Japanese, Inappropriate treatment of industrial wastes, including liquid wastes may cause major accidents and/or serious environmental pollutions. In the technical point of view, the liquid waste, treatment means removal of hazardous properties from liquid waste. However, in a university or other higher educational institution, the liquid wastes treatment includes not only a technical aspect but also an educational aspect. The most important factor for minimizing the risk potential in the waste treatment is that every member of the university staff (including students and other researchers) concerns own waste material produced by their activity. A mission of the university is to educate their staff about the risk potential of the wastes. The university staff learns the environmental and health effects of liquid wastes management through waste management. The liquid waste treatment in the university is classified as self-treatment and outsourcing the waste treatment. There is no remarkable difference in the technical aspect between the above two liquid wastes treatment. The self-treatment of the liquid wastes is effective to train the university staff and to educate students. This minimizes the risk potential in the wastes treatment. In the case of the outsourcing, reducing the expenses and efforts for the wastes treatment may lose sense of the risk potential of the chemical liquid wastes. It is necessary to care the education of the university staff. Appropriate management of liquid wastes makes management of whole industrial waste include liquid waste easy. - A simple and rapid method for simultaneous pre-concentration of eight trace-heavy-metals in water using 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol and yttrium for X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Japanese, Trades of unwanted reagents have been studied for five fiscal years (2005-2009) on University of Toyama, via relational database system for chemicals. There were total 635 reagents available at our online trading system (virtual stockroom), and 30.7% of reagents were reassigned to other laboratories for the period. As a result, these actions lead to save \1,044,814. Actually, this circulation system has been used by 40% of laboratories which use chemicals. For example, retiring professors registered most of their unexpended substances. On one hand, organic chemists tended to collect a lot of materials from others. Eighty five percent trades were achieved not intra-department but inter-department transactions. If there was no request for two months, remaindered things might be disposed. Basically, trade ratios depend on the number of users. In particular, the favorable chemicals were likely to be dealt which were used for washing or neutralization, such as organic solvents, acids, and alkaline reagents. In addition, unopened bottle were welcome conditions for pick up. - Estimation of Suppressive Effect of Dissolved Organic Matter on Copper Toxicity Using the Microscaled Algal Growth Inhibition Test

Japanese, Dissolved organic matter (DOM) significantly relates to the speciation of heavy-metal ions in aquatic environments. To evaluate the toxicity changes of heavy-metal ions induced by the existence of DOM or dissolved humic substances (DHS), a microscaled algal growth inhibition (μAGI) test was conducted using a commercially available 96-well micro-plate. The μAGI test was compared with a regular AGI test using an Erlenmeyer flask. A regular AGI test is not very beneficial for accessing the toxicity of chemicals in an aqueous solution containing DOM or DHS because it absorbs visible light, which is required for algal growth. However, in this study, we clarified that the amount of algal growth in the μAGI test is hardly affected even at a high DHS concentration. The changes in the toxicity of copper to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii were evaluated under two conditions of the μAGI test, that is, with and without DOM/DHS. DOM and DHS samples were extracted from freshwater samples from Sakata in Niigata prefecture, Japan. The toxicity mitigation coefficients (TMCs) at 10 mgC · <I>l</I>-1 DOM and DHS were estimated to be 1.4-2.7 and 4.8, respectively. Evidence found in this study shows that DHS strongly reduces the toxicity of copper (II) to algae, as compared with nonhumic components in DOM. - Membrane Solubilization Technique for Spectrophotometric Determination of Trace Formaldehyde in Rainwater

大学等環境安全協議会編集委員会事務局, Mar. 2015, Japanese, The local exhaust ventilation systems (fume hoods) need periodic maintenance to maintain functioning. However, few universities establish sufficient systems for management of fume hoods. It is necessary for appropriate manage-ment of fume hoods in universities to learn some technical knowledge about them. Consequently, some sympathizers from such universities as Ibaraki University, Shizuoka University, University of Tsukuba, and so on, have cooperated with each other and published a textbook for management of fume hoods in university. In addition, a study group of management of local exhaust ventilation systems has been established.
