English, Scientific journal, In recent years, increasing philosophical attention has been given to an approach that does not begin with self and other as separated individuals, but rather takes relationality as the starting point for thinking about self and other. However, this shift in thinking is not as straightforward as it might initially appear. Various pitfalls lie hidden in the attempt to conceptualize the self and other relationally. Without carefully identifying and relativizing these pitfalls, theories of relational selfhood may easily fall into another form of extremity, distinct from the substantialization of the individual. This article examines several characteristic modes of argument employed by philosophers who explore relational selfhood and alterity. Particular attention is given to the rhetorical use of the expression neither–nor as a strategy for rejecting both poles of a binary opposition and for dislocating fixed dichotomies. I then consider how such a dismantling of oppositional schemas can function as a procedure for exposing lived experiences obscured by those very schemas. Finally, I argue that the task is not to erase such oppositional structures entirely, but rather to stand within the very site of their generation – still utilizing them, while at the same time becoming free from them., 43102861;43102862;47537081;47537082
  • The concept of ‘maemuki’ and its philosophical implications: The dynamics of adversity-driven positivity

Cognitive Studies, 32, 3, 339, 351, Japanese Cognitive Science Society, Sep. 2025, [Peer-reviewed], [Invited], [Lead author, Corresponding author]
Japanese, Scientific journal, The term maemuki is a commonly used and straightforward expression in Japanese. However, our research reveals that it carries unexpectedly profound philosophical implications. This paper first presents the fundamental hypothesis that maemuki is closely related to adversity. Second, we empirically examine this hypothesis through a corpus-based analysis of Japanese texts. Third, we undertake a philosophical investigation of the relationship between adversity and maemuki across various contexts. To illustrate this relationship, we analyze the maemuki attitudes of athletes, adventurers, and terminal cancer patients as significant examples. Athletes and adventurers, by deliberately immersing themselves in adversity, attain a higher-order form of maemuki. Terminal cancer patients, despite their limited life expectancy, can still embody maemuki. These cases suggest that adversity and maemuki are not merely opposing forces that negate each other. Instead, adversity acts as a driving force for maemuki, while maemuki integrates adversity into one’s life through a dynamic process of mutual mediation. Furthermore, drawing on Han-Pile’s study of the medio-passive nature of hope and linguistic analyses of the middle voice, we characterize maemuki as a mental attitude that is neither purely active nor purely passive but possesses a middle-voice-like structure. Through this analysis, we contend that maemuki is a complex and multilayered concept of positivity—one that does not reject adversity but is mediated and conditioned by it, revealing a depth beyond simple optimism., 47537082

  • Reality of Affordances: A Category-Theoretic Approach
Hirota, Ryuzo; Saigo, Hayato; Taguchi, Shigeru
ALIFE 2024: Proceedings of the 2024 Artificial Life Conference, -, -, -, -, The International Society for Artificial Life, 22 Jul. 2024, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author], [International Magazine]
English, International conference proceedings, The concept of affordance, proposed by James J. Gibson as an opportunity for action offered by the environment to the organism, has been adopted in various fields, including psychology, neuroscience, and robotics. However, different interpretations exist as to whether it is a feature of a relation between the environment and the organism and therefore cannot exist independently of the organism, or a “resource” that exists in the environment independent of the organism’s presence and is waiting to be used, or both, or neither. In this paper, we defend the position that affordances are both relational and resources using a category-theoretic approach. This idea is formalized by the concept of “natural transformations” in category theory, which are structure-preserving transformations between “functors” – mathematical expressions representing “seeing from a particular perspective.” We propose that formalizing the realism of affordance in terms of natural transformations offers a more rigorous and lucid understanding of this concept. Furthermore, our formalization enables us to relate the reality of affordances to a broader context, especially the shift in the meaning of “reality” in modern physics. Our category-theoretic approach offers a potential solution to the problems and limitations associated with existing set theory-based frameworks for affordances, paving the way for a future theory that better accounts for the openended interplay between organisms and their environments., 43102862;43102861

  • Ur-Ich, as a Concept in Phenomenology
    Shigeru Taguchi
Encyclopedia of Phenomenology, 1, 9, Springer International Publishing, 21 Feb. 2024, [Peer-reviewed], [Invited], [Lead author, Last author, Corresponding author], [International Magazine]
English, In book, “Ur-Ich” is Husserl’s term for the problem dimension concerning the “I” that appears when we go deeper than transcendental phenomenology at the first stage. It is disclosed mainly in two contexts: the radicalized reduction to the primal streaming in the theory of temporalization and the radicalized epoché regarding the validity of intersubjectivity. It is an apparent misunderstanding to interpret it as a trans-individual metaphysical ego beyond empirical egos or as a solipsistic ego that creates other egos out of itself. Instead, it signifies a fundamental phenomenon of being I, without which the transcendental self-disclosure of the primal life and the experience of “being with others” would not be possible., 43102861;27958802

  • The monoid-now: a category theoretic approach to the structure of phenomenological time-consciousness
    Shigeru Taguchi; Hayato Saigo
Frontiers in Psychology, 14, 1237984, 1237984, Frontiers Media SA, 05 Sep. 2023, [Peer-reviewed], [Lead author, Corresponding author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, Human consciousness is characterized by constant transitions in time. On the other hand, what is consciously experienced always possesses the temporal feature of “now.” In consciousness, “now” constantly holds different contents, yet it remains “now” no matter how far it goes. This duality is thematized in Husserlian phenomenology as “the standing-streaming now.” Although this phrase appears contradictory in everyday language, it has a structure that can be clearly understood and formalized. In this paper, we show that this structure can be described as a monoid in category theory. Furthermore, monoids can be transformed into the coslice category, which corresponds to the way of perceiving present moments as juxtaposed in succession. The seemingly contradictory nature of the “now” as both flowing and standing can be precisely structured and comprehended through the monoid, while the perspective of the “now” as discrete points on a timeline can be effectively formalized using the coslice category. This framework helps us more precisely understand the differences between ordinary consciousness and meditative consciousness, specifically the experience of the “eternal now.” We illustrate how the meditative states of consciousness presented in the early Buddhist scriptures (Pali Canon) and Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō remarkably reflect a monoid structure., 43102862;43102861;27958802
  • Reformalizing the notion of autonomy as closure through category theory as an arrow-first mathematics
Hirota, Ryuzo; Saigo, Hayato; Taguchi, Shigeru
Artificial Life Conference Proceedings, 2023, MIT Press Direct, 24 Jul. 2023, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author], [International Magazine]
English, International conference proceedings, Life continuously changes its own components and states at each moment through interaction with the external world, while maintaining its own individuality in a cyclical manner. Such a property, known as “autonomy,” has been formulated using the mathematical concept of “closure.” We introduce a branch of mathematics called “category theory” as an “arrow-first” mathematics, which sees everything as an “arrow,” and use it to provide a more comprehensive and concise formalization of the notion of autonomy. More specifically, the concept of “monoid,” a category that has only one object, is used to formalize in a simpler and more fundamental way the structure that has been formalized as “operational closure.” By doing so, we show that category theory is a framework or “tool of thinking” that frees us from the habits of thinking to which we are prone and allows us to discuss things formally from a more dynamic perspective, and that it should also contribute to our understanding of living systems., 43102861;43102862;27958802

  • Superposition mechanism as a neural basis for understanding others.
Wataru Noguchi; Hiroyuki Iizuka; Masahito Yamamoto; Shigeru Taguchi
    Scientific Reports, 12, 1, 2859, 2859, 21 Feb. 2022, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, Social cognition has received much attention in fields such as neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy. Theory-theory (TT) and simulation theory (ST) provide the dominant theoretical frameworks for research on social cognition. However, neither theory addresses the matter of how the concepts of "self" and "other" are acquired through the development of human and nonhuman agents. Here, we show that the internal representations of "self" and "other" can be developed in an artificial agent only through the simple predictive learning achieved by deep neural networks with the superposition mechanism we herein propose. That is, social cognition can be achieved without a pre-given (or innate) framework of self and other; this is not assumed (or is at least unclear) in TT and ST. We demonstrate that the agent with the proposed model can acquire basic abilities of social cognition such as shared spatial representations of self and other, perspective-taking, and mirror-neuron-like activities of the agent's neural network. The result indicates that the superposition mechanism we propose is a necessary condition for the development of the concepts of "self" and "other" and, hence, for the development of social cognition in general., 27958802

  • Crosstalk between Existential Phenomenological Psychotherapy and Neurological Sciences in Mood and Anxiety Disorders
Lehel Balogh; Masaru Tanaka; Nóra Török; László Vécsei; Shigeru Taguchi
    Biomedicines, 9, 340, 27 Mar. 2021, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, Psychotherapy is a comprehensive biological treatment modifying complex underlying cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and regulatory responses in the brain, leading patients with mental illness to a new interpretation of the sense of self and others. Psychotherapy is an art of science integrated with psychology and/or philosophy. Neurological sciences study the neurological basis of cognition, memory, and behavior as well as the impact of neurological damage and disease on these functions, and their treatment. Both psychotherapy and neurological sciences deal with the brain; nevertheless, they continue to stay polarized. Existential phenomenological psychotherapy (EPP) has been in the forefront of meaning-centered counseling for almost a century. The phenomenological approach in psychotherapy originated in the works of Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Binswanger, Medard Boss, and Viktor Frankl, and it has been committed to accounting for the existential possibilities and limitations of one’s life. EPP provides philosophically rich interpretations and empowers counseling techniques to assist mentally suffering individuals by finding meaning and purpose to life. The approach has proven to be effective in treating mood and anxiety disorders. This narrative review article demonstrates the development of EPP, the therapeutic methodology, evidence-based accounts of its curative techniques, current understanding of mood and anxiety disorders in neurological sciences, and a possible converging path to translate and integrate meaning-centered psychotherapy and neuroscience, concluding that the EPP may potentially play a synergistic role with the currently prevailing medication-based approaches for the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders.

Metodo: International Studies in Phenomenology and Philosophy, 7, 2, 17, 44, Dec. 2019, [Peer-reviewed], [Invited], [Lead author, Last author, Corresponding author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, In this paper, I propose a possible reinterpretation of phenomenology using a newly defined concept of ‘mediation.’ First, I address the question: What are the ‘things themselves’ that are given as the result of the phenomenological epoché? I would answer that they are neither material objects nor merely subjective experiences, but rather specific occurrences of ‘mediations.’ Second, under the influence of the Japanese philosopher Hajime Tanabe, I will define ‘mediation’ as a non-separable occurrence of differentiating and connecting. Third, I shall claim that the concept of ‘phenomenon’ itself should be reinterpreted in terms of its character of mediation. Then, I will discuss central issues in phenomenology such as intentionality, time, and inter-subjectivity in order to test the applicability of the proposed concept of mediation. To conclude, I shall summarize the potential of the idea that phenomenology can be reinterpreted using the concept of mediation., 11784023
  • Extreme obviousness and the "zero-person" perspective: Why is the problem of the "primal I" fundamental for transcendental phenomenology?
    Shigeru Taguchi
Metodo: International Studies in Phenomenology and Philosophy, s1.3, 15, 37, Dec. 2019, [Peer-reviewed], [Invited], [Lead author, Corresponding author], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, Transcendental reflection does not simply withdraw from natural life and go somewhere else. On the contrary, it is a self-elucidation of natural life performed within this life itself. However, natural life has an inherent automatic system for concealing itself. Therefore, in order to make manifest the truly natural state of natural life, we need a deliberate method of outfoxing the natural attitude as it constantly tries to trick us. If so, the transcendental perspective is closely related to Husserl’s perplexing concept of “primal I”. It expresses a primitive perspective of our experience that cannot be identified with the first-person perspective. Phenomenology is not merely an investigation of experience from the first-person point of view, but a philosophical thinking from a “zero person” perspective that makes it possible for us to understand the relativity of our own first-person experience, and how it is related to other first-person experiences and the third-person perspective., 11784023
  • A transformed view of reality resulting from Bayesian theory: Comments on Asai's article
    TAGUCHI Shigeru
Japanese Psychological Review, 62, 1, 16, 24, Nov. 2019, [Peer-reviewed], [Invited], [Lead author, Corresponding author], [Domestic magazines]
Japanese, Scientific journal, Asai (2019) discusses a transformation of the view of reality resulting from the Bayesian theory of inference. The current paper offers philosophical interpretations concerning the significance, scope, and possible development of Asai’s discussion, which are especially based on a phenomenological point of view. Asai’s Bayesian view of reality is closely related to phenomenology. It implies a denial of determinism and naive realism. However, these traits of Asai’s view can signify a more moderate and scientific attitude. What an individual experiences as reality is the effect of certain filters that his or her experience has. Asai calls this effect “attention”; however, it is better described as “consciousness.” His interpretation of reality as mutual interference of waves is convincing and closely matches the quantum theoretical view of reality. Finally, such a transformation of the view of reality can positively affect the view of “mental disorder.” The aim of psychiatric treatment should not be to conform patients to the “only one same reality” (which is illusory), but to gear (or accommodate) different realities to each other., 11784023

    Philosophies, 4, 2, 1, 14, Apr. 2019, [Peer-reviewed], [Invited], [Last author], [Internationally co-authored], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, In this essay we critically evaluate the progress that has been made in solving the problem of meaning in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. We remain skeptical about solutions based on deep neural networks and cognitive robotics, which in our opinion do not fundamentally address the problem. We agree with the enactive approach to cognitive science that things appear as intrinsically meaningful for living beings because of their precarious existence as adaptive autopoietic individuals. But this approach inherits the problem of failing to account for how meaning as such could make a difference for an agent’s behavior. In a nutshell, if life and mind are identified with physically deterministic phenomena, then there is no conceptual room for meaning to play a role in its own right. We argue that this impotence of meaning can be addressed by revising the concept of nature such that the macroscopic scale of the living can be characterized by physical indeterminacy. We consider the implications of this revision of the mind-body relationship for synthetic approaches., 11784023

  • Defining Sameness by Difference: A Phenomenological Investigation
    Shigeru Taguchi
(CD-ROM), 34th, 343, 349, Sep. 2017, [Peer-reviewed], [Invited], [Lead author, Corresponding author]
Japanese, Research society, The aim of this article is to propose a universal method to
fundamentally understand what “sameness” means, and how
it is possible to subsist. We could not perceive anything if
there were no difference at all in our experience. Our
experience of the same thing is essentially mediated by
multiple differences. Given that differences are ubiquitous
and fundamental, “sameness” can be interpreted as “nulled
difference.” To perceive something as a same thing means
that in our experience, there occur counteractions to certain
differences. The same is the effect of such counteractions to
differences, which makes a contrast with straightforward
differences. This contrast — which is a sort of difference
again — distinguishes the same from its background
differences. Accordingly, I claim that sameness can be
defined by (and reduced to) difference. To support this claim,
I refer to empirical experimental knowledge concerning
fixational eye movement, vision of toads, neural adaptation,
and the nature of neuron., 11784023

  • Using category theory to assess the relationship between consciousness and integrated information theory
Naotsugu Tsuchiya; Shigeru Taguchi; Hayato Saigo
    Neuroscience Research, 107, 1, 7, Jun. 2016, [Peer-reviewed], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, One of the most mysterious phenomena in science is the nature of conscious experience. Due to its subjective nature, a reductionist approach is having a hard time in addressing some fundamental questions about consciousness. These questions are squarely and quantitatively tackled by a recently developed theoretical framework, called integrated information theory (IIT) of consciousness. In particular, IIT proposes that a maximally irreducible conceptual structure (MICS) is identical to conscious experience. However, there has been no principled way to assess the claimed identity. Here, we propose to apply a mathematical formalism, category theory, to assess the proposed identity and suggest that it is important to consider if there exists a proper translation between the domain of conscious experience and that of the MICS. If such translation exists, we postulate that questions in one domain can be answered in the other domain; very difficult questions in the domain of consciousness can be resolved in the domain of mathematics. We claim that it is possible to empirically test if such a functor exists, by using a combination of neuroscientific and computational approaches. Our general, principled and empirical framework allows us to assess the relationship between the domain of consciousness and the domain of mathematical structures, including those suggested by IIT.

, 27958802, [Invited], [International presentation]

An Inquiry into the Good (1990), Place and Dialectic

The Essence of Individuality in Kitaro Nishida’s works Liberalism and East Asian/Chinese economic development: Perspectives from Europe and Asia(Routledge, 近刊)と題する論文集に収録される予定である。
Self and (its) Realization(s)と題する国際会議を企画し、研究代表者との協力のもと、北海道大学で同会議を開催した。

    1. According to the Husserl seeing images has three factors. 1) image-thing (upon which an image appears), 2) image-object (image which appears) and 3) image-sujet (the depicted object itself). And the latter two have the relation of resemblance. But by this alone the phenomenon of image is not yet realized. For that , it is necessary for us to interrupt positing the being of the image-object (neutral modification). OGUMA studied this modification. TAGUCHI studied the resemblance and the relation of resemblance and the passivity of image-experience. 2. KIYOZUKA analysed the relation between what is seen and what is represented. 3. YAMADA argued the relationship between perception and concept in reference to Wittgenstein's thought about "Aspect Switching". 4. OGUMA also studied the relationship between perception and meaning. According to Husserl, two factors of perception(sensation and meaning) come to being through the medium of Inner Time-consciousness.

  • Implications of the Phenomenological Egology for the Theory of Truth and Reason: A Study based on the Husserlian Phenomenology
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    2010 - 2013
    TAGUCHI Shigeru
This project focused on the concept of "evidence" that plays a crucial role in Husserl's phenomenology. It was investigated in detail how evidence relates to the concept of "ego" as an important basis for his later phenomenology and what thought of "truth" is suggested by phenomenology on the basis of such a relationship between evidence and ego. This investigation was carried out through a close examination of Husserl's published works and his (partly unpublished) research manuscripts. The result of this investigation was critically evaluated by comparison with associated studies in analytic philosophy, cognitive sciences, and science studies.

Cultures cannot be “objectively” conceived from “outside”, precisely because theresearcher himself belongs to a specific culture of his own. However, one-s “ownculture” is itself never pure, but a hybrid. Thus, what is “between” one-s ownculture and foreign cultures becomes the central problem. In this “between-ness”,a culture opens/closes itself to foreign cultures; therefore, the “between” itselfpulsates. This project provided a hub where younger researchers could work, andphenomenological investigations into the pulsating movement of interculturality wereconducted from the five perspectives of “language”, “encounter”, “coexistence”,“spirit”, and “time”, thereby clarifying some important conditions for theintercultural “culturing” of cultures.

  • Transformation of the Concept of "Reason" in Phenomenology : Husserl and Levinas
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    2007 - 2010
    TAGUCHI Shigeru
Husserl's concept of "reason" traces our discursive reason back to a kind of intuitive reason as "evidence". On the basis of such a "reduction" Husserl sharpens the question about "measure" and "ground" of thinking, which consequently brings about an "egological" and "ethical" turn in phenomenology. Husserl's concept of "primal I" and "phenomenologizing I" as well as that of "responsibility" carried by such an "I" provide a clue to understanding Levinas's thought of "subjectivity" and "reason" in a phenomenological way. The concept of "reason" proposed by Levinas can be interpreted as such an ethical one that signifies "awakening" from self-intoxication of cognitive reason.
