樹木の最外層を構成する樹皮を研究対象に、その解剖学的・化学的性質や機能について、生物学的視点から本質的な理解を深める研究を行っています。光学顕微鏡や電子顕微鏡による組織構造・微細構造の観察、微生物に対する抗菌試験、さらには成分分析による抗菌成分の同定などの実験手法を駆使し、樹皮のミクロ世界をありのままに解析することで、樹皮の主要な機能である微生物に対するバリア機構の解明を目指しています。こうして得られた基礎科学的知見に基づき、木質バイオマスがもつ独自の特性を活かした、従来にない高機能材料の設計と開発にも取り組んでいます。
My research focuses on the bark, the outermost layer of trees, aiming to gain a fundamental understanding of its anatomical and chemical properties and functions from a biological perspective. Using techniques such as optical and electron microscopy to observe tissue and ultrastructure, antifungal assays, and chemical analyses to identify antifungal compounds, I analyze the microscopic world of bark as it truly is. Through this approach, I aim to elucidate the defense mechanism of bark against fungal invasion. Based on these fundamental insights, I also work on designing and developing novel materials that harness the unique properties of lignocellulosic biomass.
