• Examining the application of the concept of historical trauma to Ainu studies

  Japanese, Scientific journal, This paper reviews the concept of historical trauma, which has provided important insights in indigenous studies, and examines its application to Ainu studies. The present-day cultural situation of the Ainu people has changed dramatically from that previously in the modern age, and the cultural divide that has caused prejudice and discrimination against them is considered to have narrowed. Even so, Ainu continue to feel a sense of alienation due to their ethnic differences and fear outing themselves (i.e., exposing their ethnicity), making it difficult for them to increase their sense of self-esteem as Ainu. The introduction of the concepts of historical trauma and stigma makes it possible to spell out these situations.This paper then discusses how visualizing and healing trauma is a challenge in Ainu studies and Ainu policy. Heretofore, the Ainu policy of the government has focused entirely on cultural promotion, paying no attention or giving short shrift to their grief and trauma and to their need for healing. The loss of culture and trauma are closely related, but do not always overlap. That is, cultural revival does not solve the problem of discrimination. In future Ainu policy, I propose that, separately from cultural promotion, the government eliminate trauma by referring to programs designed to prevent other discrimination and harassment.

• Several Notes on the Female Fire Deity and her husband

  Japanese, Research institution, Recently, the author has researched into kamuy(deity) and inaw (offering to the deities). Until now, apekamuy(firedeity) has been regarded as the most important female deity, and her husband is cisekorkamuy(guardian of the house). He resides at the sacred corner of the house. However, according to ethnographic research on east hokkaido Ainu, the fire deity is a couple namely apeuciekasi(fire-male-deity) and apeucihuci(fire-female-deity), and they reside in the hearth. This important difference has been overlooked by many previous reseachers. The author's aim in this paper is to arrange and verify how the firedeity and guardian of the house appear in ethnography on whole district of hokkaido and sakhalin and ethnological materials which collected by many previous researchers. As the result of author's investigation, the style of guardian differ with district and sometimes the guardian can't be found in several districts. The author saw most interest date in the kachidistrict. In the Tokachi, the fire deity is a couple, and the female deity resides in the hearth, but the male deity resides at the sacred corner and he has been regarded as same deity to cisekamuy(deity of the house).

  This paper will introduce Hokkaido University’s initiatives to challenge discrimination and racial harassment against the Ainu people on campus. The recently established Office of Ainu Relations and Initiatives believes the cornerstones of building new partnerships between Ainu and ethnic Japanese/ non-Ainu university members are fostering respect for the human rights, history, culture, and language of the Ainu people, and building a supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff of Ainu descent. The office has developed initiatives that include student curriculum, staff/faculty sensitivity training, and the dissemination of information in print and digitally. Our aim is to raise awareness of the prejudices against and the stereotypes about Ainu people, as well as provide the tools for creating a safe space for students, faculty, and staff of Ainu descent. We are constantly monitoring our efforts in order to advance reconciliation and mutual understanding on campus., Center for Ainu & Indigenous Studies. • Theoretical re-articulation of anthropology and critical social movements for Indigenous Studies emergent in Japan

  本研究は、二つの相互に関連する目的をもつ。第一に、日本ではいまだ黎明期にある先住民族研究が、既存の学問領域（人類学、文化人類学、政治学、考古学、歴史学）、ならびに批判的社会運動との対話を通し、多様性を重んじる社会を形成するにあたり重要な役割を果たすという主張に理論的根拠を付与することである。（ここでは先住民族研究を先住民族による自らのための知と便宜的に捉えておく。）第二に、海外（とくに、アメリカ合衆国、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなど）では高等研究機関内に先住民族研究の拠点が存在し、既存の学問、ならびに批判的社会運動との連携も進行中であるが、この事実を念頭におき、それらの諸機関との間に知的交流の回路を形成し、その結果、日本における先住民族研究の存在意義を理論的に補強することである。
  一部の例外はあるものの、令和２(2020)年度はコロナ禍の影響を受け、上記、第二の目的である海外調査はほぼ不可能であったため、第一の目的の具体的根拠となる活動をおこなった。とくに、琉球人遺骨返還を求める批判的社会運動と学術との対話を促進した。対話の前提となる（遺骨返還に関する）共通認識を獲得するために、現地視察、聞き取りもおこなった。さらに、遺骨返還をテーマにした「対話」シンポジウムを二度開催した。さらに、アイヌ民族による批判的社会運動について、聞き取り調査をおこなった。また、理論形成を進めるため、科研代表者と分担者との間で、研究打ち合わせ会を全5回おこなった。令和２(2020)年度の活動から、当初は予想していなかった社会運動内部におけるジェンダーによる無意識の階層化についても、今後、検討を要するという提起がなされた。理論的課題として、アイヌ民族や琉球民族の存在を否定する側の論理と批判的社会運動との矛盾した関係について考察を深める必要があるという認識にも至った。

• A Basic Study on the Influence of Ancient Japanese Culture in Substrate and Formation Process of Ainu Culture

  I conducted a comparative study on the relationship between ancient Japan (especially the Tohoku district) culture, the Hokkaido culture of the same era and the Ainu culture from the aspect of religion and ritual.In particular, we examined the distribution, form and function of metal products and wood products related to religion and ritual.
  The religious and ritual tools of the Ainu culture could point out the possibility that there is origin in the Satsumon era.
  Also, In ancient Hokkaido and its adjacent areas, it was possible to point out the tendency that religious and ritual traces are found in important places in trade and exchange.

  The project pursued an indigenous people policy which fits in with the unique realities of the Ainu and Japan. It became clear that it's appropriate to revive ethnic culture of Ainu by placing the Ainu’s right to choose one’s ethnic identity on the article 13 of the Japanese Constitution and by imposing the obligation to realize the right on the government. Cultural revival is necessary to advance national understanding of the Ainu people and of a comprehensive policy to improve the social status of the Ainu. The cultural rehabilitation also is effective to increase young Ainu who tackle various issues for the improvement of their social status.

• A study of contemporary importance of old pictures in university museum

  We digitalize and made a database of 25,000 old pictures taken by professors worked for university museum. In this project,(1) we restored the specimen information by using the old pictures,(2) we were sure that the pictures are base information for Ainu Culture research,(3) we restored the record of local cultural property. The most valuable result of this project is catalogue of the pictures. This catalogue was sent to many libraries, research institutions, it will be utilized for various purposes
