United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 indicates the need for and importance of inclusive public spaces as a prerequisite towards sustainable cities. Shopping malls in urban India attract a significantly large population daily, making them an important typology of urban structures which deserve universal design. Thus, in this paper, universal design features of shopping malls in Kolkata have been considered. Despite a significant increase in the number of elderly and specially-abled people, civic administration in Kolkata has not been able to successfully implement the national guidelines on inclusiveness in its shopping malls. Five shopping malls from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation were considered case areas for the fieldwork. The accessibility audit checklist included in the ‘Harmonized Guidelines and Standards for Universal Accessibility in India 2021’ published by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, has been used in this paper. It was found that the accessibility percentage of shopping malls ranges between 14.4% and 44.8%, indicating the lack of universal design considerations. Pearson’s correlation between the year of establishment and the accessibility percentage of each case area was found to be −0.66, indicating an alarming deterioration in universal design considerations over the years. On comparing the accessibility performance with the diverse user groups, it was found that individual wheelchair users are likely to face the most difficulty in the case areas with a median accessibility value of 41.46%. This research indicated that accessible continuity in shopping malls in Kolkata can be imparted only by implementing case-specific universal design assessment through a primary survey.

In the town of Sacapulas, located in the mountainous country of Guatemala, there is a constant risk of natural disasters. Floods and landslides occur frequently, resulting in the loss of human lives and cultural aspects. Important to the region, the creation of the black salt is most affected. This resource has been created since the time of the Mayans on the salt beach surrounding the town. However, from the 1940s onwards, this industry has shrunk. As a result, architectural expressions known as “salt kitchens” have almost disappeared, and there is no information on the subject available. By employing interviews, area survey, and GPS mapping, it was discovered that the location of the salt kitchens is determined by the shape of the beach. However, only one third of the beach area is accessible up to this day. It was discovered that the destruction of the salt kitchens is due to natural elements as well as owners reusing the land for other economically viable functions. To preserve their existence, the first plans of the salt kitchens were created, and will help future researchers if necessary.

This study aims to analyze the process of residents’ resettlement and the perceptions of the town hall by action research on public housing relocation project in Kamishihoro, Hokkaido. Through interview surveys with the residents and the project staff, the following were found; 1) The staff tends to prioritize resident’s preference over the project road map. 2) Residents who feel pressured to move or who have been assigned where to move may not have enough time to fully consider their resettlement. 3) Residents who leave the process to their families may end up moving without their preferences being reflected.

In the town of Sacapulas located in the mountainous country of Guatemala, there is a constant risk of natural disasters. Floods and landslides occur frequently, resulting in the loss of human lives and cultural aspects. Specifically, in the region, the creation of black salt is the most affected. This resource has been created since the time of the Mayans on the salt beach surrounding the town. However, from the 1940s onwards, this industry has shrunk, impacting the sustainability of indigenous people. After conducting several area and space analyses, it was found that the black salt beach has evolved considerably since the last research conducted in 2001. The shape of the space has been reduced, while the use of the area has been modified by the people of the town, who specifically use the hot springs located below the river shore of the beach. This new usage can coexist with the Salt making industry is only made by a few people now, there are few working in this industry, and they only work in the dry season. The result is an opportunity for economic growth and an increase in tourism if the area handled properly by managing the land and planning ahead.

In this research, the condition of universal mobility, in the centers of historic Indian cities, has been critically analyzed. Implementing universal design guidelines (especially universal mobility standards) in the centers of historic Indian cities is comparatively challenging, due to the high-density, ever-increasing population, and organic urban development. The rising number of elderly and specially abled people also add a demographic challenge to universal mobility. The focus of this research is to understand the extent to which universal mobility guidelines can be implemented in the centers of historic Indian cities. The dataset for this research is derived from a field survey of 69 footpath stretches from the centers of 5 historic cities in India, namely Jaipur, Jodhpur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, and Chennai. Footpath stretches in the centers of these historic cities were evaluated based on several factors pertaining to universally designed infrastructure and universal mobility features. Such comprehensive research on universal mobility in footpaths of historic Indian cities has not been previously conducted. The findings of this research indicate the poor condition of universal mobility in the studied areas. Furthermore, the results can be useful for assessing the extent of implementation of universal mobility in the centers of other historic Indian cities.

Composed of modern city centers and numerous slum patches in deep proximity and coexistence with one another, the Sub-Saharan African urban landscape is often perceived as chaotic or unorganized in nature due to the inconsistencies in the urban layout derived from the spontaneous occupation in said slums, in Angola, known as “Musseque”. This article focuses on the border between the “Musseque” of Catambor and the Alvalade Neighborhood as a point of interaction of both realities, influencing users to either adjust their activities to the streets or adjust the streets to their needs. With the purpose of understanding the streets’ environmental behavior settings and purpose improvements while preserving said environmental behavior, this study uses the behavior mapping method to identify the users’ stationary activities and then groups them by zone and occurrence, followed ultimately by a series of interviews. The results uncovered a degree of self-intervention by the users, ranging from the establishment of “commercial spots” on the street to “the setting of places to sit and gather” to accommodate for the lack of services, defying the intended purposes of the streets and prompting a deep understanding of what guides the decision-making processes and what the users consider valuable to the built space.

In this research, expert opinions on universal mobility in the footpaths of urban India have been critically appraised. Universal mobility (as a component of universal design) is still a largely ignored urban parameter in India despite an increase of 732.20% in the specially-abled and 105.25% in the elderly between 1911 and 2011. A total of 257 experts from the field of architecture and planning hailing from 66 cities in India were interviewed for this research. It was found that despite nationally implemented universal design guidelines, footpaths in 42.8% of the cities do not have universal mobility. In total, 74.7% of the respondents identify the dimension of the footpath as the most important factor for implementing universal mobility. The results of this study indicate the importance of universal design in improving the quality of life in Indian cities, and how urban local bodies can play a significant role in the process by using Public Private Partnership (hereafter, PPP) models and a new accessibility audit checklist.

In this research, the role of cognition in Universal Mobility at the pedestrian-level has been investigated. A stretch of approximately 850 m in the core of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (in India) has been delineated as the case area for this research. The 02 data sets considered for this research are: 1) Physical data: Pedestrian Count and Vehicular Traffic Volume, and 2) Cognitive data: Light Intensity, Noise, and Thermal Comfort. The authors collected the data from the case area in the years 2020 and 2021. This paper initially involves determining the pedestrian “Level of Service” (LOS) based on the pedestrian count. Furthermore, the authors co-relate (Pearson’s Correlation with a 95% confidence interval) the LOS data with the light intensity, sound intensity, and temperature data; to establish a relationship between them. The result of this research indicates that there is a gap in realizing the potential of walkability in the case area. The authors conclude that the improvement of cognition in pedestrian-level Universal Mobility can lead to a better physical environment for the specially-abled and elderly.

This paper aims to review a large-scale collective relocation planning of the Koizumi-Machi district, which implemented the Radburn design housing to mitigate the environmental transition against the Great East Japan earthquake. Based on actual conditions through two-year investigations after resettlement, it demonstrates that residents utilized the relocation site adapting to different issues of the community relocation: successions of the previous district's neighborhood relationships and constructions of new ones due to integrated multiple districts. On the other hand, there is a mismatch between total housing land design and individual housing reconstructions in point of the correspondence between entrance direction and cul-de-sac.

In this research, users’ perception towards Universal Mobility in old core cities of India has been critically analyzed. Despite Universal Design guidelines from the United Nations and Union Government of India, old cities in India seldom have Universal Mobility, in effect endangering the lifestyle of senior citizens and differently-abled people. The core of Kolkata Municipal Corporation in Kolkata, India, has been considered a case example for this research. This research has considered three types of datasets for analysis. First, the authors interviewed 310 respondents from the Indian design fraternity, with the objective of understanding their opinions on the concept of Universal Design. In the next investigative study of 125 respondents from different wards of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the purpose was to comprehend people’s perception regarding walkability and mobility in an old Indian city. In the last visual survey of a stretch in Central Kolkata, the focus was on identifying hindrances in Universal Mobility in an old city core of Indian origin. Significant dissatisfaction was found regarding walkability amongst all user groups, which is linked to poor infrastructural conditions. Furthermore, accessing public transportation is difficult due to improper waiting facilities. However, the design fraternity in India suggests the need of separate accessibility guidelines for old and new cities in India. The design fraternity also recommends a customized rating system for accessing Universal Design. The result of this study indicates a need of recognizing the difficulty in imparting Universal Mobility in old core cities in India. This information can be used for preparing an access audit checklist through Architectural Planning, which is the first step in proposing a framework for Universal Mobility in old core cities in India.

The shortage of open spaces in developing countries in Asia such as Vietnam has been a thorny question for urbanists. Due to a poor history of public spaces, people tend to use street spaces as open spaces and other functions that bring chaos and danger onto the streets. Although developed countries in the West have overcome the dangers of life on street spaces to some extent, Vietnam, with its low quality of life, retains its inherent street bustle. Street improvements have been carried out to enhance the quality of urban life. This research aims at comparing improved and unimproved street spaces in various aspects, including user behavior and the environment-behavior relationship within street spaces and their surroundings. The findings contribute to the future improvement of street spaces in Vietnam and other developing countries based on theories of Environment-Behavior Studies. Through this research, the street renovation and development idea can be processed in a distinctive manner that appreciates the cultural and social context instead of being derived from the arbitrary or intuitive ideas of designers. By using various observation methods such as centered behavioral mapping (PcBM) and visual encounter surveys (VES), and statistical analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA), the findings show that a total of eight physical attributes need consideration during street renovations or development processes. Improved and unimproved street spaces share two attributes and differ in six attributes. Additionally, three environment-behavior patterns support the implications detailed in this paper. Finally, a suggestion for street space development and management is made to support related authorities and urbanists in future projects; it is hope that this research will contribute to creating more livable and sustainable street environments.

Mixed habitation environments have gradually proved to be an effective planning method to promote social integration in many countries. However, due to the differences in the social backgrounds of each country, it is essential to implement construction methods suitable for local conditions. On the other hand, the planning theories and construction methods discussed from multiple perspectives, including an architectural perspective of spatial forms, have been insufficient, which is not conducive to constructing a sustainable dwelling environment. This article aims to clarify the planning status of spatial forms and their issues by investigating existing projects with mixed habitation environments in China. Unlike other countries that have implemented relevant policies for many years, China has just begun to explore relevant schemes (i.e., public-rental housing in private-owned housing complexes) aiming to promote mixed habitation environments. The selected research objects included all projects already inhabited at the end of June 2017 in the city of Beijing. Through field survey, the research objects were divided into eight types via an analysis of building layouts and residents' traffic lines. The results show that out of the many research objects, two kinds of housing were clearly distinctive, and only a few research objects matched the basic conditions to be defined as a mixed habitation. The conditions are not conducive to the formation of mixed habitation; therefore, a more detailed discussion on how to design a mixed habitation environment is necessary to aid further research.

Residents have territorial cognition with different hierarchies and conduct corresponding behaviors in the outdoor space of housing blocks through sharing space and facilities. This mechanism stems from human need and might be influenced by physical environmental elements. To understand this effect, especially after a guideline for transforming existing gated housing blocks was enacted in China, this study compared the territoriality of open and gated housing blocks from the view of the cognition, behavior, and space through combined methods. Interview, snapshot, and observation were conducted to capture the situation of these three dimensions, then they were evaluated and grouped by factor analysis and quartiles. Obtained results in the open housing block were found to be inferior to that in the gated case. The conclusion was drawn based on the above that there are remarkable differences between open and gated housing blocks on the intensity of residents' territorial cognition, the level and quantity of their territorial behaviors, and the distribution as well as continuity of the territorial space.

One of the most insoluble problems confronted by urban areas in developing countries is the shortage of open space; street space allows daily human activities, promotes social interaction, and is seen as a precondition for the sustainable development of the community. Although some seemingly public space is also built up in Vietnam, street space is often where resident's go to perform activities. This research aims at studying behaviors of users in old street space and the interaction with existing physical settings; as an input to future renovation and the development of street space in a manner that respects the cultural and social context of the Vietnamese people. User's behaviors in streets and physical characteristics of space were collected and processed in accordance with theories of behavior setting and proxemics using some methods including place-centered behavioral mapping (PcBM) and visual encounter surveys (VES). The analysis showed that three types of behavior, including (1) Type A where various frequent activities occurred, (2) Type B which discouraged most human activities, and (3) Type C where neither frequent nor infrequent behaviors can represent environmental behavior patterns in the old street spaces of Vietnam and for each of these types of patterns improvements have been proposed by organizing street and pavements layouts detailed in this paper. The proposed improvements are based on the relationship between human behaviors and properties of the street space to assist designers, administers, and authorities in renovating and developing better and more sustainable street space.

This study elucidates the spatial structure of traditional houses, and its transformation toward sustainable development of residential environments in old towns that are currently the focus of tourism development initiatives. Hexia old town in Huai'an District, China, was chosen for this study involving a field survey, questionnaire survey, and interviews. Data analysis identified three periods of residential transformation and three patterns of the residential transformation process. In all cases, there was low awareness of building conservation measures and lack of tourism development by the government, which has translated into ongoing residential transformations according to the demands of daily life. However, in the interests of tourism development, some businesses have started making use of vacant residences and traditional homes, and the relative proximity to work and home imply sustainability of residents' lifestyles under these conditions. An improvement plan for an old town requires a thorough understanding of the circumstances surrounding residential modifications executed by residents, the problems faced in the living environment, as well as efforts to increase the residents' awareness of the issue of sustainable living in that old town.

Streets function as public spaces that improve the aspects of social sustainability by accommodating the daily activities of people, further contributing to the strengthening of relationships in society and the expansion of people's social networks. This research focuses on studying the relationship of human behavior and the street environment in Cebu, Philippines, which can help to contribute to a better approach towards street improvements. Filipino behavior settings were identified and classified based upon people's activities on the street that were gathered using the Behavior Mapping Method. From the analysis of behavior settings on the behavior maps, the current use of the street has been classified into zones, and has shown potential for street sharing by being flexible enough to accommodate both behavior settings and vehicular traffic at different times. Based on the findings of the analysis, design proposals were created as an interview tool to extract information from respondents on the street. From the results of the interviews, considerations such as the importance of preserving the existing behavior settings, promoting safety, and preventing conflicts on the street can be used to develop an improved street design.

Physical characteristics of residential areas affect many aspects of living sustainability, including the environmental behavior of residents. Based on the policy issued in China in 2016, the guideline of transforming existing gated housing blocks into open mode is being gradually implemented in some cities. However, the transforming of boundary walls and internal roads has changed the living environment such as the open space that residents have been accustomed to and has affected environmental behaviors correspondingly. From perspectives of spatial types and environmental behaviors, this research compared an open housing block (which is reconstructed from gated one) with a comparable original gated housing block. The Behavior Mapping Method was used to capture environmental behaviors in two housing blocks factor analysis and cluster analysis were used to extract spatial characteristics and classify spatial types and finally differences between the open housing block and the gated housing block were shown by comparing the distribution of environmental behaviors in each space type. The results indicate that the presence or absence of the enclosing walls affects the division of space types and environmental behaviors in housing blocks. For gated housing blocks, spaces with strong privacy attract various types of activities, which are overwhelming in categories and the number of people, while in the open housing blocks, this situation is not as obvious as in the former.

This paper presents a study of utilization and perceptions towards side setback areas as an important but often overlooked urban space. Side setback areas, which are mutual distances between adjoining buildings in a high density, inner-urban, residential area of Osaka, Japan were selected for study. Volunteers were interviewed in the Kita Nakamichi area to investigate the physical attributes of their side setback areas and their frequency of usage. There was little impression of side setback areas or windows opening towards them. They are seen only as mere left out spaces between the building and boundaries; however, the respondents did not have concerns about security. On the subject of utilization of the side setback areas, activities such as storage and gardening were noted, as these places were seen as abandoned spaces but subject to considerable maintenance, and were suggested by a significant number of the respondents as good places for parking places, storing items and drying clothes due to receiving good light and ventilation. When asked about their preference for making contact with fellow neighbours via their side facades, respondents unanimously reported that they prefer to undertake social interaction at their front door and those accidental contacts are not favoured.

In urban environments, front yards and backyards are valued by residents for the opportunities they provide for enriching residential activities and promoting neighbourly ties. This article extends previous inquiries to identify the preferred uses and attributes of side setback areas in a comparatively dense urban environment. While front yards or backyards may contribute to sociability, no such effects have been reported for the side setback areas, with their function being instrumental rather than social. On the basis of a 2013 survey, the average side setback area in Sapporo (Japan) is <2m wide and its typical use is for storage. A series of cross-statistical analyses was used to investigate possible correlations and to predict the role of the physical attributes of adjacent facades on the perceptions of the respondents. This was followed by an in-depth interview of those who volunteered. The results indicated that side setback areas that were lesser than 1-m wide were perceived as abandoned and assumed to have no function. However, those wider than 1m were seen as secondary storage areas. Regardless of this, respondents valued the light and ventilation provided by side setback areas.

This study examines the progress achieved by projects aimed at promoting collective relocation for disaster prevention since the Great East Japan Earthquake and their current state of affairs. This investigation seeks to clarify the spatial characteristics of the residential land currently under construction on hilly terrain as part of these collective relocation projects. Spatial planning for the collective relocation project in Kesennuma city, which deals with a relatively small area, has focused on relocation that respects existing community units, i.e., the identical and unified types. In addition, most of the housing development plans focus on construction that will connect and run linearly along the National Highway 45, which is the main arterial road of Kesennuma.

Resulted from China's urban housing reform, company housing allocated in the past has been entirely separated from companies and become privately owned. The paper examines such housing, studying how the residents have altered the interior space, and discussing the existing issues with the living environment and influences of family changes on residents' living style. It is found that altering the interior has not improved the living environment. Instead, such housing will, with time, become inadequate to live in while residents' lifestyle and family status change. The paper asserts that such housing will prove problematic as continued residence into the future.

This study intends to discuss the relationship between elementary schools and local communities in Guilin City, China, where major reorganization of school districts is taking place, from a viewpoint of issues shared throughout the Chinese society. Upon finding out facts about the reorganization of elementary schools in Guilin's central District 5, we analyzed consciousness shared by residents surrounding the reorganized schools. Whereas the main factor for school reformation in Japan are dwindling population, influx of population from rural areas or municipal mergers are the surveyed area's major reasons for the reorganization, mostly done through building additional megaschools. Through the research, it was found that the neighborhood residents are generally in support of such reorganization, but their satisfaction level and interest are varied based on the type of reorganization.

In this study, I tried to understand the actual use situation as well as the change of its usage purpose, of the Mongolian Yurt by stock farmers in Xilinguole of Inner Mongolia. Farther, I brought to light how the shift to fixed, stationary housing and the change in stock farming form are related. 1) With the shift to permanent residency, the use and function of the Mongolian Yurt tend to be simplified. 2) The constant shift to permanent residency of livestock owners and the shift of stock farmers to stationary housing are not proportional and uniform. Rather, there are examples where increase of mobility is observed. And the increased demands of fixed the Yurt created by impacts of policies are bringing diversity in the patterns of housing form and pasturing form.

This research aims to understand the dynamics of the living space of pastoralists from the cultural landscape preservation point of view in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. As a result of the analysis, the following points of the distribution and state of the use of pastureland and their change have become clear. Due to the distribution imbalance of the pasturelands, there are decreases of pasture ranges, and the consequent transitions of landscape factors thereof. Also, as the places where the stock and people gather in response to the seasonal change of the natural conditions are dispersedly settled, it is becoming difficult to grasp the seasonal change as a total landscape. It is required that, by further analyzing the networks of neighboring groups of the pastoralist, to map out a preservation strategy in collaboration with the local researchers.
