This study aimed to illustrate the conditions under which cultural diversity enhances workgroup creativity. It does so by investigating the impact of ethnic diversity on workgroup creativity through the mediating mechanisms of cognitive diversity and information elaboration, while also exploring the role of inclusive leadership in this process.
Design/methodology/approach
Multi-source data was collected from a sample of 338 employees nested within 56 workgroups across three distinct organizations. Conditional process analysis was used to empirically test the proposed hypotheses.
Findings
The results show that ethnic diversity, a surface-level cultural attribute, contributed to diversity in deep-level cognitive resources, and that workgroups were able to capitalize on these variations in deep-level cognitive resources to enhance their creativity when they engaged in the elaboration of task-relevant information. Results also demonstrated that the effective management of workgroup processes through inclusive leadership helped materialize the performance-promoting effects of cultural diversity. Overall, the findings support the notion that cultural diversity is indeed beneficial to workgroups.
Originality/value
Prior research has typically examined cultural diversity in workgroups from the perspective of either surface-level or deep-level cultural attributes, leading to conflicting findings. Our study takes a multifaceted approach to cultural diversity and its influence on workgroup creativity, offering a more nuanced understanding. Additionally, by integrating the concept of inclusive leadership, a relatively new conceptualization of leadership specifically relevant to diverse workgroups, we clarified strategies for fostering positive workgroup performance. - Continuous and divergent changes in business models

English, Scientific journal,Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how change leadership activities help bring about employee support for planned organizational change.Design/methodology/approach Using a non-experimental quantitative research design, and a self-administered Likert-type questionnaire survey, the study sourced data from employees in an organization undergoing significant change. Data analysis was by structural equation modeling (SEM).Findings Change leadership behaviors bearing on; visioning, communication, participation, support and concern for change participants' interests were found to be of significant importance in ensuring employee buy-in and support for planned change efforts. Although change leadership had no direct effect on employees' behavioral intentions to support change, it was strongly related to employee cognitive appraisal of change. The relationship between change leadership and employee behavioral intentions to support planned change was serially mediated by employee cognitive appraisal and emotional response toward the planned change event.Practical implications In appraising planned organizational change efforts, managers tend to focus on employee behaviors toward the change instead of conditions that drive such behaviors. This study underscores the need to focus on employee attitudes as precursors to desired behavior toward change.Originality/value Prior research suggests that change leadership behaviors affect employee attitudinal reactions to change but yet lacked empirical validation. By applying a multidimensional approach to attitude and investigating its hierarchy of effects, this study enhanced our accuracy in explaining the influence change leadership has on employee attitudinal support for change. - The relationship between perceptions of office space and communication within the organization

, 33941170 - Historical Development of Empirical Research on the Japanese Workplace Design: Towards Better Workplace Environment

The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that affect building community and maintaining/enhancing sustainability in coworking spaces, based on an almost complete enumeration which could help us grasp a true measure of the phenomenon. Community and sustainability could be key issues on coworking spaces. However, even empirical research dealing with both issues as well as discussions on the management of them is not hardly found while studies focusing on the spaces have steadily been accumulated mainly from the viewpoint of community such as user interaction. Therefore, we analyze the data obtained from 168 out of 365 spaces that are nearly all the operating coworking spaces in Japan (as of July 2014). As a result of that, we showoverall influential relationships on community and sustainability of the spaces, and present three types of the factors influencing those issues, which are named as alternative-oriented, balance-oriented, and trade-off., Faculty of Economics and Business, Hokkaido University, English, Report scientific journal, 33941166;33941196 - What contributes to community building and sustainability enhancement in coworking spaces?

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the actual condition of coworking spaces in Japan, based on a questionnaire survey. A way of working called "coworking" and a place for such work called "coworking space" have been attracting attention in recent years because they may provide a more flexible work style, diverse members to interact with, and open spaces than are experienced when working in a specific company or corporate office. However, we still have not acquired the whole picture of coworking and coworking spaces because of insufficiency of the comprehensive research. Thus, we attempt to shed some light on the current status of coworking spaces in the following steps. Firstly, we review previous studies about coworking. Secondly, we will present the current status and issues of coworking spaces, based on a questionnaire survey conducted among almost all coworking spaces operating in Japan. Finally, we consider the significance of our findings, comparing with those in previous studies., Graduate School of Economics and Business Administration, Hokkaido University, English, Report research institution, 33941166;33941196 - An activity Process of Community Development: A Case Study of Furano Omelette Curry

The purpose of this paper is to analyze correlations about the actual condition of coworking spaces in Japan, based on a questionnaire survey. A way of working called "coworking" and a place for such work called "coworking space" have been attracting attention in recent years because they may provide a more flexible work style, diverse members to interact with, and open spaces than are experienced when working in a specific company or corporate office. However, the understanding of this phenomenon is insufficient. There is still hardly any empirical research that discusses the actual conditions of coworking and coworking spaces especially in Japan, though we can find some implicative descriptive papers on this phenomenon. Thus, we attempt to shed some light on the current status of coworking spaces in the following steps. Firstly, we review previous studies about coworking, focusing primarily on the annual Global Coworking Survey conducted around the world. Secondly, we show the result of correlation analysis based on a questionnaire survey conducted among almost all coworking spaces operating in Japan from six viewpoints: facility, management organization, business strategy, activity, space users, and performance., Graduate School of Economics and Business Administration, Hokkaido University, English, Report research institution, 33941166;33941196 - Management Process of Coworking Space in Japan : The Case of 7F (nana-efu)

In this research project, we attempted to identify innovation process in shared and co-creation spaces such as coworking spaces. To achieve this purpose, we took the following steps. Firstly, a database of shared and co-creation spaces, which is estimated to cover almost all the spaces in Japan, was created. Secondly, a nationwide questionnaire survey was conducted based on this database.
In addition, based on the data, we identified the characteristics of shared and co-creation spaces, and investigated the factors that contribute to the outcomes of coworking spaces. These studies attempted to elucidate the innovation activities in the spaces from the macro level. Furthermore, a single case study was conducted as a preliminary investigation to understand interactions of coworking space users.

The purpose of this research is to present the value creation mechanism of co-working. Using qualitative methods including interviews and a quantitative method so-called large-scale survey, we conducted research using the following procedure.
First of all, (1) the actual state of co-working (what kind of "values" are created, at the "co-working place," " by what kind of "entity," and under what what kind of "relationship"?, and finally what one can comprehensively understand what co-working is? In addition, (2) trying to clarify what value creation mechanism of co-working is.As a result, we gained knowledge on facilities, operational organization, strategy, activities, users and perfomances.

First, We defined the global innovation activiteis and constructed hypotheses by surveying the relevant literature. Second, we described the research methods and constructed research framework on global innovation activities. Third, we conducted emprical research (quantitative research and qalitative research) on global innovation activities based on the research framework. Finally, we discussed about the findings and analysed the research results including the theoretical contributions, managerial implications, and observations for future research.

In the study, (1) we review previous research on the design of the Japanese office space and (2) as an typical example of the space with openness and flexibility to use, we focus on coworking spaces.
(1) In the study on the design of the Japanese office space, from the 1980s to the 2000s, researchers have pursued mainly space comfortability and functionality. And, we show that since 2000, knowledge creation theory primarily by management scholars has focused on office space design to facilitate knowledge creation process.
(2) In the study on coworking spaces, we revealed the characteristics of the Japanese coworking space from six perspectives, namely, facility, management organization, strategy, user, activity, performance. And we focused on the coworking space, which has the largest number of users in Japan, to describe the trial and error process the space managers are struggling to make the desirable space for users.

This study empirically shows the relation between physical features of the office space and communication patterns. Major findings are as follows. 1. The frequency of face to face communications decreases intensely by the distance of the organization member. 2. The influence of the distance cannot be decreased by the organization design.
