Japanese, The effect of C content in steels on the formation of an Al-containing carbide layer by an Al pack method at 980°C was investigated. The continuous layer consisting of an outer β-FeAl and inner Fe3AlC layers was formed on Fe-1.2C (in wt.%) by a short process time. An α-Fe(Al) layer with Fe3AlC precipitates was formed below the β-FeAl layer on Fe-0.7C after 16 h of process, thereafter an Fe3AlC layer was formed between the β-FeAl and α-Fe(Al) + Fe3AlC layers after 25 h. The β-FeAl and α-Fe(Al)+ Fe3AlC layers were formed on Fe-0.1C, but a continuous Fe3AlC layer was not developed after longer treatment. A continuous Fe3AlC layer formed by an Al pack method was explained by carbon enrichment at the α-Fe(Al)/γ-Fe(C) interface due to an inward growth of the α-Fe(Al) layer. - The Effects of Al Addition on the Oxidation Behavior of Ni–Fe–Cr–Nb Alloys at 800 °C in Air

Scientific journal, The study focuses on obtaining Inconel 625-NbC composites for high-temperature applications, e.g., jet engines, waste-to-energy combusting systems or gas engine turbines, and characterizing them in terms of their microstructure and hardness improvement. Synthesis was performed utilizing Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) at 1150 °C under the load of 45 MPa in medium vacuum (under 10−3 MPa) for a total time of 60 min. Four sets of samples with different Inconel 625 to NbC weight ratios were prepared (5, 10, 20, and 30 wt.%), followed by a reference sample containing no ceramic reinforcement. Obtained materials were hot-rolled at 1150 °C with a 10% reduction step and later cut and polished to perform characterization utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) module and microhardness testing device equipped with Vickers indenter. Hardness was improved proportionally to NbC addition achieving an increase of up to 20% of reference values. Additional heat treatment was conducted on the hot-rolled samples at 1200 °C in an argon atmosphere to further observe the interaction between reinforcement and alloy. Their microstructure revealed the coarsening of precipitates within the metal matrix and partial reinforcement dissolution, which proved to be crucial to obtaining the highest quality composites with homogenous hardness improvement. - Stress measurement in the iron oxide scale formed on pure Fe during isothermal transformation by in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction

English, Oxidation behavior of TiAl3 and L12 coated Ti-45at%Al-5at%Nb alloys at 1173K in air was investigated using mass gain measurement, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron-probe microanalysis, glow discharge optical electron spectroscopy, and glancing angle X-ray diffraction analysis. The TiAl3 formed meta-stable alumina θ-Al2O3, while the oxide scale on the L12 consisted of a duplex structure with an outer rutile TiO2 and an inner α-Al2O3. During the very initial stages of oxidation both Ti and Al in the L12 coating could be oxidized, and then the faster diffusing Ti goes out to form an outer, continuous Ti-rich oxide which covers the slow growing Al2O3. In case of the TiAl3 an outer, continuous TiO2 layer was not observed because of the smaller amount of Ti in the TiAl3. It could be concluded that the outer, Ti-rich oxide enhanced a phase transformation of Al2O3 from θ to α. To elucidate the Ti effect, Ti-vapor treated TiAl3 and Ni-50at%Al were oxidized at 1173K in air, and showed formation of an α-Al2O3, in contrast to θ-Al2O3 on their bare alloys. - Microstructure! Japanese, The phases and microstructure of the alloy layer formed during hot dipping of carbon steels in molten Zn-Al bath were investigated. Pure iron, 0.2%C and 0.82%C steels and 2.45%C cast iron were used. A plate shape specimen of 300μm in thickness was firstly hot dipped in a molten Zn bath for 3s and then hot dipped in a molten Zn-6mass%Al alloy bath for certain times, and quenched with water. The microstructure of the quenched specimen was observed by using a SEM, and change in thickness of the specimen was measured by using a laser microscope. The pure iron specimen was entirely changed to an intermetallic compound of Fe2Al5(Zn) phase after 1.2ks hot dipping. The thickness of 0.2%C steel specimen was decreased linearly with the dipping time after an early non-reaction period, and 2/3 of the specimen was changed to the Fe2Al5(Zn) phase after 3.6ks hot dipping. It was observed that primarily precipitated ferrite phase preferentially reacted and pearlite structure scarcely reacted. The reacted thickness of the 0.82%C steel and cast iron specimens were only several μm after 86.4Ks hot dipping. In the cast iron specimen, cementite reacted with Al and an Al3C4 phase was formed. The growth of the alloy layer was restricted by the Al3C4 phase. A heat-treated 0.2%C steel specimen with sorbite structure also exhibited the same low reaction behavior as the 0.82% C steel due to homogenized ferrite + cementite structure. - Effect of Mg and Si on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of Zn-Al hot dip coatings on low carbon steel

本研究の目的は、耐熱合金中の析出物の組織が材料の高温耐酸化性におよぼす影響を明らかにすることにある。今年度は、昨年度から引き続きアルミナ皮膜の形成に及ぼす高Al金属間化合物相のサイズの影響を調査するとともに、Ti添加によるアルミナ形成合金の耐酸化性の低下(アルミナ形成能あるいは維持能の低下)を、合金中にTi化合物を形成させることによる無害化を検討した。
Ni-Cr-Al系のγ+γ'二相合金を用いた検討からは、実験開始時の昇温速度の違いにより酸化初期の高温酸化挙動に明確な違いがあることが明らかになった。昇温速度が速い場合、微細なγプライム相を有する合金の酸化量は増加した。これは22年度の結果とは逆の結果であったが、昇温速度が遅い場合には、微細なγプライム相を有する合金の酸化量が低下した。酸化挙動に及ぼす合金組織の影響が、昇温速度によって全く逆の結果となった理由は、微細なγプライム相を有する合金上には、昇温速度が速い場合、酸化初期に準安定相であるθアルミナが、一方、昇温速度が遅い場合、安定層であるαアルミナが形成するためであることが明らかとなった。このような初期酸化挙動の違いは、アルミナの相変態に影響をおよぼす添加元素のCrの影響がγプライム相のサイズによって異なったためであると説明された。
Fe基合金上のアルミナ皮膜形成におよぼすTiの悪影響に関する検討では、炭素添加によりTiCを形成させてTiを固定化することによりTiの無害化を検討したが、TiCによる固定化は耐酸化性に殆ど影響を与えないことが分かった。

The effect of Al, Cr and Reactive elements(REs) on the microstructure of alumina scale was investigated in order to enhance the oxidation resistance of an alumina scale by microstructure control.
The grain size of alumina scale became smaller with higher Al and Cr contents in alloys. The effect of those elements on the grain size of alumina is attributed to an increase of rate of nucleation due to higher supersaturation of alumina in the subsurface region. RE addition was also found to decrease the grain size of alumina. It was found that RE, which is segregated at grain boundaries of alumina suppresses the grain coarsening during high-temperature oxidation.
In order to form the alumina scale with lower growth rate, it is proposed that the alloys must have proper composition which allows to form the coarse alumina grains from the very initial oxidation.

In this study, alumina scale forming austenitic heat resistant steels, which have better producibility, workability, and high-temperature oxidation resistance was proposed. Cu addition to austenitic heat resistant steels was found to stabilize the gamma-phase and suppress formation of intermetallic compounds such as beta-NiAl. Thus higher Al addition in steels can be acceptable, which is beneficial for both production and oxidation resistance by forming alumina-scale. From the interdiffusion study, copper was found to have negative interaction with aluminum in gamma-matrix, which enhanced aluminum outward diffusion toward the steel surface. This enhanced aluminum supply from the substrate were considered to promote an exclusive alumina scale formation. Copper addition to austenitic steels shows potential for development of new heat resistant steels.

In order to construct the database of alloys for the prediction of casting structure, Items and methods that are required for the construction were investigated. The heterogeneous nucleation parameters for aluminum base alloys were evaluated.
1) Evaluation of heterogeneous nucleation frequency distribution
In order to select the nucleation model for the database, sample alloys such as pure Al, Al-Cu, Al-Si, Al-Fe, Al-Ti were melted and dispersed by stirring in K_2S0_4-Li_2SO_4 molten salt Each dispersed particle of alloys was re-melted and its melting point was measured in the K_2SO_4-Li_2SO_4 molten salt. As the result, the nucleation frequency of each particle increased with increasing undercooling, but decreased at the highest undercooling. It was confirmed that a simple power form with respect to undercooling for the expression of heterogeneous nucleation was adopted for conventional casting condition.
2) Heat transfer analysis for a multi-component alloy by using thermodynamic calculation
In the present study, the nucleation parameters of alloys were evaluated by comparing experimentally obtained structures and simulated ones. In order to carry out the simulation for the structure formation of a multi-component alloy, precise heat transfer calculation is needed to produce the same temperature field with the casting obtained by the experiment. In order to simulate the heat transfer process during the solidification of a multi-component alloy, a new method was developed based on the enthalpy method by using a thermodynamic calculation.
3) Evaluation of nucleation parameter for aluminum alloys
Unidirectional solidification experiment of aluminum base binary and commercial alloys were carried out. Experimentally observed locations of columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) were simulated by a method based on the Monte Carlo procedure, and nucleation parameters were determined by producing the locations of CET for each sample. The nucleation parameters, which are expressed as a power with respect to undercooling, increased with increasing silicon content for both binary and commercial aluminum base alloys.
It is expected that the structure of more large or complicated casting can be predicted by using above parameters which can be evaluated by a laboratory scale experiment.
