    Spanish, Castilian, Scientific journal, <p>Este artículo considera el estado actual de la Open University del Reino Unido (UKOU) y las implicaciones para la evolución de la educación superior, sea en instituciones abiertas o tradicionales. A pesar de que han pasado 50 años desde el establecimiento de UKOU, la primera universidad abierta, tales instituciones parecen estar perdiendo terreno, especialmente porque se enfrentan a desafíos para crear una identidad clara para sí mismas. Por definición, se les ha distinguido de las universidades tradicionales por ofrecer tanto acceso abierto como admisión abierta. Sin embargo, algunos casos de acceso abierto (es decir, enseñanza a distancia a través de la adopción de diversas tecnologías) se han dado en China, Sudáfrica, la URSS y Estados Unidos. Aun así, la introducción de políticas de admisión abierta puede considerarse una característica central de las universidades abiertas. Dichas políticas han sido criticadas por generar la así llamada “puerta giratoria”, donde los estudiantes reprueban casi de inmediato. Para contrarrestarlo, la UKOU desarrolló un sistema particular de aseguramiento de calidad, que le permitió ser una institución reconocida de educación superior. Específicamente, establecieron redes regionales con responsabilidades compartidas para ofrecer todos los elementos que integran a una universidad, incluyendo oficinas centrales y regionales e incluso espacio para estudiantes. Esta forma de universidad en red diferencia a las universidades abiertas de las que siguen un modelo tradicional y constituye una característica distintiva de este tipo de educación.</p>
