal environment, so we should consider about the whole coastal environment from the beach to the coastal forest, through the dune area.
