Japanese, Scientific journal,We can regard Russell's theory of classes in The Principles of Mathematics as a dual theory of classes based upon the distinction between a class as one and a class as many. In this paper, I shall show the following (A)-(D) from the viewpoint of how Russell dealt in the Principles with the paradox that bears his own name. (A) The dual theory of classes is one that deserves serious considerations. (B) Russell offered measures against the paradox other than the simple theory of types developed in an appendix to the Principles. (C) Russell avoided the paradox without forbidding self-memberships of classes in general. (D) Though introducing a hierarchy of types into pseudo-entities is a very important step to Russell's later theories (e.g., the substitutional theory and the ramified theory of types), we can find this strategy already in the Principles.

Japanese, Scientific journal, One of alleged problems of Wittgenstein's Tractatus logico-philosophicus (TLP) is that we could give no example of its basic concepts such as elementary propositions, names, states of affairs, simple objects, and so on. The problem is so serious, because it means that the whole theoretical system of TLP could have no applicability. Noya, in his recent book on TLP, proposes to regard ordinary objects familiar to us in our daily life, such as persons, dogs, mountains, rock bands, and so on, as examples of simple objects of TLP. But, I think, we cannot interpret TLP in the way his proposal suggests. In this paper I shall show there is no sense in which we can say ordinary objects are simple objects of TLP. There are two main reasons. One concerns TLP's requirement of logical independency of elementary propositions, and the other concerns TLP's requirement that simple objects should exist independently of what is the case. - The Color-Exclusion Problem Revisited

Japanese, Scientific journal, The metaphysics of "simple" objects and the syntactic theory of "expressions (Ausdrücke)" can be seen as theoretical foundations of Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logicophilosophicus. I shall show in this paper how these two doctrines result from his struggling with Russell's theory of types, and establish the early Wittgenstein's basic idea that structural (formal) features of language mirror structural (formal) features of the world. In order to do so, I will trace the basic line of Wittgenstein's thought back to the pre-Tractatus period. - Pictures and Forms in Wittgenstein's Tractatus

In the research of ethics of our country in recent years, there remarkably seems to be a tendency to a self-closing special differentiation in new areas of investigations of bioethics, environmental ethics, information ethics, and engineering and techno ethics, etc. Against such tendency, the purpose of our project is to analyze various basic concepts of each field of applied ethics, including various ethical arguments based on those concepts there, from a normative-ethical and meta-ethical viewpoint. And then, based on that analysis, we attempt to redefine those concepts.
In the last year of our project, we had project meetings for reading research papers by investigators of our project several times and mutual criticism of individual research of each investigator had been held. In addition, inviting Prof. Feenberg (Simon Fraser university), we held the international symposium last October entitled, "Democratizing Technology : Ethics and Cultural Values in Technology".
Our research project was able to obtain much more result of the research than anticipated by receiving ardent cooperation with investigators and research cooperators for these two years. Moreover, we held some joint research meetings and lectures co-hosted by Nobuyuki Iida(professor of Teikyo Heisei University) and Kyoto Research Group of Bioethics. We enormously benefited from those joint programs, in the point of interaction with many researchers at various universities and in that of qualitative improvement of the content of our research. It is needless to say that those joint activities reflect in the result of our project.
