- Cooperation beyond group boundaries is evaluated differently depending on the existence of intergroup competition

Frontiers in Behavioral Economics, 4, Frontiers Media SA, 07 Mar. 2025, [Peer-reviewed]
English, Scientific journal, Do reputational mechanisms hinder or promote cooperation beyond group boundaries? This study explores the possibility that individuals lose reputational benefits within their group when they cooperate beyond group boundaries. We examined the evaluations of those who cooperated only with ingroup members (i.e., ingroup favoring strategy) and those who cooperated with both ingroup and outgroup members (i.e., universalistic strategy) by manipulating the existence of intergroup competition through an incentivized behavioral experiment. The results show that individuals' reputations were evaluated differently depending on conditions. In the competitive condition, the ingroup favoring strategy was evaluated more positively than the universalistic strategy. In the non-competitive condition, the universalistic strategy was evaluated as positively as the ingroup favoring strategy. The reputational dynamics of indirect reciprocity are less likely to promote cooperation beyond group boundaries, particularly in the existence of intergroup competition. - The role of social sciences in research on human evolution and history

English, Scientific journal, The discovery of hidden laws in data is the core challenge in many fields, from the natural sciences to the social sciences. However, this task has historically relied on human intuition and experience in many areas, including psychology. Therefore, discovering laws using artificial intelligence (AI) has two significant advantages. First, it makes it possible to detect laws that humans cannot discover. Second, it will help construct more accurate theories. An AI called AI-Feynman was released in a very different field, and it performed impressively. Although AI-Feynman was initially designed to discover laws in physics, it can also work well in psychology. This research aims to examine whether AI-Feynman can be a new data analysis method for inter-temporal choice experiments by testing whether it can discover the hyperbolic discount model as a discount function. An inter-temporal choice experiment was conducted to accomplish these objectives, and the data were input into AI-Feynman. As a result, seven discount function candidates were proposed by AI-Feynman. One candidate was the hyperbolic discount model, which is currently considered the most accurate. The three functions of the root-mean-squared errors were superior to the hyperbolic discount model. Moreover, one of the three candidates was more “hyperbolic” than the standard hyperbolic discount function. These results indicate two things. One is that AI-Feynman can be a new data analysis method for inter-temporal choice experiments. The other is that AI-Feynman can discover discount functions that humans cannot find. - Reputation of Those Who Cooperate Beyond Group Boundaries: A Comparison of Universalistic and In-Group Favoring Strategies.

Japanese, Scientific journal, When people behave more cooperatively toward in-group members than to out-group members, we call it "in-group favoring behavior." However, previous studies have not yet provided a satisfactory explanation for why in-group favoritism can be adaptive. In the current study, we conducted a series of simulations to explain such behaviors from an evolutionary perspective. We used the giving game and constructed a society composed of two groups, A and B. In the game, every player was given a fixed amount of resources and decided how much and to whom he gave. The results showed that the in-group favoring strategy is adaptive only when it has a strict criterion for recipients (not giving any resources to players who had helped other players who did not adopt the in-group favoring strategy). Furthermore, they showed that there were other strategies which have a strict criterion for recipients that could be adaptive as well. These findings suggest that strategies which form a circle of exchange only among themselves by excluding other strategies can be adaptive. - Comparison of the effects of exchange forms on social solidarity

Japanese, Scientific journal, Humans have a predisposition to take punitive action toward unfairness, even when the target is a stranger. Experiments using the ultimatum game have revealed that the unfair intent of the proposer plays an important role in determining action toward alleviating unfairness on the part of the disadvantaged. This study utilized a similar experimental paradigm to examine whether this same result can be seen when a third party, rather than the disadvantaged him/herself, attempts to restitute fairness. Results indicated that the level of punishment was greater in the unfair-intent condition relative to no-intent. However, even in the no-intent condition, many participants preferred to punish (63%, 40 of 63 participants) in this study involving third-party punishment, compared to previous studies of second-party punishment (15 to 18%). Inequity-aversion of resources regardless of intention appears to play a much greater role in third-party punishment than in the second-party punishment, in which reciprocity plays a prominent role. - The emergence of generalized exchange by indirect reciprocity

Japanese, Scientific journal, This study shows, through a series of computer simulation on the role that altruistic behavior plays in particular social relations, that acting in an altruistic way can bring out outcomes that is beneficial to the actor him/herself. The present study specifically focuses on the individual-to-individual kind of altruistic behavior, not on the individual-to-collectivity type. It was shown that "downward OFT" strategy with a moderate level of others' worth, when this strategy is shared by all group members, promotes altruistic behavior in the group. Specifically, results of computer simulations show the followings: In the situation where group members select the target of their altruistic action on the basis of whether the target him/herself acted altruistically in the past, ones who act altruistically toward more people do receive more benefit from others than those who did not act so altruistically.

Japanese, Scientific journal, Two kinds of trust-general truat and particularistic trust-are theoretically distinguished. An experiment simulating buyer-seller relations successfully tested the following hypotheses concerning the effects of social uncertainty and subjects'general trust upon (a) commitment formation between a particular buyer and a seller and (b) the buyer's particularitsic trust in the seller. First, social uncertainty promoted commitment formation. Second, commitment formation promoted one partner's trust n the other (which we called particularistic trust). Third, as a result of the above two effects, social uncertainty promoted the general level of particularistic trust in a group. Fourth, general trust, which was defined as a general belief in human benevolence, suppressed commitment formation. However, the fifth hypothesis based on the second and the fourth hypotheses was not supported. That is, general trust did not suppress particularistic trust.

The current research project aims to investigate the relationship between the mechanism that explains societal differences of trust and the mechanism that explains trust building within dyads. Two laboratory experiments were conducted. The result of the first experiment showed that trust developed as a result of a high level of cooperation in repeated interaction. Trustworthiness did not develop, however. The result of the second experiment showed that the trustworthiness of the trustee was not higher when he felt that he was trusted more than the other trustees. These results imply that further investigation of the process of trust and trustworthiness is necessary.

This study examined how "collective intelligence" emerges in human groups, by conceptually linking it to "swarm intelligence" by social insects -- the macro phenomenon that has attracted considerable attention in biology and informatics. By collaborating researchers of ants, we experimentally examined information search behavior by 40 colonies of ants (each with about 200 individuals) as well as 40 human groups ((each with about 200 individuals). Results showed that, compared to ant colonies, human groups exhibited greater frequency-dependent conformity bias, which decreased their plasticity in response to changes in adaptive environment.

Based on economic game experiments, brain scan studies, and gene allele analysis, this study provides a series of evidence to support the social niche construction theory of human prosociality, according to which human prosociality is understood as an adaptation to the social environment consisting of other humans’adaptive behavior in which acting in prosocial manner enhances the long-term fitness of the actor. We provide a series of evidence supporting the view that cultural differences in the functioning of human mind reflect differences in the social niche to which the mind is to adapt, as well as evidence that differences in the psychological mechanism that induces individuals to behave prosocially also reflect the characteristics of the social niches to which they adapt.

Large-scale cooperation between unrelated individuals is pervasive only in human societies. The most well-known mechanism to make mutual cooperation possible is sanctioning. Previous experimental studies have shown that people engage in sanctioning even when it is costly. By reexamining such “verified sanctioning behaviors”, the current study showed that sanctioning behaviors do not reflect individual preferences directly. Rather, they are heavily context-dependent. Furthermore, the function of sanctioning is not necessarily the direct effect of transformation of incentive structure. Rather, the joint effect of sanctioning and assortative interaction may make the belief that sanctioning exists reality.

Large-scale cooperation among unrelated self-interested individuals is one of the most notable characteristics of human society. A social dilemma (SD) problem, which is a typical formalization, has been considered a difficult puzzle to solve. The current study focused on linkage, which has been proposed recently as a new solution, and examined psychological mechanisms that cause linkage. The results suggested that the existence of shared belief of linkage is not a necessary condition for linkage to emerge. Rather, people engaged in linkage based on internal attribution and impression evaluation of the others. In a theoretical study, although linkage between SD and generalized exchange can constitute equilibrium, linkage between SD and direct exchange cannot. These results are inconsistent with empirical data and remain a problem to be solved in the future.

This study aimed to investigate (1) the emotional and cognitive system underlying social norms, and (2) adaptive foundations of large-scale cooperation (often called generalized reciprocity or exchange) that characterizes human groups. By combining evolutionary game modeling with behavioral, cognitive, physiological and brain-imaging experiments, we examined roles of cognitive control of emotions in empathy, neural correlates of distributive justice, functions of group membership in aintenance of generalized exchange systems.

Why it is possible to achieve a large-scale mutual cooperation among unrelated self-interested individuals is the core question of the current study. Although this question has not been solved theoretically in previous studies, the current study found certain future directions in order to resolve the problem. We found that we need to build a theoretical framework that incorporates two factors. First, the situation to achieve mutual cooperation and the other situations where interdependency exists among individuals are not independent : they influence each other. Second, sanctioners who try to maintain mutual cooperation may receive benefits in other situations although they have to pay the cost of sanctioning in the current situation

The goal of this study was to clarify the mechanisms that promote voluntarily based social order, not constrained by the closed nature of social relations, in a situation in which provision is "assurance" of security based on commitment relations is not possible. We used "artificial societies" created in the laboratory to achieve this goal. As a means to achieve this goal, we found that building a trust relationship (i.e., transforming an opportunistic relationship into a trust relationship) requires risk taking. We further identified socio-relational and socio-institutional conditions that are required for this transformation. Specifically, our results indicate the followings. ◆Risk taking plays an indispensable role in building a trust relationship. ◆In building a trust relationship, a strategy to cooperate while reducing the risk of trusting to the minimal is highly effective. ◆The role that reputation plays in reducing the agency problem caused by information asymmetry varies depending on the nature of the society or market-whether it is open or closed. Negative reputation is effective in closed societies, and positive reputation is effective in closed societies. ◆Punishment of non-cooperators in a group is produced by a different psychological mechanism that produces punishment of out-group defectors. ◆Heuristics explain cooperation in a one-shot Prisoner's Dilemma game better than utility transformation model. ◆Expectation of generalized exchange within a group is indispensable in cooperation toward in-group members, whether the groups are minimal groups or nationality groups. However, it is not a necessary condition for cooperation toward in-group members when interactions among group members exist. ◆Experience of collectivistic social institutions make collectivistic (or interdependent) self-construal and causal attribution (i.e., collectivistic belief system) salient.
