Scientific journal, This study investigated seasonal and interannual patterns of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and evapotranspiration (ET) obtained at a larch-dominated forest in northern Mongolia between 2010–2012 and 2022–2024. Seasonal and interannual variability in both fluxes has been observed; years with earlier leaf-out and higher early-season leaf area index (LAI) resulted in higher CO₂ uptake, while wetter summers promoted higher ET. Bayesian regression analysis revealed a shift in the relative influence of environmental drivers in the two periods. The soil water effect is remarkable in summer ET variation in previous relatively drier years. In contrast, surface soil temperature and solar radiation have become more influential than soil water in recent years. LAI emerged as a significant driver of NEE only in the latter period, suggesting improved photosynthetic responsiveness under favorable water conditions. These results indicate the sensitivity of larch ecosystems to decadal scale climate variability and suggest the importance of phenological dynamics and soil–plant–atmosphere interactions. Although these changes were likely within the natural variability range, they indicate the need for sustained monitoring. Long-term, interdisciplinary studies will be essential to understand the ecosystem's water–carbon coupling in the forest–steppe transition zone.

    Japanese,

Tracer concentrations of spring discharges were analyzed to detect ground ice melting at discontinuous permafrost zone of northern Mongolia. Tritium and chlorofluorocarbons were used as the transient tracers. Five spring discharges were selected and the water samples were collected at six times from August 2015 to April 2018. The concentrations at two thermokarst landscapes were very low. However, those time series showed gradual increase. This implied that recently recharged rainwater began to contribute to the spring discharges at the thermokarst sites. On the contrary, tracer concentrations in non-thermokarst sites were higher, and gradual decreases were observed. This might be due to seasonal change in contributions of recently recharged rainwater to the spring discharges at the non-thermokarst sites. Atmospheric water budget analysis indicated that net precipitation was almost zero in the region. Therefore, net recharge could be also negligible and thus spring discharge contained large amount of ground ice-melt water.

Japanese, In order to detect ground ice melting in an isolated permafrost zone of Mongolia, groundwater age was determined around the Khangai Mountains by the use of transient tracers of tritium and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Spring water samples were collected from August 2015 to April 2018, at several discharge sites including two thermokarst landscapes. Tritium and CFCs concentrations of the spring water discharges at the two thermokarst landscapes were very low. An atmospheric water budget analysis indicated that net precipitation (i.e. net recharge to the groundwater zone) was almost zero at the southern part of the Khangai Mountains. Thus, it was implied that one of the spring water at the thermokarst site contained large amount of ground ice-melt water. Additionally, because the CFCs concentrations at the thermokarst site have been decreasing gradually, the permafrost thawing is now progressive.

Japanese, A core observatory satellite of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) has been launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in February 2014. The satellite can newly observe both liquid and solid precipitation in the high latitude region. Verification of this data is indispensable for improving observation accuracy toward utilization for hydrological cycle and water resource researches in the land area of cold region. This research project "NEPTUNE" aims for comprehensive validation of summer precipitation (rain), winter precipitation (snow fall) and their spatial distribution based on ground truth data obtained by our observation network which we will improve in Northeast Eurasia (Hokkaido, Mongolia and East Siberia), and combining other satellite data analyses. In addition, the project extends to clarify possibilities of GPM data for future applied research using modelling techniques of land surface processes, distributed river runoff, and regional climate.

English, Permafrost has been degrading over large areas of the world. Hence, organizing and sustaining continuous observations to monitor the long-term thermal state of permafrost at various locations is important. Mongolia, southern fringe of the Siberian permafrost region, is characterized by arid, mountainous land underlain mainly by sporadic-to-continuous permafrost. This permafrost has temperatures close to 0°C and hence is highly vulnerable to climate-induced warming. We drilled new research boreholes and evaluated the thermal states for better understanding of the thermal states of Mongolian permafrost. I discuss their decadal changes based on the currently available thermal data from 48 research boreholes.

    III.

Japanese, Scientific journal, The largest cryospheric components on Earth are the frozen grounds that occupy approximately 60% of the northern hemispheric land areas; these regions influence climates and water cycles on various spatio-temporal scales. Nevertheless, many hydro-meteorological studies on cold regions have only implicitly considered frozen ground processes. This situation requires a thorough change in the light of recent global warming issues; future studies should focus on more explicit representations of frozen grounds and their interrelation to the climate, meteorology, and hydrology. English, Frozen ground in discontinuous permafrost zones is characterized by complicated spatial distribution and large seasonal fluctuations in unfrozen water contents.Direct current(DC)resistivity imaging performed in the northeastern Mongolia, Daisetsu Mountains of northern Japan and Kanchanjunga Himal of eastern Nepal demonstrate this technique as an effective method for observing frozen ground characteristics which supplemented with additional observation such as ground temperature measurements.DC resistivity imaging is shown to be useful for delineating isolated frozen ground and buried ice bodies in the areas with large topographic and subsurface inhomogeneties.Seasonal changes in resistivity values at the Mongolian site are related to the spatio-temporal changes in soil water condition both in the active and upper layers of the permafrost. These are advantages unique to DC resistivity imaging that are not found with conventional methods such as one-dimensional geophysical soundings of plane-layer approximations, excavation and time-domain reflectometry(TDR)measurements.

, The Association of Japanese Geographers, Japanese

Doghole

, The Association of Japanese Geographers, Japanese

, THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF HYDROLOGY AND WATER RESOURCES, Japanese

, The Association of Japanese Geographers, Japanese

, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN

, The Association of Japanese Geographers, Japanese

THE ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN

The Association of Japanese Geographers, Japanese

Year-round air and ground-surface temperature-monitoring indicated occurrences of mountain permafrost in the Hidaka Mountains, southern Hokkaido. The results of air temperature monitoring indicated that the temperature condition in the summit areas of the Hidaka Mountains is similar to that of the lower marginal limit of the discontinuous permafrost zone. Monitoring of the ground-surface temperatures shows that ground thermal regimes vary spatially with snow cover duration and thicknesses, and surficial materials. The permafrost underlies coarse blocky materials covered with thick seasonal snow cover within the Pleistocene cirques. These conditions suggest that mountain permafrost in the Hidaka Mountains is categorized as Mountain Side Permafrost (MSP), which is found beneath mountain slopes covered with thick seasonal snow cover where the mean annual air temperature is lower 0°C. The major controls on permafrost development and preservation are ground cooling before the onset of snow accumulations and cold air concentration through blocky materials. The presence of funnels emitting warm air throughout winter indicates that the cold air circulation plays an important role in the development and the preservation of MSP., Tokyo Geographical Society, Japanese
  • Depth hoar as a proxy for the ground temperature transition in winter

We found a good correlation (R2=0.79) between the BTS (Basal Temperature of Snow) value and thickness of the depth hoar layer in a block slope at Mt. Higashi-nupukaushinupuri (1251 m a.s.l.), central Hokkaido. Temperature gradients of snow were estimated from air temperature and snow depth data in the nearest meteorological station. Maximum temperature gradients appeared in December, when snow cover was thin. This fact suggests that the temperature gradients in December can promote growing of depth hoar layers not only in the high BTS condition, but also where BTS is low.

We clarified recent variations in the atmospheric-terrestrial water cycle, vegetation conditions, permafrost conditions, and greenhouse gas emission and/or absorption in northern Eurasia. We developed an integrated water cycle model to track the movement of water by source. And by utilizing satellite remote sensing data, we finally created time-series maps of inundation areas and areas of vegetation change in the region. Modulations in the atmospheric-terrestrial water cycle were found during the snowmelt season and the late warm season. It was also found that climate changes during these seasons have a significant impact on the amount of carbon dioxide emission and/or absorption in the region.

Permafrost plays an important roles for sustaining local ecosystem service since it produces water rich soils, allowing forest growth and river discharges even under the arid climatic conditions. We created high resolutive permafrost maps over Mongolia, and reconstructed transition of spring water since 1960s. The permafrost distribution was modelled with transient heat conduction and statistical-stochastic ways. The past and present states of spring activities were investigated by government maps published in 1960s, satellite images, and field surveys.
Validation with deep ground temperature at multiple points showed good agreement between modelled distribution and the observations. However, they disagreed over the southern limit permafrost with ground temperature close to 0 degree. These regions overlap well with the regions experiencing significant degradation of spring water. Further researches i.e., model improvement, increasing the number of field evidences are required.

This study aims to enhance conceptual framework for displaying the distribution of invisible permafrost, discontinuously distributed over southern marginal zone of Eurasian permafrost, Mongolia. Permafrost distribution is strongly controlled by several geographic factors such as latitudes, altitude, land cover type, and topographic concavities both in domestic and local scales. We have acquired numerous evidences related to permafrost yes/no through ground temperature measurements, and analyzed correlation among them through the multivariate analysis. Statistical model, representing relation between permafrost occurrence and geographical parameters was developed. The model is not only for predicting future permafrost dynamics but for quantitative analysis of degrading ecosystem services such as forest and river discharge.

This study aims to clarify thermal state of permafrost especially on Mongolia, Svalbard and Japanese high mountains under the umbrella of global permafrost network. In Mongolia we found occurrences of the colder permafrost on the northerner territories and large spatial differences in temperatures even within small areas. We deduced that permafrost warming is strongly controlled by the rate of unfrozen water contents. Recently the international permafrost association has paid special attention of Mongolian permafrost observatories, since number of research borehole has been significantly increased by our study. The deepest, 10m-permafrost-research-borehole among Japan has been installed on the permafrost, Daisetsu Mountains, Hokkaido. The low ground temperature, -2℃ at 10m, indicate the presence of thermally stable permafrost. The modeling schemes were improved especially for soil freezing and thawing processes in the GCM, and have been applied to reconstruct paleo-permafrost distribution. For verification we referred the distribution of fossil periglacial phenomena. The realistic verification needs for deeper understanding of concurrent relation between climate and periglacial processes. In this context we studied concurrent climatic situations for the frost wedge and frost creep, and paleo-permafrost development of pingo.
