  • Life Histories of the Transformed: Identities on the Gender and Sexual Border
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    01 Apr. 2021 - 31 Mar. 2025
    Furukawa Gavin
The project revealed how youth on the gender/sexual border find and create identity terms. They re-interpret gender categories for desired traits like power, rejecting certain forms as undesirable, or use joso for internal stability. They engage in linguistic ideological work, severing traditional gender-language links and resignifying terms. Living abroad and social media are crucial for forming new identities and envisioning alternative futures.Complexities of gender came to light; some practices reinforced heteronormativity, others blur gender boundaries, or stem from internal motivations. Family was also discovered to be central for Japanese LGBTQ+ youth, with coming out often immediately linked to marriage and children, contrasting with traditional parental expectations. Furthermore, traditional Japanese gender ideologies persist in Japanese discourse, reinforcing essentialism despite global shifts. Social media activism, while vital, faces limitations like commercial pressures.

  • On Social Contact: the Harassment Discourse in Contemporary Japan
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    01 Apr. 2021 - 31 Mar. 2024
    Nozawa Shunsuke
Cued by the ever-diversifying idioms of ‘harassment’ in contemporary Japanese society, the project has examined the discourse of improper contact as indicative of a metacommunicative struggle to articulate and negotiate boundaries of communication. The general research findings of the project is that the discourse of improper contact conjures up a hegemonic demand for liberal ideals in Japanese public life adhering to models of accountability and transparency, and that the performance of this discourse shapes assumptions about subjectivity, historicity, and the nature of liberal democratic communication.

  • A Study on the Interaction Between Service Industry and Media Language with Gender
Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
    01 Apr. 2016 - 31 Mar. 2019
    Furukawa Gavin; SUGIMORI Noriko
This research focuses on the relationship between gender, language, media and service labor utlizing the practices of young people doing josou or cross-dressing as the main focus. Our data sources included josou contests at Japanese universities, various media representations of those doing josou, and josou in service-related industries such as josou cafes where customers are waited on by young men in dresses. For young people participating in the practice of josou, we found that it had various meanings, functions, and consequences. While josou is a free expression of gender that critically and creatively reconstructs the normative gender and sexuality representations, it invites looks of unwanted curiosity and desire while commercializing and glorifying the consumption of gender and sexuality. This study revealed that practice of josou has multiple meanings in Japanese society and cannot be reduced to simple categorization through masculinity, femininity and sexual orientation.
