英語, 研究論文（学術雑誌）, Excessive smartphone use has been linked to negative psychological outcomes and may also be associated with cognitive impairments and disruptions in mind-body interaction, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated attentional bias towards marginal smartphone stimuli and its relationship with interoceptive awareness and physiological cue reactivity in healthy young adults. Fifty-eight participants completed a letter detection task with varying perceptual loads, during which task-irrelevant smartphone-related or scrambled images were presented in the background. Cardiac responses were recorded to assess physiological reactivity. Participants also completed two questionnaires for interoceptive awareness and self-report smartphone addiction. Using a designed and automated clustering based on behavioural responses, participants were classified into two groups: one group exhibited distraction from smartphone background only under low perceptual load, while the other showed consistent attentional bias regardless of load. Notably, the latter group reported significantly lower interoceptive awareness and higher smartphone addiction scores. Additionally, they exhibited heart rate acceleration in response to smartphone stimuli, indicating heightened arousal, whereas the former group showed heart rate deceleration. These findings demonstrate that consistent attentional bias towards smartphone stimuli is associated with reduced interoceptive awareness, specifically a decreased tendency to notice and trust internal bodily sensations, and increased physiological reactivity. - Bridging Perception and Language: A Systematic Benchmark for LVLMs' Understanding of Amodal Completion Reports.

One might think that it is merely a means for the empathizer to gather rich information about the empathized. We shall rather argue that listening is an embodied action, one that plays a significant role in empathic perspective-taking. We make our case via a descriptive analysis of a paradigm case of empathy mediated by listening or what we can call empathy through listening. On our view, empathy through listening involves three distinctive features: (1) dynamic unfolding, (2) collaboration, and (3) mutual perspective reshaping. Abstract
Phenomenology is one of the most promising approaches to study conscious experience. It holds that a rigorous study of conscious experience requires a transition in the subject from the “natural attitude” (NA) to the “phenomenological attitude” (PA). NA describes our ordinary stance, in which our attention is directed at external objects and events. PA is a distinctive, reflective stance in which our attention is directed at our conscious experience itself. Despite its theoretical importance in philosophy and science of consciousness, the neural mechanisms underlying PA remain unknown. To clarify this point, we developed a novel behavioral task in which participants alternate between NA and PA in relation to their stimulus-evoked subjective experiences. Participants are presented with two sentences and requested to identify the one that best captures their experience. These sentences are designed to induce either NA or PA. We found that participants had lower error rates but slower reaction times in the PA condition compared to the NA condition, suggesting a difference beyond task difficulty. Using fMRI, we also found that multivoxel activation patterns in the premotor cortex, posterior parietal cortex, supplementary motor area, and cerebellum successfully classified the task conditions. Furthermore, the activation strength in these regions was lower in the PA condition, indicating that PA depends on neural processes that suppress action-related information. These findings provide the first evidence for the neural signature of PA, contributing to a better understanding of phenomenological method and its underlying neural mechanisms.
Significance statement
Phenomenology is one of the most promising approaches to study conscious experience. A key step is a transition from the natural attitude (NA)—where our attention is directed at external objects and events—to the phenomenological attitude (PA)—where our attention is directed toward our conscious experience itself. However, the neural processes underlying PA remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify this point by analyzing fMRI signals measured during a cognitive task that forced participants to repeatedly alternate between NA and PA. We observed that multiple action-related brain regions exhibited different activation patterns between NA and PA. Our findings provide the first neuroscientific evidence that illuminates the core process of the phenomenological method. - Narrative self-constitution as embodied practice

There are many theories of the functions of consciousness. How these theories relate to each other, how we should assess them, and whether any integration of them is possible are all issues that remain unclear. To contribute to a solution, this paper offers a conceptual framework to clarify the theories of the functions of consciousness. This framework consists of three dimensions: (i) target, (ii) explanatory order, and (iii) necessity/sufficiency. The first dimension, target, clarifies each theory in terms of the kind of consciousness it targets. The second dimension, explanatory order, clarifies each theory in terms of how it conceives of the explanatory relation between consciousness and function. The third dimension, necessity/sufficiency, clarifies each theory in terms of the necessity/sufficiency relation posited between consciousness and function. 英語, 研究論文（学術雑誌）, We discuss our attempts to develop a short-term phenomenological training program for training naïve participants in phenomenological skills. After reviewing existing methodologies for collecting phenomenological data and clarifying the benefit of the short-term training approach, we present two training programs and two experiments that tested their effectiveness. Experiment 1 tested the two-stage training program, which consists of (i) the illusion training which instructs participants to describe the experience of a visual illusion and (ii) the guidance training which offers individualized feedbacks for improving their description. This program proved effective, but also excessively skill-demanding. Experiment 2 tested the one-stage training program, consisting only of the illusion training; it was easier to use, but exhibited a smaller training effect. The subjective features of psychological phenomena have been studied intensively in experimental science in recent years. Although various methods have been proposed to identify subjective features of psychological phenomena, there are elusive subjective features such as the spatiotemporal structure of experience, which are difficult to capture without some additional methodological tools. We propose a new experimental method to address this challenge, which we call the contrast-based experimental phenomenological method (CEP). CEP proceeds in four steps: (i) front-loading phenomenology, (ii) online second-personal interview, (iii) questionnaire survey, and (iv) hypotheses testing. It differs from other experimental phenomenological methods in that it takes advantage of phenomenal contrasts in collecting phenomenological data. In this paper, we verify the validity and productivity of this method by applying it to binocular rivalry (BR). The study contributes to empirical research on BR in three respects. First, it provides additional evidence for existing propositions about the subjective features of BR: e.g. the proposition that the temporal dynamics of the experience depend upon subject-dependent parameters such as attentional change. Second, it deepens our understanding of the spatiotemporal structures of the transition phase of BR. Third, it elicits new research questions about depth experience and individual differences in BR. Springer, 2026年05月, 373–387, 英語, Chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs) are increasingly capable of engaging in what seems like natural conversations with humans. This raises the question of whether we should interact with these chatbots in a morally considerate manner. In this chapter, we examine how to answer this question from within the normative framework of virtue ethics. In the literature, two kinds of virtue ethics arguments, the moral cultivation and the moral character argument, have been advanced to argue that we should afford moral treatment to social robots. However, we propose a moral character argument against the view that we should afford moral treatment to LLM-based chatbots drawing on the notion of practical wisdom. Practical wisdom in this context consists in the skill to discern genuine and artificial sociality. Drawing on ideas from phenomenological philosophy, we argue that this involves the ability to distance oneself from direct social perception and the ability to widen one’s awareness over one’s apparently social interactions. In contrast to conceptions that take habit to be automatic or a more-or-less rote repetition of behavior, Dewey and Merleau-Ponty consider habit to be a general bodily responsiveness to the world. 2023年05月18日, According to narrative views of the self, we construct our identity by developing self-narratives. Many also hold that our identity as an embodied subject is shaped through bodily interactions with the world. However, existing theories of the self leave it largely unclear how self-narratives and the body work together in this process. I present a novel account on this issue by drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s conception of the body and habits. For him, the body has an inherent tendency to cultivate an organization of habits through its history of engagement with the world. Furthermore, these organizations of habits shape the subject’s general relationship with the world. I argue that the narrative self is grounded in this habituality of the body in two respects. First, narrative self-conceptions are typically informed by reflections upon pre-existing habitual patterns of interactions. Second, self-narrating is typically itself an embodied and embedded practice involving pre-existing narrative habits. 慶應義塾大学, 本WSでは、人間がAIに主体性を帰属させる実践をめぐる諸問題について、哲学、倫理学、科学技術社会論の観点から議論を提起する。長坂は、哲学史における惑星運動と不動の動者をめぐる議論を手掛かりに、身体的及び非身体的な人工物が、いかなる条件ものとで、我々にとって主体として現れるようになるのかを考察する。新川は、先端科学技術によって生み出された人工的存在者がどのような意味で「主体」とみなされうるのかを整理し、その倫理的な位置づけについて論じる。竹下は、人工主体と人間の関係だけでなく、そこに非ヒト動物を含めた三者の相互関係という観点から、人工主体との関係のあり方について論じる。特に人工主体と非ヒト動物（特にイヌ）のあいだの友情関係の可能性について検討する。池原は、人間と非人間を区別しないことで知られるブルーノ・ラトゥールのアクターネットワーク理論の観点の人工主体への応用可能性について論じる。濱田は、text2image技術の進展によって、AIが従来は人間主体に特権的だと見なされてきた創造的な役割を担いつつあることをふまえて、人類のデータを使って学習する人工主体が人間社会に与える影響について論じる。, 37060174, ［国内会議］ - Habit and narrative selfhood

今年度は以下の三つの研究を主に実施した。
（１）意識経験の内観の理論のサーベイを行った。具体的には、意識経験の内観の理論には、外界の事物の知覚と類比的なメカニズムが内観の際にも働いているとする知覚説、意識経験を実現するメカニズムのうちに内観の機構が包含されており、意識経験そのものが内観的判断の構成要素になっているとする直知説、意識経験についての内観は、意識経験のうちに現れている世界のあり方からその意識経験それ自体のあり方を推論することに基づくとする推論説という三つの立場があることを明らかにした。
（２）現象学的な反省として特徴づけられるタイプの内観を支える神経メカニズムを特定するための神経科学的な実験研究を設計し、準備的な実験を行った。
（３）Declan Smithiesが提案する意識と内観の関係についての理論を検討・評価し、その問題点を特定した。なお、この研究成果の一部は、千葉大学の小草泰氏との共著でAsian Journal of Philosophyという学術誌に"A challenge to the phenomenal sufficiency thesis"というタイトルの書評論文として発表した。
その他にも関連研究として、内観によって捉えられる意識の現象学的特徴と道徳的地位の関係や、意識の機能についての概念的明確化についての研究を実施した。それぞれの研究成果の一部は、研究分担者と共著で"Human Brain Organoids and Consciousness"とFunctions of consciousness: conceptual clarification"という論文に組み込み、海外学術誌より発表した（詳細は研究業績を参照）。

本研究の目的は、脳－身体－環境の相互作用から創発する現象として自己をとらえる「身体化された自己」の概念のもとで、ナラティヴ・セルフ（物語的自己）について、将来の実証科学的研究を推進する理論モデルを構想することにある。従来、身体性にもとづく自己の科学的研究はミニマル・セルフ（最小自己）の哲学的理論をもとに進められてきたが、この概念は、自己経験が時間性のもとで物語として編成されていく過程への着目を欠いている。そこで本研究では、身体性への着目を残すことで従来の科学的な自己研究との連続性を保ちつつ、現象学的哲学に依拠してナラティヴ・セルフの理論モデルを新たに提示する。
2020年度は４年計画の１年目であり、主に理論面で次のような成果を得た。(a)ミニマル・セルフとナラティヴ・セルフを身体性において架橋する「身体イメージ」に着目して研究を進めた。身体イメージは、一方でミニマル・セルフを支える身体図式にトップダウンに影響を及ぼし、他方で自己イメージの基盤となってナラティヴ・セルフをボトムアップに構成する。この点を、現象学的精神医学者Ｆ・ファノンの著作を手がかりに明らかにした（Ataria & Tanaka, 2020）。(b)ナラティヴ・セルフは、特定の自己イメージに沿って環境を構成し、その環境と身体的相互作用を繰り返すことで形成・修正されるとの着眼を得た。ナラティヴ・セルフはたんに自己についての言語的な語りだけで構成されるわけではなく、語りの内容に見合う生活環境を形成し、それに対応する生活習慣が形成されることで十全に機能する（例：アスリートとしての自己イメージは、生活環境を整えアスリートらしい生活習慣を形成することで、ナラティヴ・セルフとして機能するようになる）。この論点については、現在論文として内容を取りまとめており、今年度の成果として見込んでいる。

本研究では，現象学，プラグマティズム，日本哲学，身体性認知の観点を取り入れて，習慣とはどのようなものであるかを明らかにし，また，認知や行為を習慣に基づいた働きとして捉え直す。さらに，習慣を中核にすえた心のモデルが神経科学や人工知能研究に対してもつ帰結を考察する。本年度の主な研究実績は以下の4点である。
①共感を習慣に基づいた働きとして捉え直す研究を継続した（分担者早川との共同研究）。昨年度末の時点で国際誌に論文を投稿し，6月に国際学会で発表をおこない，議論を前進させることができた。だが残念ながら，年度内に査読結果が返ってこなかった。
②物語的自己意識の形成における習慣の働きを明らかにする研究を進めた。哲学や心理学で唱えられている「物語的自己」の理論によると，私たちの自己意識は過去の経験や行為を物語にまとめあげる「語り」の働きによって形成される。このような語りにおいて身体的な習慣形成の力が重要な役割を果たしている可能性を検討した。現在，論文を準備中である。
③世阿弥の芸道論と現代哲学／心理学の観点を組み合わせて，技と習慣の関係を考察する研究を推進した。現代の哲学者ヒューバート・ドレイファスは専門技能（expertise）を洗練された感覚運動的習慣として説明する。しかし，身体は次々に新たな習慣を身につけて成長するばかりのものではない。本研究では，世阿弥の「初心」の概念に基づいて，ドレイファスの技能論が健康で力強い身体像を暗黙の前提としていることを明らかにした。また本年度の研究では，世阿弥の離見の見を生態心理学の観点をまじえて分析する研究も，ほぼまとめあげられた。
④「意識の機能」にかんする理論を体系的に理解するための枠組みを提案する研究をおこなった（分担者西田・新川・濱田との共同研究）。本研究には意識研究を習慣の観点と結びつけるための予備的考察となる可能性が期待される。

ロボットや人工知能、脳オルガノイドなどは、人工的に作られたものでありながら、近い将来、技術発展によってある種の「主体」として扱われうるレベルに達する可能性がある。こうした「人工主体」が社会に入り込んでいくとき、そこには深刻な倫理的問題が生じうる。こうした問題を討議するためには、市民・政策決定者・科学者など多様な関係者にとって有用な〈議論のプラットフォーム〉（議論の土台となる原理的な概念的枠組み）を創出し、様々な形で社会に実装していく作業が必要である。本企画調査では、そのようなプロジェクトの計画・デザインを集中的に行う。まず技術的現状や国内外の関連する議論の調査を行い、それにもとづいて、哲学者・倫理学者・科学者・企業研究者による緊密なチームで徹底的な討議を行い、議論すべき問題や方向性の絞り込み、論点の整理、将来の技術発展のありうるフェイズに対応したプロジェクトの具体的なデザインを行う。

本研究の目的は、神経科学の三人称的観点と現象学の一人称的観点を融合させた「神経現象学」の手法を中核にして、意識の構造を科学的に探究するための研究枠組みを確立することである。前年度に引き続き本年度も、「現象学的トレーニング方法の開発・改良」と「両眼視野闘争の現象学的特徴の解明」の二つのテーマについて研究を行った。以下ではそれぞれの研究について記述していく。
科学的な意識研究においては実験参加者から意識経験の諸特徴についての報告を得る必要がある。しかし、環境内の事物の記述と区別できる仕方で意識経験を記述するのは簡単ではない。特に、次の二点が課題となっていた。(1)注意を環境内の事物から経験そのものへと向け替えること、(2)経験そのものへの豊かで分かりやすい記述を与えること。本年度は、前年度に開発したパイロット版のトレーニングプログラムを改良し、注意の向け替えと記述の与え方のレクチャービデオをベースにしたプログラムを開発した。なお、このプログラムは現象学の知識をもたない実験者が利用できるようにデザインされている。今年度は、このトレーニングプログラムの効果を確かめるための心理実験を行った。来年度には、その実験データをもとに、トレーニングプログラムの実用化に向けてさらなる改良を行う予定である。
両眼視野闘争はこれまでの科学的な意識研究で非常によく使用されてきた。だが、両眼視野闘争の現象学的特徴についてはまだ十全な研究がされていない。前年度に、両眼視野闘争の現象学的特徴を解明するための実験を行った。その結果、両眼視野闘争は通常の知覚経験と比較して「時空間的不確定性（いつどこで経験の変化が生じているかはっきりしない）」があることが分かった。今年度は、予測誤差理論とエナクティビズムを手がかりに両眼視野闘争がなぜその特徴をもつのかの分析を進めてきた。

本研究は、「視点変換体験」（ビデオカメラとヘッドマウント・ディスプレイを用いて通常とは異なる視点から自己の身体を知覚する体験）と称する体験について記述し、得られたデータに基づいて自己意識と他者理解の理論モデルを構築することを目的として始まったものである。体験プログラムを作成して8名にインタビューを実施したところ、視点変換体験が日常的な自己の様式を変容させ、身体外部の視点に同一化する自己と、体性感覚に同一化する自己に、自己意識を分裂させうることが判明した。他者の視点から自己を見る経験は日常生活でも想像上で生起しているが、これが知覚的に生起すると、自己の空間的分裂または拡張を促進すると考えられる。

本研究は、J・J・ギブソンの生態心理学と現象学とを融合させた生態学的現象学を理論的中核として、人間のあらゆる活動を身体と環境との循環的相互作用のなかで理解し、人間環境についての総合科学の基礎づけを目的とした。5年間で、従来の心の科学では注目されていなかった中規模生活圏の構築に焦点をあて、どのような人間環境を(再)構築すれば、人間と自然の双方にとって最適なものとなるかを探求することができた。研究成果に示したように、国内外の様々な領域の研究者が協働し、著作・論文・学会発表・シンポジウム・ワークショップ、講演会などの多数の業績を上げることができ、環境の実証的現象学という新分野の形成に大きく貢献した。

私は2010年1月より2011年1月まで日本学術振興会優秀若手研究者海外派遣事業により、米国フロリダ州立セントラルフロリダ大学哲学科よおいて、Shaun Gallagher教授の指導のもと、研究活動を行った。滞在中、近年、認知科学と心の哲学の領域で大きな注目を沿びている「拡張する心」という考え方との関連において、「志向性」概念をめぐる哲学的問題の考察を進めた。認知科学や分析系の心の哲学の諸研究では、世界のなかでの心の位置づけに開して、心は「頭の中」に宿るとする「内在主義」の見方が標準的なものとして前提されることが多い。それに対して、「拡張する心」あるいは拡張主義の見方によると、認知や経験は(脳以外の)身体や環境内の事物をその物理的基盤とすることができる。現在、内在主義と拡張主義のあいだでは、認知や経験の位置をめぐって、哲学者と認知科学者を巻き込んだ活発な論争が繰り広げられているが、私の研究は、拡張主義の見方を十分に確立するためには、そこに前提される新行動主義的/道具主義的な志向性観を再考し、代わりに身体性の現象学の見方を取り人れた新ブラグマティズムの志向性観を採用する必要があるという見方を提唱した。この研究は、これまでの論争に新たな視点を導入するものだとGallagher教授からは高い評価を得ている。その研究成果は、現在、雑誌Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciencesに投稿中(査読中)であるが、Gallagher教授からは「間違いなく掲載されるだろう」との見通しをいただいている。この研究に基づいて、Gallagher教授との共同研究も行い、そこでは身体的な新プラグマティズムの志向性観と社会的認知の理論の関連性を検討した。
