    Japanese, Hawaii is located in the interior of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, making it an ideal location for capturing basin scale climate variability without the influence of continental effects. At the same time, this region also exhibits prominent local seawater mass variability driven by the trade winds. However, long-term in situ observational records of climate in this area are limited. This study aims to reconstruct sea surface temperature (SST) and nutrient variability over the past 100 years, as well as the associated seawater mass dynamics, using coral skeletons. Modern coral skeletons from windward and leeward side of Oahu, were used. Strontium-to-calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios as a SST proxy and nitrogen isotopic composition of skeletal organic matter (d15Ncoral) as a nutrient proxy, that extend back to 1908 on the windward side and 1957 on the leeward side, were obtained. In this presentation, the results of barium-to-calcium (Ba/Ca) and manganese-to-calcium (Mn/Ca) ratios in coral skeletons to investigate the characteristics and origins of local seawater masses, will be discussed.

    English, Scientific journal, Abstract. Sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the south-eastern tropical Indian Ocean is crucial for rainfall variability in Indian Ocean rim countries. A large body of literature has focused on zonal variability associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), but it is unclear whether meridional shifts in the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which at present co-vary with the IOD, may also occur independently. We have developed a new, monthly resolved Sr/Ca record from a sub-fossil coral cored at Enggano Island (Indonesia, 5° S, 102° E). Core sections containing diagenetic phases are omitted from the SST reconstruction. U/Th dating shows that the Sr/Ca-based SST record extends from 1917–1868 and from 1861–1823 with a relative age uncertainty of ±2.4 years (2σ). At Enggano Island, coastal upwelling and cooling in austral spring is coupled to the position of the ITCZ, and impacts SST seasonality. The sub-fossil coral indicates an increase in SST seasonality due to enhanced austral spring cooling between 1917 and 1855, which we attribute to stronger SE winds and a northward shift in the position of the ITCZ in austral spring. A nearby sediment core indicates SST cooling and a shallowing of the thermocline prior to ~1930. These results are consistent with an increase in the North-South SST gradient in the eastern Indian Ocean calculated from historical temperature data, that is not seen in the zonal SST gradient.   • Coral Ba/Ca reflected the past earthquake and tsunami on Kikai Island in 1911

    English, Natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis significantly affect coral reefs and marine ecosystems. The Ryukyu Islands, including Kikai Island and the surrounding coral reefs, face the potential risk of experiencing a significant earthquake with Mw > 8. While historical records offer insights into past tsunami occurrences, there is scarce observation or quantitative data on the impacts of seismic events on the reef ecosystems. Here, we show the environmental impact of the 1911 Kikai Island Earthquake and Tsunami on coral reef ecosystems using coral skeletal geochemical proxies with weekly-to-bi-weekly temporal resolution, particularly focusing on the coral barium/calcium ratios (Ba/Ca). Analysis of a sub-fossil Porites coral specimen collected from Shiomichi Bay, eastern Kikai Island, revealed an anomalous peak in Ba/Ca ratios following the earthquake and tsunami event, indicating increased sediment load in seawater. This anomaly persisted for approximately two months post-earthquake, highlighting the prolonged effect of the tsunami on coral reef environments. Other coral geochemical proxies, such as coral strontium/calcium ratios (Sr/Ca), magnesium/calcium ratios (Mg/Ca), oxygen (δ18Ocoral) and carbon stable isotopes (δ13Ccoral) and oxygen isotopes in seawater (δ18Osw) showed no anomalous change corresponding to the event. Despite the disturbance, the coral growth rate did not show an exceptionally low value, suggesting that the event may not have been catastrophic enough to have a severe impact. Our findings underscore the utility of coral Ba/Ca ratios in assessing historical variations in sediment concentrations associated with seismic events and provide valuable insights into the environmental impacts of tsunamis on coastal ecosystems., 43560288
  • The Northwestern Pacific corals unravel the NPGO/Victoria Mode-related temperature back to the 19th century

    The atmospheric and oceanic phenomena in the Pacific Ocean, such as the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) and the Victoria Mode (VM), have significant implications for global climate change patterns. Although the relationship between surface temperature changes in the Central Pacific warming pool (CPW-ST), NPGO and VM has recently attracted attention, the historical relationships over the centuries remain unknown due to limited instrumental observations. Here, we present a long-term NPGO/VM-related temperature variability based on the Northwestern Pacific coral proxy from 1798 to 2014 AD. The coral skeletal Sr/Ca-inferred temperature record matched the CPW-ST time series, revealing extra-tropical propagation of NPGO/VM-related temperature variation from the central Pacific through an ocean-atmosphere bridge. Furthermore, we identified distinct negative NPGO/low-temperature phases in the late 1840s and during the 1860s-1900s and a positive NPGO/high-temperature phase in the 2000s-2010s. Additionally, a significant correlation between CPW-ST and high-frequency NPGO/VM variability was observed in the past 200 years. Our coral record indicates that the relationship lasted until the 1930s, except from the 1970s to the 1990s, and has strengthened from the 2000s to the present.   • Calibration of Sr/Ca Ratio and In Situ Temperature Using Hawaiian Corals

    The Sr/Ca ratio of modern coral skeletons can record local seawater temperature (T) and is an important tool for reconstructing past environments. However, site‐specific calibrations are required to ensure accurate temperature reconstructions. Here, we examine three modern coral skeletons collected at contrasting sites on the island of Oahu, Hawaii to establish the first accurate calibrations for this region and investigate site specific influences on the calibration process. Satellite T data, which is used for many calibrations, may not be able to derive an accurate thermometer. For our shallow lagoonal sites, satellite T had smaller seasonal T ranges, which resulted in significantly higher slopes of Sr/Ca‐T compared to using in situ T. The traditional age model based on aligning only min/max values can lead to errors in the Sr/Ca‐T calibration due to variable growth rates. An enhanced age model which adds midpoint alignments between the min/max peak values can account for seasonal changes in growth rate and reduce the error. On the same island, site‐ and time period specific conditions can cause notable differences in the Sr/Ca‐T calibrations. The coral from an estuarine embayment showed a high Sr/Ca offset, likely due to high Sr/Ca in ambient seawater. For corals which experienced thermal stress, lower slopes were observed probably due to elevated Sr/Ca values during the period of thermal stress.

    The variability of the northern westerlies has been considered as one of the key elements for modern and past climate evolution. Their multiscale behavior and underlying control mechanisms, however, are incompletely understood, owing to the complex dynamics of Atlantic sea-level pressures. Here, we present a multi-annually resolved record of the westerly drift over the past 6,500 years from northern Italy. In combination with more than 20 other westerly-sensitive records, our results depict the non-stationary westerly-affected regions over mainland Europe on multi-decadal to multi-centennial time scales, showing that the direction of the westerlies has changed with respect to the migrations of the North Atlantic centers of action since the middle Holocene. Our findings suggest the crucial role of the migrations of the North Atlantic dipole in modulating the westerly-affected domain over Europe, possibly modulated by Atlantic Ocean variability.
  • Nonstationary footprints of ENSO in the Mekong River Delta hydrology

    The Mekong River Delta (MRD) is an essential agricultural area for the worldwide rice supply. Floods and droughts triggered by El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) have been threatening sustenance in the MRD. Sustainable food supplies require understanding the response of the MRD hydrology to the changing ENSO behaviour in recent decades. Here, we reconstructed the annual rainfall maxima in the MRD using the oceanic paleoclimate proxy from coral skeletons and compared them with ENSO indexes. Annual minima of coral-based seawater oxygen isotope (δ18Osw) correlated with annual rainfall maxima, which allowed to extend rainfall data from 1924 to the recent. The annual rainfall maxima based on δ18Osw negatively correlated with the central Pacific El Niño index. This suggested that La Niña and central Pacific El Niño events lead to heavy and light rainy seasons. The heavy rainy season had more serious impacts in recent decades, which likely increases the flood risk. In contrast, the frequency and rainfall amount of the light rainy season has not changed significantly, although a catastrophic drought has hit the MRD. Our finding concludes that the impact of the ENSO event on MRD hydrology is inconsistent in the past century.

    Extreme positive Indian Ocean Dipole (pIOD) events are amplified by non-linear ocean–atmosphere interactions and are characterized by pronounced cooling in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean. These non-linear feedbacks are not adequately represented in historical products of sea surface temperatures that underestimate the magnitude of extreme pIOD events. Here, we present a sea surface temperature (SST) reconstruction based on monthly coral Sr/Ca ratios measured in two coral cores from Enggano Island (Indonesia), that lies in the eastern pole of the IOD. The coral SST reconstruction extends from 1930 to 2008 and captures the magnitude of cooling during extreme pIOD events as shown in recent satellite and reanalysis data of SST that include ocean dynamics. The corals indicate that the 1961 pIOD event was at least as severe as the 1997 event, while the 1963 pIOD was more comparable to the 2006 event. The magnitude 1967 pIOD is difficult to assess at present due to poor replication between coral cores, and may be comparable to either 1997 or 2006. Cooling during the 1972 pIOD was short-lived and followed by pronounced warming, as seen in the moderate pIOD event of 1982. A combination of coral SST reconstructions and an extension of new reanalysis products of SST to historical time scales could help to better assess the severity and impact of past pIOD events such as the ones seen in the 1960s.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, Corals are surviving and adapting to drastic change in Earth’s history and create nanometer to planetary scale complex structures throughout geological time. Once coral larvae settle on the rocky substrate, coral biomineralization occurs to produce their skeletons and coral growth and accumulation of their skeletons with other organisms and sediments eventually form coral reefs where maintain the highest diversity in marine ecosystem. Coral-algal symbiosis is sensitive to global and regional scale environmental changes and coral skeletons are useful to reconstruct the century scale climatic and environmental changes with high temporal resolution such as global warming, ocean acidification, and ocean pollution. Coral calcification plays important role to long to short term carbon cycles via their cellular level of organic and inorganic carbon production in coral-algal symbiosis. Therefore, understanding coral biomineralization is crucial to figure out the better evaluation of global climate changes and carbon cycle in the past and future.

    [INTRODUCTION] The Holocene is characterized by shifting climate regime from Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM) (7.0 kyr – 5.0 kyr), post-HTM cool period (4.6 kyr-4.0 kyr) to Late Holocene gradual warming period. Accurate timing and influence of climate regime shift to East Asian Monsoon (EAM) during Holocene in Northwestern Pacific have yet to be fully understood. [MATERIALS AND METHODS] We reconstructed sea surface temperature (SST) using coupled Sr/Ca and δ18O records of two fossil corals with 14C age dates of 5.7 kyr and 3.2 kyr BP, collected from uplifted reef terraces in Kikai Island, Japan. With biweekly to monthly resolution, powder samples were collected along the maximum vertical growth axis from well-preserved coral skeleton. 80-100 µg powder samples were analyzed to measure Sr/Ca ratio using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) and 20-40 µg powder samples were analyzed to measure δ18O ratio using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (MAT 253) coupled with Kiel IV carbonate device.[RESULTS AND DISCUSSION] Fossil corals recorded cooler mean SST during 5.7 kyr BP (24.5 °C) and 3.2 kyr BP (24.1 °C) compared to the modern coral SST record (25.4 °C). Average maximum (summer) and minimum (winter) SSTs during 5.7 kyr BP were 28.0°C and 18.6°C, respectively. Average maximum and minimum SSTs during 3.2 kyr BP were 27.7°C and 19.9°C, respectively. Enhanced winter-summer seasonality during 5.7 kyr (9.5°C) while reduced seasonality during 3.2 kyr (7.8°C) were detected from the Sr/Ca time series relative to average seasonality measured from modern coral record (8.1°C). The 5.7 kyr BP coral record shows average summer SST almost similar with previously reconstructed SST from Kikai Island during Holocene Thermal Maximum (Morimoto et.al. 2007 (7.0 kyr and 6.1 kyr); Kajita et.al. 2017 (4.9 kyr)). However, winter during 5.7 kyr was colder by ~2.0°C relative to other HTM records from Kikai Island. This suggests a cooler environment during 5.7 kyr that occurred in the middle of HTM in Northwestern Pacific. The 3.2 kyr BP coral record has higher SST values compared to the reported SSTs from 3.4 to 4.2 kyr in Kikai Island (Abram et.al. 2001). This shows the end-timing of cooling event in Northwestern Pacific around 3.2 kyr BP then shifted to gradual warming period in Late Holocene. The reconstructed SST during 5.7 kyr recorded the largest seasonality within the HTM compared to the previously published data from Kikai Island. This revealed a stronger EAM despite relatively cooler SST to other HTM SST records in Kikai Island. The 3.2 kyr recorded a reduced seasonality driven by weaker EAM. Coral δ18O records from 3.4 to 4.2 kyr in Kikai Island also show weaker EAM. In this presentation, we also present the coral δ18O records during 5.7 kyr and 3.2 kyr BP to discuss the mechanism of EAM influence to the hydroclimatology in Kikai Island during Mid-Holocene.

    Japanese, 本研究では、最終的に日本海における深層水の形成メカニズムや循環を詳細に明らかにすべく、そのトレーサーとして利用する人工放射性核種U-236の日本海表層へ供給変遷史を明らかにすることを目的とし、対馬海峡にある壱岐島で採取したサンゴコア試料の各年輪中U同位体分析を行った。結果、サンゴ試料から1935-2010年の間のU-236/U-238比を復元することができた。復元されたU-236/U-238比は、1955年、1959年、1963年の3つのピークを示した。大気圏内核実験による核出力が最大であった1963年にはピークは見られたものの最大値を示さなかった。U-236/U-238比の最大は、赤道太平洋核実験場で最も多く核実験が行われた1958年の一年後である1959年であった。このことから日本海へのU-236供給は、グローバルフォールアウトによる1960年代の導入以前に、北赤道核実験場で行われた水爆実験の影響を受けた海水が既に流入しており、その影響は相対的に大きいことが分かった。
  • Reconstruction of hydrothermal events using reef building corals in Satsuma Iwo-jima

    Japanese, Coral cores from massive corals could record marine environmental and ecological changes in their annual bands with monthly temporal resolution in the present and/or the past. We discovered large massive Porites corals living at active volcanic island of Satsuma Io-Jima, located 50 km south from Kyushu area, southern part of Japan. Satsuma Io-Jima provides a unique opportunity to observe marine organism living under extreme environments of volcanic gases emission and different types of hydrothermal activities from sea flower. We collected eleven coral cores from four different conditions around the island to test if corals could record volcanic and hydrothermal activities and how corals could survive in extreme environments such as very low pH condition with CO2 emission. Coral extension rate for the site near hydrothermal vent was significantly small (1-2mm/year) relative to that for general condition of Porites corals (ca. 10-20 mm/year), suggesting that coral growth was influenced by hydrothermal activity. We will demonstrate our preliminary results of geochemical approaches of δ18O, δ13C, Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca, Ba/Ca, and F/Ca in coral skeletons and in surrounding seawater and discuss the possibility for reconstructing the past hydrothermal events and relationship between marine ecosystem and extreme environments at volcanic activity as the analogues for coral adaptation to future ocean acidification.

    English, Scientific journal, The skeletal texture and crystal morphology of the massive reef-building coral Porites lobata were observed from the nano- to micrometer scale using an analytical transmission electron microscope (ATEM). The skeletal texture consists of centers of calcification (COCs) and fiber area. Fiber areas contain bundles of needle-like aragonite crystals that are elongated along the crystallographic c-axis and are several hundred nanometers to one micrometer in width and several micrometers in length. The size distribution of aragonite crystals is relatively homogeneous in the fibers. Growth lines are observed sub-perpendicular to the direction of aragonite growth. These growth lines occur in 1-2 μm intervals and reflect a periodic contrast in the thickness of an ion-spattered sample and pass through the interior of some aragonite crystals. These observations suggest that the medium filled in the calcification space maintains a CaCO₃-supersaturated state during fiber growth and that a physical change occurs periodically during the aragonite crystals of the fiber area.

  • Estimation of uncertainty for massive Porites coral skeletal density

    English, Scientific journal, Previous studies have not demonstrated the estimate errors in growth parameters (skeletal density, extension rate and calcification rate) for massive coral skeletons. In order to discuss the variability of coral skeletal growth, it is crucial for quantitative evaluation of the parameters with errors. We report the protocol of calculating errors as combined standard uncertainty for coral skeletal density (uρSA) based on ISO/IEC Guide 98–3 (2008). We applied the non-destructive transparent X-ray 2-D imaging scanner, TATSCAN-X1, which enabled to quick and quantitative analysis of the uρSA parameters with digital procedures. We analyzed the annual skeletal density for massive Porites coral collected from Ishigaki Island. The skeletal densities changed from 1.45 to 1.70 g/cm3 and uρSA were ca. 0.02 g/cm3. Our results indicated that the uρSA was derived from the combined effects of 78.5% from the standard uncertainty of deducing of analytical curve (u ln OD (Y)→ρ*t (X)) and 6.3% from that of the sample thickness error (utSA).

    今後のサンゴの石灰化量変遷を予測するための有用な手段として、サンゴの石灰化応答モデル(以下、応答モデル)構築が挙げられる。そのためには、長期間の古環境(地球化学的知見)と骨格成長(生態学的知見)情報を有するサンゴ骨格分析が有用である。しかしながら、これまで、とりわけ石灰化量変遷に関する地球化学的および生態学的知見を融合した研究は殆ど行われてこなかった。本発表では、温帯サンゴについて両知見を融合させた研究発表を行う。具体的には、温帯サンゴの石灰化変遷量を状態空間モデルで解析し、応答モデル構築に関しての議論を展開する。

    Japanese, Scientific journal, Coral reefs are increasingly faced to the crisis of decline and death caused by climate changes and anthropogenic influence. These crises were reported in Shiraho coral reefs, the Ishigaki Island, Southwestern Japan, caused by the red soils runoff through the Todoroki River. In order to evaluate the influence of terrestrial inputs on coral skeletal growth and coral death, we have analyzed oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios, as well as Mn/Ca ratio, of coral Porites, skeleton collected from Shiraho reef. The coral colony used in this study was still alive but partly dead when the samples were recovered in 20th September 2006. Oxygen isotopic profile of necrosis part indicates that the death may have occurred in winter 2005 when a strongly positive peak of Mn/Ca ratio was observed in the same growth layer of living part, suggesting that increased terrestrial input during sugar cane harvest and closed water system during lower tide level in winter are a possible cause of coral necrosis in the Shiraho coral reefs.

    硬骨海綿とは塊状の炭酸塩骨格をもつ海綿動物の総称であり、その多くは海底洞窟やサンゴ礁付近のクレバスなどの暗がりに生息している。硬骨海綿は生息深度が幅広い(5~600m)・成長速度が遅い(0.2~1.5mm/year)・長寿命である(700年以上)という固有の特徴を有することから、新たな古環境記録媒体としての有用性が検討されている。演者は本研究に先駆け、硬骨海綿の1種である(Acanthochaetetes wellsi)のHigh-Mg calcite骨格を沖縄県久米島で採取し、骨格内の多元素濃度測定を行なった。その結果、硬骨海綿骨格内には他の生物源炭酸塩骨格と比較して鉛元素が非常に高濃度(2~11ppm)で濃集されていることが明らかとなり、さらに特徴的なピークが確認出来た。このような生物源炭酸塩骨格内の鉛元素は、主に鉛鉱山の採掘や有鉛ガソリン等による人為起源の鉛が起源であると考えられている(Desenfant et al.,2006ほか)。これを踏まえ、本研究ではさらに硬骨海綿骨格内の鉛同位体比測定を行ない、生息域周辺の鉛放出源の特定及び時系列での放出源の推移を推定した。

    Japanese, 世界で最も高緯度に位置する、日本の壱岐サンゴ礁より採取されたキクメイシ属サンゴ骨中の酸素・炭素同位体比を分析し、中緯度域における高時間分解能古気候アーカイブとしての可能性を検討した。まず試料は莢壁と軸柱の骨格構造別に分析し、その結果を生育時の環境記録と対比・検討を行った。この結果、軸柱と莢壁は形成のタイミングが異なっており、キクメイシ属サンゴの場合、莢壁の方がより正確に環境を記録することがわかった。また本研究で用いたサンゴ骨格は、骨格構造自体にも成長パターンの季節的変化が見られた。これらの成果を基に、さらに長期に渡る骨格分析を行い、これらを周辺の環境と対比・検討したのでその成果を報告する。

    造礁性サンゴ骨格を用いた古環境復元においては、これまで塊状の群体を形成するハマサンゴ属が主に用いられてきた。キクメイシ属の塊状群体は、ハマサンゴ属のそれよりもさらに高緯度の地域でみられることから、ハマサンゴ属よりも低水温に適応していると考えられている。したがってキクメイシ属の骨格は、従来造礁性サンゴ骨格があまりターゲットにしてこなかった温帯地域での古環境指標として広く利用できる可能性を秘めている。鹿児島県甑島は温帯性の気候帯に属し、ハマサンゴ属とキクメイシ属がどちらも生息している。本研究では、甑島産のハマサンゴとキクメイシの軟X線画像による密度バンドと骨格中の酸素安定同位体比を用いて、両種のサンゴの温帯地域における骨格成長の季節性と、古水温指標としての可能性を比較・検討した。

    サンゴ骨格の昼夜での骨格形成パターンに関する知見は,光量がサンゴ骨格の形成に与える影響など,サンゴの石灰化メカニズムを議論するために重要である.本研究では,サンゴ骨格に自然に取り込まれカルシウムと化学的な挙動が似ているストロンチウム(Sr)を用いて,サンゴ骨格(Porites sp.)に高時間解像度で標識が可能かどうか,昼夜で骨格形成パターンに違いが見られるかを検証した.その結果,他の種で報告されているような昼夜での骨格形成パターンの違いは見られず,Poritesは昼夜で骨格成長部位を変えることなく,連続して成長していることが示唆された.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, Various information on the geochemical characteristics of seawater is recorded in reef-building coral skeletons, which have been widely utilized for the high temporal resolution (one or two weeks) analysis of paleoenvironment in the tropical ocean. The stable oxygen/carbon isotopic ratios and trace element contents in coral skeletons are generally applied to the paleoenvironmental reconstruction. The paleoenvironmental analysis based on organic matter in coral skeletons, however, has rarely been performed. Organic analysis of coral skeletons has been conducted mainly for the understanding of coral biomineralization. Coral organic matter, which is much less reactive than sedimentary organic matter, can be a useful paleoenvironmental proxy. Combination of organic and inorganic geochemical analyses for coral skeletons will be a powerful tool to provide more information on the paleoenvironment.

    硬骨海綿とは塊状の炭酸塩骨格をもつ海綿動物の総称である。近年、大西洋やカリブ海に生息する硬骨海綿の骨格内に保存された各種化学成分が、サンゴやシャコガイなどと同様に過去の環境を保存している可能性が示唆された。一方で硬骨海綿はこれらの炭酸塩骨格生物とは異なり、生息深度が幅広い(5~600m)・成長速度が遅い(0.2~1.5mm/year)・長寿命である(700年以上)という固有の特徴を有することから、数10年周期の気候変動を記録した古環境記録媒体としての有用性が検討されている。本研究では太平洋~インド洋に広く分布する硬骨海綿2種(Acanthochaetetes wellsi:High-Mg calcite骨格, Astrosclera willeyana:Aragonite骨格)を同地点・同水深で採取し、その骨格内の多元素濃度測定を行なう事で、両種の古環境媒体としての有用性及び成長速度の推定を検討する。

    本研究では, 非破壊かつ迅速で簡便にサンゴ骨格成長量と俯瞰的な化学組成変動(数ヶ月程度の解像度での季節変動)を捉える分析手法を開発することが目的である。具体的には, 軟X線写真,非破壊蛍光X線地殻コアロガー・微少領域対応型(TATSCAN-F1)とコア対応型(TATSCAN-F2)を用いて, サンゴ骨格成長量と俯瞰的な化学組成変動を時系列に沿って分析する。本研究手法の確立により, 最大150cm長のサンゴコア(推定年齢150年程度)のサンゴ骨格成長量と俯瞰的な化学組成変動を, サンゴコアを数枚に切断することなく, 非破壊で数日以内に分析できる。本講演では, 我々がこれまで鋭意進めてきたそれらの手法の可能性と開発成果を報告する。

    サンゴ骨格の窒素同位体比を用いて過去の海洋表層の栄養塩濃度とその起源を復元し、新たな古環境指標としての可能性を検討するため、外洋の沖ノ鳥島と石垣島轟川河口からサンゴ骨格試料を採取し、その成長方向に沿って窒素同位体比・総窒素量を1ヶ月の分解能で測定した。また比較のため、それぞれの窒素同位体比の測線に平行して沖ノ鳥島サンゴではBa/Ca比、Mn/Ca比を、石垣島サンゴではMn/Ca比を測定した。その結果、窒素同位体比・総窒素量の平均値は共に石垣島の方が高く、沿岸の方がサンゴの窒素同化が盛んであることを示した。さらに石垣島サンゴでは、河川からの流入物質の影響が窒素同位体比、総窒素量とMn/Ca比に反映し、沖ノ鳥島サンゴでは、海洋の鉛直混合や湧昇に伴う深層からの栄養塩の供給と海洋表層の窒素固定が窒素同位体比の変動要因として考えられる結果となった。今後、サンゴ骨格の窒素同位体比は海洋の栄養塩の挙動を復元する指標となることが期待できる。

    English, The tropical oceans drive climatic phenomena such as the El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO) and the Asian–Australian monsoon, which have global scale impacts. In order to understand future climatic developments, it is essential to understand how the tropical climate has developed in the past, on both short and longer timescales. However, good instrumental records are limited to the last few decades. The oxygen isotopic (δ18O) composition and strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) ratio of massive corals have been widely used as proxies for past changes in sea surface temperature (SST) of the tropical and subtropical oceans, because the geochemistry of the skeleton is believed to vary as a function of several environmental parameters (such as seawater temperature, salinity, light, …). However, recent microanalytical studies have revealed large amplitude variations in Sr/Ca and oxygen isotopic composition in coral skeletons; variations that cannot be ascribed to changes in SST or in salinity. Such micro- and nanometer scale studies of geochemical variations in coral skeletons are still few and somewhat scattered in terms of the species studied and the problems addressed. But collectively they show the great potential for determining chemical variations at length scales of direct relevance to the biomineralization process. For example, it is now possible to measure geochemical variations within the two basic, micrometer-sized building blocks of the coral skeleton: Early mineralization zones (EMZ) and aragonite fibres. Such micro- and nanometer scale observations, in combination with controlled laboratory culturing of corals, hold the promise of yielding important new insights into the various biomineralization processes that may affect the chemical and isotopic composition of the skeletons. One aim of these efforts is to better understand the elemental and isotopic fractionation mechanisms in order to improve the conversion of the geochemical variability into environmental changes.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, My recent scientific interests have been to reconstruct palaeoclimates in the tropical and sub tropical areas using chemical tracer of biogenic carbonates including coral skeletons and molluscan shells, which have annual and daily growth bands. Understanding the past climate variability in the tropical ocean is a high priority in climate change research. The tropical climate variability has global consequences such as El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Asian-Australian monsoon but the instrumental records in this area are limited only up to past several decades. Recently coral skeletons have been widely used to understand the past climate variability in the tropical ocean. The oxygen isotopic and trace elemental records of living and fossil coral skeletons have provided the sea surface temperature and precipitation over several hundred years. Despite such a great advance, there still remain problems to use coral skeletons for reconstructing palaeoclimates because of complicated biological and physical processes during their formation. Here I would like to introduce recent my works concerned with these problems and solutions using biogenic carbonates in the skeletons of coral reefs dwellers.

    English, Scientific journal, Massive corals have been widely used as proxies for past changes in sea surface temperature (SST) of the tropical and subtropical oceans because the oxygen isotopic (δ18O) and strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios of their aragonitic skeletons are believed to vary quantitatively as a function of the temperature of the ambient sea water. However, recent microanalytical studies using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have revealed large chemical heterogeneities for Sr/Ca and oxygen isotopic ratios in coral skeleton, which cannot be explained by temperature variation. The newly developed NanoSIMS has a potential to determine chemical variations within the two basic building blocks of the coral skeleton; centres of calcification and fibers. Such data can provide important new information about the biomineralization process and help constrain the degree to which temperature and/or biological processes affect the composition of skeleton in corals, as well as in biogenetic carbonates formed by other marine organisms.

    Japanese, Scientific journal, A modern Tridacna (Hippopus hippopus) was collected on September 5,1993 from a coral reef at Ishigaki Island in Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan, in order to investigate the environmental changes recorded in the shell. We adopted freezing microtome technique for high resolution analysis of the oxygen isotope of the shell. A portion of the innner layer, where daily growth lines are observed under a microscope, was cut out vertically from the inner surface. A stick measuring 20x1x2mm was then placed in water and frozen.     昨年度にフレンチポリネシアで採取したサンゴ化石の年代測定および一次解析を開始した。採取した43試料のうち、保存がよく、人類移動の時期における海水準を考慮して、分析を優先するサンプルを選定した。選定した試料はX線回折装置により微小量の方解石化の進行の有無と、走査型電子顕微鏡および薄片試料によるアラレ石の二次沈着結晶の有無を確認し、初生的なアラレ石が保存されている試料をさらに選別した。保存のよいサンゴ化石試料は放射性炭素年代測定により年代を決定し、その結果、本研究課題がターゲットとしている年代の試料を得ることができた。地球化学分析用に選定した試料を板状に成形し、軟X線画像を撮影し、密度バンド(年輪)を観察した。マイクロスケールで制御できるステージを付属したミリングマシンを利用して、年輪の成長方向に沿って骨格を切削し、粉末試料を採取した。採取した粉末試料の酸素同位体比およびストロンチウム/カルシウム比の分析を行った。一部の化石試料からはエルニーニョの影響によるシグナルが検出され、本研究で用いる試料が有用な古気候記録を保持していることを確認することができた。今後はさらに年代の幅を広げて、高解像度の古気候シグナルの検出を実施する。また、本年度はニアオセアニアの代表としてサモアでフィールド調査を実施し、離水したサンゴ礁に分布する大型のハマサンゴ化石の探索を行った。また今後の調査に必要な関係機関との協力体制の構築を実施することができた。

    人為起源の地球温暖化と沿岸域の富栄養化に伴う将来の海洋貧酸素化の拡大の可能性が指摘されているが、産業革命以降の気候・海洋環境変化に伴う貧酸素水塊の形成と拡大の直接的な証拠や、将来予測に不可欠な長期データが現存しない。本研究では、世界最大の貧酸素水塊の縁辺部に位置するハワイ諸島と、既に貧酸素環境にあるアラビア海という条件の異なる海域を対象とし、浅海および深海サンゴ骨格試料に対し、新たに開発する化学指標を用いることにより、海洋の 貧酸素化の拡大の変遷を復元する。本研究で復元される溶存酸素濃度の長期一次データと気候 ・海洋・生態系統合モデルを組み合わせることにより将来予測を試みる。 本年度も、昨年と同様に予定していたハワイとオマーンのフィールドワークが世界的な新型感染症の拡大により計画通り実施することができなかった。一方で、共同研究者の来日や既存の浅海サンゴのボーリングコア試料の整理と使用許可の調整や、観測モニタリング、既存のサンゴのボーリングコア試料の酸素・炭素安定同位体比ならびにMn/Ca比、Sr/Ca比の測定といった地球化学的解析を進めるなど、研究分担者がそれぞれの現地で実践できる活動を順調に進めることができた。 次年度も世界的な情勢によりフィールドワークの計画は慎重を要するが、現地の共同研究者との連携を強化し、予定していた試料の入手に取り組みつつ、既存の浅海サンゴのボーリングコア試料の再解析など現地で新たな試料を得られない場合も含めた対応の両面で検討する。

    本研究は昼と夜に貝殻を開閉し太陽日輪を刻むシャコガイ殻化石を用いて、過去1000万年間の地球の自転速度を復元することを目的とする。1)シャコガイ 殻の太陽暦(日・年)キャリブレーション、2)化石シャコガイ試料の採取と年代測定、3)現生および化石の成長線解析と炭酸凝集同位体分析を行い、シャコガイ殻に記録される公転周期の中に、日輪が何本刻まれているかを計測し、過去の自転速度を復元する。本研究は世界初の地球自転計を目指すものであり、その成果は化学分析の必要ない新しい年代決定法の開発や古代天文暦の謎を解明するなど多分野への強い波及効果が期待される。地球の自転速度は地質時代を通じて海水やマントルと地殻の密度の差による摩擦力により減速しているとされているが、有史以前は自転速度を見積もることのできる観察記録が存在しない。また、過去の自転速度を直接的に復元する方法はなかった。現在の地球の条件では自転周期と原子時計にズレが生じ、約500日に1秒の閏秒が挿入される。自転速度の変化は、”海洋にかかる遠心力を変化させ地球の海水準を変動させる”、”地殻の扁平率を減少させ地球表面の日射量を増大させる”、”プレート運動の歪みを増大させ地震を発生させる”など、地球の気候変動や地殻変動への影響が示唆されているが、地球史を通じた過去の自 転速度の直接データは存在せず地球環境変動との相互関係はこれまで議論されていない。本年度は飼育実験のためのシャコガイの採取ならびに、完新世および更新世のシャコガイ化石試料を追加で採取を行い、今後年代測定を行う予定である。また、シャコガイの炭素凝集同位体比測定のために、現生及び完新世のシャコガイ化石試料の酸素同位体比測定を行い、酸素同位体比水温計の作成を行なっている。

  • Twilight zone- a key for coral reef recovery: vertical connectivity and depth adaptation of corals

    Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems are considered as refuges for shallow corals from bleaching and expected to act as a larval source for recovery for shallow reefs. In this study, we examined larval recruitment and adaptation from deep to shallow, genetic structures between depths, and deep environments to reveal shallow reef recovery potential from the mesophotic coral, Seriatopora hystrix. We found that reproductive seasons are shorter with increasing depth, suggesting less opportunity for larval recruitment. The species did not recruit nor survive in shallow water conditions. On the other hand, they recruit mid-water, deep depths or shaded condition in shallow, and partially grew. High genetic diversity was observed in this species for all depths with no clear partitioning of haplotypes among depths/locations. Overall, we suggest that mesophotic larvae of this species may not recruit directly to shallow water, but recruit and recover slowly via mid-water depth as stepping stone.

    In this research with international framework, we could conduct the coral drilling in Hawaii islands, to reconstruct the past histories for 100 years with seasonal to decadal scale. The obtained coral data were shared and compared among international coral reef laboratory (IL-CREES), coral core center, and Kikai institute for coral reef sciences to understand the global scale climate changes and contribute coral core data base for sharing the coral records in Pacific and Indian Ocean in the world. This international researches also could contribute to enhance to accelerate international frameworks for understanding global scale climate change and it’s influence on marine ecosystem and social responses with next generation of scientists. and young people, including Vietnam, Germany, Indonesia, USA, Taiwan, France, East Timor, and Japan.

  • Coral skeletal records reveal the impact of short-term climatic cycles on the transition from Neanderthals to Homo Sapiens

    We analyzed trace elements and oxygen isotopes in fossil corals (Plesiastrea versipora and Porites sp.) from the time interval during MIS3 in Kikai Island. We found clear cyclic changes in interannual to decadal scales. Within the 22-year temperature records in Porites corals 55,000 years ago, the range of seasonal temperature variation dropped by half for 4 years. The cold (warm) water in summer (winter) could mainly reflect air temperature because we could not find same variation in oxygen isotopes of Tridacna shells. This drastic changes in air temperature could impact on the human life styles such as their food and habitability environment.

    Marine biogenic calcium carbonate, such as coral skeleton, bivalve shell and fish otolith, may record past environmental and ecological information as their chemical and isotopic compositions. We have accomplished ultra-high resolution past marine environmental reconstruction by the analysis of biogenic calcium carbonate using a NanoSIMS. Moreover we have established a method of stable isotope labeling in the biogenic calcium carbonate.

  • High resolution climate records in modern and fossil corals in past warm periods: Analog for future global warming

    We reconstructed environmental and calcification changes during past different warming periods using modern and fossil skeletons of reef builders in order to estimate the responses of coral reefs and biodiversity in future global warming. In our results, calcification rates of major reef builders were varied among each warming periods. The responses in their calcification rates were not only explained by temperature, but also influenced by the interaction with environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, nutrients, acidification, and sea level changes. Each factors were also complex influenced by their seasonal variability, climatic-ecological events, the surviving strategy of each reef builders.

    We have reconstructed the change in Kuroshio transport during last 100 years using the coral skeletons from four different areas in north Pacific of Kuroshio regions (Luetao island, Taiwan, Koshiki island, Kagoshima, Tatsukushi, Kouchi, Kushimoto, Wakayama). We applied the oxygen isotopes, strontium/calcium ratio, nitrogen isotopes on coral skeletons to estimate the past changes of salinity, temperature, and nutrient with weekly to monthly temporal resolution and discussed the relationship during last 100 among the Kuroshio behavior, global warming, and regional climate systems, including ENSO and PDO.

    In this research we attempted to establish new nutrient proxy in oligotrophic oceans using stable nitrogen isotopes in organic materials of reef-building coral skeletons, which grow up to several hundreds years with annual bands.
    Since the conventional approaches to use the adult skeleton have made the separation of the skeletal part where formed during experimental periods, we applied the primary coral polyp cultured in different nutrient conditions in this research.
    During the observation in experimental period, we observed distinct difference of calcification rate, skeletal structure among cultured samples in different conditions and between symbiotic and asymbiotic coral larvae.

  • Morphological variability through speciation : A case of a marine planktonic diatom genus Neodenticula

    Temporal variability in valvar morphology of a marine planktonic diatom genus Neodenticula was investigated using the Earliest Quaternary sediment cores from the subarctic North Pacific Ocean. Species composition and each species' morphology of the genus changed during the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation, around 2.6 million years ago (Ma).
    Drastic morphological change, specifically, a dominance of a "peculiar" type, was recorded just before the extant species appeared in 2.55 Ma based on a biometric measurement of valves. On the other hand, the culture experimental results of the species indicated that the peculiar type appeared when the higher growth rates and lower availability of the major nutrients were brought(Shimada et al., 2009). Thus, we suggest that the moprhological event of the diatom genus in the subarctic Northwestern Pacific Ocean around 2.6 Ma may have reflect a short-term collapse of the nutrient regime in the ocean.

    We identified as following three topics. 1) Iron sedimentation period and timing, 2) Caldera forming process and sedimentation, 3) Hydrothermal process and Coral record. We identified 3 years long temperature records of ocean surface, floor and sediments with hydrothermal activity in Nagahama bay. Sediment core and coral core samples indicate sedimentation timing of Iron and record of volcanic activity.

    The skeleton of Flabellum(F.) magnificum provides a record of environmental variables at various time scales. The different time scales are preserved by different elements of the skeletal structure of this species. In particular, temporal changes in Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, and Mn/Ca ratios during corallite growth reflect environmental fluctuations(e. g., nutrient availability, hydrothermal activity) at the ocean surface and in deep-sea areas. In addition, circadian rhythmicity was detected in polyp activity, and circadian clock genes were identified. In the future, it will be possible to reconstruct temporal fluctuations in the ocean environment over a period of 50 years, based on analyses of the composition of the skeleton of F. magnificum.

  • スマトラ沖造礁性サンゴ骨格を用いた過去数百年間の地震及び津波履歴の高精度復元

    熱帯域から亜熱帯域に広く棲息する造礁性サンゴは、年輪を刻みながら炭酸塩骨格を成長させ(サンゴ年輪)、サンゴの生息期間(数百年間)に起こった様々な環境変化や事変を記録している。造礁性サンゴの成長方向(時間軸)に沿った化学分析によって週から月単位の高時間解像度で過去の生息環境の変化を復元することができる。インドネシア・スマトラ島沖の造礁性サンゴ年輪を用いて過去の地震および津波の記録を復元するという目的で研究調査を行った。スマトラ沖メンタワイ諸島の南パガイ島およびアチェ州シメル島において大型の塊状ハマサンゴの水中及び陸上掘削によるサンゴコア試料を用いた。サンゴコア試料は平板上に切断し、軟X線写真を撮影したところ、明瞭な密度バンド(年輪)が観察でき、長いコアでは現在から1750年代にまで遡ることが可能であるとわかった。また、サンゴ骨格中の微量元素濃度、酸素・炭素・窒素安定同位体比を測定した。その結果、津波による海底堆積物の撹拌や陸起源物質の流入により、骨格中の微量元素濃度が変化することが示唆された。また、炭素同位体比は、サンゴの触手に共生する褐虫藻の光合成量によって変化すると考えられており、地震前後の沈降/隆起によるサンゴ生態部の水深の変化(光量の変化)を読み取ることができる定量的な指標として有用であることが示された)。本調査により採取したサンゴ年輪の時間軸に沿った骨格構造や化学組成...

    This research project aims to clarify the origin of high marine biodiversity of the tropical Southeast Asian islands based on multidisciplinary studies of fossil and modern invertebrates from Philippines and Indonesia. The results include the discovery of previously unknown Cenozoic fossil assemblages, new age controls for the fossil assemblages based on microfossil analyses, segregation of marine biota between the east and west of Indonesian Seaway in Neogene times, the presence of a permanent El Nino event, etc.

    2003 年から2006 年に渡ってフィリピンルソン島における地質調査により、相次いで非常に保存の良い中期鮮新世の化石サンゴ(3.5-3.8M)の大型群体を発見した。シンクロトロンXRD分析、電子顕微鏡観察から続成作用の受けていない2 つの大型サンゴ群体試料を選定し、それらの年輪に沿った高解像度の酸素同位体比解析から中期鮮新世温暖期におけるエルニーニョ現象の変動の復元することに成功した。

    高等植物バイオマーカーの安定水素同位体比と菌類バイオマーカーの存在度に注目して地質時代における陸域の水循環を評価する方法を提案した. 新生代始新世・漸新世の一連の堆積岩に適用した結果,同時期の中緯度陸域は著しく多雨湿潤であり,顕著な基礎生産と炭素固定が行われていたと考えられる. 新生代始新世から現在までの長期的な地球気温の低下は草本質植物の進化拡大や大陸基礎生産による生物フォーシングが重要な役割を果たしたと考えられる.
