Anthropogenic noise disrupts animal communication, often prompting shifts toward higher-frequency signals to avoid masking by low-frequency noise. While such changes are typically attributed to behavioral plasticity in vocal species, this may not apply to non-vocal sound producers. We tested whether male grasshoppers ( Glyptobothrus maritimus ) exhibit morphological changes in response to noise by examining stridulatory organ density and courtship signal frequencies across habitats with varying traffic noise. In the first survey year, grasshoppers from the noisiest habitats had 13.4% higher organ density—a trait that may favor higher-frequency signals—than those from the quietest habitats. However, this difference became unclear in the following year. Additionally, courtship signal frequencies showed no positive relationship with organ density or noise. These findings suggest that elevated sound levels can induce short-term developmental processes that generate variation in sound-producing organs in non-vocal animals, underscoring how neglecting morphological plasticity, independent of signal modification, constrains understanding of ecological noise impacts. - Can coastal plantation forests substitute for natural coastal forests as bird and plant habitat? Understanding the current status of biodiversity is crucial to preventing its loss in a changing world. We examined changes in the geographical range size and abundance of 165 bird species breeding in Japan during the past 40 years, as well as temperature niche changes in the past 20 years. Higher temperatures were recorded within the ranges of non-native species than in those of native species, and we detected range-size expansion and increased abundance among non-native species. Although open-land species exhibited range reductions from the 1970s to the 1990s, many recovered and the ranges of only a few species declined after this period. Nevertheless, the abundance of open-land species did decline, despite range-size recovery; similar inconsistencies were detected for waterbirds and raptors. Analysis of long-term temperatures suggested that species left warmest areas within their distributions while maximum temperatures experienced by species during the survey years did not change systematically. Birds in warm regions may be facing a crisis, with attrition of native bird communities and expansion of non-native species. It is necessary to establish efficient measures to prevent further expansions of non-native species and conservation measures of native species within managed areas in warm regions with few intact habitats. - Short-term flooding in non-rice croplands provides stopover habitats for migrating waterbirds

Many long‐distance migratory birds are experiencing global declines, creating an urgent need for conservation actions. Engaging public commitment to their conservation is therefore crucial. However, this task is challenging as the social interest diminishes as the geographic distance to conservation issues increases. One potential solution is to reduce people's psychological distance by providing visual information that illustrates how avian migratory routes connect countries and how conservation organizations implement conservation measures in distant countries. In this study, we conducted a discrete choice experiment with the Japanese public (n = 1081) to estimate their willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation measures aimed at improving and protecting the wintering habitats of migratory birds in Southeast Asia (i.e., establishing wetland/forest nature reserves and implementing environmentally friendly farming/forestry). We tested the impact on WTP of showing respondents avian migratory routes and photographs of activities undertaken by conservation organizations in Southeast Asia. Contrary to predictions, showing the evidence‐based migratory routes connecting Japan and Southeast Asia had limited effects on the WTP of the Japanese public for conservation measures in Southeast Asia. Surprisingly, showing photographs of activities undertaken by conservation organizations in Southeast Asia had slightly negative impacts on WTP. Instead, WTP was strongly linked to subjective connection with nature (nature relatedness), with those exhibiting a stronger nature relatedness showing higher WTP. People showed higher WTP to establish nature reserves in Southeast Asia than to implement environmentally friendly farming/forestry in Southeast Asia, and there were weak negative interactions between implementing nature‐reserve establishment and environmentally friendly farming/forestry simultaneously. These findings suggest that providing visual information alone may not be effective to foster social support for conservation measures in distant countries. Rather, approaches that cultivate the connection with nature—such as environmental education, residential camps, and local nature experiences—are needed, ideally beginning from a young age. - Rare bird forecast: A combined approach using a long‐term dataset of an Arctic seabird and a numerical weather prediction model

Wildlife observation is a popular activity, and sightings of rare or difficult‐to‐find animals are often highly desired. However, predicting the sighting probabilities of these animals is a challenge for many observers, and it may only be possible by limited experts with intimate knowledge and skills. To tackle this difficulty, we developed user‐friendly forecast systems of the daily observation probabilities of a rare Arctic seabird (Ross's Gull Rhodostethia rosea) in a coastal area in northern Japan. Using a dataset gathered during 16 successive winters, we applied a machine learning technique of self‐organizing maps and explored how days with gull sightings were related to the meteorological pressure patterns over the Sea of Okhotsk (Method A). We also built a regression model that explains the relationship between gull sightings and local‐scale environmental factors (Method B). We then applied these methods with the operational global numerical weather prediction model (a computer simulation application about the fluid dynamics of Earth's atmosphere) to forecast the daily observation probabilities of our target. Method A demonstrated a strong dependence of gull sightings on the 16 representative weather patterns and forecasted stepwise observation probabilities ranging from 0% to 85.7%. Method B also showed that the strength of the northerly wind and the advancement of the season explained gull sightings and forecasted continuous observation probabilities ranging from 0% to 95.5%. Applying these two methods with the operational global numerical weather prediction model successfully forecasted the varied observation probabilities of Ross's Gull from 1 to 5 days ahead from November to February. A 2‐year follow‐up observation also validated both forecast systems to be effective for successful observation, especially when both systems forecasted higher observation probabilities. The developed forecast systems would therefore allow cost‐effective animal observation and may facilitate a better experience for a variety of wildlife observers. - Noise pollution alters the diet composition of invertebrate consumers both in and beyond a noise‐exposed grassland ecosystem

Scientific journal, The massive release of captive-bred native species (“intentional release”) is a pervasive method to enhance wild populations of commercial and recreational species. However, such external inputs may disrupt the sensitive species interactions that allow competing species to coexist, potentially compromising long-term community stability. Here, we use theory and long-term data of stream fish communities to show that intentional release destabilizes community dynamics with limited demographic benefit to the enhanced species. Our theory predicted that intentional release intensifies interspecific competition, facilitating the competitive exclusion of unenhanced species that otherwise stably coexist. In parallel, the excessive input of captive-bred individuals suppressed the natural recruitment of the enhanced species via intensified within-species competition. Consequently, the ecological community with the intentional release is predicted to show reduced community density with unstable temporal dynamics. Consistent with this prediction, stream fish communities showed greater temporal fluctuations and fewer taxonomic richness in rivers with the intensive release of hatchery salmon—a major fishery resource worldwide. Our findings alarm that the current overreliance on intentional release may accelerate global biodiversity loss with undesired consequences for the provisioning of ecosystem services. - Relative importance of tidal flats and artificial habitats for two spoonbill species and related interspecific differences

Japanese, Scientific journal, The Ecological Society of Japan submitted "The opinion for suspension of wind farm construction on the Zenibako Coast" to the Government of Hokkaido and the wind farm owner in 2011, reflecting concerns regarding the academic and ecosystem values of the proposed construction in the area. In addition, an Aftercare Committee (ACC) was established. However, the wind farm was constructed and became operational in February 2020. To evaluate the associated ecosystem impacts, the ACC completed landscape, vegetation and avifauna surveys on and adjacent to the wind farm in the summer of 2020. The surveys yielded four key results: (1) yards occupied 61% of the 5.5-ha footprint and soil erosion was prevalent along road slopes; (2) the greatest ecosystem alteration occurred in the grassland zone, as the wind farm was established nearly parallel to the coastline; (3) exotic plant species, especially Cakile edentula, have established and become widespread on roads and yard areas; and (4) avifaunal populations have declined and the community has become simplified. - Conservation values of abandoned farmland for birds: a functional group approach

本研究は、流水性の水生昆虫の水圏(河川)と陸圏(河畔)間の飛翔移動に着目し、回帰移動方向決定において水生昆虫は河川流水音に依存するとの仮説を検証することを目的とする.本年度は、北海道東部札内川を集中調査地とした過去のデータと現地で採取された昆虫個体生体を用いながら、以下2つの項目を明らかにした.
第一に、河畔域において羽化トラップ(受動的捕獲型のマレーゼトラップおよび粘着型の粘着トラップ)を設置し、異なる季節でのサンプル回収・分析を行うとともに、既存データの整理を通して羽化個体の科レベルでの林内分布パターンを二次元(横断方向および垂直方向)定量化した.これにより、河川地下間隙域に特に依存度の高いカワゲラ目昆虫(イシカリミドリカワゲラ)が最も河川から離れた50m-100mの範囲に分布することが定量的に示された.複数種の水生昆虫成虫の河畔林生息状況を2次元で可視化した世界で初めての事例である.
第二に、音以外の環境条件を一定にした室内防音室において約5mの長さの実験ケージを繰り返し4で作成し、野外で捕獲した水生昆虫成虫(イシカリミドリカワゲラ)の河川音(野外で録音した実河川の流水音)への応答を実験的に検証した.一定明度環境下で3日程度の観測を繰り返した結果、統計的に有意に多数の個体が河川音源側に移動することを確認した.世界で初めて河川音が水生昆虫成虫の動態に影響を与えることを示した結果である.一方で、音源に移動しない個体も見られたことから、音が行動に対して絶対的な影響を与えるわけではない.

近年、申請者らの研究から、交通騒音が生物多様性を左右する種数・個体数に大きく影響することが分かってきた。このことから、生物多様性への騒音の影響を抑止する緩和策の開発が求められている。しかし、生物多様性への騒音緩和策の効果を検証した研究は未だにない。そこで本研究では、野外騒音再生システムを用いて、実現可能または高い効果が期待される緩和策下での騒音低減・周波数変化の様子を再現する。そして、各緩和策の実施が、非実施時の鳥類の種数・個体数をどの程度回復させるのか、回復の程度は群集・各機能群間で異なるのかを明らかにする。これにより、生物多様性保全に最も効果的な緩和策を提案する。
令和3年度は、新型コロナウィルス感染症蔓延防止に注意を払いながら、4~8月は騒音再生システムの最終調整と野外調査地の最終選定を行った。野外調査地には、北海道苫小牧市の森林地帯のうち、互いに十分に離れ、渡り鳥の個体数が多い10か所を選んだ。9~11月に、各調査地で1週間おきに複数の種類の交通騒音を再生し、早朝に鳥類の種数と個体数を毎週数えた。今季の調査では、約50種類が記録された。予備解析の結果、鳥類の種数・個体数は騒音低減によって回復する傾向があることが分かった。機能群ごとの騒音の影響の違いや周波数変化の影響は今後検証する。予算は野外調査で用いる予定だった一部の観測機材の取り寄せが間に合わなかった都合で一部繰り越した。この観測機材を用いた調査は最終年度に実施する。

Anthropogenic noise has now attracted much attention as a driver of global biodiversity loss. However, we know little about the relative ecological impacts of noise and habitat fragmentation, which has long been considered a major driver of global biodiversity loss. Here, using a phantom road experiment, we compared the relative effects of noise and habitat fragmentation on forest bird communities (total abundance and species richness) in 10 1ha forest plots with varied fragmentation indices in Yufutsu plain, northern Japan. Results showed that experimental noise exposure resulted in 50.6% (5.97 birds) and 60.7% (2.90 species) reductions of total bird abundance and species richness, respectively. By contrast, habitat fragmentation resulted in a 46.7% reduction of total bird abundance. These results provide the first experimental evidence that the ecological impacts of noise could be larger than those by habitat fragmentation.

今年度は、前年度に行った成果を、主著・責任著者として論文2編を国際誌に発表出来た。1編は、騒音は注意力散漫・忌避の影響を介してエゾアカガエル雌の音走性(雄の声に向かう行動)を阻害し、この悪影響は騒音へ長期間暴露されても消えないことを室内実験により示した研究で、Functional Ecology誌に掲載された。もう1編は、都市に生息するニホンアマガエルは、路上で騒音に晒されると夜間の移動分散スピードが遅くなることを示した研究で、Global Ecology and Conservation誌に掲載された。さらに、複数分類群を対象とした野外での交通騒音の大規模プレイバック実験により、騒音の直接的な影響は低次動物(バッタ類)よりも高次動物(鳥類)で顕著なこと、騒音は聴覚を持つ分類群(鳥類・バッタ類)に直接影響するだけでなく、種間相互作用を介して聴覚を持たない生物(トンボ類)にまで影響することを示した論文をまとめ、国際誌に投稿した。また、過年度のデータを議論・解析し論文にまとめるにあたり、California Polytechnic State大学を訪問した。
また、夏季には、過年度の結果を発展させる形で、騒音が鳥類の個体数(≒捕食圧)を変える結果として、バッタ類の食性が変わるのかどうかを調べた。具体的には、8~9月に過年度に確立したプレイバックシステムを用いて、騒音の再生前後で鳥類の密度を調べ、同時に多数のバッタ類の糞を採集した。バッタ糞については、現在までDNAメタバーコンディング技術を用いて、採集した糞から食性メニューを調べる手法を確立できた。今後は、詳細な解析を進めるとともに、バッタの食性への騒音の直接的な影響と捕食圧の変化を介した間接的な影響を明確に区別できる実験システムの構築を目指し、さらなる検証を進めていく予定である。

平成28年度は、過年度までに予定していたすべてのデータが得られていたため野外調査の実施規模を大幅に縮小した。過年度までに論文として出版された成果(勇払原野に生息するアンブレラ種であるチュウヒとその他鳥類の繁殖成功度は正に関係する)を受け、4年間にわたって得た多数の湿地パッチのチュウヒの定着とつがいあたりの繁殖成功度(巣立ち雛数)に影響する要因を解析した論文を執筆し、The Journal of Wildlife Management誌に受理された。具体的には、チュウヒのつがいの定着には湿地周囲500mの生息地面積が広いことが重要であるが、巣立ち雛数には湿地周囲2000mの人工構造物が少ないことが重要であることを示した。さらに、アンブレラ種を保全する際にどの程度の経済効果が生まれるのか、またそれは他の保全ターゲット(生態系サービス、湿地面積)による経済効果よりも高いのかを比較した論文を執筆し、現在国際誌で査読中である。また、6~9月には海外研修を行った。研修中では研究に関する意見交換や論文執筆にあたり有意義だった。これらにより、予定していた研究のすべてがアウトプットの段階まで到達したと考えている。さらに、採用期間の最終年度であることから、年間を通して研究成果のアウトリーチ活動を精力的に行った。具体的には、国際学会1件(NAOC)、国内学会3件(日本鳥学会2件、日本生態学会)、商業誌での解説2件(バーダー誌、モーリー)を行った。
