    Scientific journal, Abstract

Ammonium release (ammonification) and uptake (immobilization) by soil microbial communities are fundamental processes of forest nitrogen (N) cycling, representing major N fluxes that influence plant productivity and ecosystem N retention. However, because these processes involve diverse metabolic pathways distributed across many taxa, they are difficult to evaluate using gene‐ or taxon‐specific approaches, and it remains unclear how microbial community structure governs the patterns of these processes. In this study, we examined how the abundance, taxonomic composition, richness, and metabolic capabilities of microbial communities regulate ammonium‐related N cycling processes across a wide range of forests in Japan, using rRNA gene sequencing and quantification, shotgun metagenomics, and ¹⁵N tracer assays. Across the full gradients of soil pH and N content, microbial abundance was primarily correlated with the absolute rates of N cycling processes, while taxonomic composition and richness were more strongly correlated with N allocation—that is, the balance among ammonium release, ammonium uptake, and subsequent nitrification. Soils with higher pH supported taxonomic compositions linked to enhanced ammonium release and nitrification, whereas lower‐pH soils hosted compositions associated with greater ammonium uptake and retention. Notably, the regulatory influence of taxonomic composition on N allocation was pronounced within the higher‐pH range but diminished within the lower‐pH range. Despite this environmental dependency, N allocation by soil microbial communities was ultimately constrained by their overall metabolic capabilities. In higher‐pH soils, microbial communities were enriched in metabolic functions related to nutrient acquisition and respiratory N transformations, supporting increased ammonium release and N mobility. By contrast, microbial communities in lower‐pH soils were enriched in stress‐adaptive functions, which promoted ammonium retention and limited N transformations—thereby diminishing the regulatory influence in N cycling. Together, our findings provide a mechanistic understanding of how microbial community structure and metabolic capabilities regulate ammonium‐related N cycling processes across forests under varying environmental conditions.

    English, Scientific journal, Abstract

Concerns have been raised regarding the degradation of stream water quality due to the excessive influx of atmospheric deposition. This study aimed to reveal the long‐term variation in stream water chemistry in approximately 40 forested small watersheds in the northern Kanto region, based on 3 surveys conducted in 1991–1992, 2006–2007, and 2022. The factors influencing each dissolved element were investigated. Regarding long‐term variations in stream water chemistry, relatively stable concentrations of cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+) and SiO2 were observed. However, the concentrations of anions (Cl, , and ) decreased due to the improvement in the atmospheric environment and the diminishing effect of fertilization. Furthermore, the recent increase in stream water pH was attributed to an increase in bicarbonate (), compensating for the decrease in anion concentrations relative to cations. Geology was the most significant factor for inter‐watershed variations in cations and SiO2, and this influence remained relatively constant over 30 years. Forest practices, especially fertilization, had a significant effect on Cl and , and contributed to higher concentrations in the fertilized watersheds than in the non‐fertilized watersheds over the 15 years following fertilization. Sulfate deposition was a significant influencing factor for , and the concentration fluctuated under long‐term variations in deposition over the past 30 years. Despite substantial acid deposition in the study area, the absence of stream water acidification could be attributed to the abundant cation supply from bedrock and volcanic ash, which underwent weathering processes., 13416941

English, Research institution, Estimation of the nutrient accumulation rate in tree biomass is important for understanding the nutrient budgets of forest ecosystems but choosing a suitable method can be challenging. In this study, we compared the nutrient budgets of four forest ecosystems in Japan (Oyasan, Kamigamo, Kiryu, and Takatori) and estimated the nutrient accumulation rates in tree biomass using two methods. For short-term estimates, the nutrient content of tree biomass was measured at two points in time over several years; for long-term estimates, the nutrient content was divided by forest age. The nutrient accumulation rates estimated using the long-term method was lower than those using the short-term method. Weathering rates for potassium, magnesium, and calcium estimated using the long-term method were lower than those using the short-term method. Weathering rates determined using the short-term method were high and could be overestimates in nutrient-limited forests. Soil nitrogen release values were lower with the longterm method than those with the short-term method and could be overestimated when using the latter method in nitrogen-limited watersheds. In conclusion, weathering rates and soil nitrogen release values determined using the long-term method are useful for assessing the sustainability of nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems although the rate of nutrient accumulation in tree biomass is assumed to be constant.

Japanese, Scientific journal, In recent years, forest leaf litter collections and composting have been carried out as maintenance activities in Satoyama, Japan. The purpose of this study is to clarify the changing of chemical and biological characteristics differences in composting year of forest leaf litter in Satoyama and the effects on plant growth. Significant differences in water content of weight, percentage by nitrogen, C/N ratio, the degree of huminification (Absorbance at 600nm=A_<600>), water-soluble carbon, microbial biomass carbon, the degree of microbial activity (Absorbance at 490nm=A_<490>) of forest litter collections were compared with composting of one year were observed. The composting one year was not different from the composting in the following year. This study also indicated that plant growth was because of chemical fertilizer and composting the one and following year. These results showed that composting the one and following year was an effective contribution toward plant growth. In addition, it is considered that the degree of huminifation (A_<600>) and microbial activity (A_<490>) represented compost maturity of forest leaf litter and non-inhibition of plant injures.

Japanese, Scientific journal, Long-term changes in the water quality of soil water and streamwater were monitored before and after cutting at the lower slope position in a small forested watershed composed of artificial stands of old aged Japanese cedar and cypress in the northern Kanto region in Japan. The NO_3^- concentration in soil water directly reflected the N dynamics, i.e., the reduced nutrient uptake and accelerated nitrogen mineralization in the surface soil layer immediately after the cutting, and the increased nutrient uptake induced by regenerated trees several years after the practice. In contrast, the NO_3^- concentration in streamwater maintained higher level than before cutting in the sixth year after the practice. The NO_3^- concentrations in high and low discharge, which is dominated by direct flow and base flow, respectively, were calculated from the relationships between discharge rates and the NO_3^- concentration in streamwater. The results suggested that the NO_3^- distribution in soil affects the NO_3^- concentration in streamwater. Changes in the NO_3^- concentration in the subsoil were calculated using the HYDRUS-1D model, and these changes were consistent with previously measured seasonal and long-term changes in the NO_3^- concentration in streamwater. This finding implies that NO_3^- adsorption characteristics of the volcanic ash subsoil affects NO_3^- leaching into streamwater. In order to clarify the effects of the aging of artificial forests, the method of cutting, and environmental changes on N dynamics in soil and streamwater, it is necessary to consider the NO_3^- adsorption characteristics of volcanic ash soil.

Japanese, Volcanic ash soils contain appreciable quantities of anion adsorption capacity (AEC) due to the variable charge, and they adsorb anions by non-specific adsorption. To study the effect of this characteristic on the NO_3^- dynamics in forest soil, the NO_3^- adsorption-desorption process by the A-horizon and the B-horizon soils that are under the influence of volcanic ash were determined by the batch and the column methods. The batch experiment indicated that the adsorbed NO_3^- by the B-horizon soils increased with the additive KNO_3 concentration. This result revealed the characteristics of the anion adsorption due to the variable charge soils. The A-horizon soils adsorbed less amount of NO_3^- than B-horizon soils. The NO_3^- adsorption amounts were negatively correlated with the total C concentration in soils, suggesting the amount of positive charge in the soil was controlled by the organic matter. Meanwhile, the NO_3^- adsorption amounts were negatively correlated with pH in the A-horizon soils. Therefore, the A-horizon soils have variable charge due to the presence of humic substances, which was different from the B-horizon in composition of the positive charge. From the column experiment, the NO_3^- concentrations in soil water of the field before and after cutting, and the thickness of the B-horizon soil, the increment of NO_3^- adsorption amounts in the subsoil after cutting was calculated to be approximately 60 kgN ha^<-1>. This value indicated that the subsoil temporarily retained large amounts of N decomposed and released from forest floor, which inhibited the rapid increase in the NO_3^- concentration of stream water. When the soil columns filled with adsorbed NO_3^- were combined with deionized water, the entire additive NO_3^- was finally leached out from the columns. Therefore, it is expected that, while the increase in NO_3^- leaching from the cutting watershed would be reduced, the period of the increase would be long. From the column experiment and field observation, SO_4^<2-> leaching is also expected to increase followed by NO_3^- leaching, in the future.

Japanese, Scientific journal, The effects of forest cutting on nutrient dynamics, soil water content and chemistry, and stream water discharge rates and chemistry were examined for three years after the partial (lower slope ; 20% of total area) forest cutting of a watershed composed of artificial stands of old (99 years) Japanese cedar and cypress in Gunma prefecture, Japan. After the forest cutting, the soil water content in the surface soil layer (010 cm) decreased, although it increased in a deeper layer (3060 cm). The annual stream water discharge increased by about 100 mm after forest cutting. Compared to the period before cutting, the concentrations of NO3-, Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+ in surface soil water (5 cm) also increased during the summers of the first two years by about 37 times. However, three years after forest cutting, the concentrations decreased to the same levels as those in the period before cutting. Similarly, the stream water concentrations of NO3-, Ca2+, and Mg2+ increased 1.5 times. Seasonal changes in the concentrations of all analyzed ions in stream water increased in comparison with those before cutting. After forest cutting, the amount of NO3--N in the 3060 cm layer increased by four times the amount before cutting. Furthermore, this large amount persisted during the three consecutive years after the forest cutting. The NO3--N export to stream water increased up to 4.05.0 kg ha-1 yr-1 after cutting. However, the increase in the amount of NO3--N leaching to stream was smaller than that in soil water; this indicates the great potential of soil as a medium for NO3--N export. A higher amount of NO3--N in deeper soil (>30 cm) suggests retention and/or consumption of this ion in the soil even after the forest cutting.
  • The dynamics of dissolved organic nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon in a small watershed of established Japanese cedar and cypress plantation

Japanese Journal of Forest Environment, 44, 1, 11, 20, The Japanese Society of Forest Environment, 2002, [Peer-reviewed], [Domestic magazines]
Japanese, Scientific journal, To clarify the dynamics of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with vertical movements of rainfall in a small watershed of established Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) and Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. and Zucc.) plantation, DON, dissolved inorganic N (DIN), DOC in precipitation, throughfall, stemflow. A_0-percolation, soil water, spring water and stream water were investigated. DON and DOC in order of high concentrations were in A_0-percolation>throughfall>precipitation, and was rapidly in low concentration in soil water. The concentration of DOC decreased more along spring water and stream water. Annual fluxes of DON were 5.5kgha^<-1> in throughfall, 11.1kgha^<-1> in A_0-percolation, and only a little (under 0.9kgha^<-1>) in stream water. Annual fluxes of DOC were 139, 185, and 6.4kgha^<-1>, respectively. From throughfall to A_0-percolation, the percentage of DON to total dissolved nitrogen (TDN=DON+DIN) and the amount of NH_4-N decreased, and the amount of NO_3-N increased. The amount of DOC flux increase in throughfall minus A_0-percolation was smaller than that in precipitation minus throughfall. These results suggested that both the productivity of DON and DOC, and the activity of microbes for decomposition and nitrification in A_0-layer were high. The annual output of TDN from watershed was 13.8kgha^<-1>, and the percentage of DON/TDN was lower than 7%. The annual output of DOC was 6.4kgha^<-1>, which was smaller than those from the watersheds in Europe and North America. These results suggested that DON and DOC do not play an important role in N and C discharge from stream water in the established cedar and cypress plantation forests in Japan.

, English

, THE JAPANESE FORESTRY SOCIETY, Japanese
