Japanese, Scientific journal, This paper discusses the causes of the uneasiness and safety feelings of the residents hit by a natural disaster. For a case study of a rural community with isolation possibility, we interviewed residents in Hirai area ofKozagawa town, Wakayama prefecture about the uneasiness and safety feelings they felt during the typhoonNo.12 (2011). As a result, we considered the sense of security and the readiness for disaster were formed by thereal relationships of actual everyday routine actions. Thus we found that this balance of uneasiness and safetyfeelings are very unique to this rural community. - The relationships between feeding-group size and feeding rate vary from positive to negative with characteristics of food items in wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata).

Behaviour, 150, 2, 175, 197, Brill, 2013, [Peer-reviewed]
English, Scientific journal, To understand the costs and benefits of group-living, it is important to clarify the impacts of other individuals on foraging success. Previous studies on group-living primates have focused on the relationship between feeding-group size and feeding rate in food patches, and have exhibited inconsistent results, showing positive, neutral, or negative relationships. The relationship realized will depend on the balance of positive and negative impacts of co-feeding on feeding rate. The intensity of negative impacts (i.e., feeding competition) may vary with some characteristics of food items such as (1) patch size, (2) within-patch food density, (3) within-patch distribution pattern of food, (4) the abundance and (5) distribution pattern of within-habitat food trees, and (6) the relative energy content among available food items. Thus, the balance of positive and negative impacts of co-feeding, and ultimately the relationship between feeding-group size and feeding rate, is expected to change with characteristics of food items. In this study of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), the relationship between feeding-group size and feeding rate, and the above six characteristics of 12 main food items were assessed over six seasons. Positive, neutral, or negative relationships between feeding-group size and feeding rate were detected among these food items. Positive relationships were consistently associated with within-patch food density; higher food density within food patches was likely to lead to positive relationships. Thus, various relationships between feeding-group size and feeding rate should be attributed to these specific characteristics of food items, which alter the degree of feeding competition. - Strategic schema for the adaptive management of wild deer

English, We examined the ranging behaviors of three male Japanese sika deer Cervus nippon yesoensis in western Hokkaido (42°N, 141°E), Japan, from 2003 to 2009. All three deer exhibited similar patterns of long-distance movements in the autumn. They left residence areas between 17 September and 16 October during the rutting season. Their direction of movement appeared to be eastward, and total movement distances ranged from 7 to 26 km. The males tended to return to their residence areas between 10 November and 27 January. - Food habits of Japanese deer in an evergreen forest: Litter-feeding deer

Distribution of Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon centralis) was surveyed in the Wakayama Experimental Forest of Hokkaido University (ca. 430ha) located in southern Kii Peninsula, Japan. Total 45 belt transects (4×50 m) were established in the forest, and we counted fecal pellet groups within the belts in spring of 2009. Then, deer density distribution in the forest was estimated from pellet group density at each belt by spatial interpolation using Kriging method. Then, we found three "hot spots" of deer density in the forest. - Research Bulletins of the Hokkaido University Forests

Japanese, Scientific journal - Preliminary Survey of Relative Group Density of Macaca fuscata yakui in Relation to Logging History at Seven Sites in Yakushima, Japan

Primate Res., 10, 2, 85, 93, Primate Society of Japan, 1994, [Peer-reviewed]
The forest habitat of the Yakushima macaque varies in quality as a result of logging, secondary growth and conifer plantations. A preliminary survey was made of macaque populations at 7 sites representing a range of habitat quality. All sites were located at between 300 and 800m asl, in the warm temperate broad-leaved forest zone in northwest Yakushima (30°N, 131°E), Japan. The extent of logging within a 1km2 plot at each site was assessed using image analysis of forestry maps. The proportion of the plot which had been logged within the previous 25 years ranged from 0 to about 68%, within 50 years from 0 to 79%, and within 75 years from 28 to 79%. Observations, vocalisations and droppings of macaques were recorded for a total of 284hr along census trails of between 2.2 and 3.5km. This included four 'full' days (7.5-8.5hr) for each site, which were used for the analyses. Macaques were found at all sites. The mean number of groups seen or heard ranged from 0.11 to 0.82/km/day, and was positively correlated (rs=0.64) with the proportion of mature forest at each site. There was no clear correlation between the mean detection rate of groups and the rate at which droppings were found. The latter may be a less accurate measure of relative group density in a short-term survey. Although Yakushima macaques do utilise areas within 25 years of heavy logging, more groups were found in areas where logging was less recent and/or less extensive. A long-term survey is now underway which will assess the details of this relationship, the influence of forestry plantations, and seasonal variation in use of different habitat types. - Influences of Seibu Road on the World Heritage Forest of Yakushima Island, Japan

Primate Res., 10, 1, 41, 47, Primate Society of Japan, 1994, [Peer-reviewed]
The area of World Heritage in the northwest of Yakushima is the only part of the island where natural vegetation still extends to the coast. The influence of the Seibu Road (19.3km) on this forest was investigated using three indicators. The first was physical discontinuity of the forest (P), which was determined from the lengths of artificial slopes above and below the road. The second was scenery disturbance (S), which was determined from the presence or absence of trees beside the road. The third was vegetational disturbance (V), which was determined from the number of invader plant species found alongside the road.
In section of the road where has been relatively little disturbance the tree tops meet to form a "Green Tunnel". The occurrence of such "Green Tunnel" sections was recorded continuously along the road.
Discontinuity of the forest (P) was significant positively correlated with both scenery disturbance (S) and vegetational disturbance (V), such that section of the road which have been most developed have the least roadside trees and the greatest number of invader plant species. "Green Tunnel" existed along only one fourth of the whole length of the road and along only one third of the road within the World Heritage forest. Almost all of "Green Tunnel" sections were found in the Hanyama and Kawahara areas, where all three indicators also showed the low disturbance.
These results suggested that, in order to conserve the natural environment of the World Heritage forest, the construction of artificial slopes above and blow the road should be avoided as far as possible. - Preliminary Research of Wild Golden Monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellanae roxellanae) in Qingling Mountains, China

Two groups of wild golden monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellanae roxellanae) were observed in the Qingling Mountains, China from November to December, 1989. Total observation time for the groups was about 18 hours in 8 days.
The monkeys inhabited mixed forest of deciduous and coniferous trees at between 1900m and 2300m above sea level. All age-sex classes of monkeys were found in the two groups. Group-A consisted of at least 21 members and group-B had at least 43 members. They traveled about 1km in a day. Most activities of the monkeys occurred in the trees. Forty three percent of their locomotion was quadpedal, 33% consisted of leaping and jumping, and 24% of brachiation. They fed on the seeds of Pinus sp. and the buds and barks of deciduous trees such as Acer sp. They made various types of vocalization mainly when they fed and moved around. A few occurrences of social grooming and copulation were observed during the study period. - Provisioned Monkeys among Wild Population of Japanese Macaques in Yakushima Island

This is the first attempt to evaluate the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on wildlife from multiple aspects. We chose two artificial disturbed sites (OK and YH: higher hunting pressure and traffic volume, and more leisure visitors) and one far less disturbed site (SB in Natural World Heritage Area), and compared infection of parasites (protozoa and helminth), stress hormone (cortisol), structure of bacterial flora in feces, and quality of foods of wild Japanese sika deer in Yakushima. Protozoa infection rate was higher in OK site and stress hormone concentration was higher in YH site than SB site. Whereas, infection of helminth, the bacterial flora and quality of foods were not different among the three sites. In recent years, deer population density in less disturbed site (SB) was rapidly decreasing probably by natural environmental factors. Natural stressors in SB site might obscure differences in the aspects relating anthropogenic impacts on wild deer with disturbed sites.

Our study will understand the non-linear responses (e.g., synergistic effect, regime shift) of forest ecosystems to multiple factors associated with climate changes. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and magnitude of sudden natural disturbances (e.g., typhoons) and warming. The objectives of this study are: 1) How does the combined effect of typhoon disturbance and warming affect the community structure and the vertical structure of the warm temperate forests (laurel forests) on the Kii Peninsula? 2) What kind of response (linear or non-linear) does biodiversity (e.g., trees, insect herbivores) and ecosystem functions respond to the combined effect? We used field manipulations at the stand level. Although the survey did not be conducted sufficiently due to the flooding damage caused by the typhoon heavy rain, the experimental treatments of soil warming and the forest canopy gap and the pre-experimental survey were carried out.

We evaluated (1) sodium availability in the forests, (2) sodium content of foods of wild herbivorous animals and (3) aldosterone (a hormone which enhances reabsorption of sodium from urine) level of wild and captive herbivorous animals. Sodium content of live leaves was higher in Yakushima highland and lowland (distance from the seas: 100 m~7 km) than in mainland forests (>20 km). Some foods eaten by herbivorous animals contained more sodium than others. Captive animals and wild herbivorous animals habitually contacting with sea water showed higher concentration of fecal aldosterone than other wild populations.

The western region on Yakushima Island is designated as world heritage sites and are strictly protected. Recently, sika deer increased their density rapidly and give damage to vegetation. In this area, we estimated the density of deer and Japanese monkeys, using an automatic cameras. The deer density was very high in the secondary forests that had been logged before 1960s, but was less than half in the primary forest. On the other hand, the monkeys density was similarly high in both the primary and secondary forests, which was different from the deer.

We researched factors influencing intensities of crop damages by wildlife in two villages in Yakushima, southern Japan. The damage intensity by deer was positively influenced by area of the farm, and total area of broad leaved forests and negatively influenced by total length of stockade fences within 800m from the farm. The damage intensity by monkeys was negatively influenced by total farm areas within 200m from the farm, and that by Brown-eared Bulbul was positively influenced by total length of stockade fences within 200m from the farm. On the other hand, population densities of these wildlife species did not have significant positive effects on their damage intensities.

We compared calcium concentration of leaf litters, soils, stream water and stream benthic and soil invertebrates sampled at nine sites in catchments composed of cedar plantations, evergreen broadleaved forest and clear-cut areas. In addition, we placed a kind of crustacean in cages in the nine streams and after one month surveyed the number of surviving individuals. Calcium concentration in stream water and soil, and the density and survival of the dominant crustacean were significantly higher at sites dominated by Japanese cedar compared with other forest types. Furthermore, invertebrate community composition was correlated with total calcium and nitrate in stream water, indicating that terrestrial vegetation can affect stream invertebrate communities, particularly crustaceans.

We have conducted research focusing on biodiversity inventory and ecological processes surrounding oak (Quercus spp.) trees to understand relationships between biodiversity and ecological functions in a cool-temperate forest ecosystem.
For the biodiversity inventory, we investigated species composition and spatio-temporal distribution of herbivores, predators, and decomposers on and around oak trees. Then, we revealed community structures of aphids, leaf miners, above-ground-beetles, earthworms, lepidopteran larvae, mites, and psocids separately. In addition, we examined arthropod communities in special microhabitats such as under tree barks and within acorns. Furthermore, we censused population dynamics of rodents, deers, and other middle-size mammals.
For ecological aspects, we revealed, by field experimental methods, a part of interactive processes between some components of forest ecosystem. Concerning interactions between environment, oak trees and herbivores, we found that experimental fertilization and cutting of surrounding trees both improved the quality of oak leaves, which enhanced the herbivory. There was a difference in the leaf quality between the canopy and the lower stratum, with the corresponding difference in the species composition of lepidopteran larvae. As another aspect of leaf characteristics, the difference in the genetic constitution of oak trees affected the diversity of the herbivore community. For the decomposition system, we found that removal of earthworms increased the amount of leaf litter deposit, and that mixing the leaf litter of Quercus crispula with Magnolia kobus var. borealis enhanced the degradation rate.
These results have been publicized on the Internet, and moreover, we have developed and disclosed the "Comprehensive biological information database system", which could support biodiversity studies. This relational database system consists of the general classification system applicable for any taxonomic group (Biological Classification and Identification System : BioCIS), the general table-structure database system, and the general hierarchical-structure database system.
