  • Hierarchical structures emerge from the cultural transmission: an iterated learning experiment using a non-linguistic task

Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, 6, 1221329, 22 Dec. 2023, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author, Corresponding author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, Human language is characterized by complex structural features, such as the hierarchical combination of words to form sentences. Although other animals use communication systems, empirical evidence of hierarchical structures is rare. Computational studies of language evolution have suggested that cultural transmission plays a key role in the emergence of structural features in human languages, including hierarchy. While the previous study demonstrated the emergence of hierarchical structures in non-linguistic systems, we argue that their laboratory study may have overestimated the role of cultural transmission because of a lack of appropriate controls and analyses. To directly test the effect of cultural transmission, we conducted an experiment with no cultural transmission as a control (individual condition) in addition to replicating the previous transmission experiment (transmission condition). Our study has added a quantitative analysis of the hierarchical depth. We found that sequences became more structured as the number of generations increased; however, those produced under the transmission condition were more structured than those under the individual condition. These findings suggest that cultural transmission plays an important role in the emergence of hierarchical structures, which cannot be explained by increased learnability alone. The emergence of complex structural properties in human culture, such as language, technology, and music, may have resulted from information transmission processes between different individuals. In conclusion, this study provides evidence of the crucial role of cultural transmission in the emergence of hierarchical structures in non-linguistic communication systems. Our results contribute to the ongoing debate on the origins of human language and the emergence of complex cultural artifacts. The results of this study have implications for the study of cultural evolution and the role of transmission in shaping the emergence of structural features across diverse domains.
  • Conditions under which faithful cultural transmission through teaching promotes cumulative cultural evolution

Scientific Reports, 13, 20986, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 28 Nov. 2023, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author, Corresponding author], [International Magazine]
    English, Scientific journal, Abstract

It has been argued that teaching promotes the accurate transmission of cultural traits and eventually leads to cumulative cultural evolution (CCE). However, previous studies have questioned this argument. In this study, we modified the action sequences model into a network exploring model with reinforcement learning to examine the conditions under which teaching promotes CCE. Our model incorporates a time trade-off between innovation and teaching. Simulations revealed that the positive influence of teaching on CCE depends on task difficulty. When the task was too difficult and advanced, such that it could not be accomplished through individual learning within a limited time, spending more time on teaching—even at the expense of time for innovation—contributed to CCE. On the contrary, the easier the task, the more time was spent on innovation than on teaching, which contributed to the improvement of performance. These findings suggest that teaching becomes more valuable as cultures become more complex. Therefore, humanity must have co-evolved a complex cumulative culture and teaching that supports cultural fidelity.

English, Scientific journal, Why do people assume that a generous person should also be honest? Why do we even use words like “moral” and “immoral”? We explore these questions with a new model of how people perceive moral character. We propose that people vary in the extent to which they perceive moral character as “localized” (varying along many contextually embedded dimensions) versus “generalized” (varying along a single dimension from morally bad to morally good). This variation might be partly the product of cultural evolutionary adaptations to different kinds of social networks. As networks grow larger, perceptions of generalized morality are increasingly valuable for predicting cooperation during partner selection, especially in novel contexts. Our studies show that social network size correlates with perceptions of generalized morality in United States and international samples (Study 1) and that East African hunter–gatherers with greater exposure outside their local region perceive morality as more generalized compared to those who have remained in their local region (Study 2). We support the adaptive value of generalized morality in large and unfamiliar social networks with an agent-based model (Study 3), and in experiments where we manipulate partner unfamiliarity (Study 4). Our final study shows that perceptions of morality have become more generalized over the last 200 years of English-language history, which suggests that it may be coevolving with rising social complexity and anonymity in the English-speaking world (Study 5). We discuss the implications of this theory for the cultural evolution of political systems, religion, and taxonomical theories of morality.

Japanese, Scientific journal, In the last decade, psychology faced a serious crisis, called the reproducibility problem. To solve the problem, several methodological and institutional changes have been proposed and implemented such as the promotion of replication studies and publication of negative results, the introduction of a preregistration system in academic journals, and the implementation of novel statistical methods for suppressing false-positive results. In this paper, based on a previously proposed formal model of population dynamics of scientific discovery, I first explain that these changes are insufficient for avoiding the reproducibility problem. Based on two examples in social psychology, I also discuss that what is necessary for fundamen- tal reformulation of psychology is rigorous modeling, which has already been widely applied in many sci- entific fields outside psychology.

Japanese, Scientific journal, How does a reciprocal communal sharing system come into existence in a sustainable form in human societies? The anthropological literature has provided two explanations for the origin of communal sharing under uncertainty: risk reduction by social sharing (Kaplan & Hill, 1985) and tolerated theft (Blurton Jones, 1984, 1987; Winterhalder, 1986, 1996). In this paper, we aim to develop a third explanation focusing on the emergence of a communal sharing norm. A communal sharing norm here refers to a social norm designating uncertain resources as common properties. A series of computer simulations based on an evolutionary game framework suggests that such a communal sharing norm is indeed evolvable. We argue that the evolutionary game analysis can be a powerful tool in cognitive science to derive empirical hypotheses concerning various cognitive and behavioral mechanisms.
  • The Effect of an Unfair Treatment in the Resolution of a Social Dilemma
    Takezawa, Masanori
Japanese Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 39, 1, 30, 40, The Japanese Group Dynamics Association, 1999, [Peer-reviewed], [Lead author, Corresponding author]
Japanese, Scientific journal, The social dilemma problem has been noticed to be involved in collective action. In this paper I explained a process through which the social dilemma problem involved in collective action is resolved when participants share the heightened sense of unfairness. The heightened sense of being unfairly treated motivates people to take actions aimed at restoring fairness. It also is expected to foster expectations that other people are also motivated to take such fairness-restoring actions. This is because unfair situation people want to redress through a collective action is most likely to be shared by potential participants of the collective action. The sense of being unfairly treated, thus, is expected to promote cooperation in a social dilemma. I tested the effect of unfair treatment in a social dilemma in two experiment, each using a unique type of dilemma. The social dilemma in the first experiment was created in such a manner that expectations that others would also cooperate was to be critical for the participants' decision. The results showed that the experience of unfair treatment affected the participants' motivation and expectations, and boosted the cooperation level. The dilemma used in the second experiment was of such a nature that expectations were not critical for the participants' decision. The results showed that experience of unfair treatment affected only the participants' motivation, but not expectations, and yet boosted the cooperation level.

The cultural group selection hypothesis argues that conflicts between groups in human history developed cooperative tendency in humans. We examined this hypothesis through various approaches and acquired the following findings: 1. We indicated that tendencies of social conformity and norm-dependence are related to a tendency of risk avoidance. Additionally we showed neural bases of the psychological traits. 2. We developed an experimental task which can examine inter-group social dilemma, and showed that ingroup-love and outgroup-hate in Japanese population are mediated by a trait of sociality. In addition, we expolred neural bases of this phenomenon. 3. We explored evolutional factors of inter-group cooperation through observation studies of groups of animal baboons by GPS. 4. We theoretically examined cooperation to others and aggression to others by using computer simulation.

Cultural group selection is a theoretical framework that explains the large-scale cooperation unique to human society by focusing on the human’s unique capacity of sophisticated social learning. Empirical researchers have not thoroughly examined the theory consisting of a group of formal theoretical models. In this study, we tested the validity of the logic of cultural group selection through a large-scale group experiment and analysis of large-scale cross-cultural data. As a result of the experiments and data analyses using Bayesian statistical models, we found that strategies that benefit the group diffuse across group boundaries in the same process as predicted by the theory.

Science is a highly organized system of knowledge and information which gradually develops through the processes of cumulative cultural evolution. In this study, we focused on the experimental tasks employed in the studies on scientific discovery and collaborative learning in cognitive science. These tasks mimic the real world problems scientists face in their work, and it is challenging for a single individual to find a correct answer. Using these tasks, we clarified micro-level processes how information and knowledge are transmitted across generations, are transformed within a generation and progressively change to sophisticated levels.

Research on social learning revealed that people utilize multiple strategies. This research adopts theframework of adaptive toolbox developed by Gigerenzer , T odd & the ABC research group (1999)on this problem. The basic idea is that depending on the environments, different strategy becomesmore adaptive than the others and people selectively use a strategy that is adaptive in the givensituation. In this research, we focused on two representative social learning strategies; majoritystrategy and the best member strategy . Through a series of theoretical and empirical studies, wefound that the best member often outperforms the majority . However , as is often the case, when it isdifficult to identify the true best member , the majority strategy performs relatively better than thebest member strategy . People seem to switch from the majority to the best member strategy onlywhen a reliaermation indicating who the real best member is obtained.
