Takanori Sato was born in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1992. He received his Ph.D. degree in the field of media and network technologies from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2018. He was a Research Fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) from 2017 to 2019. In 2019, he moved to University of Hyogo as an assistant professor. He is currently an associate professor in Hokkaido University. His research interests include the theoretical and numerical studies of optical fibers and photonic circuits using the coupled mode theory and the finite element method. He is a member of the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE), the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Optica (formerly OSA). He is also a chair in IEEE Sapporo Young Professionals (YP) Affinity Group.

研究論文(学術雑誌), We designed a mode equalizer to handle mode-dependent loss (MDL) in mode division multiplexing systems. The proposed equalizer is based on a step-index long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and designed to attenuate the LP01 core mode while providing high transmission of the LP11 core mode. For a practical fiber design, we assumed a coating material with a higher refractive index than the cladding. Consequently, numerous leaky cladding modes should be analyzed. 英語, 研究論文(学術雑誌), Small silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based tunable O-band TE0-TE1 and TE0-TE2 mode multiplexers (MUXs) based on phase-mismatched asymmetric directional couplers (ADCs) are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. We designed ADCs with an intentionally phase-mismatched coupling region to suppress wavelength dependence and improve fabrication error tolerance. The fabricated O-band TE0-TE2 mode MUX can maintain more than −0.71dB transmission by heating. Moreover, we proposed three-section tapered ADCs (3STADCs) divided into three regions. We theoretically show that the TE0-TE1 and TE0-TE2 mode MUXs based on the 3STADC have more than −0.28dB and −0.36dB transmission within ±10nm waveguide width fabrication error, respectively. - High tolerant design of athermal Si wavelength filter using Mach–Zehnder interferometer

A design method for the athermal Mach–Zehnder wavelength filter, which is available in the Si-on-insulator platform, is proposed. We can obtain much higher fabrication-tolerant characteristics by introducing a condition, minimizing the dependence of the waveguide width on the athermal condition, to the wavelength filter design. Our design has the arm waveguides divided into four sections, and each section is appropriately designed to exploit athermal characteristics. We also reveal the relationship between the arm length (corresponding to the footprint) and the waveguide width (relating to the propagation loss) from the formularized equations for the wavelength filter design. One example of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer filter designed by the proposed method has lower spectral shift characteristics less than 1 pm K−1 entire C band even if the waveguide width errors occur, compared with the conventional design. - Strategies for DOA-DNN estimation accuracy improvement at low and high SNRs

研究論文(学術雑誌), We present a low-loss and compact silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) mode-dependent loss (MDL) equalizer for three-mode transmission with a variable range of 2.5 dB. The proposed device utilizes a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure to selectively attenuate the LP01 mode while maintaining low insertion loss for the LP11a,b modes. We demonstrate that the device effectively reduces differential modal gain (DMG) in a three-mode transmission system. Additionally, we successfully equalize the pump-power dependence of the DMG in a two-LP mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to less than 0.5 dB over the entire C-band. We also show that the variable range has a tradeoff relationship with the wavelength bandwidth, where too large a variable range results in non-negligible wavelength dependencies. Consequently, fixed equalizers are advantageous when large MDL compensation is required, while variable equalizers are effective for fine-tuning MDL of less than 1.2 dB. - Deep Neural Networks Based End-to-End DOA Estimation System

英語, 研究論文(学術雑誌), Ultracompact mode multiplexers based on mosaic structure for various wavelength bands designed by Bayesian technique are investigated. C-, O-, and C + O band, TE0-TE1 2-mode multiplexers can be designed with the same footprint, by only changing the mosaic-pattern, showing the great flexibility of mosaic-based devices. Bayesian direct binary search method is used for the design, and it is demonstrated that the Bayesian technique is superior to conventional design method in terms of the best-structure search for the same number of iterations. The designed devices are fabricated for Si-waveguide platform, and the proof-of-concept results are obtained. 日本語, 実用化に向けて研究が行われている第六世代移動通信(6G)においては,広帯域伝送が可能な100~300 GHzのサブテラヘルツ帯を利用することが想定されている.サブテラヘルツ帯は周波数が高いため,端末や周囲散乱体の移動速度が同じでもチャネルの変動が大きくなるが,未来の時刻におけるチャネルを予測することによってこの問題を軽減することが期待される.サブテラヘルツ帯ではマルチパス数が極めて少ないため,それらを分離して,各マルチパスの,未来の時刻における複素振幅の予測を行った後に再合成する手法(SOS法)が有効に機能すると考えられる.本論文では,ハイブリッド・ビームフォーミング構成の基地局を想定し,各サブアレーに入射するマルチパスを圧縮センシングアルゴリズムの一つであるFISTAにより遅延領域で分離を行うことで,チャネルを予測する手法を提案する.シミュレーションの結果,サブテラヘルツ帯ではチャネル予測が良好に機能し,正規化平均2乗誤差を-20 dB~-30 dB程度に抑えられることが示された. - Investigation of heterogeneous step-index 2LP-mode multi-core fibers based on a two-ring layout with standard cladding diameter

The 6-mode multiplexer has transmission greater than -0.19 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm for the E11, E21, E12, E22, E31, and E13 modes. The 10-mode multiplexer is designed to only excite selected modes (E11, E21, E12, E22, E31, E13, E32, E23, E41, and E14 modes), used for fiber transmission. We found a structure that minimizes DMD while maintaining the low loss property of the pure silica core. Numerical results show that the proposed filter has a temperature dependence low enough for use in dense wavelength division multiplexing systems. 研究論文(学術雑誌), The previous PLC E31 and E13 mode converters employ linear tapered structures to fulfill the adiabatic coupling condition and achieve a high mode conversion efficiency, which requires long taper lengths. In this paper, we propose two types of PLC tapered structures that can be applied in different scenarios using fast quasiadiabatic dynamics. These structures enable mode conversions of E31-E13 modes, as well as E31-LP02 and E13LP21b modes, respectively. The E31-E13 mode converter can be reduced from the previous three-stage linear taper of 12000 µm to approximately 4000 µm in length. Similarly, the E31-LP02, E13-LP21b mode converter can be reduced from the previous two-stage linear taper of over 6000 µm to approximately 4000 µm in length. - A near-optimal stochastic MIMO signal detection with a mixture of t-distribution prior.

英語, A sub-Terahertz band is envisioned to play a great role in 6G to achieve extreme high data-rate communication. In addition to very wide band transmission, we need spatial multiplexing using a hybrid MIMO system. A recently presented paper, however, reveals that the number of observed multipath components in a sub-Terahertz band is very few in indoor environments. A channel with few multipath components is called sparse. The number of layers (streams), i.e. multiplexing gain in a MIMO system does not exceed the number of multipaths. The sparsity may restrict the spatial multiplexing gain of sub-Terahertz systems, and the poor multiplexing gain may limit the data rate of communication systems. This paper describes fundamental considerations on sub-Terahertz MIMO spatial multiplexing in indoor environments. We examined how we should steer analog beams to multipath components to achieve higher channel capacity. Furthermore, for different beam allocation schemes, we investigated eigenvalue distributions of a channel Gram matrix, power allocation to each layer, and correlations between analog beams. 英語, 研究論文(国際会議プロシーディングス), We designed and evaluated 1×2 and 2×2 optical couplers using multimode interference (MMI) optical waveguides of Ti-diffused LiNbO3. A Mach-Zehnder electrooptic modulator (MZM) designed using those two MMI couplers as an optical power splitter and combiner was fabricated. Optical intensity modulation was achieved with a 50 dB extinction ratio. And the experimental results showed that the 2 ×2 MMI optical coupler could provide nearly equal power division with a 90° phase difference as a 90° hybrid. Next, we applied the MZM structure to the single sideband (SSB) modulation. 10 GHz microwave signals of 90° phase difference were fed to the modulation electrodes on the two arms of the MZM. 研究論文(学術雑誌), We propose two types of mosaic-based 3-dB couplers for wavelengths around 2.1 µm. For type I, the proposed device provides excess loss of dB and imbalance of over the wavelength range from 2.06 to 2.14 µm. Compared with the standard multimode-interference-based 3-dB coupler, the imbalance is improved by . For type II, coupling length in the multimode-interference region is about three times shorter than the one based on multimode-interference theory. It provides excess loss of and imbalance of over the wavelength range from 2.06 to 2.14 µm. Both proposed devices show high fabrication tolerance to hole diameter variation. Especially for type II, the fabrication-tolerant direct binary search was effective to obtain such a structure. A novel direct-binary-search algorithm for the design of fabrication-tolerant photonic-crystal-like subwavelength structures is proposed. In the proposed method, structures based on holes with different diameters are considered to enhance the device performance under diameter variation. The usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated through the design of a fabrication-tolerant four-mode waveguide crossing in the 2 μm waveband. With the proposed method, the transmission of TE3 mode is increased by 4.9% (for diameter of 130 nm) and 9.5% (for diameter of 150 nm) on average of 15 samples, compared with the conventional direct-binary-search method. The designed device provides insertion losses of <0.87 dB and crosstalks of <−24 dB in spite of diameter variations of ±10 nm from the ideal diameter. - Silica-PLC based mode-dependent-loss equalizer for two LP mode transmission

研究論文(国際会議プロシーディングス), Direction of arrival (DoA) estimation is a technique used in, for instance, radar systems, source localization, and wireless channel estimation, and improving its accuracy is becoming more important as its applications expand. In previous works, we verified that deep neural networks (DNN) trained offline are a viable tool for achieving great on-grid DoA estimation performance, even compared to the traditional root multiple signal classification (root-MUSIC) algorithm. Moreover, we separately proposed the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based DNN selection method in order to fully leverage the DNN learning potential at specific SNRs; and the superposition of two DNNs (staggered DNNs) in order to overcome the estimation failure caused by incident radio waves at the grid border. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end DoA estimation system, which consists of three modules: DoA, SNR and source number estimators. Here, we expand the performance of the DoA estimator module by presenting a new algorithm more efficient in detecting DoA from the DNN output, and by using the combination of the two previously mentioned methods: SNR-based DNN selection and staggered DNNs. In this paper, we present downlink channel acquisition with a few pilot symbols. At a base station (BS), we estimate delays and angles-of-arrival (AOAs) of multipath components using a compressed sensing technique. The BS transmits pilot symbols from a single antenna or two, and user equipment (UE) feeds back the downlink channels to the BS. Using the delays, AOAs, and the downlink channels fed back from the UE, we estimate all the remaining downlink channels. 本研究では、既存の電子デバイス性能の限界を突破し得る要素技術の1つとして「光演算プロセッサ」に着目し、光で演算を行う行列積演算回路と光全加算器の設計・開発に取り組んできた。
令和元年度は初期検討として、簡易な構造により素子を小型化できるシリコンリング共振器を用いた行列積演算回路を設計した。3×3ユニタリ行列積演算が可能であることを示し、数値解析結果より良好な特性が得られることを確認した。一般的なシリコンリング共振器では、1つのリングにバス導波路とアクセス導波路を接続するのに対して、2つのリングを結合させたシリコンリング共振器を用いることで、透過帯域をフラットにするだけではなく、多入力・多出力の光配線レイアウトの簡素化に成功している。また、直線導波路に対して熱や電圧を加えるタイプの位相シフタやマッハツェンダ干渉計を用いた従来のデバイスよりも、1/10から1/100程度まで小型化可能であることを明らかにした。一般に、回路構成に共振器を用いることにより、デバイスサイズと遅延のトレードオフが生じることが問題視されているが、Q値が800程度のゆるやかな共振ピークを持つリング共振器を2段に結合した場合、共振器通過時の遅延(出力が定常状態となるまでの時間)が5ps程度となり、実用上問題ないことを確認した。さらに、提案構造に用いられているシリコンリング共振器は、光全加算器の構成にも取り入れることが可能であり、現在その設計に取りかかっている。

光通信機器における信号処理を全て光信号で行う「全光信号処理」を実現する全光デバイスは、デバイスの消費電力を3桁程度削減可能であるものとして期待されている。これまで、2010年には全光スイッチ、2012年には全光メモリが実験的に確認されたことで,世界的な注目を集めてきたが、光整流ダイオード(全光ダイオード)については、順方向透過率や整流特性、波長特性が乏しく、未だ実現が困難な状況である。そこで本研究では、優れた整流特性および高い実現可能性を有する全光ダイオードを設計開発することを目的として、フォトニック結晶共振器を用いたシリコン全光ダイオードの研究を進めてきた。
前年度までに、従来報告されてきた全光ダイオードと比較して、より実現性の高く、高い透過特性および整流特性を有するダイオードが実現可能であることを理論的に確認した。
2年目となる本年度は、前年度設計した全光ダイオードを作製し、測定実験を行う予定であったが、フォトニック結晶デバイスを設計通りに作製することができず、ダイオード動作の実験実証までには至らなかった。具体的には、フォトニック結晶光共振器の入出力導波路部分に問題があり、空孔間隔や、曲げ導波路の配置を工夫して、シミュレーション通りの実験測定結果が得られない問題を回避した。現在、改めて設計デバイスのチップ作製を行っている最中であり、実際に実験測定のフェーズに入るのは次年度以降となる。
