Lingnan (Guangdong and Guangxi in China) and northern Vietnam have a long history of relation dating back to ancient times. However, after Vietnam's independence from China, the history of both areas came to have completely different meanings for both Chinese and Vietnamese historians. This article is an attempt to discuss the history of both areas as an unity, based mainly on recent archaeological studies.
The topics discussed here are:
(1) The conquest of the Lingnan area by the Qin dynasty began within one year after the unification of the Warring States and that northern Vietnam was outside of the Qin's conquest area.
(2) The Nanyue kingdom established by Zhaotuo at the end of the third century B. C. in the Lingnan area had different control systems over different areas of the kingdom. Northern Vietnam was one of them.
(3) Except that several artifacts belong to early Shang dynasty, all of the early dated findings related to Chinese cultural tradition, such as a bronze pot, coins and mirrors unearthened in northern Vietnam, are dated the Nanyue period, the second century B. C.
(4) The significance of the Nanyue period as the starting point of political and cultural relation between Lingnan and northern Vietnam should be highly valued.
(5) Official seals for special titles and other archaeological facts showing as continuation of local tradition indicate that political control over native leaders and the cultural tradition since the Nanyue period basically continued in these areas, even after the conquest of Nanyue by emperor Wudi of the Han dynasty in 111 B. C. until the middle of the first century A. D.
Several historical issues during the first millennium A. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science：Grants-in-Aid for Scientific ResearchDate (from‐to) : 2015/06 -2020/03Author : Nakamura Shin'ichiIn this project, we elucidated sequences of pottery and jade articles based on their typological classification and established the chronology of the Neolithic period. Study on pottery showed that consumed food changed from rice porridge in the Hemudu Culture to steamed rice in the Liangzhu Culture, referring to ethnoarcheology and phospholipid analyses. Study on stone tools considered as tillage tools or harvest tools showed their function from the analyses of use traces and experimental archaeology. Study on jade articles showed that diffusion of Liangzhu Jade articles over a wide region triggered the prosperity of local cultures along the Yellow River. Analyses on lacquerware showed the ancient technique of lacquer coating and tree species used for the bodies. Finally, study of archeological sites revealed the structure of the Liangzhu Site Complex and the nearby hydraulic system and deepened our understanding of urbanism and emergent rice civilization in that site complex.

The Japanese-Vietnamese collaborative project has been carried out at the Tra Kieu site in central Vietnam, which has been identified as an old capital of Linyi. Two seasons’ excavations on the eastern rampart of Tra Kieu were conducted by the project team, with the intention of verifying the date and structure. As a result of this work, two rows of brick walls were unearthed with infill clay layers between them, regarded as the main structure of initial rampart dating from the latter half of the third century to the fourth century CE. This structure was subsequently enlarged at least twice, and these works probably ranged from the fourth to the beginning of the sixth century CE. These results of excavations have brought new perspectives on historical study of Linyi, and other ancient polities in Southeast Asia.

For each center, we made literary research and field surveys. Referring recent research of Chinese and other East/Southeast Asian capitals, we proposed a number of new understandings of the spatial segmentations and the disposition of functions outside the citadel wall of Thang Long. Besides, we collected abundant materials and information of other power centers, including those of Champa.
- 日本学術振興会：科学研究費助成事業Date (from‐to) : 2007 -2008Author : 津田 芳郎, 三木 聰, 吉開 将人, 松下 憲一, 山本 英史本年度は、当該研究課題に関する文献史料、特に一次史料の収集に努めるとともに、老字号研究の方法論と老字号の歴史研究の深化を企図して国際シンポジウムを開催し、多大なる成果を上げた。国内における史料の調査・収集としては、研究代表者津田芳郎が平成21年2月に東京大学東洋文化研究所において、また分担者三木聰が同20年11月に同研究所において、商家の家産分割、或いは公私合営化時期の老字号に関する史料の収集を行った。海外調査としては、平成20年9月下旬および平成21年3月の二度に亘って、主に北京・上海の档案館・図書館で実施した。両者とも、津田・三木の他に、分担者の吉開将人・松下憲一および研究協力者として慶應義塾大学教授山本英史が参加した。前者では、ほぼ北京市档案館において、北京の個別老字号関係の一次史料の収集に努めた。特に目立ったものは、解放後における老字号の経営および50年代半ばの公私合営化に関連する各種の調査資料であり、政治的変革期における老字号の浮沈等、興味深いデータを収集することができた。一方、後者では引き続き北京市楷案館でのデータ収集とともに、中国国家図書館・首都図書館・中国社会科学院法学研究所図書室等で当該周辺資料の調査を行った。ただ各機関での調査・収集がすべて順調に進んでいるわけではなく、外国人として地方性档案に接することの困難さ、或いは個別組織の運営の壁を意識せざるを得ない。平成20年12月19-20日には北海道大学文学研究科を会場として「16-20世紀中国の商業・商法・商店経営」と題する国際シンポジウム(研討会)を開催した。海外から中国南京大学教授范金民、台湾中央研究院近代史研究所副研究員巫仁恕、同歴史研究所副研究員邱澎生および同副研究員連玲玲の四氏を招き、国内の研究者との間で活発な議論を展開した。

The purpose of this study is an investigation of Pandu materials preserved in China and Taiwan. We, then, researched and compiled with almost all the Pandu materials of Ming-Qing periods not only almost all of bibliographical data, but also the detail information of these documents such as the places, periods and the contents that each documents has. We now present our research as this report titled "Bibliography of the additional Chinese Pandu Materials (the volume of the Ming-Qing Periods)'. Until now, Shunzo SHIGA, Atsutoshi HAMASHIMA and Shigemitsu MORITA said there are 71 different kinds for Pandu materials (16 ones in Ming and 55 ones in Qing). Though, our present research shows 171 kinds of those documents. 71 kinds of those documents are presented by former scholars and 100 kinds of them are newly presented by us. Now, we have the documents twice as much as we had. Our research for collecting Pandu materials have engaged in scholarly research between the years 2004 to 2006 at the following institutions; National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Law of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, National Library of China, Shanhai Library and Nanjing Library in Chinese main land; National Taiwan University Library, Fu Ssu-nien Library of the Academia Sinica and National Library of Taiwan in Taiwn; Institute for Research in Humanities of Kyoto University and the Institute of Oriental Culture of the University of Tokyo in Japan.

- 日本学術振興会：科学研究費助成事業Date (from‐to) : 1998 -1999Author : 吉開 将人本課題は、秦漢青銅器の銘文「秦漢金文」を中心に、中華人民共和国建国後50年間に新たに発見・収集された関連資料を総合的に整理し、当時の社会的諸制度を検討しようとするものである。本年度は、『考古』『文物』などの中央学術誌にこれまで掲載されてきた資料を集成する作業を進める一方で、現地中国の広東・広西に赴き(8月23日〜9月13日)、実地調査によってデータの不足を補った。論文としては、金文とならぶ同時代の金石文字資料である印章類の分析に重きを置き、昨年度に続く一連の成果を発表することができた。『東洋文化研究所紀要』に発表した「印からみた南越世界」(後篇)は、当時の政治制度とその理念を、地方政権の側から読み取ろうとした試みである。香港中文大学で開かれる「中国古璽印学国際研討会」(3月9日〜11日)において発表予定の「南越印章二題」は、その内容を中国の学界向けに再構成したものである。収集した資料全体の整理・分析はなおも継続中だが、現在までの基礎整理の結果から、生産・流通にとどまらず、官制・度量衡など当時の社会の各側面についてのいくつかの新たな切り口が読み取れる。体系的な論考として成果をまとめあげる一方で、そのデータをデータベースとして広く公開していく道を探ることが次の目標である。
