In an 11-year-old provenance test site, many trees of Picea glehnii showed phenomena of unknown cause, like needle yellowing and dieback. To elucidate differences in damage among the families, we investigated the degree of damage and heights of the planted trees. We found that individuals with severe damage tended to be lower in height. The degree of damage varied among the familied and a relationship between average height and degree of damage was not found in several families. The relationship between provenances and damage is not clear, bacause the degree of damage differs greatly among the families within each provenance. Although it is necessary to confirm the cause of the damage, some families are probably more susceptible to damage than others., Japanese Forestry Society, Japanese - Taxonomy and ecology of Armillaria species in Hokkaido

Invasion of Shiitake bed logs by Armillaria spp. was investigated in Uryu Experimental Forest of Hokkaido University. About 50% of the bed logs were invaded by rhizomorphs of Armillaria spp. The percentages of invasion in blocks are from 4.1 to 93.0, but showed the difference according to the blocks of the bed logs. It is considered that the bed logs were directly invaded by rhizomorphs of Armillaria spp. living in soil., Japanese Society of Mushroom Science and Biotechnology, Japanese - Cultural characteristics of Biological Species of Armillaria from Hokkaido, Japan

Basidiomes of an Armillaria (HUA93110) were collected in the fall of 1993 from the Tomakomai Experimental Forest of Hokkaido University, Tomakomai, Hokkaido. The basidiomes occurred on the decaying roots of a fallen Acer mono MAXIM. in a broad-leaved forest. The fungus was identified as Armillaria mella (V_<AHL>: F_R.) KUMMER s. s. based on microscopical characteristics of the basidiome and the results of mating tests with haploid testers of it from North America. Its sexual behavior (not showing any discernible mating reaction in the self-cross) and cultural characteristics of monosporous isolates (colonies at first fluffy in appearance but becoming crustose) of the Japanese form apparently are different from those of the European and North American forms, but are very similar to those of the African form., Japanese Forestry Society, English - Development of Flammulina velutipes (Curt.: F_R.)
