    札幌, EUからの離脱、スコットランドの独立問題、そして2度にわたる総選挙など、2010年代のイギリスでは、その進路をめぐっての政治的選択がおこなわれてきました。こうしたイギリスの〈現在(いま)〉を考えるためには、歴史的視点が必要となるでしょう。帝国からの撤退、ヨーロッパとの連合という国際関係の変化は、国内におけるスコットランドやウェールズでの地域主義の動きを噴出させてきました。また第二次世界大戦を起点とする福祉国家体制の確立、「英国病」とサッチャリズムの登場というかたちでの二大政党間の政治的コンセンサスの変化。そして、経済成長と移民の流入による階級社会から多文化社会への変容。国際関係や政治・経済のみならず、社会や文化をめぐる複雑な要因が絡み合いながら揺れ動くイギリスの姿を、戦後のあゆみのなかに位置づけていっしょに考えてみましょう。, [Invited], [Domestic Conference]

    今日の西洋史研究は、研究の細分化・専門化が著しく進行し、その結果、研究全体のありようが非常に見えにくくなっています。これからの歴史学を展望するためにも、まずは、これまでの日本における西洋史研究をふり返ってみる必要がありそうです。このシンポジウムでは、戦後西洋史学の重大な転機となっただけでなく、20世紀末における知の一大トレンドとなった「社会史」の勃興に焦点を合せることにしました。「社会史」勃興の立役者となった雑誌『社会史研究』と角山榮・川北稔編『路地裏の大英帝国』の刊行に、当時、それぞれ若手研究者として関わったお二人の報告者に当時の知的環境をお話しいただき、さらに、西洋史と日本史を専門とするお二人のコメンテーターに、後継世代の視点から、議論の俎上にのせるべきイシューを提示していただきます。「社会史」のあり方については、「下からの」歴史学や、日常性の重視、消費の復権、社会の周縁への注目などさまざまな理解が可能ですが、そこには、旧態依然とした方法論に飽き足らず、研究パラダイムの刷新をはかりたいという想いが通奏低音として流れ, [Domestic Conference]

    一橋大学, グローバル時代に求められる歴史叙述とは、どのようなものなのだろうか。多くの歴史家は、現実の動きに翻弄されがちで、その方向性を見定めることは極めて難しくなっている。だが、そうした問いに対するヒントを与えてくれる書物が刊行された。まさに『グローバル時代の歴史叙述』(Writing History in the Global Era, New York : W.W. Norton, 2014)という題名をもつ、リン・ハントの著作である。この報告では、社会史から言語論的転回への史学史上の転換に関するみずからの研究のアウトラインを提示しつつ、アメリカ歴史学の全体像を伝えるハントの著書の批判的検討を通じて、グローバル時代の日本における歴史学のあり方を考える素材を提供したいと思う。, [Domestic Conference]

    本研究は、「民衆的個人主義」をキー概念に、インナーシティ問題を背景として登場してくるコミュニティ・アクション(地域社会事業)を対 象として1970年代イギリスの福祉国家の再編過程における社会意識(主観性)の変容を、オーラルヒストリーやエゴ・ドキュメント研究の成果 による史料としての民衆的アーカイヴを駆使しながら、明らかにしようとするものである。
    戦後史の研究は、同時代の資料公開が進むなか で本格的な歴史研究が試みられるようになっている。そこでは、社会や文化の変容と絡めて戦後史を叙述する傾向が強く、本研究においては「 民衆的個人主義」をキー概念に検討をおこなう。それは、戦後福祉国家のなかで自己決定権を高めてきた民衆レベルでの個人主義であり、この 意識がコミュニティ・アクションとして発現したと考える。コミュニティ・アクションは戦後福祉国家史の転換点となるとともに、1970年代の 転形期のアモルファスな社会意識を集約したものであり、それをオーラルヒストリーやエゴ・ドキュメントなどの民衆的アーカイヴを活用する ことにより明らかにするものである。本研究では、コミュニティ・アクションによる住宅 問題への取り組みとして、公営住宅をめぐる賃貸人の運動 (tenants’ movement)、またホームレス対策のなかでの「家屋占拠運動」(squattin g)について取り上げることにしたい。
    初年度の成果としては、角松生史ほか編 『縮小社会における法的空間 ケアと包摂 』日本評論社 2022年2月19日に第14章「コミュニティ・アクションの誕生―1970年代の危機と福祉国家史の再検討」を執筆した。また大門正克, 長谷川貴彦編『「生きること」の問い方 歴史の現場から 』日本経済評論社 2022年1月31日に、論点１「近世から近代を生きる」、論点２「新自由主義の物語を超えて」を執筆した。

    Japan has entered the era of full scale population decline. The country will encounter downscaling of population, economy, and living space. Does the emergence of such a "shrinking society" cast serious challenges to the main pillar of public law?
    In this interdisciplinary research project, consisting of researchers in the forefront of law, social science and humanities, we have examined several important aspects of a shrinking society and public law, utilizing carefully selected overarching research keywords for each year (i.e. 2015: Care, 2016: Inclusion,2017: Community).

    This research project aims to make a survey of recent historiographies of ego-document mainly focusing on those in European countries. The project focused on the archival collections of ego-document in each country as well as on the methodological development to explore them. For instance, life-story approach opened the window for looking into the individual subjectivity including emotion or memory, once neglected aspects in historical studies. At the symposium of annual meeting for the Japan Western Historical Society in 2018, our project members explored the future possibilities of ego-document studies in their papers by taking the examples of ego-document from European historical experiences.

    More than one hundred years have passed since the “Western history” as a discipline of historical studies had been established in the Japanese academic world. Nobody may deny the contributions by historians of “Western history” to the development of the social sciences and humanities in Japan since the Meiji-period. On the other hand now we are aware of all sorts of problem which are inherent in this discipline. In this research project we tryed to reconsider the development and the present conditions of the "Western history" from perspective of East Asisn modern historiography.
    We organized several conferences and symposium in each year, in which we invited historians of "Western history" from South Korea. Part of the results was published on the journal "Shiso" (no. 1091) in 2015. We also started the "Japanese-Korean Forum of "Western History" as a platform of discussion between Japanese and Korean historians studying "Western history".

    This research project explores the relationship between the pauper letters, the administration of the poor relief and the experience of the English poor for the period 1780-1850. The project mainly concerns with the makeshift economy of the English poor, focusing on specific localities such as London, Essex, Birmingham and Manchester. This project analysed the form, content, rhetoric and usage of poverty narrative, with pauper letters, diaries and so on as its main sources.

    Japanese governmental system has undergone various significant reforms since the second half of the 1990s, which we see as the emergence of "structural-reform type of governance". In this interdisciplinary research project, we have analyzed such changes under the methodological framework of social constructivism. Utilizing chosen common research keywords for each year(2009 : participation, 2010 : responsibility/accountability, 2011 : relationship), we have examined several important aspects of "structural-reform type of governance" such as : citizen participation for city building, duty to explain, amendment of the Basic Act on Education, introduction of Saiban-in system, rights of the child.

    本研究では、福音主義とアソシエーションに焦点を当てイギリス名誉革命体制の統治構造の再編過程を考察した。福音主義者は、1780年代以降、日曜学校運動、奴隷貿易廃止運動などの団体を設立することによって中央と地方の関係を再編していった。とりわけ、サポレオン戦争期に設立された「貧民の状態改善協会」は、福祉に関わる情報収集団体として活動を行い、協会は集積された情報をもとに工場法などの社会政策立法に関与して、統治構造を変容させる社会改革を主導していったのである。

  • An Cultural Study on the Formation of the Concept of Englishness in England Since the Late Eighteenth Century

    The objective of this research lies in studying the historical contexts in which the concept of Englishness was formed in late Victorian and Edward periods, and its relations with other concepts (such as Britishness and cosmopolitanism), and by doing so, elucidating what the concept of Englishness is.What we have understood through our four-year research is that the concept of Englishness in this period can be defined as a reactionary mentality formed as a result of (1)the development of the industrial revolution since the late 18th century and its consequent phenomenon of urbanization (the development of cities), and (2)the imperialist development of the British Empire and its consequent phenomenon of racial and cultural diversification. As such, it is a culturally constructed concept with two tendencies of (1)ruralism ("Back to the Land") as a reaction to urbanization, and (2)"Little Englandism" as a reaction to imperialism.It is also a politically constructed concept deeply involved with the development of the nation-state nationalism (the problem of the "imagined community") in the Victorian period after the formation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. In this sense, it is closely connected with various phenomena including the creation of big dictionaries such as the OED and the DNB, the formation of the English literary canons and English literary study as a discipline, and the construction of the public statues of national heroes.As such, the construction of the concept of Englishness must be studied in the connection with a diversity of political, economic, social and cultural movements, and that is what we, scholars of literature and history, have aimed at in this interdisciplinary group research.

    Historical studies of the political society in early modern and modern Europe have been the theme of the research project 2002-6. Europe here means a wider one including not only the British Isles but also historical colonies in the Americas. The project team consists of 20 distinguished Japanese historians of Europe and America from the 16th to 19th centuries.The project has placed emphasis on the variety and divergence as well as the integrity and parallelism of historical experiences in Europe. The European civilization has been a touchstone of intellectuals, and it remains so in the study of humanities. Innumerable literature on composite states and political societies of historic Europe has been reviewed, common understanding among us through unending discussion is reached. International exchange and cooperation have loomed large. Not only the project members made frequent research visits to Europe and America and gave talks in international conferences, but also a number of leading historians overseas have been invited to seminars and conferences here. Specific knowledge and deeper understandings have been achieved, and the publications by the members have been remarkable. The website of the head of the team is weekly updated.The grant-in-aid has brought about a rich, successful product, and the present volume of research results is an interim report of a future publication of a wider academic significance.

  • イギリス名誉革命体制下における中央-地方関係の研究

    本研究は、アソシエーション(任意団体)の役割を組み込むことによって、名誉革命体制下における中央と地方の関係を再検討しようとするものである。アソシエーションの全国団体は、1780年代から地域レベルで実践される博愛主義的活動に関する情報の収集と交換、財政的援助、議会での立法化に向けたロビー活動を行うナショナル・センターとして設立された。とりわけ、ナポレオン戦争期に国教会福音主義者ウィリアム・ウィルバフォースらによって設立された「貧民の状態改善協会」(The Society for Bettering the Condition of the Poor)は、福祉に関わる情報の総合的な収集と分析、供与を行っていった。本研究は、この「協会」が発行した『活動報告集』(1797-1817)、オクスフォード大学ボードリアン図書館に残されているウィルバフォース文書、大英図書館所蔵の書簡史料などを中心に、「貧民の状態改善協会」の活動の実態を把握した。その結果、次のようなことが明らかになった。第一は、福祉国家起源論争に関わるものである。「協会」は、地方レベルでの福祉に関する情報を全国に拡大することによって、萌芽的な形態ではあるがナショナル・ミニマムを実現しようとする志向性を持っていたからである。第二は、同時代的な文脈でのヨーロッパ大陸の諸国家との比較体制論に関わるものである。「協会」は、中央と地方を媒介することによって、社会政策に関する近代的な中央官庁を欠いたイギリスがなぜに社会の解体を未然に防止し、工業化と重商主義戦争を遂行する事が可能だったかを明らかにすることになった。
