Hiroshi received his Dr. rer. nat. degree in Geology/Paleontology from the University of Kiel in Germany well over a decade ago. He was a full-time researcher in the field of marine science until 2007. Then he starts working for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP1) and switched his main field to international scientific collaboration and inter-agency coordination. Currently, he is the director and Professor of the Office for International Academic Support, Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University. He is fluent in a few languages.
