Japanese, Scientific journal, Redundancy analysis (RDA) was developed originally for descriptive data analysis of two sets of quantitative (continuous) variables, one set being dependent on the other. Israels (1984) generalized it to the case of qualitative (categorical) variables. In this paper we suggest a procedure (QRDA), extending RDA to deal with data described in terms of both qualitative and quantitative variables. For its evaluation, we give a Monte Carlo study to examine the stability of data analysis by QRDA, and demonstrate its validity. Further we discuss properties of QRDA in comparison with Israels' procedure on the point of eigenvalue problems, stating that the two procedures give the same eigenvector under a special condition on the data matrix. Then we show, on the basis of simulation study, that QRDA is more advantageous than Israels' procedure even in analyzing data in terms of qualitative variables only.

  • Pain and empathy: Exploring cognitive, physiological and neural foundations of social aspects of pain

How can we empathize with other's misfortune and pain? This question is a fundamental problem in social sciences as well as a key contemporary issue ranging from natural disasters to economic disparities in our society. This study aimed to develop a conceptual framework which serves as a common basis for interdisciplinary approaches examining social aspects of pain. We first reviewed various experimental as well as field studies about pain experiences and extracted several key dimensions that underlie the social aspects of physical pain. We then conducted a series of experiments that combined behavioral, cognitive, physiological as well as a brain-imaging measurements to address their proximate mechanisms. The results showed that human participants could adjust levels of empathetic responses properly even at the physiological level in line with specific physical condition where the empathized other was situated.

  • Research on socio-ecological bases of "primitive empathy" and its psychological architecture

Research on human ability to empathize with others is a core question encompassing natural sciences including evolutionary biology as well as human sciences, and constitutes one of the fundamental questions to understand human sociality. This project was focused on basic socio-emotional processes called "primitive empathy." This project revolved around theory-building about emotional synchronization within pairs, and has succeeded in empirically identifying a phenomenon called "facial mimicry." This is a phenomenon whereby a person replicates another person's facial expression on his/her own face. Related phenomena have been observed with mother-infant interactions, but only sporadic research exists as to the facial mimicry between non-kin adults. We hypothesized that facial mimicry serves to understand another person's emotional state in general. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a series of psycho-physiological experiments where a participant's facial electromyography (EMG) was measured while they were viewing video-clips about another individual's facial expression. The results supported our hypothesis, and suggested that facial mimicry may be a key psycho-physiological process underlying empathy.
