  • Monte Carlo study on critical exponents of the classical Heisenberg model in ferromagnetic icosahedral quasicrystal

English, Scientific journal, Quasicrystals (QCs) lack three-dimensional periodicity of atomic arrangement but possess long-range structural order, which are distinct from periodic crystals and random systems. Here, we show how the ferromagnetic (FM) order arises in the icosahedral QC (i-QC) on the basis of the Monte Carlo simulation of the Heisenberg model on the Yb lattice of Cd 5.7 Yb composed of regular icosahedrons. By finite-size scaling of the Monte Carlo data, we identified the critical exponents of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and spin correlation length, β = 0.508 ( 30 ) ,   γ = 1.361 ( 59 ) , and ν = 0.792 ( 17 ) , respectively. We confirmed that our data satisfy the hyperscaling relation and estimated the other critical exponents α = − 0.376 ( 51 ) ,   δ = 3.68 ( 23 ) , and η = 0.282 ( 65 ) . These results show a universality class inherent in the i-QC, which is different from those in periodic magnets and spin glasses. In the i-QC, each Yb site at vertices of the regular icosahedrons is classified into eight classes with respect to the coordination numbers of the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor bonds. We revealed the FM-transition mechanism by showing that the difference in the local environment of each site is governed by cooperative evolution of spin correlations upon cooling, giving rise to the critical phenomena.

English, Scientific journal, Icosahedrite, natural icosahedral Al63Cu24Fe13, was discovered in a meteorite about 15 years ago. We have carried out a high-resolution X-ray diffraction study on a sample of this meteoritic mineral at the ESRF. The diffraction pattern turned out to be identical to an intermediate phase observed in synthetic i-AlCuFe during the transformation from the quasicrystalline state to a periodic rhombohedral phase. This particular natural Al63Cu24Fe13 grain is an icosahedral quasicrystal on which a modulation by six cosine waves propagating along the fivefold axes is superimposed, with a wavelength of about 20 nm and a polarization in the phason/perpendicular space. By examining the thermodynamic conditions for producing this modulated icosahedral phase at high pressure in the laboratory, we may gain insights into the formation process of the Khatyrka meteorite., 44581838;44584968

English, Scientific journal, A 6D structure model for face-centred icosahedral quasicrystals consisting of so-called pseudo-Mackay and mini-Bergman-type atomic clusters is proposed based on the structure model of the Al69.1Pd22Cr2.1Fe6.8 3/2 cubic approximant crystal (with space group Pa 3, a = 40.5 Å) [Fujita et al. (2013). Acta Cryst. A69, 322–340]. The cluster centres form an icosahedral close sphere packing generated by the occupation domains similar to those in the model proposed by Katz & Gratias [J. Non-Cryst. Solids (1993), 153–154, 187–195], but their size is smaller by a factor τ2 [τ = (1 + (5)1/2)/2]. The clusters cover approximately 99.46% of the atomic structure, and the cluster arrangement exhibits 15 and 19 different local configurations, respectively, for the pseudo-Mackay and mini-Bergman-type clusters. The occupation domains that generate cluster shells are modelled and discussed in terms of structural disorder and local reorganization of the cluster arrangements (phason flip).

Scientific journal, Single crystals of five compounds with approximate compositions ∼Ru16(Al0.78Si0.22)47, (I), ∼Ru9(Al0.70Si0.30)32, (II), ∼Ru10(Al0.67Si0.33)41, (III), ∼Ru(Al0.57Si0.43)5, (IV), and ∼Ru2(Al0.46Si0.54)9, (V), were obtained from polycrystalline lumps mainly composed of the target compounds, and their crystal structures were determined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of (I) can be related to that of a cubic rational crystalline approximant to an icosahedral quasicrystal through crystallographic shear and then unit-cell twinning. The crystal structure of (II) is isotypic with that of a phase with composition ∼Fe9(Al,Si)32. The crystal structure of (III) is comprised of edge-sharing Ru(Al,Si)9–11 polyhedra with disordered chains along edges of polyhedra. The crystal structure of (IV) is of the LiIrSn4 type. The crystal structure of (V) can be viewed as a crystallographic shear structure derived from that of (IV).

    Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2461, 1, 011001, 011001, IOP Publishing, 01 Mar. 2023
English, Scientific journal, Aperiodic 2022, the 10th International Conference on Aperiodic Crystals, was held as a hybrid type conference on June 20-24, 2022, in Akira Suzuki Hall of Sapporo campus at Hokkaido University, Japan. Aperiodic 2022 is the latest in a series of conferences supported by the Commission on Aperiodic Crystals (CAC) of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). These conferences were held essentially every three years, with the most recent meetings in Ames Iowa (the USA, 2018), Prague (Czech Republic, 2015), Cairns (Australia, 2012), Liverpool (UK, 2009), Zao (Japan, 2006), Belo Horizonte (Brazil, 2003) and Nijmegen (The Netherlands, 2000). Aperiodic 2022 was the second of this series held in Japan. The Aperiodic conference series is itself the successor to a series of Conferences on Modulated Structures, Polytypes and Quasicrystals (MOSPOQ), which were held in Marseilles (France, 1984), Wroclaw (Poland, 1986), Varanasi (India, 1988) and Balatonszeplak (Hungary, 1991). This time, Aperiodic 2022 was held under the auspices of Hypermaterials project, running in Japan since 2019 for 5 years, that includes studies of quasicrystals, approximants and incommensurate structures (https://www.rs.tus.ac.jp/hypermaterials/en/index.html).

Although under difficult circumstances, with the COVID19 pandemic was not yet fully contained, Aperiodic 2022 attracted 114 participants from 16 countries (37 onsite and 77 online). A particular feature of the Aperiodic Conference series is its interdisciplinary character. The range of disciplines of participants included mathematics, physics, crystallography and materials science.

The program, which ran from Monday morning until Friday afternoon, was scheduled by considering the time difference between Japan and Europe. It comprised 14 invited and 36 contributed talks, and 36 posters (10 onsite). The Student Award for Outstanding Oral Presentation at the 10th International Conference on Aperiodic Crystals was given to Chiara Moretti (ENS de Lyon, France) for her presentation Self-assembly of nanoparticles: from periodic superlattices to quasicrystal phase. The prize came with a cash prize of 30,000 JPY with honorable certificate.

It was not possible to organize Aperiodic 2022 without help and support of many people. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the member of Local Organizing Committee, Program Committee, Commission on Aperiodic Crystals of IUCr and Hypermaterials Project, we would also like to extend our special thanks to the reviewers for their help in the paper view process. Last but not least, we would like to thank all the participants, onsite or online, for their beautiful presentations and exciting discussions. Aperiodic 2022 was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP19H05817.

Scientific journal, In this study, the atomic structure of the ternary icosahedral ZnMgTm quasicrystal (QC) is investigated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure is found to be a member of the Bergman QC family, frequently found in Zn–Mg–rare-earth systems. Theab initiostructure solution was obtained by the use of theSuperflipsoftware. The infinite structure model was founded on the atomic decoration of two golden rhombohedra, with an edge length of 21.7 Å, constituting the Ammann–Kramer–Neri tiling. The refined structure converged well with the experimental diffraction diagram, with the crystallographicRfactor equal to 9.8%. The Bergman clusters were found to be bonded by four possible linkages. Only two linkages, bandc, are detected in approximant crystals and are employed to model the icosahedral QCs in the cluster approach known for the CdYb Tsai-type QC. Additional shortbandalinkages are found in this study. Short interatomic distances are not generated by those linkages due to the systematic absence of atoms and the formation of split atomic positions. The presence of four linkages allows the structure to be pictured as a complete covering by rhombic triacontahedral clusters and consequently there is no need to define the interstitial part of the structure (i.e.that outside the cluster). The 6D embedding of the solved structure is discussed for the final verification of the model.

Japanese, A novel density modification method has been applied to phase reconstruction of X-ray single crystal data of quasicrystals. This is based on the low density elimination (LDE) method that is an ab initio structure determination method for crystals in the real space. The location, size andshape of the occupation domains of quasicrystals in the n-dimensional (nD) unit cell are obtained without a prioi model structure. Therefore, the LDE method can be a substitute for the direct method for quasicrystals that are described as nD crystals. The structure solution can easily be found in the trial sets (normally 100 sets) and is confirmed by the subsequent analysis. The result is used as a starting model for constructing a detailed structure model of quasicrystals. The solution of several qusicrystalline structures including a model quasicrystal structure are exemplified.

The purpose of this study was to explore and establish conditions for growing single quasicrystal samples of icosahedral quasicrystals, to grow pure single quasicrystal samples, and to elucidate the atomic structure of quasicrystals with unknown structure by crystal structure analysis using these samples. In this study, we clarified the conditions for growing good quality single quasicrystals of Al-Cu-Ru icosahedral quasicrystals by the self-flux method. We have also succeeded in analyzing the structure of Zn-Mg-Tm icosahedral quasicrystals. We also found a new low-order approximant in the Al-Zn-Mg system, which has never been reported as an approximant of icosahedral quasicrystals.

We have proposed a new mechanism for creation of catalytically active sites in porous Au. The existence of low-coordinated atomic sites on the surface is essential for understanding the catalytic activity of nanostructured Au. Samples of porous Au prepared by leaching Al2Au exhibit high catalytic activity towards CO oxidation. The presence of quite common nano-twins in the fcc lattice of porous Au significantly correlates with the catalytic activity. On the {211} surfaces of porous Au the twin boundaries can form chains of atoms with coordination number CN=6, which is denoted as W-chains. In contrast to the usually considered isolated low-coordinated active sites in Au as the corners of nanoparticles or the kinks on stepped of surfaces the W-chains form long rows of active Au sites. DFT calculations show that on the W-chains O2 chemisorbs and activated.

Quasicrystal is distinguished from a conventional, periodic crystal. Here, periodicity is a mathemtical concept and plays an important role in condensed matter physics. In this project, we have revealed a novel mechanism of the quantum critical phenomenon observed in a rare-earth-based quasicrystal. We have also succeeded in, for the first time, discovering superconductivity in quasicrystals.

In this project, experimental and theoretical investigations have been conducted focusing on icosahedral quasicrystals containing rare-earth elements, in order to gain structural knowledge about unsolved Tsai-type icosahedral quasicrystals. Several icosahedral quasicrystal structures, which include R-Cd(R=Gd,Dy,Tm), Yb-Cd-Mg, and Sc-Zn icosahedral quasicrystls, have been determined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In addition, it has been revealed that a substantial amount of diffuse scattering with anisotropic distribution, located around the strong Bragg peaks, observed in Sc-Zn icosahedral quasicrystls can be fully interpreted as resulting from phason fluctuations associated with the chemical disorder of Sc sites form an absolute measurement of diffuse X-ray scattering.

Although more than 30 years have passed since quasicrystals were discovered, their structural details have remained to be unclarified to a large extent posing one of the greatest mysteries in materials science. In order to elucidate the structure of Al-based icosahedral quasicrystals, we first aim at searching for novel approximant phases, namely crystals with similar local structures to that of the quasicrystals. Then we attempt to analyze the structure of new approximants using single-crystal X-ray diffraction to extract any information regarding the structural propserties of the quasicrystals. Overall, these attempts culminate in the discoveries of a few novel approximant crystals, whereas their structures turn out to be composed of two kinds of clusters forming a dense packing. We also propose a new theoretical model describing the arrangement of the clusters in the quasicrystals.

In this project, experimental and theoretical investigations have been performed focusing on decagonal quasicrystals in order to make progress on the structure analysis of unsolved quasicrystals. Single crystals of an approximant crystal to decagonal quasicrystals in the Al-Pd-Ru system have been grown successfully. Average structure of the Zn-Mg-Dy decagonal quasicrystal has been determined by means of five-dimensional structure analysis. A feasible five-dimensional structure model for an Al-Cu-Rh decagonal quasicrystal was constructed. Multiple diffraction phenomena in an Al-Cu-Ru icosahedral quasicrystal have been evaluated by using an originally developed simulation code, which is based on the kinematical theory for X-ray diffraction.

To give the basis of the aperiodic-crystal engineering, for quasicrystals and related approximant crystals, single crystal growths and crystal structure analyses have been attempted in several alloy systems. Single crystals, with a typical size of several millimeters of a decagonal phase with 1.6 nm periodicity and approximant crystals in the Al-Ni-Ru system were grown successfully by the flux method. Single crystals of a higher-order, 3/2-2/1, approximant to a decagonal phase with 1.2 nm periodicity have also been grown successfully. The flux method makes possible to grow single crystals of Al-based quasicrystals, which contain high-melting-point metal as constituent elements, at relatively low-temperatures.

The goal of this research project was to understand the "Order and Disorder, or Complexity" created in various novel "2-D Solids" formed at interfaces. It has been investigated from both the structural and thermodynamic aspects. Three types of condensed phases have been studied; (a) 2-D solids formed at gas-solid interfaces, (b) 2-D solids formed at solid-liquid interfaces, and (c) 2-D ice crystals formed during the initial crystallization process. We applied scanning probe microscope as well as calorimetry and X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques. The followings are the results obtained in this year.
1.With scanning probe microscope, we tried to observe the structure of a couple of liquid-crystalline materials adsorbed on the surface of graphite (and mica) under a vacuum at the temperature ranging from 150 K to 400 K. While we met various problems in obtaining the real feature, this technique certainly became one of our powerful methods to study those systems.
2.X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques have been continuously applied to those systems successfully. We- published a paper on this. As an extension of this research, we have started another project to see the structure of perfluoroalkane monolayers adsorbed on graphite.
3.For the glycerol/water system, we published one paper and continue to study the thermodynamic feature at very low temperature down to 0.4 K. The crystallization of cubic ice and hexagonal ice from the mixture is going to be very interesting, which may be very important also from the practical point of view.
