    Scientific journal, Seismic isolation is widely used in several countries, and the number of seismically isolated buildings has increased rapidly in recent decades. Seismic isolation extends the natural period of a building to decrease the absolute acceleration and seismic force. As there is a trade-off between the absolute acceleration and displacement, a soft layer results in a large displacement for a large seismic wave, but the hard one causes the large absolute acceleration even for a small seismic wave. The restoring force of a Duffing spring is given by the third and first orders of the displacement. This spring has been applied to protect a building from large earthquake waves. However, the influence of the coefficient of the Duffing spring that determines the dynamic characteristics of the system has not been clarified. Thus, a used Duffing spring may not be appropriate for seismic resistance. Moreover, most studies are based on analytical methods, and the advantages of the Duffing isolation have not been verified in an actual system. To address these problems, this paper reveals the influence of the coefficient of the Duffing spring on structural responses to seismic waves. Moreover, this paper devised a way to implement a Duffing spring for seismic isolation and carried out experiments to verify the validity in actual systems. The experimental results presented that the Duffing spring was effective in protecting a building in actual systems.

    English, Scientific journal, To clarify the effectiveness of the distributed lead-core configurations of LRB, real-scale dynamic loading experiments and heat-mechanics interaction analysis were carried out. Experiments and analyses revealed that the energy absorption performance tends to decline as the diameter of the lead core becomes larger, and that the multi-core LRB effectively restrains such decline in performance. In order to analyze a multi-core LRB, it is necessary to use a three-dimensional model, but this study reveals that analysis by CFS or FDM with a two-dimensional model is sufficiently accurate and is more conveniently.

    English, Scientific journal, The purpose of this study is to clarify strength degradation in LRB in the event of a long-duration earthquake. Obtained from studying cyclic loading tests provide the following conclusions. [1] The strain, strain rate and temperature dependency of the intercept force obtained from rubber bearing (RB) tests were clarified, and equations were proposed. [2] By subtracting the RB intercept force from the yielding force of the LRB, the relationship between temperature and yielding stress of lead plug was obtained, and equations were proposed. [3] The proposed equations could successfully predict the mechanical behavior and the change of temperature of LRB.

  • AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON PRACTICAL USE OF A LEAD RUBBER BEARING WITH FAIL-SAFE MECHANISM

    Japanese, Scientific journal, The authors have been developing a new seismic isolation bearing, which consists of a lead rubber bearing (LRB) and a slider bearing as a fail-safe (FS) mechanism in series. The bearing called “FSLRB” behaves as a general LRB which is just friction connected to the building structure at either of upper or lower end, when subjected to design level earthquakes or smaller, while the sliding behavior keeps LRB away from giving excessive hardening and shear break in severe earthquakes beyond expectations. Hence, FSLRB has much higher seismic safety compared to general isolation bearings including conventional LRBs. In this paper, dynamic and quasi-static horizontal loading tests under constant or varying compressive loadings for several kinds of scaled and full-scale FSLRB specimens are conducted, to evaluate the effect of bi-directional excitations on additional torsion in the LRB part and changes in friction properties in the slider part. Ultimate performance limit of a full-scale bearing is also investigated under extremely high surface pressures beyond expectations.
     Dynamic loading tests of two types of □-200mm scaled specimens, each has different second shape factor in the LRB part, make clear that there is no apparent difference in friction properties between uni-directional and bi-directional excitations, and no damage to the LRB part due to the torsional behavior in bi-directional excitation, as far as the bearing is applied under a reasonable surface pressure around 10 N/mm2. Bi-directional dynamic loading tests of a □-900mm full-scale specimen show that there is no significant scale-effect between the full-scale FSLRB and the □-200mm scaled one on both the torsional behavior of the LRB part and friction properties of the slider part. Uni-directional dynamic loading tests of □-600mm full-scale specimens indicate that dynamic and static friction coefficients have quite low velocity dependence in reasonable sliding speed expected in the practical use. Finally, uni-directional quasi-static loading tests of □-600mm specimens show that the bearing should be applied under surface pressure of 20 N/mm2 or lower, to give a well-ordered tri-linear hysteresis curve without causing any unexpected incidents such as partial uplift of the slider part and buckling or shear break of the LRB part.
     Furthermore, surface pressure dependence of dynamic and static friction coefficients are inductively estimated applying all the data obtained in the series of the research, including the test results of □-60mm scaled slider, □-414mm scaled FSLRB and □-900mm full-scale FSLRB introduced in the authors’ preceding paper. The data indicate that both dynamic and static friction coefficients are highly affected by the dimensions of each FSLRB, those are the second shape factor of the LRB part and out-of-plane stiffness of the steel plates between the LRB part and the slider part. By introducing “effective surface pressure” reflecting the effect of the above two dimensions, friction coefficients can be even accurately estimated compared to a conventional method only using mean surface pressure.
     As a conclusion through the series of the loading tests and the considerations mentioned above, the authors think that FSLRB is ready for the practical use in a seismic isolation system with even higher safety margin compared to conventional systems., 11047912

    Japanese, Scientific journal, The main hall of Ohtaniha Hakodatuin, which was completed in 1915, is the oldest temple architecture using reinforced concrete structure in Japan. The temple has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2007. In this paper, structural characteristics of the temple based on previous studies were described. Furthermore, evaluation of vibration behavior of the temple by micro-tremor observation and eigenvalue analysis using numerical 3-D frame models were presented. From the results, natural frequencies of the analytical model with decreased concrete Young's modulus considering aging and construction situation showed a good agreement with the micro-tremor observation results.

    English, Scientific journal, Seismically isolated (SI) buildings are thought to be fragile when subjected to excessive input ground motions beyond design level. The authors have been proposing a new isolation bearing which has much higher seismic safety than conventional bearings. Supporting a superstructure only by the proposed bearings will enable the whole SI building to protect from any structural damage. In this paper, the development process of the proposed bearing including the selection of the most suitable slider material, dynamic loading test of a scaled bearing and quasi-static loading test of a full-scale bearing is mentioned. Preliminary and detailed time history analyses of SI building models are also shown.   • Coupling behavior of shear deformation and end rotation of elastomeric seismic isolation bearings

    English, Scientific journal, This paper presents a mechanical model for predicting the behavior of elastomeric seismic isolation bearings subject to combined end rotations and shear deformation. The mechanical model consists of a series of axial springs at the top, mid-height and bottom of the bearing to vertically reproduce asymmetric bending moment distribution in the bearings. The model can take into account end rotations of the bearing, and the overall rotational stiffness includes the effect of the variation of vertical load on the bearing and the imposed shear deformation. Static bending tests under various combinations of vertical load and shear deformation were performed to identify the mechanical characteristics of bearings. The test results indicate that bearing rotational stiffness increases with increasing vertical load but decreases with increasing shear deformation. Simulation analyses were conducted to validate the new mechanical model. The results of analyses using the new model show very good agreement with experimental observations. A series of seismic response analyses were performed to demonstrate the dynamic behavior of top-of-column isolated structures, a configuration where the end rotations of isolation bearings are typically expected to be larger. The results suggest that the end rotations of elastomeric bearings used in practical top-of-column isolated structures do not reduce the stability limit of isolation system.     English, International conference proceedings, Since seismically isolated (SI) buildings are thought to be fragile when subjected to extreme input ground motions beyond design level, various measures such as shock absorbers on moat walls and stoppers put in isolation level have been developed. Those technologies should be helpful to increase seismic safety margin of SI buildings, while they cannot avoid the damage to moat walls, superstructure, or isolation devices. In this paper, the authors propose a new lead rubber bearing (LRB) which has much higher seismic safety compared to general isolation bearings including conventional LRBs.
     The proposed bearing named “FSLRB” or “Fail-Safe LRB” consists of a conventional LRB and a newly developed slider system in series. Friction factor of the slider system is optimally provided to start sliding just before LRB gives a hardening property with the shear strain of around 250%. Then, the bearing behaves as a general LRB which is just friction connected to the building structure at either of upper or lower end, when subjected to design level earthquakes or smaller, while the sliding behavior keeps LRB away from hardening and shear break in severe earthquakes beyond expectations. Hence, supporting a superstructure only by the proposed bearings will enable the whole SI building to protect from any structural damage regardless of the input ground motion levels. A preliminary time history analysis for two SI building models, one applying only FSLRBs, the other applying only conventional LRBs, shows the advantages of the system with the proposed bearings.
     Realizing the above high seismic performance, firstly the most suitable slider material, which was a certain PTFE, was selected by conducting a series of dynamic loading test for each combination of stainless steel plate (SUS304) and 12 candidate slider materials. A dynamic loading test of a scaled FSLRB applying the selected PTFE showed that the bearing almost behaved as expected in the preliminary time history analysis. Dynamic and static friction factors were evaluated as well as surface pressure and velocity dependence of those two factors were formulated from the test results. Furthermore, a full-scale FSLRB was tested under a rather high compression force with quasi-static horizontal loading, to investigate the maximum allowable conditions regarding surface pressure and the second shape factor of LRB part. Finally, a detailed time history analysis of a FSLRB building model was conducted. As for the analysis model, 256 full-size FSLRBs with the mechanical properties evaluated in the above loading tests supported a deformed nuclear power plant consisted of a reactor building and a turbine building set on a common isolation raft. The analysis result showed that the superstructure remained elastic and the maximum responses were lower than design criteria even when subjected to a long-period ground motion beyond design level. On the other hand, it became clear that both the maximum deformation and residual deformation at isolation level were much larger than conventional LRB building model.
      From the above development and analyses, it can be finally concluded that an SI building applying the proposed bearings can realize much higher seismic safety compared to conventional SI buildings, if only provided a large enough isolation gap considering the maximum considered earthquakes., 11047912

    English, Scientific journal, In the present study, a new analytical model of high-damping rubber bearings (HDRBs) for time-history analysis is proposed. The proposed model is used in the evaluation of elastoplastic and creep-like behavior of HDRBs under bidirectional seismic and strong wind loading. The analytical model was developed by reducing the degrees of freedom of a new type of constitutive law that was proposed by the authors for finite-element analysis of seismic isolation bearings. First, the validity of the proposed model for time-history response analysis was examined through various tests of HDRBs under unidirectional and bidirectional loading. The analytical results agreed well with the test results. Next, wind loading tests were conducted and the reproducibility of creep-like behavior of HDRBs under wind loading was evaluated. The effectiveness of the proposed model was verified by the tests, and the limitations of the applicability of the proposed model were determined. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

    English, Scientific journal, This paper presents an analytical hysteresis model of horizontal force-deformation relationship for lead dampers to evaluate the safety of seismic isolation system exposed to long-period earthquake motion. Dynamic loading tests with full-scale dampers were conducted. Yielding strength of damper declined with increase in accumulative deformation, however, it showed rise up temporarily when deformation amplitude was changed on sinusoidal horizontal loading. The analytical model can consider these features. Horizontal load of the test given response displacement motions at isolation layer obtained by a seismic time-history analysis using long-period earthquake motion was in good agreement with one calculated from the model.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, This paper describes new evaluation formulas of ultimate strength and rotation angle for unbonded post-tensioned precast concrete beams. These formulas are composed by two main variables, one is a reinforcement index(q) and the other is an effective prestressing level (λpe). To evaluate coefficients of the evaluation formulas, we carried out a parametric study with a numerical section analysis model, and obtained regression formulas for the coefficients. By applying the evaluation formulas to the results of parametric study and experiments on the past, we elucidate that the formulas evaluate the ultimate strengths and rotation angles of them accurately.

    Japanese, As a new damper which is suited to seismic retrofit for existing high-rise buildings, the authors have developed a passive variable friction damper (VFD) with displacement dependent damping force characteristics. In the present paper, in order to evaluate the response control effects of high-rise buildings incorporating VFDs, earthquake response analyses were conducted using thirty-story frame structure models with VFDs, with conventional friction dampers, or without dampers. The results indicated that VFDs can mitigate response story shear forces and column axial forces compared with conventional friction dampers.

LRB specimens provided by 7 types small models, which have square and circular shape, varied lead plug diameters, lead plug disposition and rubber layers. RB specimen was provided by square shape without lead plug. In this study it was cleared that brake-shear-strain was not influenced by the cross-section shape, lead plug diameters, and lead plug dispositions. The proposed method employs normalized contour maps of H2 norm (root mean square) or weighted H2 norm of transfer functions of systems. The concept of interval analysis methods is applied to deal with structural uncertainties which are assumed to be bounded. The influence of variations in parameters has been easily evaluated by these contour maps.

The damper was designed to decrease damping force when damper displacement exceeded a predetermined value. Therefore, the damper is ideal for aseismic retrofit of existing skyscraper buildings in preparation for long-period earthquake ground motions expected to occur in the near future. Dynamic loading tests were conducted on a full-scale steel frame with a brace-type variable friction damper to verify the damper performance.     Japanese, Scientific journal, A new hysteresis model for high-damping rubber bearings is proposed, which has been developed based on an elasto-plastic, integraltype deformation history constitutive law. One of the characteristics of the proposed model is the applicability of the same material parameters as the proposed model to finite element method analyses. Firstly, we derive the horizontal biaxial hysteresis model from the elasto-plastic constitutive law. Next, we compare the results of numerical analyses using the proposed hysteresis model with experimental results for tests of high-damping rubber bearings subjected to horizontal biaxial loading, and verify the validity of the proposed model. Lastly, we perform finite element method analyses and numerical analyses using a multi-shear springs model, and the results from each of these cases are compared with results given by the proposed model.

The distribution is applied to a series of axial springs to account for the compressive and bending moduli of the rubber pad. The paper demonstrates thai the series of axial springs with varied modulus distribution has higher ratio of bending stifl'ness to compressive stiffness than the rubber pad. To define the correct ratio of bending stiffness to compressive stiffness, a nonlinear elastic model is provided for the axial springs. To be able to more effectively utilize square bearings for seismic isolation systems, a new mechanical model for predicting the large shear deformation behavior of square elastomeric isolation bearings is presented in this paper. Static loading tests of square lead rubber isolation bearings were performed to investigate the influence of horizontal loading direction and axial load magnitude on bearing behavior. The test results showed that the ultimate behavior is strongly influenced by loading direction, especially under large shear deformation and high axial load. To confirm the validity of the model, analyses are performed of the loading tests of the square lead rubber isolation bearings. The model comprises shear and axial springs and a series of axial springs at the top and bottom boundaries. The properties of elastomeric bearings vary with the imposed vertical load. At large shear deformations, elastomeric bearings exhibit stiffening behavior under low axial stress and buckling under high axial stress. These properties depend on the interaction between the shear and axial forces. The proposed model includes interaction between shear and axial forces, nonlinear hysteresis, and dependence on axial stress. To confirm the validity of the model, analyses are performed for actual static loading tests of lead-rubber isolation bearings. The results of analyses using the new model show very good agreement with the experimental results. Seismic response analyses with the new model are also Conducted to demonstrate the behavior of' isolated buildings under severe earthquake excitations.     English, International conference proceedings, This paper proposes an analytical hysteresis model to predict the small shear strain behavior of high-damping rubber isolation bearings (HDR). The National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) in Tokyo, Japan was seismically upgraded in 1998 with a seismic isolation system. The design analyses for the upgrade utilized an existing hysteresis model for HDR isolation bearings. The model was capable of predicting the nonlinear properties of HDR isolators for deformations expected in large earthquakes. Since the upgrade, the acceleration response of the building has been recorded for a number of small earthquakes. The maximum deformation of the HDR isolators in the small earthquakes was below the strain range for which the hysteresis model had been developed, so the small deformation force-displacement relationships for the isolation system were identified from the observed building acceleration records and the original HDR hysteresis model was extended to cover a broad range of shear strain.

The porperties of seismic isolation devices depend upon the interaction between horizontal and vertical forces acting on the isolator. The actural hysteretic behavior of an isolation bearing under a structure subjected to severe earthwuake shaking is influenced by the variation of vertical load on the islator due to overturing forces. To identify the mechanical charcteristcs of lead-rubber isolators, cyclic shear tests of isolators under varying vetical load were conducted. The authors propose an analytical model for predicting the behavior of islators under varying vertical load conditions. The model can reflect the influence of verying vertical load on islator properties, and thios capability is confirmed by simulation analyses and comparison with the cyclic shear test results. The analytical model is also used to investigate the behavior of lead-rubber isolators under loadings more severe than typical design conditions.

To establish a general understanding of the nonlinear response of seismically isolated structures, this study first investigates the nonlinear response of isolated structures subjected to steady-state harmonic motion and nonlinear transient ground excitation. The response of both viscously damped and hysteretically damped isolation systems is investigated in three phases. Initially, basic insights are gained through simple nonlinear two degrees of freedom (2-DOF) models subjected to harmonic motion of varying frequencies. Next, the transient response analysis of the nonlinear 2-DOF model is investigated for a wide range of isolation system and superstructure properties. The results obtained from both approaches indicate that the yielding behavior of a structure on an isolation system is significantly different from that of the comparable fixed-base structure. Finally, the response of the nonlinear 2-DOF system model is compared with that of a 15-story, three-dimensional model. Based on the results of these analytical investigations, some important considerations for the design of seismically isolated structures are presented. Copyright (C) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Japanese, Prediction technique of strong ground motions has been intensively developed in Japan since the 1995 Hyogo-Ken Nanbu earthquake (M_J 7.3), and it has been applied to the practical prediction for inland earthquakes and plate-boundary earthquakes by Japanese Government. On the other hand, recent earthquakes of the 2001 Geiyo earthquake (M_J 6.4) and the 2004 Mid Niigata prefecture earthquake (M_J 6.8) arose not only requirements of safety of lives and structural elements but also requirements of function of equipments and industrial lines. These requirements are well realized in the performance-based design of structures. Hence, we proposed a method of seismic hazard analysis based on fault rupture scenarios and their occurrence probability for implementation of strong ground motions predicted by fault models in performance-based design of structures.

    Japanese, This paper deals with the large deflection analysis of reinforced concrete slabs considering the effect of bond slip of reinforcement. Johansen's yield-line theory is well known method of calculating the ultimate strength of RC slab. However, it under-estimates the ultimate strength of slabs which have fixed edges because of the membrane stress. In order to take it into account, geometrical nonlinearity should be considered. In this paper, we propose the method of large deflection analysis which is based on Murray and Wilson's method. In order to verify the analytical method, three numerical examples are given and the results are compared with the experimental results.

    English, Scientific journal, Free vibration analysis of rectangular Mindlin plates is carried out via the superposition method and is shown to produce accurate results. The analytical method proposed by the authors in this paper solves the problem for the case where the plate has simultaneous elastic edge and internal supports. The conditions of edge supports are uniform lateral, rotational and torsional elastic supports, whereas, the internal supports are column supports with finite area. Compatibility between the plate and column is achieved by requiring that the column and plate rotations be equal. The results presented herein are verified through comparison with results presented by others. Numerical examples presented in this study confirm that the analytical method is able to model the property of the elastic edge supports while simultaneously considering the effect of column restraint, an effect which increases with column number and area.     Japanese, The study of the steady-state vibration of a system under sinusoidal excitation can provide important insights into the more general dynamic response structures. The response of seismically-isolated structures with viscously-damped isolation system was previously studied by the authors. This paper presents the non-linear steady-state vibration of seismically-isolated structures with hysteretically-damping isolation system. The solution method for the steady-state vibration of the non-linear system is based on the work of Tajimi, and expanded to seismically-isolated structures. The non-linear superstructure behavior is significantly different from that of fixed-base structure. Consequently, the important aspects for isolated structure design is highlighted.

    Japanese, The use of flat-plate structures have increased because this type of structure can realize optimum and flexible space utilization. In the application of flat-plate structures, slab resonance should be an important consideration, because of potential problems such as incorrect operation of equipment in manufacturing facilities or occupant discomfort in residential structures. However there are few studies on the free vibration analysis of slabs within flat-plate structures. In this paper, the free vibration analyses of plates with columns resting on lateral, rotational and torsional elastic edge supports uniformly are carried out by use of the superposition method based on the Mindlin plate theory. In order to study the vibration properties of the plate, column size, plate aspect ratio and plate thickness ratio are set up as evaluation parameters.

    Japanese, ファイバーモデルを用いて曲げとせん断を受けるRC梁に発生する斜めせん断亀裂を表現する一手法として,チモシェンコ梁要素を用いたRC梁の材料非線形解析法を提案した。まず有限要素法への定式化の概要と,垂直応力と横せん断応力による2軸応力状態を想定したコンクリートの構成則の取扱いについて記述した。更に,既往の実験結果を対象とした数値計算例を示し,コンクリートに1軸の構成則を用いた従来の解析法との比較を通して,本解析法による荷重一変位応答,亀裂の発生・分布性状について検証した。

In the application of flat-plate structures, slab resonance should be an important consideration, because of potential problems such as incorrect operation of equipment in manufacturing facilities or occupant discomfort in residential structures. However there are few studies on the free vibration analysis of slabs within flat-plate structures. In this study the free vibration analyses of plates with columns resting on lateral and rotational elastic edge support uniformly are carried out by use of the superposition method which based on Mindlin plate theory. In order to study the vibration properties of the plate, column size and plate thickness ratio are set up as evaluation parameters.

    Japanese, The large deformation/post-peak behavior analysis method of concrete beams and columns considering bond-slip of reinforcement is developed. The analytical procedure is capable of predicting the response of concrete beams and columns under axial force and biaxial bending in the material and geometrical nonlinear domains, including post-peak behavior using the incremental arch length method. The paper gives an outline of the nonlinear analysis method which includes the effect of bond-slip of reinforcement to handle the large deformation region, and three numerical examples are given to illustrate the use of the proposed procedure.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, For the purpose of accurately predicting the seismic response of an isolated building, an analytical model for seismic isolation devices with hysteretic damping is proposed. The proposed model is capable of well-predicting the force-displacement relationships of various different types of devices, high-damping rubber bearings, lead-rubber bearings, and two types of steel dampers. Seismic response analyses are conducted to study the effectiveness of both existing models and the proposed model. The responses given by the existing models are mostly conservative. This fact indicates that the proposed model can be used to evaluate the performance of isolation devices accurately and effectively.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, This paper deals with the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete slabs considering the effect of bond slip of reinforcement. Only a small number of studies have been reported in the literature that approximately consider the effect of reinforcement bond slip in two-way reinforced concrete slabs, and almost no cases are found in which material nonlinear analysis is used to rigorously consider the effect. In this paper a potential energy functional is first derived, and then a finite element formulation of the problem is implemented. In order to verify the analytical method five numerical examples are given and the results compared with experimental results.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, This paper describes the vertical behavior of elastomeric isolation bearings. A study consists of three phases. In the first phase, dynamic loading tests are conducted. Two types of high-damping rubber bearings which differ in thickness of flange-plates are used. Second, finite element analyses are performed to simulate the test results. Both the tests and the analysis results show that the flange-plates has significant effect on tension modulus. Third, a hysteresis model is proposed. Good agreement between the experimental and the analysis results shows that the model can be an effective numerical tool to predict the seismic response of isolated buildings.

    English, Scientific journal, For the purpose of accurately predicting the seismic response of base-isolated structures, an analytical hysteresis model for elastomeric seismic isolation bearings is proposed. An extensive series of experimental tests of four types of seismic isolation bearings--two types of high-damping rubber bearings, one type of lead-rubber bearing and one type of silicon rubber bearing--was carried out with the objective of fully identifying their mechanical characteristics. The proposed model is capable of well-predicting the mechanical properties of each type of elastomeric bearing into the large strain range. Earthquake simulator tests were also conducted after the loading tests of the individual bearings. In order to show the validity of the proposed model, non-linear dynamic analyses were conducted to simulate the earthquake simulator test results. Good agreement between the experimental and analytical results shows that the model can be an effective numerical tool to predict not only the peak response value but also the force-displacement relationship of the isolators and floor response spectra for isolated structures.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, Four buildings at the Kushiro Technical High School, damaged in the 1993 Kushiro-Oki and the 1994 Hokkaido-Toho-Oki earthquakes, were modeled as an assembly of nonlinear elements to verify our present techniques for earthquake-resistant design of structures. The input motions were independently evaluated based on the strong motions recorded on the ground at the Kushiro District Meteorological Observatory, 2km west of the school, and the soil-structure interaction was taken into account. The results of the dynamic response analysis showed a good agreement with the detail of different degree of the damage to the four buildings.
  • STUDY ON LARGE-ACCELERATION MOTIONS RECORDED DURING THE LARGEST AFTERSHOCK (M6.5) OF THE 1993 HOKKAIDO-NANSEI-OKI EARTHQUAKE

    Japanese, Scientific journal, A very large acceleration of 1.6 g was observed on the first floor of the Meiwa Elementary School, Hokkaido, during the largest aftershock of the 1993 Hokkaido-Nansei-Oki earthquake. In order to investigate the cause of this very large acceleration, this paper described the building three-dimensionally as an assembly of nonlinear elements because its plan was not a simple rectangle, and then the base-rock motions were estimated at a depth of 8.6 m after evaluating the soil-structure interaction. The resultant base-rock motions made it clear that the large acceleration of 1.6 g was ascribed mainly to the amplification factor of up to 30 at about 4 Hz from the base rock to the first floor of the building.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, This paper describes a series of seismic fragility analyses of base-isolated structures considering non-linear superstructure behavior. The Latin hypercube sampling technique is applied to construct a series of samples that explicitly account for non-Linear behavior. Fragility curves are generated that evaluate the limit state based on maximum superstructure ductility ratio. The study shows that base-isolation systems have a significant advantage for seismic protection compared with fixed-base structures. However, careful consideration should be given to the fact that plastic deformation demands on the superstructure can increase dramatically after yielding if the super-structure is designed anticipating a reduced seismic lateral shear force.

Two types of high-damping rubber bearings and one type of lead-rubber bearing were used in these tests. Moderate and extreme input motions were applied to the model to study the ultimate behavior of the isolated structure. Dynamic analyses were conducted to simulate the response to both moderate and extreme input tests, using a previously-developed analytical model. Good agreement between the experimental and analytical results was obtained, and the analytical model was confirmed to be suitable for representing the mechanical properties of bearings.

    English, Scientific journal, The strong-motion records at the Kushiro District Meteorological Observatory from the 1993 Kushiro-Oki earthquake were applied to rigid-frame structures of different types. The total plastic energy dissipation of short period structures under the records was larger than that under the design input motions, while the energy dissipation of long period structures was comparable or smaller. The response level-of a low building with a short natural period showed that the damage should be moderate or severe. But, the actual damage to such a kind of buildings was rather slight around the observatory. The earthquake resistant capacity of non-structural components should be appropriately evaluated in design process.

    Takahashi Hiroaki
    Comprehensive investigation on the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake and its disaster was conducted. Mainshock rupture initiated at deepest part and major slip was occurred in 20-30km deep. Multiple simultaneous landslides in Atsuma town was induced by combination of strong ground shaking and weak sliding layer between pyroclastic fall deposit layers. Halloysite cray minerals was discovered in all sliding layers. Simulation suggested landslides might attack residential houses within 6 seconds. Observed peak ground motions in nearby area were larger than common distance attenuation model. Severe wooden house damage in Mukawa town was due to amplified seismic waves due to site effects. Sounding and boring investigation revealed filled low-density volcanic ash and higher groundwater level in liquefaction area. Electricity blackout caused severe damage in social and economic activities of Hokkaido. These scientific outcomes were explained to residents at public briefing session.
