This research project defines contents tourism as “travel behaviour motivated fully or partially by narratives, characters, locations and other creative elements of popular culture forms, including film, television dramas, manga, anime, novels and computer games”. In over 100 research outputs, including 2 books and 2 journal special editions in English, the research group analyzed many examples of contents tourism in Japan. Using contents tourism theory and method as developed in Japan, the group also reexamined examples of tourism induced by popular culture outside Japan that had previously been discussed as examples of format-based tourism, e.g. film tourism. In the digital age, focusing on “the contents” and how they connect the three main tourism actors (fans, contents businesses, and local authorities) offers methodological advantages and is being increasingly adopted by international scholars. The project also offers policy recommendations for sustainable contents tourism.

1. Chariots of Fire, released in 1981, was the first of a series of films which came to be known as ‘heritage films’ released under the Thatcher administration. We examined several works which are regarded as representative of the genre, and discussed in detail the thematic, visual and ideological characteristics these films can be said to have in common.
2. We also read several leading works of criticism on the subject (including those of Andrew Higson), and carried out a detailed analysis and criticism of those works, based on our own theories which we developed in the course of our research. We were thus able to clarify the problems and weaknesses apparent in the definitions presented in those works and conducted research and discussions in attempt to come up with a new, valid definition of the heritage film.

Tourism has been established as social custom only on the various conditions brought about by the modernization of society. We seem to have to refer to these conditions when we try to analyze each tourism activity. In the times of full-blown development of modern society, England showed a tourism culture in which middle-class people began to seek out examples of natural scenery similar to the descriptions in the Italian landscape paintings. In this paper, applied analyses are attempted on the premise that such tourism practices are one of the model case of modern tourism phenomenon and that they had a close relationship with the dilemma between popularization of tourism and criticism against it.
The study focused on the historical changes and diversification of the national identity of Britain (Englishness/Britishness) from the Victorian Era onwards (to be specific, from the end of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century). By adopting such various viewpoints as the nation state, nationalism, the industrial revolution, the expansion of the city, imperialism, globalism, consumer culture, tourism studies, immigration, feminism and cultural policy, and by taking into account the relationship between Britain and the outside world, we have been able to confirm the diversity and historical background of the British national identity.
The purposes of this research are the following two points. The first point is clarifying functional coincidence of a "city" and the "public sphere" theoretically. The second point is examining the validity of the theoretical hypothesis concretely. It is the modern literature of Asia, the United States, and Europe which was mainly made the material on the occasion of the investigation. As one of the theoretical results, the function in which a "city" and the "public sphere" convert the meaning of foreign culture was clarified. This consideration is persuasive also when explaining computerization and media of a present age city. Moreover, it was verified that formation of literature-media and establishment of the editorial rights of media were historically important for development in the public area. On the other hand, concrete research on the development and the change in the public area in the literary work of Asia and the West was also performed. Consequently, it was not concerned with the area, but the public space born to the city expanded social communication, and having contributed to establishment of a modern system became clear. However, it can also be pointed out that the small however reevaluation in the familiar public sphere is also progressing as a present-day tendency.
