Numerical experiments in an idealized, continuously stratified ocean were carried out to investigate the distribution of the mass/thickness flux by mesoscale eddies along isopycnals. The model domain consisted of a rectangular basin, and a narrow eastward jet was imposed on the western boundary. The flux of the thickness between isopycnals induced by eddies is almost parallel to the jet. The distribution of the eddy-induced thickness flux is qualitatively consistent with an 1.5-layer, fluctuating axis model (FAM) by Masuda (2007), in which the whole flow pattern in the vertical cross section of the jet is assumed to shift with the fluctuating jet axis without changing the shape. The assumption used in the FAM is also validated numerically. In the western part of the model domain, the change of the cross sectional structure of the jet by eddies is mostly consistent with that assumed in the FAM. This feature of eddies indicates that the FAM can correctly predict the qualitative features of the eddy-induced thickness flux in this region. オホーツク海南西部において,1997年2月砕氷船「そうや」により,海洋と海氷の観測を行った。この観測によって,ほぼ結氷温度にある海洋混合層が300mの深さにまで達しているのが見つかった。これは,今まで考えられていたよりもずっと深い。この深い海洋混合層はこの海域で形成されたのではなく,サハリン東岸沖で形成され,それが東サハリン海流によって陸棚斜面に沿って移流されたものであると考えられる。また,これらと一緒に平均0.6mの厚い一年氷も運ばれていた。この鉛直に一様な冬季水は,周りの水と混合し,この海域の表層水をより高塩化し東サハリン海流水の性質を失わせる。一方,100~300m深の水は逆に,オホーツク海中層に特徴的な低塩,低温,高酸素の海水に変質される。海洋構造と熱収支解析から,氷縁域によく見られる新生氷帯は,まず厚い海氷が移流され,それが融解することによって潜熱を奪って表面水が冷却される,という事前の条件があった上で作られることが示唆された。, Japanese - アルゴス海洋漂流ブイによるオホーツク海と親潮域の循環と潮流特性

平成30年度は、白鳳丸、開洋丸、海鷹丸、しらせ、の4船が南大洋インド洋海域(東南極海域)を同時に広範囲で観測することとなった。白鳳丸では、ケープダンレー底層水の生成域と拡がっていく海域において、初めてフロンとSF6の同時計測を行った。これにより、底層水の平均年齢や起源となる水の混合比が同定でき、底層水の循環時間スケールや混合過程の定量化に大きく寄与する。さらに、海水年齢と溶存酸素量との関係から酸素消費速度が算出され、栄養塩循環の定量的理解が可能となる。白鳳丸航海では、高密度水が潜り込んで底層水を形成する峡谷に3系の係留系を設置した。回収されれば、底層水の流量や熱塩フラックスを見積もることが可能となる。酸素・pHセンサーや時系列採水器も付いており、底層水形成に関わる物質輸送過程とその季節変動の解明にもつながる。また、しらせにより、高密度水ができるポリニヤ(陸棚)域にも時系列採水器付の係留系を設置した。峡谷の係留系には、セジメントトラップもついており、これによる物質循環や海底への堆積過程に関わる情報と、同航海により係留点近傍の底層水の通り道で取得されたピストンコアデータから、過去の底層水の遍歴を解明することが可能となる。最新の研究から東南極最大の氷床量減少海域であることが示されたトッテン氷河域を新たに日本の集中観測海域と定め、その予備的観測を開始した。本年度は開洋丸によって、同海域の沖合で70点以上のCTD採水・XCTD観測が行われた。海鷹丸では、ビンセネス湾沖底層水の定量評価と南大洋子午面循環の構造を捉えるために、生態系班とも共同して、4系の係留系を設置した。また平成29年度に設置した係留系を回収し、その解析から子午面循環の一部と考えられる流れの構造を捉えることができた。

The eastward extension of western boundary currents (eastward jet) such as the Kuroshio Extension and Gulf Stream is accompanied by the recirculation and multiple zonal jets, which are driven by mesoscale eddies generated by instability of the eastward jet. We showed that the rectification of Rossby waves contributes to the driving of the recirculation. The generating mechanism of Rossby waves was also investigated. We also demonstrated that multiple zonal jets correspond to multiple fronts in the Kuroshio Extension region. The multiple zonal jets shift southward in the speed comparable to the Sverdrup interior flow of the wind-driven circulation on the interannual time scale.

A riddle in physical oceanography has been why and how organized currents are generated spontaneously from random eddies in the ocean. In this study, by numerical experiment and dynamic investigation, we have attained several remarkable achievements for (1) Rhines effects, (2) recirculation in the Kuroshio Extension, (3) Neptune effects, (4) baroclinic-instability induced zonal current on a beta plane, (5) mean current with shear of zero absolute vorticity. As for common mechanisms underlying those phenomena, we have revealed important roles of such concepts as (1) nonlinear interaction of three wavenumber components, (2) dispersion relation of Rossby waves, (3) planetary and topographic beta effects, (4) redistribution of momentum and vorticity by Rossby waves, and (5) marginal stability. These results suggest future subjects to be studied and prospective approaches to be explored.

The dynamics of the interaction between the planetary waves, which are radiated from an ocean jet such as the Kuroshio Extension, the large-scale mean flow, and bottom topography is examined. It is shown that the planetary waves broadens the jet and matches it with weak flows in the ocean interior. The planetary waves also induce the equatorward potential-vorticity flux in the abyss, driving deep recirculations. After impinging over a bottom slope of seamounts, trenches, etc, the planetary waves induce the mean flow that is trapped near both the bottom and surface.

Numerical experiments using a 2-layer quasi-geostrophic mode and a primitive equation model were carried out to study the dynamics of oceanic western boundary current separation and formation of the eastward extension jet. There are two types of stable solutions; one of them is the solution in which the eastward jet is formed along the subtropical/subpolar gyre boundary and the other is the prematurely separated jet solution in which the western boundary current separation occurs far upstream of the gyre boundary. It was found that the latitude of the prematurely separated jet was almost independent of model parameters including nonlinearity. Dependence of the jet latitude on the meridional distribution of the wind forcing was investigated and the mechanism determining the jet latitude was discussed.

黒潮やメキシコ湾流の様な強い海流(以下、ジェット)の付近には再循環とよばれる強い循環が存在する。本研究では、再循環の出来るしくみを知るために、渦、ロスビー波および再循環の相互作用を数値実験によって調べた。ジェットの流れは不規則に変動するにも関わらず、そこから発生するロスビー波は常に同じ速さで伝わるという明瞭な規則がある。これはロスビー波の発生原因を知る鍵となる。さらに、ロスビー波が発生し、伝わることは再循環の維持形成に重要であることが示唆される。

オホーツク海は北太平洋中層水に相当する密度の水が大気と接する場所として重要な海域である。最近の観測によるとオホーツク海の西岸域には季節変動の大きな強い南下流が存在することが示されているが、その流れを維持する力学は十分解明されていない。中でも観測が行われた海域は水深が1000から1500m程度であり、海底地形が流れに影響を与えることが予測される。特に顕著な地形的特徴としてDeruign Basinとよばれる海底の窪みが存在する。
そこで、本研究では2層プリミティブ方程式系モデルにより海底に窪みがある場合の風成循環とその季節変化を調べた。モデルには渦による密度の水平拡散の効果を単純化して取り入れた。はじめに、理想化された海底地形を与え数値実験を行った。それによると海底の窪みにともなってgeostrophic island (geostrophic contourの閉じた領域)が存在するとき、西岸付近の流れの流量はスベルドラップの平衡式から計算される流量よりも絶対値が大きくなる。さらにその流量の季節変化の位相は風応力の位相よりも約90度遅れる。これらの特徴は解析解とも一致する。さらに解析解の性質から、これらの特徴は渦による密度の水平拡散によってgeostrophic islandの中に励起される流れによるものとして解釈できることが示された。次に、オホーツク海の現実の海底地形を与えた数値実験を行った。実験で得られた北緯53度を横切る流量も理想化した海底地形の場合のそれと同じ特徴を示し、Deruigin Basinに伴う海底の窪みの影響が強く示唆される。この特徴は観測で得られたものと一致する。

オホーツク海冬季の現場での海氷・海洋データは今までほとんど得られていなかった。1996,1997,1998年2月の3年にわたって海上保安庁の砕氷船「そうや」により、オホーツク海南西部において、海氷の諸量及び海洋構造の観測を行った。海氷の厚さは1996,1998年は平均20〜30cm程度であったが、1997年は60cmあり、年によって大きく異なることがわかった。従って、衛星データから得られる密接度のデータから海氷の量的な評価を行うことは大きな問題がある。また、この氷厚の違いが何によるのかは今後の興味深い課題である。海氷アルベド(日射に対する反射率)は1996,1997年の観測から、オホーツク海では氷状によらずほぼ0.6〜0.65程度であることがわかった。
1997年2月の海氷域での海氷観測データから以下のことが明らかになった。オホーツク海では冬季、結氷温度で一様な海洋混合層が300m以上に及ぶ場合がある。これは、海氷生成による鉛直対流だけでなく、南風による岸でのエクマン収束のようなmechanicalな効果によることも示唆される。このような厚い混合層を持つ水塊は東カラフト海流として海底斜面に沿ってカラフト沿岸沿いを南下し、それに伴って厚い海氷も南へ運ばれる。移流された海氷の一部は風で周辺の暖水域へ運ばれ、初めはそこで融解され表層を低塩化するが潜熱を奪うことによって、やがてそこを結氷温度まで下げ、新生氷生成域に転じさせることになる。
現在、これらの海氷・海洋データから海氷の生成・移動・融解が熱塩収支過程に及ぼす役割を解析中である。一方、1998年2月の「そうや」の観測では、海氷上とその風下でのゾンデ観測を行い、海氷による大気の変質という観点での解析も現在行っている。
