    Abstract

    Eelgrass ecosystems provide essential habitats for species, such as the Hokkai shrimp (Pandalus latirostris), supporting biodiversity and sustainable fisheries. Understanding shrimp behavior in these environments is vital for conservation efforts, yet accurately tracking shrimp movement in controlled tank settings is challenging because of surface reflections and parallax distortions. This study introduces a novel, noninvasive You Only Look Once (YOLO) tracking system that uniquely addresses these issues by integrating proximity-based filtering to remove reflection artifacts and horizontal barrel transformations to correct parallax distortions. Through controlled tank experiments, the system accurately quantified shrimp movements and captured metrics such as distance, velocity, and angle to assess behavioral responses to acoustic telemetry pingers. The results showed a high detection accuracy, with success rates of 95.65% and 100% from the front and side views, respectively, ensuring reliable data on shrimp movement and pinger impact. These findings lay the groundwork for field applications, advancing methods for ecosystem service quantification, and supporting sustainable fishery management and biodiversity conservation in eelgrass ecosystems.

    Eelgrass beds provide a habitat for many high-value fishery resources, and provisioning services, one of the ecosystem services, need to be quantified. However, few examples have been evaluated spatially. We determined the distribution of eelgrass beds in Lake Notoro, a marine lagoon in Hokkaido, Japan, and quantified the provisioning services by the eelgrass beds in relation to Pandalus latirostris, a fishery resource. Acoustic measurement surveys of the eelgrass beds and catch surveys of the shrimp were conducted in July and August 2015. The relationship between catch per unit effort (CPUE) of shrimp and the distribution of eelgrass beds was shown. The estimated distribution area of eelgrass beds was 7.07 km2. Shrimp was frequently caught at water depths of 3–5 m, approximately 200 m from the edge of the eelgrass beds. The expected catch of shrimp in the fishing area of Lake Notoro in 2015 was 25.37 tons and US$ 463.6 thousand. Eelgrass beds were found to affect the fisheries production not only on the inside but also at the edge and outside. The entire coastal space should be evaluated, while considering the effect of the distribution of eelgrass beds, to quantify the provisioning services.

    English, Scientific journal, Although chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) is an important fishery resource in Japan, acoustic methods cannot be applied to biomass estimation because the target strength (TS) is unknown. This study clarified the TS for each fork length (FL: 5.5–33.5 cm) of young chum salmon inhabiting the Japanese coastal area to the Bering Sea by measuring free-swimming fish. The size dependences of the TS values were TSmean = 20 log10 FL – 68.0, for both 38 and 120 kHz. This facilitated the estimation of biomass of young salmon using acoustic methods.

    English, Scientific journal, The Kuroshio Current can take two paths; usually it follows the regular pattern but occasionally it follows a pattern known as the large meander. In this study, we investigated the abundance of fish that migrate to coastal waters and the spatial distribution of fish schools under both Kuroshio patterns in Suzu district, Kochi prefecture, where the set net is the main fishery industry. We clarified the seasonal variation in the density and distribution of fish schools using a quantitative echo sounder. The effects of the Kuroshio large meander (LM) depended on the season. There was no effect of current pattern in summer or autumn, but in winter and spring the LM altered the marine environment and fish distributions. Cold water masses were formed in the survey area during winter and spring during the LM, and the water temperature dropped significantly compared with during the Kuroshio non-large meander (NLM). This altered the fish species and the distribution of fish schools in the survey area. The catches of Japanese horse mackerels (Trachurus japonicus) and Yellowtails (Seriola quinqueradiata) were much higher during the LM compared with those during the NLM. Unlike these two species, the small-sized pelagic fishes in spring has decreased significantly during the LM.
