    ABSTRACTNanotechnology is an area of research that is highly intriguing because of the novel properties often observed for materials whose sizes are reduced to the nanoscale. However, one of the biggest challenges is understanding the underlying principles that dictate the particles resulting properties. The atomic level structure for nanoparticles is suspected to vary from that for the corresponding bulk materials, however, direct observation of this phenomenon has proven difficult. Until recently only indirect information on the atomic level structure of such materials could be obtained with techniques such as XRD, HR-TEM, XPS, etc… However, recent advances in Transmission Electron Microscopy techniques now allow true atomic scale resolution, leading to definitive confirmation of the atomic structure. Namely, Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy coupled with a High-angle Annular Dark Field detector (STEM-HAADF) has been demonstrated to be capable of achieving a nominal resolution of 0.8 nm (the JEOL JEM-ARM200F instrument). The ability is highly exciting because it will lead to an enhanced understanding of the relationship between atomic structure of nanoparticles and the resulting novel properties. In our own study, we focus on the analysis of the atomic level structure for nanoparticles composed of bismuth, antimony and tellurium for thermoelectric materials. This area has recently received much interest because of the realization that nanotechnology can be employed to greatly enhance the efficiency (dimensionless figure of merit ZT) of this class of materials. One of the most intriguing parameters leading to the enhanced TE activity is the relationship between composition and structure that exists within individual nanoparticles. We report our results on a study of the atomic level structure for both nanowires and nanodiscs composed of bismuth, antimony and tellurium. It was found that the nanoparticles have a complex structure that cannot be elucidated by conventional techniques such as XRD or HR-TEM. In addition, by employing Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), a greater understanding of the composition-structure dependence was gained.     ABSTRACTWith the event of nanotechnology, the field of thermoelectric (TE) materials has been re-invigorated with many recent advances towards materials with high thermoelectric efficiency (dimensionless figure of merit, ZT). The realization of such materials opens up new avenues to the creation of devices that can be used in freon-less refrigeration, micro-electronic cooling, or for harnessing lost heat energy from sources such as car engines. In our own research work, we have successfully devised a synthetic technique towards nanoparticles composed of bismuth, antimony, and tellurium that has proven highly versatile in tuning both the composition and shape/structure of the resulting nanoparticles. The ability to control the nanoparticle composition and shape/structure are highly important as these are critical parameters that dictate the resulting devices TE activity. In a modified polyol synthetic technique, it was found that many complex composition, shape, and structure combinations could be obtained for the nanoparticles including Bi-Sb nanodiscs with controllable size, a heterostructure composed of Sb2Te3 nanodiscs deposited on Te nanowires, or small particles deposited on a (Bi0.5Sb0.5)2Te3 wire, just to name a few. By simply changing the capping ligands used in the synthesis, the nanoparticles resulting composition, morphology and structure could be changed, leading to a straightforward route towards TE nanoparticles with interesting properties.     Interaction of intense laser pulses with condensed matter, especially, nanoparticle stable aqueous dispersions, is expected to produce a variety of nonlinear optical effects. Among them, there have been independent experimental studies on high-energy pulsed X-ray (keV) generation through high-temperature plasmas for wavelength conversion and on low-energy terahertz wave (meV) generation based on higher-order nonlinear optical effects. In this study, femtosecond pulsed lasers have been irradiated to various nanoparticle aqueous dispersions and the energy generated from them have been detected. As a result, X-rays were efficiently extracted from Au nanoparticle aqueous dispersions, and THz-wave emission was also obtained from the Cu2O/Cu thin-layer interface. THz emission was also obtained from ZnTe nanoparticle aqueous dispersions, indicating that the interaction of intense laser pulses with condensed systems such as nanoparticles can produce an ultra-broadband light.

  • Preparation of rapid conductive thin film layer by nano-copper blow-out by slightly oxidized copper particles and low temperature sintering

    In this study, we synthesized slightly oxidized (CuxO, x>8) copper nanoparticles, copper nanoparticles with slightly oxidized phase on the surface layer and their mixtures as low temperature sintering materials. We succeeded in establishing an industrial synthesis method to obtain more than several tens of grams/batch. The obtained fine particles were dispersed in dipropylene glycol using a bead mill or a film swirling milling method. By determining the optimized milling conditions, we were able to synthesize a stable paste. At present, it was found that the copper particulate content could be as high as 80 wt% or more. When this paste was applied to a substrate and sintered at less than 200 degree C, we succeeded in forming a conductive film with a low resistivity within a few times that of the bulk. They also showed that the film formation mechanism is due to "nano-copper blowout," which is an enhanced diffusion of atoms.

  • Preparation of Stable and Efficient Fluorescent Alloy Nanoparticles by Matrix Sputtering

    In this study, nanoparticle synthesis, especially alloy nanoparticles, was carried out by matrix sputtering method using a multidimensional magnetron sputtering system. The obtained particles were stable and well dispersed. Direct sputtering onto TEM grids was also performed. The obtained microstructures were investigated in detail using XRD and aberration-corrected (atom-resolved) STEM, and the optical properties were investigated.
    Crystal structure analysis by XRD and atomic arrangement analysis by STEM revealed that each of the obtained nanoparticles is an alloy and has a solid solution structure. This was a characteristic of the matrix sputtering method. The optical properties were also investigated and showed luminescence.

  • Fine Structure of Bimetallic Solid Solution Nanoparticles Dispersed in Liquid by Double-Head Matrix Sputtering

    The research aims at the synthesis of bi-metallic solid solution nanoparticles by sputtering onto low-volatile liquid or directly on solid substrate and study of their fine structures. We obtained solid-solution alloy nanoparticles of controllable composition and sizes for various metal pairs such as solid-solution (Au/Ag), intermetallics (Au/Cu, Pt/Cu, Pd/Cu) or immiscible (Pt/Au) in the bulk. The solid-solution structure was confirmed with the atom resolution images coupled elemental distribution in combination with XPS, XRD, and UV-Vis results. The size-composition correlation was observed for alloy nanoparticles such as Pt/Au. Particle growth was evident on the gas-liquid interface, in the bulk liquid, and during storage.
