Optical cavities provide a promising route to investigate strong light–matter coupling effects on studies for electrochemistry. Integrating cavity structures with electrochemical electrodes need optimized design. Here, we report the fabrication of open-cavity electrodes consisting of a cavity length-defined dielectric spacer and thin Au mirrors. One of the mirrors equipes the function of the electrode to maintain absolute electrochemical potential. The resulting structures exhibit well-defined Fabry–Perot resonances while maintaining electrochemical functionality, providing a scalable platform for exploring light–matter coupling effects at electrified interfaces. - Temperature-tunable Fabry–Perot cavity for aqueous systems

Scientific journal, In this work, a comparative life cycle assessment of the solvothermal synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF‐8) is reported. ZIF‐8 is listed among the most representative structures of ZIFs, an emerging subclass of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). ZIF‐8 is commonly synthesized through the solvothermal method, and the election solvents are currently N , N ‐dimethylformamide (DMF) and water, both allowing the production of highly crystalline ZIF‐8 with a high specific surface area. Considering the recently introduced severe restrictions on the use of DMF as defined very recently by European Chemical Agency, an innovative synthetic procedure in the biobased and nontoxic glycerol carbonate (GlyC) was reported. This approach delivers mesoporous ZIF‐8 with high crystallinity and high specific surface area. The present study suggests a cradle‐to‐gate life cycle assessment of the laboratory scale ZIF‐8 synthesis, comparing the same process in DMF and GlyC in terms of their environmental impacts. The results help to demonstrate that the respect of the 7 th principle of green chemistry (using GlyC instead of DMF) does not necessarily embody, at present, a sustainable choice. - A Non-Autonomous Amphoteric Metal Hydroxide Oscillations and Pattern Formation in Hydrogels.

English, Scientific journal, Oscillations in animate and inanimate systems are ubiquitous phenomena driven by sophisticated chemical reaction networks. Non-autonomous chemical oscillators have been designed to mimic oscillatory behavior using programmable syringe pumps. Here, we investigated the non-autonomous oscillations, pattern formation, and front propagation of amphoteric hydroxide (aluminum (III), zinc (II), tin (II), and lead (II)) precipitates under controlled pH conditions. A continuous stirred-tank reactor with modulated inflows of acidic and alkaline solutions generated pH oscillations, leading to periodic precipitation and dissolution of metal hydroxides in time. The generated turbidity oscillations exhibited ion-specific patterns, enabling their characterization through quantitative parameters such as peak width (W) and asymmetry (As). The study of mixed metal cationic systems showed that turbidity patterns contained signatures of both hydroxides due to the formation of mixed hydroxides and oxyhydroxides. The reaction-diffusion setup in solid hydrogel columns produced spatial precipitation patterns depending on metal cations and their concentrations. Additionally, in the case of tin (II), a propagating precipitation front was observed in a thin precipitation layer. These findings provide new insights into precipitation pattern formation and open avenues for metal ion identification and further exploration of complex reaction-diffusion systems. - Temporal pH waveforms generated in an enzymatic reaction network in batch and cell-sized microcompartments

We investigated molecular polariton states formed by the interaction between molecules at the electrode surface and the resonant electromagnetic fields of structured electrodes, aiming to develop a novel catalytic electrode based on this concept. We established a method for structural control of electrodes and ensured the electrochemical stability of electrodes functioning as optical cavities. Based on this, we performed high-resolution spectroscopic measurements to elucidate molecular responses under resonant conditions, and clarified the detailed vibrational and polarization characteristics associated with polariton formation. Utilizing these fundamental techniques, we demonstrated the impact of structured electrodes on electrochemical reactions involving multiple electron and proton transfers, and ultimately achieved hydrogen evolution activity even on non-catalytic metal surfaces.

金属ナノ構造を二次元配列した表面格子構造を利用することで、Surface Lattice Resonance (SLR) モードを誘起する事が可能となる。色素分子をSLR特性を有する金属ナノ構造配列電極に対して結合させ、ポラリトン状態を観測した。真空場の空間広がりによりコヒーレントな分子数の増大が実現され、結合強度が最大で0.5 程度の値を示す超強結合状態となる系の創出にも成功した。本系においては特徴的な多準位系のポラリトン状態とピークの半値幅としても0.1 eVを下回る先鋭なピークが観測され、SLRに由来した長寿命なポラリトン状態が形成していると考えられる。さらに有機太陽電池にも利用可能な色素においても同様に超強結合状態が観測され、汎用的な色素系に対する電子状態制御が構築可能なプラットフォームの構築に成功した。
強結合状態における電子移動反応に関して、報告されている理論に基づき、電極ー電解質界面での電子移動反応系への適用を検討した。従来のMarcus理論と同様に電極電位、電子状態密度および再配列エネルギーによってその電子移動速度は変調を受けるが、強結合状態においては仮想励起状態を介した電子移動反応が可能となることが示唆された。さらには、モード体積およびコヒーレントな分子数を設定することにより、強結合状態での特異な電子移動反応速度の加速が示唆された。独自に構築した理論を用いて強結合電極での実験結果の解析を行い、理論の妥当性を検証した。

本年度は、沈殿の離散的析出により自己組織化的に形成されるリーゼガングパターン (LP) 形成機構の標準モデル構築に向け、物質拡散流束とパターン周期の関係解明に関する研究と、自然界に遍在するリーゼガング型類似機構解明への展開を目指し、類似の幾何学構造として知られるボロノイ図へのLP形成機構の応用を模索した。
・拡散流束とLPの関係性解明
実験として、ゲル上部に注ぐ電解質溶液(拡散源)の濃度を固定しその溶液体積のみを変化させた。具体的には、ゲル体積と拡散源体積の拡散平衡に基づく計算を基に、時間変化と共に拡散源濃度が変化していく条件1 と、拡散源濃度が常に一定に保たれる条件2を検証した。その結果、実験開始時の拡散源初期濃度が同値であるにも関わらず、条件2の方がLPの沈殿領域の間隔がより狭くなった。更に、異なる拡散流束の時間変化を考慮可能な反応拡散モデルを構築し、それを基にシミュレーションを行い実験結果と比較した。その結果、拡散流束が大きいほど間隔の狭い沈殿パターンが得られ、実験結果が拡散流束の変化を反映した結果であることを明確化した。以上の結果を基に、LPの周期性変化が拡散流束の関数として一義的に表記可能であることを見出し、構造周期の分岐の有無関わらず、拡散流束がLP周期の決定において重要な役割を担うことを明らかとした。
・LP形成系のボロノイ図への応用
自然界のボロノイ図の代表例であるトンボの翅構造に着目し、ゼラチンの光架橋反応とN-イソプロピルアミド (NIPAM) の重合反応をLP形成系にて複合させることで、ボロノイ図の形成を目指したが、期待されるような幾何学構造は得られなかった。その原因として、本系は1. ゼラチンの架橋、2. NIPAMの拡散、3. NIPAMの重合反応の3つの素過程の速度論的バランスを考慮する必要があり、それらの調整の適正化を行えなかったことが挙げられる。
